Well I guess disney could issue another license, is that going to happen. I don't think so as it would need to be something already not covered.

I think were stuck with swtor, until disney decidees to shut the license down, or when the license runs out.  Does anybody know how long the license for swtor is anyways?

If I were to venture a guess, there are performance stipulations on the IP agreement. It wouldn't be a case of 'you pay us $x-amount and do whatever you want'.

Walt Lucas/BioWare/EA all know where the buck stops.

Yep, in Mickey's pocket.

One word... Amatures.

I love the Darkfall Online concept, but do not feel that Aventurine can deliver and here is why...

I've been following Tacos and Aventurine for about a decade now.  Tacos reminds me a lot of what we know about Bill Gates except one thing... Bill Gates knew when to back off and in bring in the professionals that were going to take Microsoft to the next level.  Tacos on the other hand has to be the show and dictator on all things Darkfall.  Things have stooped so low at Aventurine, Tacos has even started blaming interns for things going wrong.

I really do wish the best for the players.  They've waited a long time for Aventurine to get their act together with this project.

You don't know what you are talking about.  Lets take a look at the "professionals":

  • Look at FunCom games and how they are developed   and launched (AoC, AO).  These guys unlike Av literally faked in game footage and released it.  The introduced more content before the got the basic mechanics working.  These were AAA titles with hundreds of developers working on them.
  • Look at VG and its development debacle. Again, this game would release features before basic game mechanics were functional.  I won't even go into the  fact they they refused to ban hackers until most of the population left.
  • As for Microsoft.  I work with Microsoft as a partner and they are  nothing close to proofessional.  I can list a litany of amature action they engage in.  Failure to define products, they won't give you project dealines at all, they will convince partners to put money on the line for a general date of release then postpone for a year.
Let us not even talk about the non AAA guys like MO.
The reality  is that very few games succeed in the MMO sphere.  Av's practices are  somewhere in the middle and they are hugely understaffed.  While they occasional say some stupid stuff, they have done an amazing job witht he resources at hand.

If they are so unprofessional, why are you a Microsoft partner?  The OP asked us to summarize how we feel about Aventurine and I did.  Nothing more, nothing less.  I agree with you on Funcom.  As far as Sigil goes, that was a prime example of why Nepatism in a game studio is a very bad thing... I could be wrong, but an industry professional instead of in-laws may up a companies chance of success.

Honestly TSW pushed me back into being a MMORPG player. before its release i found myself on my PS3 more than my PC. Then post release my PS3 gathered Dust.

Dust huh?  Maybe you should try EVE Online.

Thank you, SB.  Last month I actually tried the game.  I had never tried it because I was tired of everyone calling it an MMORPG, which it is not.  To the devs credit, the CO-OP game is actually well done and other than the P2W business model, I couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I think this game should be the Hybrid Game of the Year here on

I love ES,but im in no way falling for this one..

not until i KNOW for a fact that its good.

How will you ever KNOW if you don't take it for a test drive?  Heck, TOR was like a hot date until you got to 50...

These developers need our financial support.  Without it, it will be more of the same PTW cash shop business models instead of subscription games.

here is how.

If a car dealership tells you, we have these great 4 wheel drive trucks with super cab, they have extra large tires with snow tred on them and a tow package come down and check it out!

If you like motorcycles why would you spend your free time driving down there just to make sure they are actually selling what they say they are selling and not motorcycles?

If ES is an IP that he loves, he should support the devs.  I'm not asking someone who hates the I.P. to support it, that makes no sense.  All I am asking is for that motorcycle guy that loves honda motorcycles is to support his honda motorcycle dealership.  Without support, honda will eventually go out of business and with it goes the brand he loves when all that was needed is financial support to keep honda around.

I don't see any of these as flaws, more game benefits that make GW2 stand out above prior MMOs.

Just wanted to say thank you for completely ingoring the point of my reply.

So... everyone I know has been telling me that I got to play this game.  I've been telling everyone, "hell no" because I admit, I have anger issues toward SOE still over the CU and NGE for SWG.

So... yesterday I create a new account because I didn't want anyone to notice me login to a SOE game if I was on their buddy list because it's the principle of the thing...

Make myself an NC guy... get dropped into a combat zone, character doesn't even finish phasing into the zone when I see that I am dead... Seriously?  I mean SERIOUSLY?  Spawn again... this time I at least get to see the player shooting me in the face... but dead again...

How is a person suppose to learn this game if you are getting killed before you can see to move?

Massively, who just voted GW2 game of the year, is not rosey-eyed fanbois chees'n on the current hotness-

Have some pretty interesting and intelligent arguments against the game that I tend to agree with.

Pretty much highlights the issues I have with the game almost perfectly.

To peak your interest - the highlights in bullet point form-

-Roles are horribly underexplained and unclear

-Dynamic events don't work in their role as quest replacements

-Area flow is problematic

-Crafting is a freaking mess

-The story is weak

Those are some serious issues, but as much as I love the game, I have to agree with the writer of the article.

How does a AAA MMORPG get released with those serious flaws?  I believe it's because projects are so large these companies end up running out of money during development and that decisions have to be made on what they will address after release.

This problem has been getting more profound over the past five years.  Prime examples are AoC, DFO, and WAR-Z.  Each of these games way over promised and seriously underachieved at release.  We all know the history of AoC & DFO, but look at WAR-Z.  Their release was so bad, Valve pulled the game from Steam and now the developer of WAR-Z is defending his company to the point I don't know if they will ever recover from this launch...

Point is, it is obvious companies are running out of cash because no one wants to release products that end up with reviews like what WAR-Z is getting right now.  To help curb this, why not have these companies to have paid beta playing with full wipes at the actually release?  The players can pay a one time fee that is subtracted from the retail price at release.  Players get to sneak peak the game helping debug while developers get a much needed cash infusion the last six months of game development before launch.

The same developers that brought us guild wars and guild wars 2 were the same developers that brought us vanilla WoW.  It is no suprise that Guild Wars 2 is a great game.

WoW was like a perfect storm.  It launched the same month as EQ2 in 2004.  Nothing had come along in a while, nothing else other than those two was releasing that holiday season.  EQ2 failed to gain any traction and by the time it did, WoW was off to the races selling out every available copy the week of release.  Like it or not, WoW went on to peak  at over 13 million concurrent paid subscribers.  That comes out to almost $200 million per MONTH in revenue and to this day maintains around 10 million paid subscribers per month.  It is that success that has allowed developers to take on $100+ million projects.  I doubt we'll ever see another MMORPG with a paid subscription business model that maintains over 10 million subscribers again.  One may not like WoW, but at least respect it because if it wasn't for WoW's success, I don't think most of these games would have been possible.

Too late. Cost EA $200-$300 million for development that goes F2P in less than a year...  I think the ship has already sailed on your question.

-What are your favorite game(s) you bought this year?

WoW - MoP, GW2 and Ultima Online

-Were they for PC, console or a mix of both?

Pure PC gamer here.  Have a Wii that I use for fitness

-What genre were they in? (strategy, rpg, mmo...etc...)

-What do you think was the best game company this year?

-If bought digital, what store did you buy from most (steam, amazon, GOG...etc)

How is the game?

Hey Fun,

Just so you know, I've been here a while and I am not a fan of Tacos or Aventurine.

I'm an MMORPG fan and all I would like to see is a real developer team own this game instead of the current team.  I think the DFO model has merit.  Unfortunately, I don't feel this is the team to be able to deliver a product worthy of the players time or money.

Very close call.... WoW and UO.

Even with the unwanted success of many by those who want to see WarZ fail. It was #1 top seller since it was first put on Steam. They ran out of Steam keys, and had to remove the buy page. HOWEVER, it will be for sale in a few days (estimate).

For those who honestly enjoy WarZ and want to see this succeed, or have not bought it patient for a few days and you'll be able to play this amazing casual zombie survival game. I am very much enjoying it, because it doesn't aim at the hardcore players (which is mostly where the complaints are coming from)...but at the casual players that don't have time to play for long, and want to get things done in an hour or less. This is a great game for that, and it is really cheap to...only 15 dollars.

Sorry sir, you are flat out wrong.  Valve remove it and even apologized to their community.

Don't see Gamespy getting another interview with that company any time soon.  LOL
Problem is, everyone has a different definition of what a sand box is...
It is not the industry, just Aventurine.  There is a reason why they took nearly a decade to get DFO launched in the first place.  This week, I had to laugh.  It's not every day we get to witness a company going on record blaming the interns for the company problems.
