A reminder for everyone.

The nominations are based 100% on YOUR voting.

We've learned a lesson though. Last year we did nominations and everyone attacked us demanding open categories. This year we did open categories and everyone attacked us demanding nominations. Next year, we'll try a combination of the two

I realize it's tough to see two games dominate, especially if you don't play either. The fact was though they were the only two games to get statistically significant votes in most of the categories. I could have nominated other games for show, but when you put two games that had votes in the 30s and 40s vs a bunch of games that had less than 5% of the vote, we're just perpetuating a charade.

I had hoped people would vote for the category and not for the game, but sadly it didn't turn out that way and there is nothing to be done but see the thing through.

Looks like voters weren't voting with objectivity like they should have on some of those. Readers choice rewards suck, because the readers can't be trusted to give an unbiased vote. This was more like a popularity contest than anything else.

I mean common? EvE for best PvE? We all know EvE is a great game and has excellent PvP, but PvE? Popularity contest for sure. I hope others join me and stop voting for these stupid things, because we already have a popularity contest on the front page. MMORPG.COM staff needs to start acting like the adults and take control of these contests and vote for the MMORPG community in the world with objectivity.

We do Editorial Awards too, you know ;)

These are easy to do and fun for the community. They are a popularity contest, of course, but that's sort of the point.

Okay..

Well, when do those come out and will they be more publicized on this site than these community rigged awards?

Here are last years: http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/368/2005MMORPGcomEditorial2005MMORPGcomEditorialAwards.html

They'll likely come out around Christmas. We moved the Reader's Choice up this year so as not to confuse the two (they came out roughly at the same time last year).

...and that is why we left the preliminary voting open to all games. The none of the above is a one time thing that you guys basically voted in by voting in lower numbers in that particular category (as compared to others). All six other categories had roughly the same number of votes cast, while that one had about 30% less votes. That to me was enough to make me think people wanted a none of the above.

My problem with it is that those people don't represent the MMORPG community as a whole, they came here to vote for EVEN and most of them will turn around and leave.

I won't even get into the game itself. That has been done to death.

Well, on the cynical side, we don't run the site for charity and anything that expands our community is good. So we want people to link the awards. EVE did link, but I should point out that the awards have been up for an hour and there are links on PotBS and Warhammer already. Anyone can link who wants to ;)

Which is exactly why we did nominations last year ;) Some people just pick "their game" over and over. It's not just EVE, a lot of games got some odd vote totals (although few broke 10% like EVE did).

maybe im blind, but i didnt see that option, so I guess i cant vote since i would vote in only one or two of the seven categories.

It's only an option in "Best of 2006".

Because a significant percentage of you guys voted for it in the first round and it's on our game list.

Ok I'd like to be the first to say that your desicion to use open voting then only take the game that got 10% for finals voting made this the lamest Reader's Choice awards I've ever seen. Sure people complained last time that you bascially told them who they could vote for but you made it a hundred time worse.

You might as well call it the EVE vs WoW awards...you seriously need to re think this entire process if this is the result.

Obviously, the way things worked out was not ideal, but ultimately, this is the Reader's Choice Awards. We cannot stop them from voting for EVE and WOW.

Next year, I suspect we'll revisit the format again.

We did an open nomination process this year and took any game that got over 10% of the vote in its category in the finals. The results were rather focused, with EVE and World of Warcraft being up for most every award. Check out the finalists and cast your votes.

Here are our seven categories:

  • Favorite Graphics: Won last year by EVE Online, this category was open to all games on the market, but only two survived the first round of voting.
  • Favorite PvE: World of Warcraft was selected by our readers last year as their Favorite PvE Experience. Do they have what it takes to retain the crown? This category, again, was open to all games in commercial service, but again, only two made it to the finals.
  • Favorite PvP: EVE Online was your favorite PvP experience last year. Did a year change anything? Once again, two made it to the last round..
  • Favorite Story: The Saga of Ryzom pulled off an upset victory last year. Now, with the Ryzom Ring can they retain their crown as the favorite world/role-playing/backstory of any released MMORPG on our list? Three games challenge.
  • Most Anticipated: Open to all games that have yet to launch, last year's winner Dungeons and Dragons Online has hit the market. Who will take home the crown this year? An amazing six games will duke it out.
  • Favorite New Game: This category is from a list of games that launched to commercial service in 2006 and is the only new category in this year's awards. Who, if anyone, deserves the crown?
  • Favorite Game: Finally, from among those games on the market, what is your favorite MMORPG? Last year, the voters said EVE. Will it be them or a challenger with the trophy?

Cryptic Studios head Jack Emmert is a unique character in the gaming industry. He comes from an academic background and makes comic book games. Today, we begin a periodic feature where we hope the fans can learn more about Emmert, his studio and his projects. Read the first Q&A below, then check out the comment thread to suggest questions for future weeks.

MMORPG.com: Without feeling the need to pimp a Marvel character, who was your favorite superhero (or villain) growing up and what about them captured your imagination?

Jack Emmert: Namor. Bottom line.

First, I love the fact that his roots stretch back to the Golden Age (40's) and the dawn of the comic book medium. While Superman and Batman were strutting their stuff, Marvel had creations like the Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch and Captain America.

Second, I'm intrigued by his background. On the one hand, he commands one of the world's superpowers, but on the other, he's always trying to strike a careful balance with the surface world. His strength is so legendary that he can battle the Hulk or Thor, but that strength doesn't translate into diplomatic skills.

Associate Producer Tasos Flambouras answers our questions in this new Q&A about his hardcore PvP MMORPG.

MMORPG.com: Give us a look at the tactics players can use in PvP or in PvE. It is said that the game is more influenced by the player behind the keyboard than the character you have. Is this true?

Tasos Flambouras: Darkfall combat is through aimed attacks. The players control their character's movement like they do in most FPS games. So in Darkfall you have the type of control you have in a shooter, but you also have character skills, spells, a backpack full of equipment, mounts, ships, siege weapons and all these come into play when the character is in combat. It's not easy to say that player skill is more important than character development. The player behind the keyboard certainly is very important; a lot more than in other MMOs, but what's more important is a good balance between good character development, knowledge of the game and your character, equipment, teamwork, and individual skill.

One of Darkfall's more impressive gameplay features allows players to use group tactics because of collision detection allowing formations, friendly fire making them necessary, and area of effect spells which truly affect the area and not just some characters within it. Force concentration makes good teamwork important. Most real-world medieval combat tactics could probably be adapted for use within Darkfall and we expect to see unique group tactics emerge.

Staff Writer Steve Wilson injects some new blood and gives you a new column entitled "Casual Play". In his first week, he asks simply "What Defines a Casual Player?"

The reaction I get is always the same, I can't be one, after all I'm too invested too be a casual gamer. Its true, I visit websites about games, talk about meta gaming, discuss game mechanics, write about games, and play games more than I probably should, yet I still consider myself a casual gamer. So why do I, and other casual hardcore players, define our play style as casual?

You can read the full column here.

Lead Designer Matt Miller talks about crafting the Veteran Rewards program from a developer's perspective. This program is part of Issue 8: To Serve and Protect, which hit the live servers today.

Coming up with the Veteran Rewards was one of the coolest things I've done as Lead Designer on the "City of" games so far. It was really a challenge to come up with cool rewards that players have been asking for while at the same time making sure that nothing became the "end-all-be-all" reward that every character MUST have. In addition, I wanted to throw in some cool rewards that players hadn't asked for, but that I knew would be useful for them and make the veteran players' lives a little easier.

I first scoured the boards for suggestions for costume pieces. Trenchcoats were always something that players desired, and we had put them on NPC characters in Issue 7, so getting them into the hands of the players was inevitable. I decided to make this the initial reward, earned at three months, simply because it is probably the most requested costume piece, and it is a nice gift we can give "new" players for a simple three month time investment.

I implied what I thought here, but should have come out and said it.

My point is that graphics have reached a point where you need to be a major player in the game industry to complete. Indy developers are frozen out and traditionally, it is smaller game companies with big ideas that push innovation.

They're ruining games. Senior Editor Dana Massey looks at one specific example within the MMORPG.com office and says why he thinks people should be less superficial.

Graphics whores are killing innovation in gaming. A bold statement, but one I believe.

These same people who give new games a one because their graphics are not up to snuff, often sit around and complain that no one innovates. They attack companies like Blizzard and SOE for putting out games they've already played. Then, they turn around and give random indy MMO X a one rating because the visuals are not up as good as EQII!

Laura Genender looks at Veteran Rewards in anticipating of tomorrow's big expansion. Issue #8: To Serve and Protect is a largely City of Heroes focused expansion. When we last spoke to Cryptic at AGC, they told us that from here on out players can expect the expansion to be equally focused across both sides.

Introduced with the "Issue 8: To Protect and Serve" expansion to City of Heroes and City of Villains, Cryptic Studios will be implementing a Veteran Award system that rewards players based on how long they've had an activated account for the duo of games. These rewards range from costume pieces to special powers to extra base items, including a lot of novelty items that City of Heroes and Villains fans have been anticipating since the opening of the game.

That's right, we're talking wings.
