MY personal entertainment right now is the twits from games like wow who are so used to their character constantly mindlessly swining a sword and they say FFXIV looks slow and boring.

What they're msising, is FF games are generally slower paced because they include something most other MMO's wow included lack.  TACTICS.

FF games make you THINK about what you do next, not just mindlessly spam a rotation and move out of whatever is on the ground.

I dont care what anyone says I've played both and FFXI was by far harder to play than WoW will ever be (mostly because wow continuously dumbs their game down claiming it's too complicated when a five year old could play it with much success) knowing what to do and how to do it both with your character and in a group was pivotal in FFXI in it's hay day.  And it's for this very reason along with the "slow and boring" combat that I'm glad these twits see it as such.  It means they won't be making the journey over to FFXIV and filling it with the same retardation they've filled WoW with for all these years.

For those who say it's "slow and boring" I just laugh, wave and say good stay right where you are then!

Whatever helps you sleep at night buddy. Combat doesn't have to be 'slow and boring' in order to have tactics. I'm not a WoW player, never have been, but even compared to old school games like AC and EQ that combat looks as dull as watching paint dry. Seriously, standing there waiting for the cool down on your basic slash attack? What kind of time does that add up to for one stinking kill?

The game 'looks' fantastic, don't get me wrong, but the combat looks like they are trying to make the game feel turned based and that style of combat is what most of the new games coming out are trying to get away from. It just doesn't look like fun, it looks like a grind. Realistically, how many of those 'quick slashes' could a normal person perform in the time it takes for the character in the video to do two? I know I could pull off at least 5 and I'm no martial artist. Just a lot of standing in place waiting for cooldowns... No, sorry, that doesn't add up to tactics in my book, it's just a way of making combat into a time sink.

If you think people will go for the story and play the game the way it is intended, you are wrong.

This same vision permeated in the WAR Beta. All the Keep Sieges and ORVR was fun because people participated. When the game released, a vast majority of players sped through the PvE content, skipping T1-T3 ORVR completely. The path of least resistance and greatest reward will be the path taken by the majority of players. I don't care if you're the biggest RP'er and Bioware fanboy, your rose glasses won't change the shade of that.

Why are people even trying to defend that the game offers all these revolutionary ideas (besides trying to make the most immersive story) when the developers themselves often are quoted to be saying that many of the features are "just like WoW"?

Not all of us play MMOs like they are some kind of competition to get to max level. Nor do all of us want to take the 'path of least resistance'.

Now, I am not claiming to speak for a majority of people, but you seem to want to speak for everyone so I thought I'd patiently thank you for not speaking on my behalf.

'Rose colored glasses', LOL, so then yours are a browner shade?

Basically summing up what I'm currently thinking about this game.  Its a comicstyled Star Wars with voice over and story thats about it. Can't believe people are too stupid to read the OP DID listen to some of the dialogues  but decided to skip them at stome point because...you know...after all it was a limited demo!
I mean seriously  does a Sith need a guy telling him that he's evil and so are his actions? Knowing you are a Sith = you are an evil badass = doing very bad things.
Fully voice over story is cool for sure but mark my words the endgame will be the longtime deciding factor so if Bioware can't deliver there they won't be able keeping 1000k subs or what so ever.

To quote a new mantra from a writer at Massively.com - Endgame begins at level 1.

Lmao
game 1 - max lvl
endgame max lvl +

Obviously you don't get it. Sad.

But it's gotta make ya chuckle though.   lol

Wow, I never knew I would get such a response....

Let me explain some reasoning here:

1. We only had a few minutes of hands on at E3 because other groups of press were coming through the play area. Therefore, with the few minutes I had, I went right into game play instead of taking that time to listen to dialogue. At home, I would have played out the full story. So ask yourself, if you only had a short time on the game, would you rather listen to dialogue? or try the class in game play?

2. In skipping the dialogue (again due to limited time), I came ot the question of....gee, will players skip the dialogue eventually when there is so much of it? Hmmm....maybe...could this become a problem in the game...maybe....therefore I presented the question in the article.

3. The demo that Bioware chose for the Sith Warrior at E3, regardless of the videos that they released (which are CONSTRUCTED by Bioware to look awesome BTW) the demo fell short. Big Time.

Amazing that everyone who posts here calls for honest reviews...and yet when we write something that they don't like to hear about their favorite MMO they have been dreaming about...they get upset.

I'll say it again, Old Republic is a strong solid game from what we have seen. Yet I refuse to get caught up in the hype. This demo fell short for me personally, when you play the game, feel free to make your own judgement.

It's okay man, don't let it hurt your journalistic pride. I imagine it must be hard to write a review on such little experience and I'm thankful that you did what you could. I just didn't hear things I wanted to hear, which is true with many of the posters, and you're the unfortunate 'bearer of... (well not bad, but somewhat disappointing) news'.

I played almost every type of character and mix of characters (yeah, you could mix skills in that game).  I also played in space A LOT, and rolled a couple Jedis.

Furthermore, I could take your examples and substitute items from any other IP or lore.  Tie Fighter = Dude on a flying mount? Lightsaber = sword? At the end of the day, they are all props designed to put you in a certain setting, so you removing my star wars references from my post did nothing at all to make a point.

My point was quite clear.  Just because we don't want story force fed to us by the game, doesn't mean we are shallow gamers who should "go plan an FPS game", and it doesn't mean this game "isn't for us".  We who have an imagination to work with would like to forge our own adventure within the confines of the lore.

Then my point is that you cannot call a chicken an eagle.

There is nothing wrong with either game type, more sandbox or theme park, it's all about choice.

Trying to make something it is not is both illogical and foolish.

Can we hope/wish it were something else? Something more?

Of course, that's just basic human nature.

But you have to come to a point where you accept the reality of things and deal with it. Not waste all your time pining for something that is simply not there.

I know exactly what SWTOR is.  I think it's many of the fanboys around here who are making this game something it is not. Listening to everyone parot Boiware marketing bullet points about how awesome the story system is, and how much more fun the game will be seems a bit delusional.  At the end of the day it will be a basic theme park, star wars skin, and a dialog system that is more likely to become tedious after a short time than not.

I enjoy Bioware's patented dialog system, and I have no doubt that their story will indeed be awesome. The other crap about other people in my game and crafting and stuff to do after the story is over, it's not important to me at all.

We're all looking for something different.

You ain't the boss of what I'm going to enjoy, you ain't even the boss of whether or not I pull out my penis and wave it at the screen while I'm posting in this very thread, so why should I listen to you?

Your immature, and not even remotely funny post aside; it was my opinion.  You are more than welcome to your own.

Oh wow, and ya know... I still don't care.

Usually I am 100% behind the writers at this site, but that did seem to have a pretty strong anti-ToR bias.

Damn it, let me live my delusion that it's going to be the 'Greatest Game EVER' at least until I've bought it!

no, seriously, stop saying bad things about my last hope for MMO gaming...

I mean it...

Aceron's Call? ? ? ?

Really!?

... and I am supposed to read further than this?

Blasphemer!

Bleach.

What??? Yeah well screw you too! I like the show.

It'd be cool to work your way up through the ranks in the 13 court guard squads/ or work your way up the arrancar ladder to Espada.

Especially if you were able to henshin into Banki or Resurreccion form. Design your own zanpaktu...

Learn Kido, train against your friends in arena combat, fully destructible environment, faction based PvP...

This game could be the shit, but it'd end up being a crappy grindfest so forget I said anything.

EDIT: I forgot to mention hunting down hollows as PvE on both sides.

Steam is amazing, auto-updates and no dvd's to break or loose + after a reinstall just login and install what you like and they have some amazing specials.

Im going to go one step further and say that steam and services like it are the future of PC gaming, as consoles push our games off store shelves developers need a place to sell there wares, and steam delivers. Also a gr8 platform if your a small indy developer and need a place to introduce your game.

PC Gaming needs to evolve, and steam is a step in the right direction, most stores put PC games at the back with little to no shelf space, catering to the console masses instead and tbh thats fine, they need to make money but we need games too and where the stores have failed us, steam steps up.

Its not  perfect, you need a broadband connection thats always on, and a decently fast one doesn't hurt, but you have to take the bad with the good, Im on a 50mbit line so its fantastic, never buy a boxed game anymore unless its not available on steam or D2D.

I have bought games from Direct 2 Drive but I don't have to log in to there service every time I want to play the game, it makes me wonder what tracking stats Steam is collecting? Time played, type of games you like, how many games a year you play and buy? And if I want to play an off line game can I play it or do I have to ask Steam for permission first ?

Information like that is a hot commodity. I imagine they can make some good money selling that info to other software development companies. Saves them from having to do expensive surveys. Plus they've got your name, phone number, address, email... I know my inbox is spamorama, so they must be selling info to somebody.

Oh! Who's the big pedophile under the sea? SpongeBobNoPants!

Perverted and weird and scary is he! SpongeBobNoPants! If you have a child and don't want him met.

SpongeBobNoPants! Then don't let your kid go alone on the net!

SpongeBobNoPants, SpongeBobNoPants, SpongeBobNoPants!

Seriously, this and Hello Kitty Online must be crawling with Date Line rejects.

Swtor seem to be the most hated MMO right now. BW released very little info and people still find some way to hate it.

Honestly, TOR is not the most hated. The truth is, It's nothing more than a select few that  troll every game forum with opinions they try and push off as actual facts about the game in question. They disregard the truths that the developers release and twist them into nothing more than hate to try and discourage others from being interested in the game for they think it will somehow ruin the game they are playing.

You would think that if they were having so much fun playing whatever game, they wouldn't be cruising these forums bitching and moaning everyday like they do. I personally have played many games, some i liked and some i didn't. Take EVE for example. I played it, it wasn't for me, so i quit and moved on. I didn't go to their forums on this site and start bad mouthing the game because it turned out i didn't like it.

I honestly can't understand, when did people start to think that  MMORPG's were supposed to be made for everyone to like them. I mean, everyone has differant tastes, likes and dislikes. Why does some think that TOR or any game is being made especially for them alone and not being made for a much broader audience.

The old saying goes, when you're the one riding the tallest in the saddle you are the first target for the arrows. Well, TOR has been the tallest target for awhile now, so it's only human nature to try and tear it down. I have a funny feeling though, that now GW2 is riding high, it won't be long before the naysayers and doombringers turn their attention on it.

GW2 aint gonna be hated. The reason is simple : they actually DO things right and they aint looking at the MMO genre with the WoW $$$ maniacal look in their eyes.

They want their game to be the best. Not the best selling product...

Dude get out of your house, there's a gas leak! I mean there must be in order for you to be that delirious... You aren't on the dope are ya son?

Yeah, NCSoft is full of integrity, and Arena Net just wants to make kids happy... They're really the saints of the gaming industry you know. Heck I bet they give all of their profits to the Michael J Fox foundation...

Yeah, cuz everyone in a fantasy setting has 3 foot high shoulder pads and huge glowing weapons...

In WoW, they do.

Probably one of the reasons I never liked that game. I hear what you are saying though, "If everyone is a hero, then who needs heroes?" Well the answer to that, and I think one of the major draws of this game to me, is that not everyone is a hero, there are a great deal of villains too. In DCUO you'll be competeing with other players for some, or most, of your PvE quests. I like this idea as it makes quests feel more dynamic and makes questing seem less like a grind.

I haven't been impressed by their animations though. Everyone seems to pull off moves like they've got a stick up their butt and marionette strings jerking them around.

I'm hoping this game will be good because I really like games that focus on customization, I like to stand out in a crowd, and I like the idea of good guys and bad guys fighting it out over the same goal, but I'm not holding my breath on it. It is $OE after all.

Pretty.  But the same question I have for anything marketing itself in the genre; is this a mmorpg?  The video plays and sounds like a re-skinned Champions Online.

Looks like a single-player action-arcade game, as the video eludes to, and appears to be heavily instanced with limted community massively-multiplayer game-play.  Similar turn-offs for Champions Online, but not having played DC, I'm not sure.

Remember that this is a hero mmo. In sword and magic, you expect an important part of the population to be in the players, and gathered close. I think for many people would be a turn off having hundred heroes roaming the streets, feeling less unique. I am not saying too much instanced but definitely not like wow.

I actually agree wtih this. In S&S MMOs, we are the regular citizens - mainly because we don't go around in brightly coloured underwear.

Heroes aren't special, if everyone in the city is a superhero.

Yeah, cuz everyone in a fantasy setting has 3 foot high shoulder pads and huge glowing weapons...

I think the DDO model is a pretty good one, though whether I'd call it F2P or not is another question. It's more of a Pay as You Go set up. I tried LoTRO's trial a couple times and I thought the game was ok, but I wasn't impressed enough to buy it. If it's free and I have more time to play the game I might find that it grows on me and feel more apt to invest in opening up the parts I'd have to pay for.

PvP in an MMO is always a bad idea.

This is sarcastic right.

If it isnt, there is one simple fact.

Game AI can not even come close the complexity of calculation of the human brain.

lol... It's not sarcastic, it's more of a goad. Not quite a troll.

You see, I've been reading threads for every game that is due to come out in the next couple years and everyone is making a whole lot of speculations, and giving speeches about how this or that game is going to fail because it's not specifically geared to cater to them. My statement about PvP isn't my personal opinion, but it is representative of an opinion someone might, reasonably, have. Everyone seems to think that, if a game doesn't have one thing that they personally feel it should, it will fail, but I say that a game is more apt to be successful if it doesn't limit itself to pleasing a single group of people, and sometimes things have to be sacrificed for the greater of the whole.

Make of it what you will.

No, it wasn't.

It absolutly wasn't.  It was widely believed that the game was doing quite well, and most of my guildies have been noticing a very healthy population.  Very few people that actually PLAYED the game with any regularity thought the game was dying.  Of course, with this horrid decision to kill the game, it will die.  What a waste.

So, let me get this right, you object to having the option to play for free? Or do you object to having more people come into the game, because you feel it will ruin the community?
