Yeah, it couldn't possibly be that LOTRO has a lot of dedicated players and a strong community who are happy to vote for it, with forum support and people posting in game to vote? Or that it's actually a good game?

Anything is possible but then again....

In the past year ESO had 6,426,661 unique hits in this site, the second most was Wildstar around 3 Mil and on down to Neverwinter @ #10 with just over 1 Mil... LOTRO is somewhere below that because they only publish the top 10. And those are just hits... positive, negative or indifferent.

So yeah, whether you like LOTRO or not, this is an ESO yay or nay vote.

LOTRO in its first year would have had many more hits as well. It's an old game that's had very little news in the past year. Hits on here mean nothing about how good a game is or its player base.

i agree it doesnt give evidence of a games quality. but it does give an indication of popularity.

you have to admit there is something else going on when u look at the difference between ESO at 1. and WS at 2.

it seems good and bad press = popularity.

Or that drama = popularity. People stop to look at car wrecks. If two people get into a fight in the middle of the street a crowd gathers to watch. Cops come and arrest someone in public, suddenly everyone wants to see. Doesn't make any of the people involved better liked.

Look, honestly most people on here are like me, they register, create an account, new or another,  and vote for the game they want to win.

What I did differently was make other new accounts (like others have as well).  Most of the people in my guild did as well.  We all voted for ESO.  Most of them created accounts and have never posted on here.  A few have.  With our numbers, I guarantee  we are making a difference.

I'd bet most don't really care who wins...

Quick question though, if that is indeed what you're doing.. Under what motivation? For ESO to win or screw the poll? IF it's for ESO to win why come and announce it? Doesn't make sense, if the motivation is for your game to win, you've given ample reason for a do over... Again doesn't make sense. Unless of course like I said you're trolling the poll.

There's also a third option you're not really an ESO fan at all and are instead concerned about it being ahead. Either way  none of it makes sense.

Pretty sure it's a combination of the two. He's looking to discredit the game by making it look like it couldn't win without cheating. It would be interesting to see where his vote actually lay. :P

I was also under the impression this site cracked down pretty hard on multi-accounters, yet he's still posting. Either way, I'm pretty sure he's violating the terms of the site.

Majgic8ball's first post in which he claimed that he and his guild had created multiple accounts on MMORPG to vote for ESO was made on the forums for the semi-finals after the voting closed and ESO had won. I copied that post and pasted into a PM which I sent to Bill Murphy, Managing Editor for, and whose name and image are in the introductory post on this thread. His reply was that does not check IP addresses or verify accounts and is not set up to. His attitude was that everybody had the option to create as many accounts as they wanted so that made it fair.

Majgic8 might be trolling but he started it after ESO had already won the semi-finals and before the finals even started.

Voted for ESO because it deserves my vote.  Quit playing LoTRO because it no longer deserved my free time.

After LoTRO went f2p/cash shop p2w I stuck with it in subscription mode for well over a year.  Saw the game through Isengard which I really did enjoy.  The steeds were a nice addition and warbands was also a good thing to add to the game.

But, f2p is like  cancer...slowly it rotted out LoTRO from the inside out.  Took me a while to leave, I had to find a home first.

ESO is home.    TSW you also get my vote.

Good luck finalist.

Hope you enjoy the f2p that will eventually becoming to ESO. Once they realize how much more income they will be making it won't be long till they jump on board. Then you won't have a home.

Fuck your home.

Because f2p mmorpgs are making so much cash? Idk any f2p mmorpgs who made 111 mill in 6 months. ESO is most likely puching 150 mill if not over by now.

The article says that the numbers are for micro-transactions in game only. In June ESO was said to have about 775,000 subscriptions. Even if ESO maintained those numbers through the 5 months May through September, that would mean that each and every subscriber would have needed to spend over $140.00 on in-game micro-transactions to generate $111 million in revenue. To put that in perspective, each subscriber would have needed to spend almost $30.00 every month in the cash shop - twice the subscription fee. Since monthly cash shop revenue per player is typically measured in cents rather than dollars, there is something very wrong with this scenario.

In the past this site has had problems with it's data, including, among other things  seeming to be confused with which games are subscription, which B2P and which F2P. I suspect that this 111 million figure is actually total gross revenue rather than cash shop only revenue.

Who hates on an MMO at launch????

I don't know of a launch that did not spawn a lot of hate. ESO is in no way special in the amount of hate it has gotten.  It's actually kinda mild compared to the hate TSW got at launch. If a game's actually got it the hate drops away after a while.

That just tells me you weren't paying attention to ESO between April 2013 - May 2014. I was there for the TSW launch and there was very little hate anywhere for it - some less than stellar reviews, yes, but gamers in general were very positive about it (and this site actually gave it one of the most positive reviews.) Its forum here was quite useful and mostly positive. And all that despite, as you know if you were there at launch, quite a few nasty little quest bugs that stopped you dead on your tracks unless you could find another instance of that area where the quest was working.

I have been involved in MMO launches since the 90's and to me the only other MMO that has gotten more hate around its launch (and in this case it was only after - not for months before as was the case for ESO) was Archeage.

I remember it a bit different.  The staff was positive to TSW but the forum base was pretty toxic.  A few vocal's specifically took every opportunity to express just how "bad" the company, the combat and animations where with a lot of others supporting them to lesser degrees.  In truth the game did have a lot of issues at launch that really poisoned what should have been a excellent launch.  ESO and SWTOR are probably the two most toxic launches I can recall but most MMO's move from their honeymoon to piss all over phases pretty quick on this site.  I would say few if any even make it out of open beta these days.

Fair enough. Maybe I just didn't pay attention to the trolls. As I recall what negativity there was, usually brought up AOC and the "Tortage bait and switch: :)

I did notice a decrease in ESO trolling when Wildstar launched... they just got busy playing I guess... for a little while anyway.

Yeah, how toxic anyone sees the hate is probably largely a function of how much you like a game. If you like it a lot it appears worse that it would to someone who did not care as much. Probably shouldn't have said the ESO hate was mild compared to the TSW hate. Both certainly got their share. I was not really speaking that much as to this site but rather more in general.

Indie developers, especially MMO developers, turn to Kickstarter because venture capital has pegged game development as a bad investment for the precise reason given in the article. Very few are successful. Funding a game is akin to buying a lottery ticket. If you were an investor would you have picked Goat Simulator as the game to back out of the hundreds to choose from?

When Curt Schilling went to fund his game development company with the plan of developing an MMO he could not find even a single backer in Boston, where there are more than 200 venture capital firms and where he had near god status because of his pivotal role in ending the Curse of the Babe. Even when he put up essentially the entire fortune he had accumulated playing baseball, no one would back him. So he had to make a deal with the devil and take a development loan from the State of Rhode Island and move his company there. The consequent failure of his company and his personal bankruptcy as a result merely added to the reluctance of traditional financing to invest in games.

The pics showing ESO highlighting this poll was from the final day of the Semi-Finals. Funcom did the same thing and it's perfectly legal as it promotes the poll for the highest possible sample size.

Going to say it again;

It was  a single line on the PATCHER, a little program that runs the updates before you even start the game, not the actual in-game login screen. FunCom Developers did exactly nothing promotional in the game. It was a Community Manager (Who is awesome by the way) who added the message on his own.

Could you please stop spreading something inaccurate? It's factually incorrect and as such is considerably bothering me.

The ESO message itself was indeed a completely legal (and clever) move.

You'll have to show me proof, since all lines on the "PATCHER" as you put it, are cataloged. Also, what company does the community manager work for who updates the launcher? If he doesn't work for Funcom, then I apologize.

Posts 423 and 429

I play TSW and LotRO.

Don't play EVE or ESO.

Easy vote.

I hope you do realize that the POINT of the post was not what the community did, but what the DEVELOPERS did in the game.

Way to overdo a post, sjeesh.

In which, I stated what the Funcom developers did. Read it again as I stated that they added the poll in their launcher.

To be technical, it was one of the Community Managers put it on the TSW launcher. The TSW devs seemed to be maintaining very much a 'hands off" attitude after the early accusations of dev involvement (which turned out to be legal anyway). He put it in because someone saw the notice on the TESO launcher and made  a post about it in the TSW forums. When Tomium saw that post he put a similar one on the TSW launcher. This was actually fairly late in the day so the effect was probably minimal. There is no way of knowing how much or little effect these launcher notices had.

Apparently, nothing that was done was illegal. I was the one who contacted Bill Murphy asking him to verify that everything, including making multiple accounts to pad the vote, were legit. He said they were. I did this because when I saw Majgik8ball's post saying that he and his guild created multiple accounts I knew it would rile people up, and I wanted to try to get either a confirmation that it was legit, or that was going to fix it to try to mitigate some of the anger.

Before Majgik8's post there was a bro thang going on between the two communities, which is a major factor in the responses of some TSW fans. i have no clue why he thought it was necessary to post an apparent admission to ballot stuffing considering the accusations aired during the contest period. The people posting here in anger now were some of those on the TSW Forums urging TSW players to 'play fair' and not make multiple accounts.

The combat itself doesn't bother me, it's the horribly clunky animations and stiff movement that accompanies them. They're even more horribly noticeable after playing GW2 and FFXIV for a bit before returning to the game, which I did (as both of those game have fantastic, fluid animations and movement).

I've never really got the complaint about the animations.  Most of the animations are relatively good, and the movement itself is nowhere near as "stiff" as FFXIV where you are pushed into animation locks and thumb twiddling long GCDs.

The problem with TSW's combat and animations has primarily been it's repetitiveness and spammy nature.  You might have a beautiful sword flourish animation, but when you repeat it back to back to back to back.... ad nauseum, it becomes pretty stale.  Which is a shame, because the rest of the combat system(the way different skills interact with each other) is quite good.

I put the spamming comments down to unimaginative decks and/or a fundamental lack of understanding of the way combat works.  Funcom could do a better job of explaining as part of the beginning tutorials and starter missions

I would bet that no matter how imaginative your deck build is you still press 1 to 2 keys many times more than the others just because of how the builder system works.  And it's much worse at lower levels when you don't have the options like you do once you start to fill out the wheel more and get your aux weapon.  I don't think TSW's combat is as bad as many people seem to write it off as and the animations don't bother me to much but the combat is pretty basic even if the system of building decks has a lot of options.  All in all the world especially after you complete Egypt is worth playing in although I ended up drifting away from the game because of how hard it is solo to make the jump from Translavania to issue 9 game play.  I don't know if they made that easier or not but the gear/ap jump needed to effectively play in issue 9 was pretty big.  I understand why it happened because issue 9 was built for the established player base that had been gearing up for a long time but at least the time I played it created a pretty big wall for new players to get over.

They did make a number of changes to Issue 9 to make it easier on new players.

Oh one more hint for all you that don't know this:

You can switch the targetting systems from dull tab-target to sort of Soft lock. With crosshair and all-over the shoulder camera. I think it is accessed by pressing "x"(by default).

Anyhow, look it up! It could affect your stance towards TSW.

(If only swtor had that crosshair mode...)

"t", not "x". "x" activates/deactivates fast run speed

I must have voted for ESO at least 20 times or more as I made many accounts.  I know a few guys in my guild did the same thing...........It was smart and a great way to get the win fair and square.

Is this trolling? God, I hope so.

Edit: In view of the post quoted, I would ask that review ALL votes cast (for both TSW and ESO) and then publicly certify the results.

ESO devs put a notice on their launcher. It is NOT against the rules. TSW devs (actually the community manager since FC gave most staff the holidays off) put a notice on the TSW launcher but only much later after most people had already logged on. Good strategic move, not illegal in any way. Our devs either missed the ball or were very carefully staying out of it because of the accusations leveled earlier. Either way, there is absolutely nothing wrong in the rules about a company posting to inform their community about the contest. It is illegal to coerce your community to vote or bribe them to vote.

Evidently you haven't noticed that every single one of these votes have not been listed as 'closed' until about a day after the deadline. Then all in that phase were listed as 'closed' at the same time. None of the totals changed for any pairing between the deadline and when they were marked 'closed'. It may be that the time between the deadline and the official closing is when checks for......irregularities.

I personally found the combat a little dull and slow paced when I first started playing as well, but I gave it a chance and made it to end-game. I did not regret it. The mechanics in some of the areas and dungeons are truly great.

Yeah, I have to say that I think I didn't really love the combat at the start, but I was too distracted by the Lovecraftian vibe of Kingsmouth to care. The dungeon bosses, though... Machine Tyrant is my second favorite fight and Hel is my favorite (I just wish it was available year-round). I'm the one in the dreads:

That fight looks pretty boring to me. Boss doesn't move, has really obvious tells, and a massive attack that you just stand behind a pillar to avoid. Was there any need to interrupt key abilities of the boss? Was there a tank taunting and you guys dpsing while getting healed and avoiding the circles on the floor by walking out of them? (trying to understand what is good about this).

I didn't see many videos that looked like boss fights in Tera so i don't know how representative this one is. I really don't see how this is superior in any way.

This is a video of the Machine tyrant fight:

I think it's a 12 hour sale. I'm not sure how that all works since Steams 24 hour sales are actually 48 hour sales so maybe the 12 hour sales are 24 hours? I guess time really is relative.

TSW zone/hubs and main cities are pretty uninspiring, though. ESO captures the feeling of cities and towns much better.

TSW is very focused on cohesion which can greatly pidgeon hold your character into certain builds.

TSW zone hubs are recreations of small sections of the cities involved. People can (and have) gone to the part of New York represented in game and posted pictures. It is spooky how accurate the representation is. Since TSW is representing real world cities in current time there is not the luxury of designing towns and cities as you might wish. They need to come pretty close to reality or the models get challenged. There are threads on the TSW forums specifically on the accuracy of the locale renditions.

This did not keep the devs from including Dana's apartment building from the Ghostbuster's movie in the Manhattan Exclusion Zone.

The pideon-holing of builds in TSW is more caused by players wanting to create and use builds for specific roles which they are used to or to pug groups which force conventions. To innovate you really need a regular stable group because changes to any one build can effect the entire group synergy so often the entire group needs to adjust. Pugs never want to do this so they demand specific standard builds. That's why I never pug in TSW.

I am not aware of any fight in TSW that is limited to one arrangement of builds.
