Ok so you played Ultima Online when you were 12 years old (1997)? Sorry if I might sound sceptical but I have a hard time believing that a 12 year old would be playing Ultima Online, since the only way you could play those games was to have your own credit card or have one of your parents own the game and made an account and subscription for you. Not saying it's not possible. But still. I don't remember any 12 year olds playing Ultima Online.

Outside of that i've never been really challenged in an MMORPG.  Perhaps Wildstar, WOW, or SWTOR has challenging raid content?  You could check that out before abandoning the genre altogether.  Maybe someone who has done some challenging PVE could help.

See thats what I was talking about. This generation does not know what the older MMORPG"s were like. Because these newer MMORPG's are all they know. It's not their fault. But those were much more in-depth, challanging and rewarding that would keep you playing for months and months because not everyone could do the same content or running around with the same armorsets or items. It made you feel like you wanted to work harder and play longer. The content also was much more indepth in a way that required more thought instead of just clicking a few keyboard keys. Wildstar, WoW, and SWTOR are about as hand holding as you could get. The games I'm referring too are games like Everquest 1, SWG PRE CU, Dark Age of Camelot, Ultima Online. Those MMORPG's were much more indepth then what we get now, and it's sad that some of you never got to experiance these games back then. Even the old version of WoW offered more depth and challange then any of these games do now. The AI was better too. In the old WoW the mobs would work together and you had to plan your attack first and use your CC or else you would get plowed. Now none of it is like that because the players complained it was too hard.

I'm pretty sure no one here will understand this concept though.

I hope I don't upset anyone posting this. It's not my intention to upset any fans of this game. If you love Archeage I'm happy for you and hope you really are enjoying it!! I could really careless if people like the games I don't like because everyone has their own tastes so please again. I hope you just take what I say with a grain of salt. Because It's just one guys opinion and my opinion means nothing on these forums. I'm not looking for an argument either. I'm a bit beyond that and arguing about stuff over video games is just juvenile so if you want to argue or make comments that have nothing too do with the topic I'll just ignore it and not respond.

Anyways. I'll begin..

I'm an older gamer and I loved the older Sandbox games. I certainly don't like them for nostalgia reasons either that everyone seems to make that excuse here. But I find all these new games are just so boring because they are so simplfied and easy that I just get bored of them very quickly. For a game that advertizes itself as a "sandbox" I really feel that it's false advertizing. (And yes it did advertise itself as that) From everything I read about this game over the years it makes itself look like a game that is indepth, complex, and challenging with reward. I'm not saying this is a "Bad" game. It's got some cool features in it were you can build your own ships, trade, housing, grow crops, but all of it is done in such a way that's so simplistic and simple I actually got pretty bored of it quickly. Not to mention the character creation that looks really indepth but actually isn't at all. Even Elder Scrolls Online has more indepth character creation then this.

Another thing I just can't stand anymore in these new MMORPG's is how stupidly easy the mobs are and how easy everything is too do in the game. I don't know if it's this hand held, silver spooned, generation of gamers or the developers who feel they need to make every single one of these games like this because they get so many complaints from people who can't be bothered to research things to understand the mechanics of the game, or the class's or skills they are using. The only thing maybe remotely sandbox'ish about this is the open world. The graphics are great, the gameplay is great, but yet again.

It's just more like a simplified themepark for these gamers that are too lazy too do anything and earn something. Instead people are forced to play these simplified mmorpg's because it's apparently what they all want now. I promised myself if Archeage was not going to be somewhat of an indepth, sandbox mmorpg with some form of challange were I can actually use my brain then I am retiring from playing these types of games because frankly they are a waste of money and non of them have even peaked my interest in the last 9 years. I don't want to sound like an elitist asshat but I even find now that some single player rpg's have more depth and challange to them then most of these games, and these are single player games. MMORPG"s i remember were suppost to be indepth and offer more then the single player rpg's thats why you paid a sub fee and also for more content. I just dont and never will get this generation of MMORPG gaming. The older online MMORPG games were way better then any of these games. Period. And I feel really sorry for this generation because they never got too experiance the older games were community and hard work was all that made these types of games so unique and bring hard core and casual gamers together.

Thanks for reading everyone :)

This is incorrect. As a Modeler for 12 years and digital Artist of 16 years I find this article filled with a lot of Rhetoric and Nonsense. Whomever wrote this really needs too do their research, especially when your talking about something as technical as modeling in video games because every engine is different and can be as flexible or very limiting to the artist depending on it's capabilities. The Hero Engine is quite flexible in terms of modeling, cutscenes, texturing and using resources for the developer. The only thing that the Hero Engine lacks is that it can only handle so many objects and resources in a single zone or "area" in the game world the developers create with the Hero Engine IE "No Open World"

That's why everything has to be instanced and phased. Most gamers do not understand this concept which is not their fault at all because not all gamers are modelers, designers, or artists who have worked with developing video games. I did in my early and mid 20's. I'm in my 30's now and you may remember such games as Endless Ages, AVP2 when I helped a team of gamers model and skin in game models for their un-official expansion pack. I also worked on Quake 3 arena models back in the day and created many that were listed on the mods database back in the late 90's, and early 00's.  Most players think the Hero Engine is terrible simply because it doesn't support "Open World" which really is not a very good argument because the Hero Engine is one of the most stable and economically friendly engines out there. It's the very reason why the development team chose the Hero Engine in the first place. It was discussed by Bioware before the game came out and explained their reasons for using it.

The Bioware Developers, Artists and Designers could put in any kind of race as a playable race into the game, especially races that are already put in place as NPC's. The adjustment for the cut scenes, story scenes is not as bad as you claim it is. It still would need to be adjusted yes, but very little in terms of "how much" It would take many months if not half a year to edit all the scenes but make it so that all the humanoid and alien races would show in the cut scenes. You also forget to mention that some of the cut scenes in the game were poorly done and still have not been fixed.

And the last and most important thing you forgot to mention was that it really has nothing too do with what the developers are capable/not capable of doing. Iit's the question of how much resources, money and time it would take to do all this. The big issue has nothing too do with how much work but how much resources the developers have to work with. You forget that a portion of that money goes to EA as well. EA has Bioware by the balls now since they sold out the company.

You got to remember Bioware used to be a "more" independent company when Black Isle and Bioware were working together. They were able too be more flexible in their development outline for their games because they were not relying on another company's to support them so much as they do now with EA. They need to keep this game going with enough resources and money coming in each year. Or EA will drop them like a sack of potatoes for their funding of the servers. That is why the Bioware developers are careful about discussing major projects like this.  It was the same with their space project. This new housing project was funded mostly by all the subscribers and players who had purchased things through the cartel market. Not to mention all the stock investors.

If the players ever see a new race added to the game like the Cathar, it won't be for awhile and it will only be more "humanoid" race because it will cost less and require less resources for them in the least amount of time. Not because the developers just "can't" do it. The developers can do it. The Hero Engine is capable of producing more assets, races, and tilesets to the game. It's just that Bioware does not have a huge group of people working on the game when they did in the development phase. It's just the company is trying to save every nickle and dime hoping everyone has a job for the next year. Which obviously shows Bioware cares about their employee's, unlike most company's do. Gamers really have no idea how much money and resources it requires to make and let alone keep these games running.

And Just so you know guys there are Jawa Jedi's in the game already. There is also a Jawa companion and Jawa NPC's of all sorts of variations. Female and Male already implemented into the assets of the game :)

Good bye

It's always funny to me how emotionally dramatic some gamers get who feel the need too argue and complain back and forth about what they feel makes a MMORPG and go on and on about pointless crap for 9 pages that has absolutely nothing too do with the original posters topic at hand.
Wow for Real? I'm surprised so many people like this game. Not that you shouldn't. Every gamer has their own tastes on what games they like/dislike but rating any MMORPG a 10 for just simply because of graphics and a twitch gameplay system? No offense, but have you people on mmorpg become sheep going for any carrot that comes along? Are you fanbois? or are you really saying this is a that great of a game? All people did was complain how terrible Age of Conan, Vanguard, All Points Bulliten,  Star Trek Online, Fallen Earth, and EvE Online, but then the very same people highlight games like WoW, Rift and other WoW formula'd themepark games at a 10? When In my view those games are just simplistic theme parks. Not bad games at all, but they are simplistic and same  based formula's that have been done over and over again 10 billion times in every themepark mmorpg that has ever been release, that a lot of adult gamers are sick of but for the kiddy gamers it's new to them so they just think it's batcrazy amazing.

I played Wildstar in beta and thought it was "Alright" but nothing really to shake a stick at. Character creation was "ok". The Undead is always nice. Gameplay is nice but it isn't everything either. Some of you here are even rating this game on "Graphics"? Really? God this website has really gone down the tube in terms of attracting hardcore gamers and more so attracting the silver spooned gamers who like everything done for them. IMO what makes a good MMORPG is an in-depth, complex system which Wildstar does not have because it's a theme park designed for casuals and childern. Right now I'm playing Archeage and Find it more in-depth then all of these simplistic themeparks you have listed on your front page.

Maybe I'm just getting old but it seems this generation of gamers really have no idea how good the games were back in the day and seem to just passively accept hand holding theme park games like this. Yes it's a "nice" looking game, but no game should ever be held in a high regard simply because it looks "Nice" and has a different combat system. I remember almost 8 years ago there used to be some actual Hard Core gamers on this site like Loki666 and others, but I think I see why I don't see them anymore. Most of the real adult hard core MMO players have left this site probably because of what I've noticed over the years here. It makes me wonder if these people are being paid to advertize these reviews because if this was 10 years ago this would of been the less hyped up games on mmorpg.com which it has been many times on here.

Before you buy the game don't assume things too much and take what people say here with a grain of salt, myself included, because you get a lot of fanbois on these forums and social media sites like youtube who hype things up like the game is the second coming of jesus and say things that are necessarily not true.  IE "Sovrath" claiming the game is purely subscription based when it's already been stated by Trion along time ago the game will be doing the rift approach and be free-to-play for people who don't want to pay a sub fee while giving others who want Patron subscriptions and Buyable passes on the market for people who want to unlock the ability to build houses and own land. But the game will be accessible and playable by anyone regardless if they pay for the game or not. So yes the game will be "F2P" That's the "F2P" part of it. The subscription part of it is if you want everything unlocked. Kind of similar to SWTOR but Archages F2P system "I hope" won't be as limited and terribly run as what EA/BIoware have done and milk you out of your money even more on top of having to pay a sub then realizing you have to pay more money to unlock other things in the game to progress.

That being said. I've bought the 150$ and been playing it. This is coming from someone who really loved SWG PRE CU / PRE NGE and loved these types of sandboxy, crafting, building pve/pvp games. IMO It's an "Ok" game but it isn't the second coming of jesus what a lot of casual gamers and younger people in their 20's and teens claim it is. I imagine this is very new to them and granted there are some interesting features in the game. It's really not what some people assume the game is. It's definitely more in-depth with much more features then most mmorpg's, but I don't think it really takes much anymore for any rpg to be considered in-depth, because of all the dumbed down mmorpgs that have been around for the last 12 years.

The character creation although looks in-depth, it really isn't at all. EvE online and ESO have much more in-depth character creation then Archage does. The other thing that I really didn't care for very much was that Tailoring and Leatherworking don't start really until you are lvl 20+ because the armors and cloths you can craft are all 20+. There is also not very many Leatherworking recipes right now and maybe they will add more. I don't know. I don't really care either. Other than those two things that I don't like and maybe the lack of translation? and old questing "go here, do that"? But that is nothing because it will take the developers time to translate the game and I certainly don't think you can fault them for an "Alpha" based MMORPG all these things are to be expected and something I've learned to just live with while playing anything just released or in working progress for any pc game, especially one that promotes a lot of features.

I will say other then the 2 things I didn't like, the rest of the game is very well done. It's a "good", "ok" game. I think it probably will be the best f2p game on the market, it certainly offers a lot more then Rift or SWTOR. But thats just me and I can't say your going to really like it or not. If people here want to argue with me not really liking having to wait till lvl 20 to make leather armor or tailor my cloth stuff I really dont care and probably won't even read the comments because I have better things too do with my time then argue with people on a games forum about pointless stuff. I'm just letting you know what I thought to give you an idea what you may expect or not, but we all have tastes in what we like and don't like. I'de say go for it, but just be mindful how much your paying too. I hate to see people waste their money on something they assume is going to be great but then realize it wasn't what they were expecting.. I don't know call me an empathic gamer that cares for others I guess?

Cheers,

-Trash

What the hell? lol Reading this article from the CPP PR is like hearing a broken record all over again, they said the same thing with the original DUST that it was going to evolve into the EvE universe with the PC players who Play EvE Online, combining the two games together. Now they are back with something new and saying in this article that it's just now come to their minds that maybe they might try and see if they can combine the two games together? Hahahahahaha! I'm laughing my butt off right now typing this. omg thats priceless! I don't know what CPP has been smoken but damn maybe they have been sitting on their computers too long and have radiation poisoning. Seriously they lie about so many things. and make promises they never keep. They must think we are all stupid or something. Like this wasn't thought of before? lmao! Sorry still laughing here.

this needed to be done along time ago in wow. Like maybe when burning crusade came out with the new blood elf model. They should have updated all the models then and in wrath of the lich king add in housing. I think its a lie that Blizzard said they didnt have enough resources at the time too do that. They did. They just were being cheap and didnt want to spend the money and hire people too do it.

Agreed Ethan! Activision Blizzard, and all the rest of these profiteering gluttons who only care about the almighty dollar that have no heart, that care nothing for the games they create other then to make a quick buck and move onto the next project can stuff it!

Divergence all the Way!! Keep up the great work Ethan. I love supporting indie projects were the development team actually gives a damn about their creations and not just see it completely as a great big gold mine.

Who cares what other people think of the game. Why do you gamers on mmorpg.com waste your time arguing about such trivial drivel that doesn't really matter in the end anyways. It doesn't effect me that a bunch of people already hate eso, I'm still going to play it. Maybe I will like it, maybe I won't. Who cares.

Does anyone ever talk about anything worthwhile on this site anymore? I'm starting to see why we don't see Loki666 anymore and most of the old vet posters on this site.

All that stuff you hear in Interviews and Game trailers is all PR Bullsh**. Every game developer says they love their subscribers but it's like real life. Actions speak louder then words. Wake up and Lets get back to reality here. If you want to continue buying EA/Bioware products and feeling ripped off then the developers will continue Ripping gamers off and laughing all the way to the bank. F2P is a lot like the Government, because it's only good if it's handled properly in a moderate manner were the customers are respected by the developers and company when they don't have to feel like they are being continually milked like they are in SWTOR. SWTOR is a descent game, but the Companys EA/Bioware who run it really have Respect for their subscribers at all, or the Starwars game itself, but just use it to Make millions each year. EQ2 has a fair and descent cashshop system and so does most other F2P Games because when you subscribe there is no unlocking too do. Everything in EQ2 for instance the SC Market Place is all Cosmetic you don't have to buy anything out of it at all, Plus they give you 5 free packs of cards that reward you with free loot and includes 500 SC cash. the Cartel Market used to reward players in the beginning with 1 Cartel Pack Free and 600 Cartel Coins. But they got cheap and greedy, so Now they just Give you 500 Cartel Coins a Month and no Cartel Pack. Yeah your not getting ripped off right? Wrong.

Yeah same here. Thats why I am done with new mmorpg's. The developers want to cater to the kiddy crowd and the people who like simplified action gameplay, as long as its easy and simple for them to understand they all jump on the bandwagon.. Thats were developers think they make the most money now.

Actually the OP is right. He's done his research and knows what he's talking about. He obviously knows EQ and has played it along time like myself. I was really hyped for EQNext as well. I love EQ2, but as soon as my Guild Leader told me about the game and what they plan on doing with it. I later realized it will be more like playing an action rpg with a lot of housing options then an actual MMORPG. I hope this post dosnt get removed by the mods on this site, or people posting their thoughts get suspended for having an opinion on EQNext. Negative or positive its all good for gamers to share their thoughts. There is way to much fanboism on this site and not enough Factual information. I ended up having too do my own research and talking to other people then listening to some of the people on this site.

No idea why this post would get locked - it's not negative at all. Just pointing out my mistake of getting unrealistically hyped for a game like SWTOR and the reasons to be cautious for this game.

Hell, EQN could end up being the next "big" thing for all of us. We don't know what's going to happen. But from the information we have thus far (and lack thereof) I think it is actually unhealthy to become obsessed the way we are capable of at this point in time.

You must be new to the site. Yes negative posts sometimes get removed. Don't worry I'm on your side I'm not looking to argue with you. I don't do that. I like you're post. Very informative. I agree with you for the most part, but I don't think this game will be the next best thing. People get too overly hyped over games on this site though. Lots of fanboi'ism you will find here. I don't visit this site much anymore because of it. The community here is depressing.

Actually the OP is right. He's done his research and knows what he's talking about. He obviously knows EQ and has played it along time like myself. I'm not being sarcastic saying that either. I'm serious. And props to him for posting this. Like everyone here, I was really hyped for EQNext as well. I love EQ2, but as soon as my Guild Leader told me about the game and what they plan on doing with it. I later realized it will be more like playing an action rpg with a lot of housing options then an actual MMORPG. Negative or positive its all good for gamers to share their thoughts. There is way to much fanboism on this site and not enough Factual information. I ended up having too do my own research and talking to other people then listening to some of the people on this site about EQnext. MMORPG.com should be more open to constructive critisism on the games listed here. Some of the negative posts can be quite informative as well.
People get suspended and banned here on mmorpg.com for just posting negative posts as well. I don't really see how these forums are any differen't then any others. You can be banned for any reason on any forum. That is their right, just as it's mmorpg.com's right to run their forums as they see fit. If you don't like it. Don't visit the forums. I don't even hardly visit any games forums that I'm playing because most of the people are just people acting like childern complaining and trolling anyways.

Watching these so-called "devs" over the past year has been like watching a monkey trying to f*** a football.

hahahahaha, Love it. Thank you sir, you made my night.

It really continues to surprise me how much an ex employee of Blizzard could be so out of Touch with it's own Vet Player base. I think you pretty much missed one Very Very important point why most people left the game who originally had played and worked their butts off in the Vanilla and Burning Crusade. People left the game because it became dumbed down and simplistic. Too easy and Rediculasly boring because there was no challange in the game anymore. The dungeons are a joke, and the raiding became a joke to the vet players who were really good players. They didn't leave because of the gear grind. When Wrath of the Lich King came out most of the Hard Core gamers left the game. My enitre guild disbanded and 40% of the people left the game after that expansion in my server, Most of the people were all players who never even played the burning crusade or vanilla. They were all new players I remember playing with when I was raiding in Wrath of the Lich King. After that I left the game and never returned. It was a waste of my time to be playing a MMO were everyone had the same Epics I had because they were so easy to get and required next to no effort to aquire. Thats WHY they left.

I could careless about production costs. Game companys make millions and millions of dollers each year. Game developers are well paid and live well then most people do in the world. The only thing you are talking about here is money and time. If developers took more time developing their games and testing them like what Trion did with Rift there would be no problems. You said you used to work on WoW with blizzard development team, but have you seen what your company has turned that game into? It's a hunk of garbage now because the new developers have turned it into a walk-in toy store for little tweeny kids.

What needs to change is the game developers who always make MMORPG's simplistic, linear, and less indepth. So they can make everything as easy as possible because they feel the carebears and casuals are the only ones who really matter. They need to go back when MMORPG's used to be good. Like games like everquest, shadowbane, and SWG PRE NGE. Not the crap we have now.

The game is literally more of the same.

Same slow tab-targetting combat.

Same "kill X of Y" and FEDEX-type quests we've seen hundreds of times before.

Tiny zones, lots of load screens.

Dumbed-down, easy mode play at every turn.

It's pretty, but it's been done before, over, and over, and over again.

Agree i dont get what peoples see in this game that is so great ?  For me it's the same old, same old.....

Yeah well I was in closed beta and it really was nothing to shake a stick at, it's dumbed down and they made it easier to the point even a 6 year old can play it.. similar to how blizzard totally destroyed wow. It's Not really how this kid is making out how batshit amazing this game is. Older gamers like us that have been around the block a few times and have played MMORPG's longer, will not like these games. The little 20 year olds and tweeny kids seem too think these games are the second coming of jesus though and claim they are "Revolutionary" when they are not. I think Archeage is more for Adults like us. The kiddys like their Themeparks and Tweeny town games.
