You do realize that the publisher does have final say about what goes into a game because they hold the money, right?  It's not like the developer is going to do something that Trion doesn't like, refuse to change it, and continue to exist.  This is the problem many MMOs face at the moment: the people ultimately in charge of the final game are not game developers, they are executives who don't always like to listen to the fanbase.

You do realise that you've fundamentally misunderstood what "publisher" means in the the case of Trion and XLGames ?

Trion are not funding the development of Archeage. They have nothing to do with the development of Archeage.

The entire game development was done and funded by XLGames and launched in Korea, Japan and Russia well before Trion acquired the rights to "publish" the game in the NA/EU zones.

If Trion have too many requests for changes or complaints about the AA game features, XLGames could well refuse to renew the publishing contract with Trion and give it to a "more docile" publisher.

Seriously?  There is a lot that Trion could do.  Anyone thinking that their hands are tied has no clue.  Sure XLGames has responsibility for some of this mess, but Trion knew all about these issues many months ago and did NOTHING!

It is all about money and I find it ridiculous that anyone even attempts to defend Trion.  So much for all the good karma they generated with Rift, they have now lost all of it and then some.

You don't seem to know the difference between a developer and a publisher . All Trion can do is make suggestions to XL Games . Its upto XL Games whether they take that advice or not . For all we know Trion were informing about the issues and XL were ignoring them . Now I suppose what they could have done is pull out of the deal but if they had done that there may have been legal consequences . I'm not defending AA in any way shape or form its been a mess and yes Trion do share some of the burden because they did have too few servers and recent thing about subscribers not getting the cash shop discount that had been advertised was pretty bad but things that go on in the game itself is all down to XL .

I remember the days when the use of "Doom Clone'" or "Quake Clone" were used to describe any new first person shooters that were released . Eventually people realised it was a genre and the use of "clone" to describe new games was dropped because even though they did borrow on certain aspects of the gameplay it that was simply down to it being a genre . To my knowlage the use of "clone" to describe  a new game only really applies to the mmo genre these days which kind of demostrates the level of ignorance of  many mmo gamers . After all WoW was not the first mmo and even though it did offer a level of polish not seen before it also did borrow heavily from games that came before it (both mmos and single player rpgs) . WoW is simply one cog in the evolution of the mmo genre . I'm sure people will keep using the term for years to come until they realize in doing so they look like bloody idiots .
I would leave it six month and take a look at it when things settle down a bit . Its not a terrible game but it does have its problems at the moment .

I suspect given you still have to que to get into a server that its a good bet that a lot of them are still playing . I'm not a big fan of the game myself for me it seems to be mostly about farming going to market doing some pvp on the way and then going back and farming some more .

To quote a scene from Clerks 2 ( talking about the lord of the Rings trilogy there is a lot of walking in this game ) .

Still even though its not for me I can see thus far it seems to be a success but I suspect it will not hang onto those numbers unless things change drastically in regards to the availability of land because new people coming to it are going to have a tough time because they are not part of the landed gentry . I can see Archeage becoming a microcosm of real life where a small minority have all the wealth .

When the dust settles my guess if that it will have about half a million active players which is more than enough to make it a successful business venture for Trion .

It sounds interesting . I keep wondering what this game is like now . I liked some of what I saw in my initial month there but I hated the public dungeons because they were so full of people farming mobs they were unchallenging . The same was true of the solo quests because of the way the public server worked there were always too many people doing the same solo quest as you so it was sometimes hard to even get in a shot on a mob before it was killed again this made it unchallenging and it was this factor in the game that led me to quit but even so I remember thinking at the time I would quite happily give it another try 6 months down the line to see if it had improved at all . I felt the game had potential but it that just wasn't full filled at the time of release .
To me a game is pay to win when there is widespread open world pvp and there are short cuts to better gear via the cash shop available . Archeage is very much a pay to win model in my books .
Where can you download the client without having to pay for a month ?

Worth checking out I guess given I've been disapointed with Archeage

I think Blizzard has realized that mmorpgs as mainstrean are dead, and they are waiting to see where the next big trend goes. Why spend millions on a mmorpg, when a simple card game clone can make just as much with a fraction of the efford and investment.

Blizzard has no values or big goals to be the [insert value] in the world, they are just making games to make money. So it was simple, mmorpgs are high risk with low return of investment in todays market.. Titan was a mmorpg and the calculator had spoken.

Could a simple card game make them over 100 million a month ? If it can good luck to them .

At least the Titanic was launched  lol

I was hoping for something similar to Vanilla WoW but what it seems to be is farming and gathering stuff and going to market ( bit of world pvp as you do so ) and then go back and farm and gather some stuff some more and repeat . I think the biggest problem with it is people from your own faction can attack you .

The land grab made it very difficult for people coming late into the game to get on . It was stupid not to limit the amount of land one person could get per server .Its just led to gold farmers snapping up as much as they could . In many ways this is the type of game I have been waiting for but in other ways it misses the mark so much that I just find it an annoying experience .

The community was a bit of a shock as well I thought WoW was bad until I saw Archeage . The amount of racism in general chat is appalling . Also a friend of mine recent had trouble paying for the upkeep of her land and when she tried to contact customer support she found there was a 4 day wait by which time she would lose it ( and have no hope of getting it back again ) .

It may settle down in six months or so I will take a second look again then perhaps by then Blizzard and XL games will get their act together and the community will improve .

It may be a decent game eventually but I think its one best avoided for the time being .

I quit after spending more than 13 hours in queue during the headstart weekend. Trion took almost a week to get back to me about a refund. They tried to tell me it was "outside their refund policy." In response I said okay, but as a once loyal customer for a couple of years, you'll never get another dime out of me. The next email from them pretty much said, sorry to hear that, get lost.

Thankfully even my credit card company agreed with me, and I got a chargeback.

Like I said, Ill never touch another Trion game ever again.

The thing that struck me most about the ques were Trions customer relations were appalling . We heard nothing from them for almost a week . They should have acknowledged the problem more quickly and announced there would be compensation for the players who had payed . This did eventually happened but it they were very slow in doing this . At the start I actually defended them about this in these forums saying be patient to people who were complaining about this but the situation went on way too long and there was too little communication from Trion .

For me my PC just wouldn't run it well enough . Its a few years old I get about 50-70 fps in the open world on Rift average on high settings but In Archeage in the Elf starter area it dropped to single figures quite often . That was the main reason .

There were other things that made me think twice as well . Trion starting it at 10.99 really made me think it was a cash grab although it has been changed since . The ques were horrendous but that has been fixed now .A fellow guild member was questing and same faction players from another guild came up to him and started bumping into him to stop him doing what he was doing on his farm while this isn't the same as ganking it just struck me the community wouldn't be that great . I didn't like that if you wanted to report another player for say being racist in general chat that you actually have to pay labour points to report him . After the land grab it was virtually impossible to get land for yourself . Friends of mine have found this out recently and were talking about transfering to another server only to find there are no transfers available .

This of course is not all Trions fault they have only a certain amount of control and it is XL games that dictates what they can and cant ultimately do . It didn't appear to be an awful game though and I think it will be moderatly successful . I do think however though that the pay to win element in it will be far more intrusive than in a game like Rift simply because it is PVP orientated .

Had it been something I was certain of I would have brought a new PC to play it but as it is I will hang fire a bit longer . It still plays most of the games I wish to play after all .

I left after the first month . Would love to know what its like now . I actually liked some of it but hated how you always had dozens of other people on the same solo quest as you which made it unchallenging . If they did a welcome back weekend I would try it again .
I have fond memories of Gauntlet from the 1980s . A bunch of friends of mine used to play it in a little beach cafe we used to hang around in when we were about 16 years old in the summer where we had all just finished school . Good to see it still going in some form . Its the first co-op game I ever remember playing . In some ways it was the precursor to what we do now when we do a dungeon in an mmo .

I think Titan was closed down because it was probably just not that good and I will give Blizzard credit where credits due if that was the case at least they didn't push ahead and release something that was sub standard .

The problem is Blizzard for all their money are a company that are very slow in developing new games  I'm sure fans will bring up hearthstone and heroes of the storm but remember this is a company that has made billions in recent years and for the most part they still rely on Warcraft , Starcraft and Diablo .WoW has been its main source of income and that is dropping at an alarming rate . What is it now half of what it was 4 years ago . If I were a share holder I would be wonder why more money hasn't been spent on developing new games in the last 10 years .

Blizzard needs to invest more in its own future . Its a  company that hit the jackpot with one game and it is where it is now because of that one game but it can't rely on that forever.

It might mean that Blizzard is basically a lazy development company who have never really had an original idea. They have always relied on improving other people's ideas to produce content. That's why then never really come up with anything completely new.

amen,i got a free month of wow,and it is the same as ever.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it :)

I've heard that the main reason Titan never went anywhere was because Blizzard never expected WoW to still be doing well.

The problem is WoW wasn't broke and they kept fixing it until it has become so watered down that it a pale reflection of what it once was . If you really believe that is the reason that Titan was closed down you must be one of the most gullible people on this planet .

Actually I quite liked the graphics but I don't mind the Asian style anyway . Sadly my computer intel core i7 2600 3.4ghz , 8gb ram and a Radeon hd 6870 graphics card really stuggled with it on even the lowest settings in the elf starting area with drops in fps to single figures . It made me realize until I could upgrade some of my hardware I would really have no chance in the large open world battles . Anyway theres plenty of other games I enjoy and when the Nvidea 780 comes down in price a bit I might look at Archeage again .

Well from all the feedback i decided to atleast play it for awhile, I should get used to the graphics. Any ways i found out that it was AA causing me to get 15fps, once i shut off radeon pro, my fps went to 30-40. I guess radeon 7950s arent good for AA, in this game.

I switched from the elves to the human, and I am liking the desert better than the forest.

As for the 780 coming down in price, that will take a while lol, like years. The 580gtx is still way to expensive lol. I dont see why a 6870 should be having that much of a problem. A 7950 isnt that much better than a 6870, well i guess I was wrong there. 30.4 and 58.5 fps for bf3 1080p 4x aa ultra settings.

Well as i said i get 30-40 fps with the 7950, you can get one of those for 90-100 dollars.  The 780 gets 103fps in bf3 vs 58.5, but again a 780 is over 300 dollars.  380 for a used one. If you go with a 7970 which you can get for like 125 it gets 75 fps. So i suppose if 25 fps are worth 200 dollars more then :), but i wouldent wait for that to lower in price. Its going to be over 300 dollars for years.  AA will prolly be closed down by then lol.

Thank you for the information I will certainly consider that card . Thing is I would only be upgrading to play Archeage so I think I'm going to hold fire on buying anything just yet . I will wait and see if they are still playing in a few months and if they enjoy the endgame . I have the Rift expansion to play in a week or so and also want to try Star Trek Online so I do have plenty of other things to do in the meantime .

This doesn't surprise me one bit . When Blizzard announced a few months back that they had decided to discard the work done on it to that point and restart the project anew I thought at the time it was just a bit of damage limitation . The funny thing this is the game that many Blizzard fans touted over the years to be WoWs successor .

So where does that leave Blizzard now  . I have long thought given the amount of money they make there is not enough investment in development of new ideas . They rely heavily on Starcraft , Warcraft and Diablo . Although these are successful its really WoW that is Blizzards main income and their subscriber numbers have halved in the last few years . Unless they have secretly started developing WoW 2 even if they started now it could mean it probably be about 5 years or more till we see it released . And the failure of Titan to even to make it to release shows that even Blizzard cannot be guaranteed to come up with a second mmo that can catch the public interest in the way World of Warcraft once did .

If I were a shareholder I would be starting to get a bit nervous right now because even though Blizzard are still making huge amounts of profit I would be having significant doubts about its long term ability to maintain anything like the income it has now .

 What are you talking about?

Hearstone is making them tons of Money for years to come.

The recent release of Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition on consoles was also a huge Income boost.

The upcoming Heroes of the Storm is going to another Income for them.

The MMORPG market is oversaturated! More and more gamers are burned out on the genre, seeing how they jump from one new release to the next. If the game is good or not doesn´t matter.

And I think even Blizzard has now come to a realisation that World of Warcraft was a one hit wonder that won´t be repeated anymore.

And releasing WoW 2 is way too risky for them. Now they have a very loyal customer base still in WoW. People that are too Heavy invested into their characters.

Releasing a successor might do them more damage than good. As it will kill off WoW and in a New WoW2 People will most likely be bored again within 1 to 2 months and move on to the next MMO release, like they do now.

Leaving Blizzard with two dead MMO´s.

I personally think that is the main reason why the project has been canceled. They have just seen that this is not the time anymore to release yet another MMO into a dying market and that it´s better to invest in other markets instead, like they are doing with Hearstone and the upcoming Heroes of the Storm.

If Blizzard is good at something (seeing Starcraft), then it´s them turning Heroes of the Storm into a huge e-Sport franchise.

So you can bet that is where their full focus is on right now.

I really don't think you have a clue about what I was talking about .I sometimes think some of you people react without thinking things through or you don't actually absorb what it written down ( which wont bode well if your at school or further education for your future ) I didn't imply Blizzard couldn't turn a profit at all I just said the most likely outcome without having a new mmo would be to see a decline in those profits over the years .

When I say a lack on investment in developing new ideas I meant significant new games not a card game and team brawler . Blizzard have enough money to have developed something like the Dragon age series but the pace their development has been very slow and they are very lazy in coming up with new concepts . They basically rely on Warcraft , Starcraft and Diablo as franchises for the most part . This is a company that has made billions .

Do you seriously think Blizzard would be able to maintain anything like the income they have now ( or in the past ) relying on games such as Diablo , Heroes of the Storm and Hearth Stone  and the e sports you mention? Not that they are bad games but its monthly subscriptions from an mmo that generate the largest proportion of those profits and WoWs subscription numbers are falling at an alarming rate . What are they now ? nearly half what they were 3 or 4 years ago .
