In other news, the nebula prototype is almost ready and i will soon move on to working on other features ( planetary engine, cities, vegetation ). A short video ( 4 seconds ) of the nebula recorded in real-time can be downloaded here. Note that nebulae are fully volumetric. I also want to remind everybody that we are still looking for active contributors ( the more the better ), especially in the modeling and texturing areas. If you have the skills, please have a look at the contributions forum. Thank you. ![]() |

Microsoft Flight Simulator doesn't allow you to walk on ground either, but strangely, nobody complains about the lack of this feature. Infinity proposes millions of planets, all different, of various types, with cities, forests, resources to mine, etc.. and one of the main complaints is that you cannot walk on ground ( for a space-based game ! ). Especially since we are a small independent team, we have to cut down features and stay realistic. Unless you prefer that we promise a lot and do not deliver ? But IMO it's much wiser to know your limits and have realistic expectations, don't you think ? Take a few seconds to think seriously about what the implementation of a FPS mode implies for us, developers: characters, hundreds of skins for the characters ( and a lot of skins, since players don't like to look alike ), character animations, tens if not hundreds of buildings interiors.. we are not Blizzard you know. Our budget isn't in the millions of dollars.. For the same reason, there are no alien races. It would require, to be interesting, to model tens of ships/stations/cities that have a completely different look than human ones. Plus, the evil alien race that declares war on humanity is awfully cliché, while we're trying to do something more mature with an interesting plot that involves more "political" events. |

Presentation of Infinity (sci-fi, space & planet based MMO)
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/28/06 1:17:03 PM
There isn't a lot of space-based MMOs out here, so it's natural to compare Infinity to Eve. Saying that they are clones is, however, extremely wrong. The word "clone" suggests that a game tries to mimic all the gameplay from another one, while Infinity is pretty much going in the opposite direction than Eve took. Actually, Infinity's gameplay might end up being closer to the defunct Earth and Beyond, than Eve. But even more accurate would be an "Elite" MMO, even though it's not a clone of Elite either. If you are really interested in learning why Infinity has nothing to do with Eve, please check this thread: http://fl-tw.com/InfinityForums/viewtopic.php?t=1175 |

Presentation of Infinity (sci-fi, space & planet based MMO)
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/28/06 8:01:32 AM
Dear all,
In the past 4 months i've been working on a combat prototype for Infinity, based on the game engine and gameplay principles. The goal of this prototype is to do some early debugging and to stress test components such as the graphics, but also the physics, networking, test different user interfaces/controls schemes, and of course to get a "taste" of what the real game will feel like. The prototype is not an alpha of the game: it is a completely standalone, fully playable game. Of course it's not as "deep" as a full game, but at least it's free. The combat prototype can be downloaded on the website on its dedicated webpage. You'll need a pretty decent config ( 2 Ghz cpu, 512 mb of ram and a pixel-shader able video card ) to get a comfortable 30 fps+. A trailer contest has been organized a few weeks ago, and you can see the winning entry on Google Videos ( low quality ). More screenshots / videos can be seen on the media page. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The final version (1.0) of the combat prototype has finally been
released. The combat prototype is not an "alpha" of the game, but a
completely independent game used to test the engine and some systems
like networking, physics, controls, etc.. and to keep players busy for
a little while.
The combat prototype is publically available and can be downloaded on its dedicated webpage. Special thanks to all the other developers and contributors without whom this combat prototype would have never come to life. Screenshots of the prototype have been uploaded onto the Media page. A trailer contest has been organized on the forums last week, and the winner is Kaboom22. Also worth of mentionning is Mcclane who didn't make first, but well deserved his second place. Those trailers can be seen on the videos page. For people who prefer direct links, the low quality version of Kaboom22's can be seen on Google Videos. This version of the prototype now supports wide-screen, as can be seen on this photo. Kaboom22 (him, again!) has a nice config :) I'm jealous. The combat prototype is now considered done and will not be expanded (except for minor bug fixing). The next step is now to finish the Infinity engine (I-Novae) by implementing vegetation, cities, volumetric clouds, and of course to develop the gameplay. |

Denying VWORLD Terrain info again
Ganarethian Hideaway (General) « Dark and Light 6/26/06 6:11:40 AM
Pix, you have all my support. Back in 2001, i had an interview with you in Lyon, and what you showed me at that time was certainly impressive. It's a real shame that the situation evolved the way it happened. As a programmer, it's pretty clear to me that the D&L team, lacking the research phase you made and experience you had, could have never replaced the terrain engine by their own version in a couple months only. Plus, even if only a few hundred of lines of code from your original work are remaining, it is enough to be considered a derivative work, meaning that they owe you credits.. and more. How's the legal situation progressing ?
