The Managing Director of Duplex Systems drops in to answer questions from Staff Writer Garrett Fuller about his sci-fi MMP that launched in March '06.

MMORPG.com: Player crafting is always very important for MMO players. How has crafting grown in the game and what areas can players expect improvement?

Marko Dieckmann: The economic cycle has always been one of the most innovative features in Face of Mankind. Everything in the game has to be produced by the players. This creates very dynamic markets and gives a lot of power to the players. We only control the basic prices for raw materials along with basic mining and production costs. The rest is controlled by the Dominion citizens. Each faction can define tax rates on the colonies they own. The economic cycle is closed, which means all money that is spent will go somewhere else and won't be lost.

A few months ago we introduced the new real-time mining and production system and we've balanced it a lot since then. The only thing we still need to introduce to complete a believable economic cycle is item decay. Item decay means that items that cannot be destroyed, used or emptied (such as weapons, implants, clothes etc.) will age and at one point become unusable. This feature is on our to-do-list.

Rivai Adidharma and Eugene Koh of the Pirate King Online team get together to answer our questions about their MMG.

MMORPG.com: PvP seems to be possible in Pirate King Online, so my question regarding this is: "Is there any benefit one has from entering PvP, beside the warm fuzzy feeling you get for grinding the face of your enemies to dust?"

PKO Team: At the moment, the PvP features have not been fully released. We do currently have the arena open where players can challenge each other to earn honour points for bragging rights. There is also a guild vs guild feature that we intend to test out soon in this closed beta.

Earlier on I mentioned about high level dungeons being accessable through random whirlpools in the game. These areas are Free For All meaning you can PK anyone who steps into the place. We are expecting a lot of clashes and rivalry between players and guilds for this highly contested territory purely for the item drops and rewards that are available in these areas.

Dan Fotier debuts his new column on MMORPG with "Lessons Not Learned". In this first edition of his weekly articles, he looks at Dark and Light. Check back every Monday for a new edition of MMOWTF.

So there I was sitting at my PC, staring at the screen wondering how to start off my new weekly column. It should be something appropriate and it seemed like I should start things off with a bang. In the midst of this pondering this, my trusty Yahoo Instant Messenger cheerfully advised me that I had a new e-mail and thus this rant was born.

In my inbox was mail from my friends over at NP Cube, makers of Dark and Light. The introduction line reads:

"The Ganareth Tour will give newcomers to the world of Ganareth a taste of many of the world's most addictive elements. It can be downloaded at no cost."

The Lead Designer of Age of Conan talks about his job, how he got there and the progress of his anticipated MMOG project. Developer profiles are a weekly feature every Thursday on MMORPG.com. This is a special Saturday edition of the profiles.

MMORPG.com: Can you remember your first video game? How often did you play, what other games had an influence on you?

Ole Herbjørnsen: As I mentioned above I started playing video games back in 1985 on the C64. I played lots of different games and off the top of my head I can remember: Bozo the Clown, Blue Max, Defender of the Crown, Wiz Ball, Hunt the Bismarck and Carrier Command.

Back in those days I would typically play 4-5 hours per day. A friend of mine had a C128 with a floppy disc, and we would play lots of different games either head-to-head or in coop (like Wiz Ball). Since the graphics back then were pretty primitive (and took a turn for the worse when I transitioned to the 80086 IBM XT with CGA-graphics!), I prefer deep and involving gameplay over fancy graphics. My favorite genres are probably strategy, role-playing games and simulator games.

WHAT?!? outdated graphics? are they TRYING to turn ppl off DAOC? the graphics in DAOC imo are the best out there for mmorpgs...if not the best they are damn close, they are really good if u just look at them and not make things up...that made me mad its pure BS

You misunderstood the comment. I was talking about UO. DAoC's graphics are good considering it's age. Obviously, some of the latest games are still going to be prettier, but I don't think anyone will quit DAoC for graphical reasons anytime soon. On the other hand, many people (myself included) quit playing UO because they no longer wanted to play an iso-2Dish game. That was what I was trying to illustrate.

Isn’t this just an expansion?

Three entries actually ;)

Each edition of Guild Wars costs full retail price and does not require the other ones to play. Thus, they technically qualify as their own game.

Likely, once we get the expansion lists up and running we'll consolidate these under one entry. Unfortunately, at this time, there is no other way to do it.

Every year, it is our goal to take a look at the major MMORPGs. Today, we take a peek at one that slipped through the cracks when it first launched. Final Fantasy XI is now available on the PS2, XBOX360 and PC. This review is for the PC version, although all three do exist in one world.

One of the more interesting aspects of FFXI is that there is a dark, complex storyline supporting the mainframe of the game. The opening movie will show you the background concerning the war between the Beastmen and the Alliance of mankind. Before one can even begin to immerse oneself in the world of FFXI, players will pledge their Allegiance to one of three nations; Bastok, San'Doria, or Windurst. Each nation has its own separate storyline, yet all three will guide players to uncovering the secret evil that lies in the shadows in the world of Vana'Diel. Players advance through the storyline by completing missions issued by their home nation. By advancing their "Rank", players will be rewarded with more storyline details, access to new areas to explore, and even exclusive pieces of gear. There are other hidden privileges as well to gaining rank... such as the ability to travel between cities on the infamous airships!

On top of the original storyline, the numerous expansion packs have added in-depth sub-plots into the game. The "Rise of the Zilart", the "Chains of Promathia", and the "Treasures of Aht-Urghan" all present new challenges, storylines, and rewards to the players who dare to complete them. The storyline is one of the finest qualities about FFXI, as it provides even the highest level players with something to do after they've hit the level cap.

The Producer of Flyff (Fly For Fun), a Korean MMOG recently brought to the West by GalaNet, provides us with an update on the game's progress.

MMORPG.com: Considering there are a lot of pay to play games on the market, what gave you the idea of your system?

Yoon Im: The free to play system has been very popular in Asia, and we anticipated a similar reaction from the Western market. We also believe that a user should have the right to preview and play the game before investing any of their hard-earned money. Yes, there are plenty of games that offer free trials, but many of these gimmicks still require you to submit payment information up front. And what happens when you accidentally forget to cancel the 'free preview'? Whammo - got yo money, foo! You will never see anything to the likes of this in Flyff. Not only is the game free to play, we allow our dedicated users to enhance the quality of their gaming experience through the purchase of premium pay items. These items not only provide the user with a great variety of options to raise the overall fun-factor, but it also helps support the Flyff team. It's like donating to a website that you thoroughly enjoy perusing - same exact concept. Still, in the end no one is ever required to pay a single dime to play the game. In doing this, I think Flyff will appeal to a broader demographic and will help us increase and strengthen our community.

Howard Marans is an Associate Producer on Dark Age of Camelot at EA Mythic. In this edition of our weekly developer profiles, he gives us some insights into what it is to be a producer and how he got there.

MMORPG.com: Take us through a typical day of work at Mythic, what is it like when you show up at the office?

Howard Marans: My job mainly focuses around the integration of the art and content for Camelot. The artists and world builders will give me their work, and I will get it integrated into the game clients. Sometimes, it's a bit slow, but other times the stuff comes in so quickly you never get a second to catch your breath.

I'm also in charge of making sure all the correct files are ready for the patches and are going to the correct clients.

In San Diego, Vanguard hosted the press. Jon Wood reports back on what the two MMO titans Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler of Sigil had to say about SOE, diplomacy, travel and more.

As many people will tell you, in order for a game to be successful in a crowded MMORPG fantasy market, it has to have some kind of hook, something new and exciting, to get players interested and to keep their interest. Vanguard seems to take this into account with their new Diplomacy system, which joins Adventuring and Crafting as areas for advancement. Diplomacy is meant to give the cities more meaning.

"No matter how great an adventurer you are," it was explained to us, "you can't just force your way in to see the king, you need to look the part, you need to have the diplomacy abilities."

This means that diplomacy will provide avenues for gameplay that adventuring can not provide.

Neil Thompson looks at what happens when games encourage everyone to seek the same items at each step of the way.

Over the last couple of years I have noticed a trend in most online games. EverQuest 2, World of Warcraft, Dungeons and Dragons Online to name but a few, all have the same problem: the player characters all look the same.

I'm not talking about their faces (though the differences here are mostly negligible too). I am talking about the way they dress. It seems to me that everyone is shopping at the same tailor/blacksmith. Take a tour around any game and you will notice that players of similar levels are usually dressed identically.

The Community Manager for Neocron 2 took the time to answer our questions in this new MMORPG.com Interview. This is a re-publish of yesterday's top story that was lost in a database error yesterday afternoon.

MMORPG.com: In July you ran the Masters of the Universe Event. How did that work out for players and developers?

Christian Schuett: Our players often have asked for explicit PvP events where they can pit themselves with other players. The content team has seized this chance to host the “Masters of the Universe” event, a tournament where players could fight against others within a special ingame arena and with a sudden death rule set. While in the first rounds, players fought versus players, the final round was the biggest challenge. The five remaining players had to step up against a Neocron Gamemaster of their choice and showed them that good gear isn't the only factor that counts in a heated battle. In the end most of the remaining players taught our Gamemasters a lesson in Player vs. Player combat and carried off the victory. Prizes for the winning players were rare items such as a special Wisdom of Ceres body armor.

Overall we are very satisfied with this event and we have received lots of positive feedback from the community too. This is motivating us to host more of these events in the future.

When EA bought Mythic, it gave them experts to run their MMORPGs. While Mythic may have a potential hit on their hands with Warhammer Online, it is impossible to believe that everyone involved is just going to sit around and wait for it to launch. Thus, the question becomes, what else could EA Mythic be working on? With the Electronic Arts catalogue of IPs and the muscle they provide, we look at some of the likely candidates.

This is a speculative editorial about what makes the most sense to us and not necessarily what EA or EA Mythic have planned.

To date, it seems like EA may have understood their mistakes. They've set the newly dubbed EA Mythic up as the head of their MMO operations. Both their surviving MMOGs, along with the current and upcoming Mythic games report through a single structure overseen by people who have had great success in this industry. The earliest indications seem to show that perhaps Electronic Arts has learned a lesson.

EA is not, however, a small company with finite ambitions. It is only logical to assume that while Warhammer Online may look like it has the makings of being a big hit, they are not going to rest all their MMO hopes on one potential star and two aging veterans. One has to ask then, what else might they be working on?

We did a lot of digging and are now convinced that Thrones of Chaos deserves to be judged on its own merits. This game, built off the title once known as Mourning, is being developed by Lound Ant Software in Portland, OR. We interviewed CEO Colton Burgess and others to cut through all the drama and confusion of this chequered game.

After extensive interviews and research, MMORPG.com is pleased to add Thrones of Chaos to our game list. This title, being built off the game once known as Mourning, is being developed by Portland, OR based Loud Ant Software LLC and promises a hardcore PvP experience in a fantasy setting.

The original Mourning project had been delisted by MMORPG.com in a famous incident involving developer abuse of our staff, among other things. Later, they attempted to launch the game in an almost unplayable state after a pre-order debacle. Since then, the game was sold, but due to confusion involving a partner company called Nuanced Entertainment, we once again removed the game from our list until we could confirm that it was indeed in fresh hands and a legitimate title.

Before returning it to the list, we spoke to Loud Ant CEO Colton Burgress, the CEO of Nuanced Entertainment Adam McCall and the original Producer of Mourning Andrei Gireada. The game's original owner refused to be interviewed for this piece. The three men clarified their roles, some of the history and confirmed that the project had indeed completely changed hands.
