I don't understand the MMO audience, on the one hand the fact that games are easier and more accesbile is lamented; we hate that they've dumbed down, but anything more challenging or commited gets cries of "WE DON'T WANT TO SPEND ALL OF OUR TIME IN-GAME". It's a strange Catch 22 situation, and one that you really have to say, this game is made for this audience, and this is made for the other, because no game is yet to reach a balance that is convincing.

That's because the mainstrean crowd don't know what they really want and that's one of the biggest hurdle MMO developers have been facing since 2004.We should blame Blizzard for that but 2012 looks like some developers seems to go back to the roots and want to make game that they want to play...I'm following  the development of games such as ArcheAge,Copernicus,GW2,The Secret World because they are the games that will make MMO evolve from the WoW template.

Hello,

I was just wondering what people think about World Mobs, such as Lich King or Deathwing being killed by 10 or 25 people.  These mobs broke the world, their the biggest and baddest thing around.  Thrall and Varian and all the rest couldn't take em, yet 10/25 people can take em down.

I remember in DAOC, in some dragon runs or epic armor runs we had almost 100 people.  We didn't ask to see their gear level or achievements, we banded together and fought the epic mobs.  Sometimes we wiped, but it was fun.  Same with relic raids or defending our relic, a call went out and people of all levels came to defend or go on raid.  It was fun, at least to me it was.

Personally, I think that world mobs should take the cooperation of the server.  Put out a call to the server, let anyone and everyone come to fight the creature that is trying to take over the world.

This goes for any MMO, not just WoW, I just used them as an example.

This is just my opinion.

Thanks.

No. Requiring 100 people are just bad design. 100 are hard to coordinate. Games have to design around players who have real lives.

If you want to fight a World Boss with 20 people ,there's nothing Epic about that.MMORPG used to be virtual worlds.Ask players who played Asheron Call how EPIC it was to fight Bael'Zharon.

And for your information there are two events in the History of MMORPG that will never be forgotten and people like you will never understand. The first one is the day the Sleeper in EQ roamed the world and destroyed everything and second the fight for the Shards of Bael Zharon in AC.

Nothing will happen after SWTOR because it's the same WOW tried formula with voice acting with lightsabers But I see a probable change after some new releases in 2012 mainly GW2 and TSW.And there's also Arche Age if it's release in the West.

I  ilke it when it upclose and personal so I gonna be dual Blade Chaos Magus.

I've changed my mind, too. Canceling my preorder. I've never thought I would say this but I liked "Rift" more than "SWTOR" in its current state.

I'm so dissapointed in this game - after two days of playing, trying various classes etc. I found that those hyped voiceovers are plain boring after a while (it was like: blablabla - blablabla - ok let's click one of the tree options - blablabla - somemoreblablabla - finally, I can get into action! What? Done so quickly? And then: blablablabla). Don't get me wrong: I love good story, good taste stylised graphics and atmosphere. But there is none of the above in SWTOR. And I was waiting for this game soooo long...

I was very impatient to test this game but after two days I have no regret that I didn't pre order it.I find the game boring, monotonous and even ugly at times.

I agree with you RIFT is a much beautiful game both background/graphics and art.

It's going to be "Nay"for me simply because of a preference type of game but SWTOR is a robust game that is middle road between MMORPG and single player RPG.Bioware nailed the SW world and sound marvelously.

The irony is that SWTOR is WoW in another package but I must recognized that it is well done and have a huge following.SWTOR will sure be one of the biggest challenger to WOW but WOW is where it is due to the lack of vision of Blizzard.2012/2013 will bring more games with innovative and evolutive functionality that Blizzard's game has been lacking/ignored.

WoW will be assailed from all sides and everyone will find something fitting his/her play style/genre. More games will be successful with a decent number of players and it's going to be a good thing for the market.

Yeah,Korean games take like one and half year to hit US/EU market but there has been rumours that NCSoft might be interested in distributing the game...but it's just a rumour.

OP,we have this in the West too, just check Rift mounts :p Anyway it's not gamebreaking or immersion breaking for me.

I've heard the controls were optimized for console controllers and aren't very good with a mouse/keyboard.  Any confirmation on that?

That's my main problem with single player game nowadays, they all suffer from consolitis and it sucks for me as a PC player.

This is what D3 should have been .This game  looks and feel more EPIC.Some of the features are really interesting. Can't wait to hear and learn more on LE.

PS>it's funny how fast Blizzard was in deleting threads talking about LE...looks like Blizz/D3 just got a big hit in its left nut :p

"Last week, the rumor mill went into full swing with what some perceived as a slip up on the part of Funcom developers in saying that The Secret World's open beta would start in December 2011."

Try... they said they would try to have open beta before Christmas but it could easily be 2012, they also said they didn't have a date to commit to. Basically people heard what they wanted to hear and got all excited over nothing.

Agreed,they never confirmed it.

Nope and besides there are more interesting MMORPG on the way and with all the security thing concering SoE,I don't feel them worthy of my trust .

April 2012 can't come soon enough .

This game looks really promising,I wish & hope they don't drop the ball.

This game sounds better and better but it's Funcom and I don't trust them because they always fucked up and pissed their player base down the road.So I'll wait like 2-3 months after launch and see how things are progressing before I buy their game.

I'm going to play both :)

I am in agreement with this post. I play these games to be part of something greater than myself and I never understood why there was so much solo content in a Massive Multiplayer Onlne Role Playing game.

If you want a good solo RPG play some good standalone games like Dragon Age II or Witcher II that has great RPG elements for a single player to enjoy.

City of Heroes/Villians offered the best multi player experience for me because the game encourgaed players to play together which is why I play an MMO in the first place.

I am also not a big fan of chat in a game, it takes away the game experience for me. I see where it is necessary for raids but not for regular gaming.

One postive note, if you are lucky enough to have joined a small guild with good people, you can have a great gaming experience in almost any game.

Vodun

You don't understand thats why.

A true MMO setting is about having thousands of thinking players in a single world; They should never be forced to do anythi9ng in the world that they do not wish to. It is about longevity and community.

So if you want to hunt solo ; explore and travel do it ; if you want to craft and trade do it ; if you want to govern parts of the world via land grab/ village/City/Capital do it. If you wish to group to face greater challenges do it.

The MMO in reality was always about numbers of players in a world not a definition on the fact you have to play together its about choice.

Enforced gameplay is a job not gameplay.

I remember games where crafting was an acheivement: That is noit the case anymore

I remember games where traveling was dangerous: Not anymore

I remember games where markets existed: Not anymore

It is just all too easy these days; The Developers have killed the Genre with easy mode ; easy win easy everything.

But there are a few shining beacons and eventually one Developer will deliver again soon; because people want a real game to play.

But MMO developers are not building worlds anymore,we are just getting  backdrops for gameplay.Rift is a perfect example.

The entire post by the OP is so ironic. There are more MMOs that are like the 'good old days' then ever before; so not exactly sure what the issue is.

Based on mechanics alone, the MMOs have not changed much.  Perhaps a bit dumbed down, but overall it's still kill for XP, group in group content, PVP in PVP content.

What has changed is the players.  They no longer see it as a virtual world where there is significance in having others in the world.  To them it has become a game with emphasis on themselves vs.  content and the other players are just scenery or antagonists to be avoided.

Soloism didn't kill the MMORPG.  Mass-appeal killed it.  In a game where players make the difference, change the average mindset of the players and you change the game.

And why should the average gamer change its mind?

More people are enjoying the 'good old days' MMOs and there are more of them.

What a lot of people don't get is that 'Mass Appeal' goes both ways, it brought in a lot of people that like the WoW gameplay but also brought in a lot of people that like the 'virtual world' type game as well.

To say otherwise is factually wrong.

Mass appeal is very often synonym to Quality going downwards, uniformity, lack of innovations, always thinking within the box.Just look at the music industry or  Hollywood.

Since the day of the MMO infamy, corporate greed has been trying and is succeeding in bringing in more video game players into the MMORPG world while saying at the same time "fuck those nerds from the 90's we have the MTV,FB,twitter generation and they are just rabid consumers, the fast food dwellers.Let's build them some quick solo actions with some loot and achievements".

So MMORPG became just MMO and now  MMO are shifting towards MOBA.Worse we are getting 3 monthers and 6 monthers games now which will turn into Freemium after some months.

Wolfshead have a nice way of saying it " We are at the mercy of Financial and Creative Hegemony"
