I'd advice against extreme overclocking if you're going to be running World Community Grid. If you increase your processor's voltage to allow overclocking, it'll reduce the processor's lifespan even if you manage to keep the temperatures in control. With normal gaming computer processor's lifespan won't be so much a problem, but if you're planning to let the computer run World Community Grid 24/7 lifespan will be an issue.

A small overclocking won't be a problem, but you look like you're planning something extreme and I'd advice against that if you're going to keep the processor stressed with World Community Grid.

Have you checked that the projects you're running can't use GPU? If it's something that supports GPU, then you should go for fast graphic card instead of fast processor.

Doesn't that count everyone who's been active after 23.12.2014?

That's close to 4 months, and includes those players who played their characters during return back week at Feb 27th - March 9th.

Thinking how some game design companies say "our next big, next gen MMO is coming out in 2013.. uh, 2014,,, uh, 2015 ... delayed again, layoffs this time, etc...." and how this impacts players who bought uber machines at some point in anticipation of a stated and expected delivery date.  A delivery date that never came to be.

To be fair to those folks, is it a reasonable expectation that dev's "freeze the specs" (meaning, keep the technical design level the same, regardless of timing of eventual delivery)?

If dev's are going to deliver late, then at least keep the specs in alignment with the the hardware standards of the original projected delivery date.  This way, if some clown has dropped $3K on a system, he or she is not going to have to do it all over again when the game actually releases a couple of years later.

Fair and reasonable, right?

Citation required.

  • Announcement detailing the specs at some time prior to release.
  • Details of what was purchased for that $3,000
  • Announcement detailing the specs at time of release.
  • Details of what would be needed to upgrade the computer meeting previous spec to meet the release spec.
I am betting you cannot come up with a single case where a substantial upgrade needed to be purchased to play the game.  At the very best you may come up with an overpriced "uber" computer purchased to meet some vague guess about what might be needed turned out to be wrong when the specs where actually announced.

I think you misunderstood. OP is telling us that he "bought uber machine in anticipation of a stated and expected delivery date", and now demands that the devs "keep the specs in alignment with the hardware standards of the original projected delivery date".

He's not claiming that the devs would have ever given false information about system requirements. He upgraded his system before the system requirements were told, and now he's angry because the game doesn't work.

So OP can only "come up with an overpriced "uber" computer purchased to meet some vague guess about what might be needed turned out to be wrong when the specs where actually announced."

Did I understand correctly: You're campaign for the rights of those gamers who upgrade their machine before the devs release information about required system specifications?

I don't think it's possible to write my opinion about this subject without getting banned, so I'll just leave the question here.

That's not a bad laptop. Maybe not the greatest. You could get a laptop capable of better FPS at that price from somewhere else, but not by much, and then you wouldn't get both SSD and HD. If you could live with just 256GB SSD then you could probably find better options.

If I were you, I'd think very critically about if you could use a desktop instead of a laptop. Desktops always offer more preformance at lower price, and with a laptop as large as that it's not like the laptop is very portable either. Do you really need a laptop instead of desktop computer?

If you really need a laptop, then that's good enough choice.

EDIT: That laptop won't meet your requirements of living for 5 years. No laptop or desktop will, the parts aren't designed to last reliably that long.

There's a good chance that the laptop might last for 5 years or even a lot longer than that, but there's also about as big chance it might break earlier, even a lot earlier. Don't count on it lasting for 5 years. /EDIT

PCI-E 2.0 will mean a bit slower performance than if you had PCI-E 3.0, but with most games the difference will be very small. Your processor is also nearly fast enough for GTX 980.

Purchasing GTX 980 for your current system might be a bit overkill, but if you have extra money it's not so much overpowered that buying it would be stupid. You'll definitely see some nice speed increases.

Your current video card only has 1 280MB of memory. The "shared" memory comes because video cards are also capable of using the computer's RAM, but a video card using the computer's RAM is always slower solution than video card using their own RAM. You normally don't need to worry about how much your video card has memory, though, normally video card speed is the limiting factor not how much memory it has.

According to specs posted on newegg, you have 2x SATA 6GB ports and 4x SATA 3GB ports. You could get as many hard drives/SSDs as you can until they're all filled up (6x). Your disk drive likely takes one of the ports, if you have one HD and one SSD they'll take one each. That would mean 3 ports used and still 3 empty ports left. I'd check the motherboard connectors and count them + read the motherboard manual to verify that you can actually connect a device to all the SATA ports (which is not always possible) before trying to purchase a total of 6 SATA devices, but if you have 3 SATA devices now you will be able to add 4th no problem.

Even if the device says SATA 6GB you can use it with SATA 3GB port and the performance loss will be only minimal.

EDIT: I didn't try to look at whether your PSU is good enough. /EDIT

Spam on is public enough that it's likely worth their while to have humans answering captchas.

The reward is never worth the journey. You'll either enjoy the journey, playing the game with all its highs and lows, or you will dislike it no matter how wonderful it'll feel to occasionally win.

Actually I'd like to suggest single player games for someone who thinks WoW is too complicated and it takes too much time to travel in it. You've played most of the big name MMOs, the rest are normally far more complicated and take more time to achieve something that in WoW, not less.

Deaththreat = Tina90?

Anyway, if you want to get cheap you can use something like this as dust filter:

It also helps a lot against dust if you're able to place the computer case somewhere high up.

I wonder, do you realize that you need also skill, experience and knowledge to create and run an MMO. Simply throwing money at the problem will not create a financially successful MMO. You'll need to start with something simpler than by creating a multi-million dollar project or you'll be bound to fail.

Bad advice man. I actually do not need the IT skills at all (If that's what you meant. If you meant general skills, then it's not bad advice). It's a department for other team members, which is the whole point of gathering a team. Skills I do need and have is managing the team. Of course throwing money at something won't solve the problem, I don't remember saying it does. All I said was money is a very useful tool and one that I need most at this moment. You would be wrong to assume my concept is not simple. I guess it's my fault for bad explanation.

No, you do need IT skills to pull of YOUR MMO idea. You can't assemble a team of IT professionals from scratch and set up an IT project if you've never been part of any kind of IT project, and you can't design game mechanisms for something as complex as an MMO if you don't have some knowledge about what's required to implement them.

You don't need to be professional programmer to do it, but you need to have prior knowledge of how IT projects are run to make a multi-million dollar IT project yourself.

In game industry ideas are cheap and easy to come by, execution is the problem.

Why have the class bound on a wheelchair when most of the MMOs are full of all kinds of mounts.

If you support to Pantheon, here's what you agree when you pledge them:

Items included in Pledge Packages may be substituted, changed or eliminated at any time for any reason or no reason at the sole discretion of VR.

Terms are subject to change at any time without notice.

You'll also agree to not sue any of their staff, and you agree to the terms by using their website. No requirements about registration or pledging, apparently anyone who's every surfed to their website is bound by their terms of use.

Great reasons to not support Pantheon:

1. Their Kickstarter failed

2. Afterwards they tried getting Crowdfunding money through their own website

3. Afterwards whole dev team was fired because they ran out of money

4. Afterwards there were charges that Brad McQuaid embezzled the crowdfunding money. They were never really proven nor disproven

5. Afterward Brad McQuaid announced that they'll be developing the game using volunteer devs.

6. Currently you can't give them crowfunding through the Subcribe -button on their website, it leads to error message, and for some reason their news have moved from website to forums too. It looks like they lost all the devs capable of updating the website.

7. They are now accepting donations through Patreon. It looks like the game has total of 3 paying supporters.

Yes, they're clearly doing some work with the game and releasing some videos. However with Brad McQuaids previous project Vanguard: Saga of Heroes there were later claims that when the project was with Microsoft they created things just for demoes to show Microsoft that they've been progressing.

As long as they don't release anything playable by us, there's high probability that they're just making demos and showing us pretty much everything they've created. Aka no game, not for a decade on their current development speed.

The one that's cheaper is better because it's more economical solution. Spending 175$ on a motherboard is not worth the price, rather buy a bit cheaper mobo and invest on good cooling.

PS. Quizzical is right

no no no no no. You should not be handed a medal or reward for losing because you stuck it out or tried your best. You get rewards because you won. Don't like it? Then get better instead of sticking with mediocrity.

What is next? Giving out a piece of loot to everyone in a raid when you wipe because everyone tried their best?

I disagree. I think it's most important that those who abandon a match and their teammates to do something else don't get better rewards than those who try their best and stick till the end.

That can mean either punishing those who abandon a match in progress, or rewarding those who don't abandon even after it looks like they're going to lose. I think both rewards and punishments should be used.

EDIT: However, I could agree to having a surrender option in battles with premade teams, that's different since premades are usually better organized. They should be allowed to yield to each other /EDIT

I think the time it would take to sell your wares through spamming sale messages could be better spend spamming LFG messages if a game without good LFG tool, and making groups for adventuring.

Please make tools for selling the wares as automated as possible, and have us socialize with people we're adventuring with.

No, MMORPGs should be balanced. Most MMOs today are just games and entertainment. They don't have any higher holy purpose of emulating a virtual world, they're just trying to be profitable for the creators and fun for the players.

If you don't like it, that's your problem, not the problem of people who like playing today's MMOs.
