Like many said before me, not everyone is going to want to talk live. Yes many consoles can have keyboards and mice plugged into them making them virtual PC's. I play almost MMO's exclusively, and I wouldnt mind the idea of sharing with console players. But programing future MMO's for console only is something SoE would come up with. (ahm yes that was a slam) The console market is what about 80% 13-23 year olds, while PC gamers average is about the same 80% 21-38 years old. with about 13% under 20. That is a big market of gamers that if they went exclusive console or primary console that they would lose (I'm one of them).
And good example of a great game but shitty interfacing is Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Stunning graphics, stunning world, and a totally fucked up interface because it was designed primarily for a console. I found it so clunky and clumsy I didnt bother to finish the game. And truth to tell I may skip their next one if the interfacing is as horrible as Oblivion was. Now as we all know information you find on the internet could be wrong, but I found out some suprising facts about Oblivion sales. We know that Bethesda sold 1.7 million copies of Oblivion. And as best I could find only about ~250k of that was to consoles (information 2 months after initial release). That means ~1.4 was sold to the PC market. Now Bethesda will not officially release sales totals and break downs. But that is a shot in the foot for consoles being the "medium of choice" for MMO's.
I think Rob Pardo understands that the PC will always be the primary income source for MMOs. I cant for 1 second even believe WoW would have 10 million monthly subscribers, or even a 10th of that if it was designed primarily for the console.
Then again all we'll have to do is wait about 2 more months and see who gets the bigger share for the Age of Conan MMO. My guess is by month 6 after release PC's will have around 80% of the subscriber base (or more).
Cryptic Studios has hinted that its new MMO "Champions Online" maybe designed primarily for the console. Now I cant find the quote...figures. It was somewhere of their sites forums. I think its a big mistake and once I read that I started second guessing whether I would even want to deal with a console to PC port, especially a MMO. |

Quote mccoyy "Dont waste your money"
Agreed!!!!
Its open beta!! (which means its free) Give it a try and decide for yourselves.
"1. too many instances" --not sure why this is a problem, I think most people who give it a try will agree. "2. you can see across the sea..LOL'z" --rwaffelloz back at you, not sure what you mean by this? Anyone want to help me? (Or did he just want to use homonyms in a sentence?) "3. melee combat is about as fun as getting a root canal" --hmm, maybe not as bad as a root canal. I'll say it needs work. It does feel clunky, not as intuitive as combat in say CoH or even Wow. The animations are nice tho. (maybe a combat interlock like the Matrix Online uses may work better)
Its not to say I dont like melee in PotBS. I do, and as a matter of fact I prefer boarding ships vs sinking them. I think its the cooldowns of the abilities maybe, or how you have to build up "points" before you can use them. Yeah I'd say that was part of it, micro-managing the fight. Block-block-block-block-block-use ability (damn it! points dropped below threshhold) block-block-block-use ability (woot! hes dead). Next target: block-block-minor stab-block-block-block---BLEH!
Not quite like that, but sure feels like it. |

Okay people, the suk about Eve is not the difference in skills from a noobie vs a veteran. But the amount of money between a noobie and a veteran , and the amount of time it takes to grind that money.
Eves skill system is the best of any mmo, hands down. It IS possible to catch up to a veteran in skills within a reasonable amount of time and be competitive. |

Its been awhile since I quit, but you know what. I still miss it. And then I think about the flaws and its why I havent resubscribed.
I agree with the OP. I pirated, and to be effective solo you need a T2 cruiser (as an example). And to afford a T2 cruiser you have to grind missions, which btw increases your skill training time because to be effective at running missions you have to train for a battleship and battleship related skills. So you grind missions and train for 6-10 months before you can be somewhat dangerous in a T2 cruiser solo, that btw you can lose in the blink of an eye. Which you will, and you'll just have to grind away at isk to buy the over priced and over-powered ship, to be effective in solo pvp vs another T2 ship.
I had hope, but it was their shitty implementation of rigs that made me quit. I was really hoping rigs would make flying T1 ships (with t2 gear mind you) a viable choice again. We all know how over-powered a T2 ship with T2 gear is compaired to even a T1 ship with T2 gear.
Yet what did they do? The best rigs go on T2 ships, just super f**king over-powering them even more so compaired to T1. They should have let the best rigs go to T1, which would have made flying T1 viable again, thus reducing the cost and the grind-time it takes to have some pvp fun. Who wants to spend hours a day for around a week grinding isk to replace that ship you lost in 40 seconds of fun? F-that.
Eve is like a girlfriend that you love and have been together with for years. And at some point she starts doing drugs and gets F'd up in the head. You still love her but you have to get away cause she doing things that make no sense. And the bad part is you know that the original person you fell in love with is still in there, but nothing you can say will get her to stop doing stupid things.
I still love Eve, I still tell people it was my best gaming experience. And I really want to play again. But until CCP stops being stupid, we wont get back together...ever. (those b*tches) |

Originally posted by bezado Yes, I have to admit I'm not really sure what you're talking about. Are you under the assumption that pirates are over powered like Jedi were in SWG, and everyone will want to be one? Or do you think that everyone will want to make pirate so they can call him Jack Sparrow, and name their ship the Black Pearl? You'll have to explain why you think there will be to many pirates, and what you base it off?
Then you'll have to also explain why forcing people to play to level 50 as a national just to unlock a class that you then have to take to 50 also. How will make it rare or unique? And to go further with your idea; what kind of reward will you get for making level 50 as a pirate, which btw really equates to level 100. You'll have to give them something for their effort, or people wont bother to grind 100 levels. If if they wont bother why include the class anyway?
What FLS are planning to do is the smart thing. Reread what I have bracketed above. Maybe you'll understand better. (and why I dont understand what you're trying to say)
Oh btw if you were unsure. Navy Officer= National, Freetrader= National, Privateer= National. National= French, Spanish, English. Or another way to put it, National= anything but a Pirate. |

From what I get from reading about it and watching youtube vids, its going to be like Eve-lite. If you dont want to PvP just avoid the PvP zones. The pvp zones are not permanent so you can wait till someone wins a port battle and the area around it will become safe. If say the Spanish are attacking French NPC shipping outside of a French port, the more they attack the more they push the area around the port into contention (a pvp zone). The French can attack Spanish NPC's around said port to lower contention points.
Its how I always thought Eve should have been. Low sec empire; if 200 players got destroyed per hour, the controlling empire should send in NPC ships/Concord to protect that area until the players killed thresh-hold drops below a certain level. From what i gather PotBS sort of works that way, you can make a pvp zone safe again by countering. So I see PotBS being played like a giant chess game (in the Caribbean) with four players (nations with hundreds of people) trying to protect their pieces (ports), while trying to take someone elses. I cant wait. |

From what Ive read, there is no great advantage to being a pirate. As a matter of fact it will most likley be just the opposite. As an example, if the pirates capture a nationals port they can only hold it for three days and then it reverts back to the original owner. They can build structures in those three days, but when it reverts back they (the pirates) have to pay an extreem tax. Which means the economy for pirates if going to always be undersupplied. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you want to do damage and have the best ships, be a Navy Officer. If you want to craft and make lots of money, be a Freetrader. If you want to be good at close range combat and grappling other ships, be a Privateer. If you want a challenge, be okay at everything and good at nothing, be a Pirate. (oh yeah and broke all the time, be a Pirate) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have this feeling playing a pirate isnt going to be the easy class, its going to be for the hardcore, I like to be the underdog player. (which is a very small portion of mmo players)
And forcing people to play nationals just to unlock the pirate character...well, I have nothing nice to say about that, so I just wont say anything. |

I love how he starts out insinuating congress are just a bunch of selfserving business people and not publicly elected individuals. And his first sentence I see as a mark of a delusional conspiracy theorist. quote:James Circello "I am sure some of you already know who I am now that wiretaps and spying on American citizens has been approved." You know what, I bet they dont know who you are and further more dont even care. Like the rest of the world.
Hes just some scared person whos afraid hes going to get in trouble for being a deserter. Hes on a soapbox trying to convince everyone hes the good guy fighting against the evil empire. The internet doesnt legitimise anything hes saying. I see him as nothing more than a quack with a sandwichboard on a street corner.
No one cares. You are not important. Just go away. |

Originally posted by miffywiffy I too was there on day one, and played for almost 3 1/2 years after that.
I do remember for the longest time that during the weekdays the server population would be around 400-600 tops and weekends it would be lucky to break 1200. I also remember someone, maybe Hilmer or Nathan saying; that even after launch (something like at the end of the 1st month) they were within days of pulling the plug. And had more or less decided on a Monday to shut down the server on Friday. Then they got the subscription check and it was barely enough to cover operating EVE, and the next one they got was a little more, and the next one was a little more than that, and we all know how it turned out.
And even though I canceled my subscriptions almost two years ago now. I still miss the game. I still love EVE. |

It really depends on how a person likes to play. I think its easy for all three types to play two MMO's If grinding as fast as you can to the highest lvl is your thing, then they'll have to choose one over the other. (in terms of majority of play time) For me, getting there (there being my goal, not nesessarily max lvl) is 1/2 the fun.
I think WAR is doing something only one other game has done so far (EVE) and thats integrate PvP and PvE thru all of a persons gaming experience. PotBS is gonna do it, WAR is gonna do it, I dont see AoC's PvP being meaningful until the higher-end levels. |

I'm sure EA figured that Sims-online would really pull in 400k subscribers and figured E&B with just a tenth of that wasnt worth keeping. I bet after the Sims failed to produce EA was kicking themselves in the ass for closing E&B. Heck all they have to do is look at SOE on how to bleed a game dry with the minimal amount of financial support. I dont need to give examples, we all know which ones I'm talking about. As long as WAR can hold 50k subscribers it will turn a profit (just dont expect any new content). I predict it will easily have 200k subscribers, and likely 600k-800k and maybe more. I have this feeling it may even pull about 25% of the WOW players away. PvP is what kept me playing WoW for as long as it did. And doing only BG's for 6+ months wasnt worth the $15 a month I was paying. Paying $15 a month for what WAR is offering is worth it. Or at least I sure as hell hope so.
And as I remember someone saying in one of their videos; RvR is what is gonna make or break the game. (Its the whole reason I plan on playing). From what Ive seen they're gonna do it right. Sadly I think AoC's combat (the stepping forward while swinging) is gonna make it just suck. From what Ive seen from the PvP videos it just looks sloppy. (and no Im not talking graphics) PotBS and now WAR are the two games I plan on playing, I'll still try AoC, spellweaving is gonna be the "make or break" for me. (That one feature in itself has soooo much potential) |
