Lol so he basically said "we were messing with you we never intended to actually allow all that, we just wanted to fuck with the mod developers a bit make them do a lot of work we knew won`t be in at launch, ha ha we totally fooled you"

In other words they were afraid so they removed most of it.

The fact that you can`t see your own buffs if they are shorter than 30s shows how stupid they can be... i mean not being able to see YOUR OWN BUFFS that you can on YOURSELF... now you must count in your head or with a stop watch to see when it is over, truly immersive and worthy of an ESO game.

They need to remove a few more things that way streamers won`t always say "oh i thought they already fixed this bug" all the time because they won`t see any buffs/debuffs or damage numbers so no way to notice the many bugs still in the  game.

Great job ESO Team, keep at it, the fact that many mods were now changed to make fun of Paul Sage is clearly a sign that the modding community that supported all the previous Elder Scrolls games thinks you are doing a fine job.

No one is forcing you like or approve of what ZOS is doing.  I am personally glad of the decision they made.

If you need a mod to succeed in a game then either you lack the skills needed to be successful or you lack the experience.  The good thing is both can be improved by working for it.  Skill is capped by mother nature though where experience has no limit.

You needed a mod in the first place because ESO is the only MMO where while you need to cast short 20 second buffs on you, you can`t see the duration - lol.

It should be clear how frustrating this is when you must do it almost every fight. This is my problem, i can`t see my own buffs and its annoying to guess.

I`m willing to bet it will be annoying for most people at launch.

Umm there is already an updated mod out there using the new API that shows your buffs and debuffs on yourself.  So many misinformed people again saying OMG they gutted the API when they did not.  Here let me help you and many others who think this is not allowed....

He nailed it on the head with WHY this was a beta to test out the API and what could be done with it and a true beta accomplished what it was supposed to in regards to the API specifically.

The blog post seems to echo two of the bigger gripes I had with the 3 beta weekends I played in: bad console port, and bad UI.  The game has quite a bit going for it, enough that I pre ordered with the 2nd beta weekend.  Then the API was gutted, and I canceled the pre order.  I could stomach fixing the UI with mods, but removing that option sealed the deal.  I look forward to playing the game, but will wait to see if the UI mess straightens itself out.

As for people talking about a free to play model, the muti-platform release makes it unlikely.  It will have to go B2P like TSW because of the console sales.

API was NOT gutted.  Addons like minimap and lots of others still work fine.  There is also already an addon with the new API that still shows buffs, debuffs, damge done, etc.

Another user pointed me to this updated addon that uses the current API and you can clearly see it is nowhere near as gutted as people cry about.  Look at the screenshots that show you what you can still see - a LOT.  They gutted the stuff where people could basically use the addon info and macros to basically have the macro play for them and would also allow for those "private, shady" addons....

Bottom line is the guys's post are full of inconsistencies and he is trying to pur in reasons to cover up why he is really quitting - the API nerf.  The poster earlier nailed it when they quoted him 1 month ago.  What we know from this guy is this:

1) He supposedly has not been able to log into PTS for a month now

2) However, 1 month ago he posted how addicting this game was, how open-ended the progression was, and just raved about it

3) So he did a 180 change of heart in 24 hours over some huge decision by Zenimax?  Sorry but normally this BIG of a change in heart takes time to fester not overnight according to all of his posts.

4) His timeframes do not match up at all - it makes you wonder at the end of the day is this indeed tied to the Templar nerf/API changes

*** He wrote it up nicely and I think tried to cover up the API changes as the real reason.  He also has some valid points BUT most seem to be so minor if anything.  I just do not think we got the whole story and truth from that blog post....

I actually agree with the OP.  Look at this video the 2 minute mark - are they really leaving telegraphing in for PvP.  If so that is just a bad design if you ask me - it just dumbs it down way too much!

Hey everyone,

Blog author here, and because I am apparently the idiot everyone on this site thinks I am, I thought plunging into the Lion's Den would be a fun way to spend my lunch break today. It's a Monday. It was expected to be shitty anyway.

The major thing I would like to clarify is that if at any point during the read, you thought to yourself, "who the fuck is this guy and why should I care", then you simply aren't my target audience. Regardless of your opinion of me as a person, it is undeniable that I am fairly well known in at least my little corner of the TESO community through my participation on Tamriel Foundry and Twonkhammer's TESOCast, and I don't think it's unreasonable for me to assume that people who are fans of those outlets would be interested in my departure.

As I said in the post, those are the people that this article was written for - the ones I know personally, and the ones that follow me personally; this is why I posted it to my low traffic blog, and not Tamriel Foundry itself. I shared my post on my personal Twitter, my guild forums, and the off-topic forum of Tamriel Foundry, the site which I have helped to run for the last year. While it has made its way to and Reddit through other posters, none of that was my doing, because in all truthfulness, I agree with you guys. You don't know who I am, and I wouldn't expect you to care.

The target audience defines a lot about my approach to the piece, which I believe has lead to some confusion now that several thousand people outside of that audience have found their way to it. While the post is merely a telling of my personal loss of faith in the game and its developer, it has been approached as if it were a review, meant to inform or sway the opinions of a lot of people. I don't blame the confused for the misunderstanding, as the style they are interpreting the post as being is a lot more in line with my past writing than the one in question.

In the end though, the post should be viewed for what it actually is - a personal blog post, which should only be held to a slightly higher standard than a Facebook post.

With the post now properly framed as an insight into my own personal choices and not a review meant to persuade or enact change, a lot of the post should make more sense. Some have accused me of "crystal-balling" due to the post being entirely future focused, but when I have already seen the content that is currently in the game, what other standard should I use for my own personal purchasing decisions? Many have mentioned that the length I stuck with the game indicates that I'm full of it, but this is something the post already addressed, multiple times, with a disclaimer at the top and bottom noting that many people will get their money's worth and enjoy the content that is already in game. That's a great standard for those people to choose by, and for them, there is my comprehensive review. It's not appropriate for me though; I've been there - I've done that, and the future is all the game would hold.

For me to drop money on the game, I have to be convinced that TESO has what it take to survive in the market as a long-term MMORPG. I want to think that it does, but based on my beta testing experience, and experience with the MMO market in general, I really don't think it will. The post wasn't made to convince people that I'm right. If you think the game holds a future for you, then I recommend that you buy it. Its purpose was to explain, to those who cared, that the uncertain future is the reason I will no longer be around.

And that's what it came down to. Do I stay with the game and get burned by another MMO, even when I see it coming, or do I cut my losses and avoid spending money on a game I have no faith in? I chose to play it cautious, for once.

You were 100% on board with this game until the API changes.  I think the highlighted statements and much of your blog post are a bunch of hot air that you may even be telling yourself in an effort to justify your stance of not playing due to your anger about that one decision.  Hey I've done the same thing at times - something really pisses me off and then I look for a lot of other things to fuel that anger passion, even though those things weren't as big of a deal before the one thing really pissed me off.  And if the API changes were a big enough deal to you then there is nothing wrong with quitting over it - we all have our things.  But these last 2 paragraphs here, come on, lol.  You're quitting because you're "not convinced the game can survive in the mmo market."  ppssshhhhhhh

This is a popular theory I see ascribed to me, which I attribute mostly to the degree that I focused on the API in my final post. Even at the time, I felt that I had dwelled on it a bit too long, but it was a timely and relevant example of a lot of the problems I have had with the development team. While the change and the way they made it certainly helped to push me out the door, it was other factors which had me standing in it. I'd also like to point out that we can still do quite a bit more with the API than the public realizes at this point, so it wasn't as big of a deal to me as some people may think. The action wasn't a big deal, but the design philosophy and intent it represents does exemplify a lot of the doubt I had as to whether or not the game would be for me.

Still, while I don’t think this is an unreasonable response to what I’ve written, at the same time, what I’ve written wasn’t an exhaustive write-up either. I chose to focus on my doubt for the future of the game because it is important, but there were other causes beyond changes in the most recent patch.

I have actually barely been able to log onto the PTS for around a month now. It’s partially the bugs, horrendous balance, and other technical problems, but it also boils down to a fundamental problem I have with the endgame philosophy behind TESO. In the end, I think it’s the amount of questing the game forces on you (I’m including the other types of open world content as questing, for simplicity). I’m not a big quester, and while I’ve enjoyed it in some games, TESO’s quests just aren’t my type of thing. I love the way they fit into the world, and the emphasis on narrative focused chains rather than one and done kill quests is great, but they don’t grab me in the same way that The Secret World, or even SWTOR’s (to a much lesser extent) do.

That’s all personal preference, but where other games have quests as an annoying content gauntlet you grind through to get to endgame, in TESO, those quests are a large part the endgame, and this annoyed me far more than I expected it to. I liked +/++ content in theory, and in theory, I liked how lengthy the VR grind turned out to be. In practice though, the extended quest grind really, really bothers me, and it’s just not something I could bring myself to do again. This is a design that some people are going to love, but having tried it in the PTS, I can say with complete confidence that I am definitely not one of them.

To tie it back into the game’s future though, this model is not going to bode well with a lot of the MMO community. Launching without adventure zones was not a good idea, and the extended quest grind covering up their absence may prove more egregious then the absence itself, especially in light of the difficulty associated with leveling VR through PvP or grinding; questing is nearly the only viable option right now.

The game really, really needed to be pushed back six months at the very least. That’s not going to happen though, and it's yet another flaw the game may yet pay the price for.

I have to say that I am also having a hard time not seeing your recent statements about the game's prognosis as anything other than rationalized projections to make yourself feel better about your decision.

To say that you disagree strongly with the recent Templar nerf, as you did loudly at the TF, and that you felt betrayed by the API nerf, and that this is why you made a personal decision to stop playing after 9 months is one thing.

To use that as a launching pad to predict doom and F2P conversions is something else altogether and pretty thin.

I also post at the TF and have seen your bitterness about the API and your sarcastic comments implying that "hiding the numbers" makes it easier for them to nerf the Templar.

I have a pretty good idea as do most members there and here why you did a 180 degree turn in one month,

A month ago you were saying this:

"Crafting being a viable form of progression has accompanied the best crafting system I’ve seen in a themepark MMO, and there are a lot of ways in which I feel it will foster a strong social element to the game’s economy. There’s a lot of customization involved, crafters’ names are permanently displayed on gear they have created, and there’s no auction house to dominate the economy. I’m pretty happy with how the economy looks right now.

The biggest thing for me though is probably the progression. It’s open-ended. It’s fun. Sure, a lot of the abilities aren’t exactly compelling right now, but that’s just a balance issue – and even in that situation, there’s still a lot to look forward to as you’re leveling your character and collecting skyshards. It’s addicting.

And this is the best thing about the game. It is addicting, and it’s addicting in a way that I haven’t felt from an MMO in a very long time. No, it doesn’t grab you right away – and that’s a problem we’re seeing from a lot of the reviewers who didn’t get very far – but once the game opens up, there’s actually a lot to like, and that, for me, is the spark that lights my hope for the game’s success.

And now, despite "...barely being able to log on to the PTS for about a month..." we are to believe that the game you found so charming and addicting a month ago all of a sudden has a cloudy F2P future?

Sorry man, I appreciate your respectful posts and excellent writing style but I'm having a hard time believing that even you believe all the other things you are now saying about the game after they pissed you off with the Templar and API nerfs.

Spot on man - he just wrote the green like 1 month ago, lol  Now spewing the exact opposite after Templar/API changes....

He is probably the single most prominent ESO community member.  I believe he is the main driving force behind the preeminent fan forum Tamriel Foundry.

That he has abandoned the game after unselfishly sinking so much time is an incredible red flag.

Wow!  Never thought I would see this happen.  Fascinating.

Are you for real?  Yeah I know who this guy is - just another dude with an opinion like you or me.  No more important, no less.  That he has abandoned the game means as much to me as every other person on this board or anywhere else who has posted over the last few months saying they aren't going to play ESO at launch anymore for ___________ reason.  I can make my own decision about whether I want to play a game or not and so should you.  "Him leaving is an incredible red flag."  Seriously, good lord.

Spot on - dude leveled multiple 50's and got burnt out.  Once he saw the API changes he decided okay I am done.  As I said if there had been NO API changes I doubt you see that blog post - simple as that.

I would like to address his points

lousy exterminator: every change will lead to bugs. It is very normal. That's why changes are released first to PTS before going live. Probably, before releasing it to PTS, it will be tested internally.

Lazy-eyed vision: While I agree with the lack of feed back the future will bring, it is again can be changed if the PTS or internal testing dealt with the balance and end-users using the patched up UI. Having a separate code for each of the servers (live and testing) could help with this transition. I believe the patch did not destroy the UI entirely, but it makes it open for improvement.

Mo’ money mo’ problems: Paywall = locking content. Imperial race IMO, is not locking content. Paywall= locking adventure zones.

Con-fidence: same rant as the money problem. A speculation to F2P. WoW have also done mount services in the past. No surprise.

100% fully agree there.  I honestly think if the beloved API changes had not come we would not have seen that blog post.  The rest of the issue are very minor.  I also think that when you play 95% of the game and have reach VR10 on PTS then you also lose a lot of incentive to play - because you have already done it all.

Like others have said he sounds like he simply got burned out.  I mean he played for 9 months and that tells me there will be plenty to do!

Fully support this change to the API.  Many of those addons were giving folks a big advantage and left things open for other shall we say methods to do other shady things.  People really enjoyed the game without the addons before and I am sure all will be well.

Besides most of the addons still work just fine - you simply do not have the one addon that gives every piece of information it seems about the other player.

Wonder what their idea of not long is :)  Maybe all night lol
I became worried about this game once I heard their awful idea of combat being a card game.  Sorry but HUGE turn off and I think is just horrible.  I want my skill to matter not luck based on some cards...

They even admit it, yet they try a game which is unashamedly and unapologetically a "themepark" game. I just don't understand why people do that...

Don't try to discredit me, My observations are still valid.

But like others have said, they were preaching that they were going to be different. they arnt.

This right there and exactly what I highlighted in my post.  They hyped their game how different it was and I honestly feel they tried to hype the "Paths" as sort of sandboxy (just my opinion) and they are nothing but more themepark, grind quests.

Anyone else feel this way?

Yep - this WAS one of my big MMO's to watch for in 2014.  Finally got into some weekend beta's and bored out of my mind seeing how dumbed down it was to go along with the grind.  It is a horrible grind.  This has now changed from one of my picks of 2014 to honestly I think it might very well be the "Biggest  Flop of 2014".

The reason it might end up the biggest flop is how much the devs touted how much different it was what they were doing and yet it is not.  The paths were hyped up big time by the devs and how unique/great they were.  The explorer path was one I was excited about and then the first Explorer path quest I have to jump up some appearing blocks to get up to the top of some satellite or something - COMPLETE letdown and just another 100% themepark quest.  Nothing new and unique like they stated.

I mean, if you're going to take the position that as written it applies to all physical damage, why stop there? Why not also spell damage?

From the AMA....

Cheers! Is there a reasoning that the Khajiit passive Carnage doesn’t work with Bow/Ranged attacks?

That’s a bug. Whoops! I thought we fixed it already. I’ll check to make sure that’s fixed today! Should be good to go for launch.

Can someone clarify if the Kajiit racial bonus helps bow users damage output...and exactly how it does  help ?

Stealthy: yes - 10% dmg increase for attacks out of stealth or invisibility

Carnage: no

are u saying that carnage 15% crit dmg doesnt apply for bows?

They are just misinformed.  It has been confirmed numerous times that +15% crit dmg DOES apply to bows since it is physical damage just like melee damage.  So this is still a damn good racial period and very, very worthwile.

The real question is how long will Carnage continue to apply to bows when you consider that even the most casual weekend tester knows that the Khajiit currently have a big advantage over the race, Bosmer, that is supposed to be the best at bows?

If you roll a Khajiit for bows, you're taking a huge chance. You'll soon see a patch note that says:  "* Carnage now only applies to melee damage as intended" I just hope they do it before release or the whining by all those Khajiits will be loud when they realize their secret OP race selection wasn't as secret or as OPd as they thought.

If they made such a dratic change like that post launch they sure better offer a race change or they will be hearing it from a LOT of people.

Since when do bug fixes need explaining? Assuming it is a bug.

Oh and theres gonna be a lot more drastic changes than that, its an MMO. And people will be crying regardless.

Exactly they need to state ASAP if a bug or not as a lot of NB are using this race because of that racial bonus just like other classes are going certain races for said class bonus.  This impacts a lot of builds and would be insane to change it per say after someone rolls it and hit lvl 30 and then oh by the way we made a mistake.  This is not your typical bug fix, etc.

Not concerned here at all.  Started a brand new character and I think there was 1 quest I could not finish only.  All others a simple logout addressed the issue.

People tend to forget just how damn buggy WoW launch was.  ESO will do just fine.

Bad game design is still bad game design no matter how cheap it is.  They need content and a lot of it...
