P.S. if the cash shop is like Landmarks (and I bet it is) you get to use the items in beta and when the game goes live, you will get them back again then.

I'd bet against you. I think it looks like SOE is planning to start making money through selling those in-game consumables from day 1 of early access.

Chris "Dastardly Pirate" Roberts "is only generating ship JPGs and selling overpriced pixel ship packages "

Not true, he's also generating reports about generating those ship JPGs.

Seriously though, I don't think anyone's claimed that he wouldn't be generating a game. The issue is, I believe his game generating efforts aren't likely to result in a good game.

People who've got the money and will to buy the box have likely already bought it before the conversion. Going from P2P -> B2P wouldn't bring in the huge number of new players that going from P2P -> F2P brings.

Also, F2P model can often include some kind of subscription with access to more content (like SWTOR, Lotro, etc). That's very important when doing conversion from P2P because then you can keep on offering some sub service for your existing subscribers.

Actually the gaming companies risk very little. Apart from problems with the UI adapting something for stereoscopic 3D is not overly complicated (relatively speaking) and just like early 3D movies a passable product will be enough to explore the tech.

Now i think that education and museum/exhibitions are the big platforms to begin showing off this kind of tech. Gaming being a secondary market to begin with

That's the thing, for VR to succeed (in gaming) it needs breakthrough exclusive titles. It cant go with "passable" titles. For this you need significant investment not only in development but in marketing/PR campaign too.

Think of it on how EQ did with MMORPG.

I disagree. If VR needs to have exclusive titles or major marketing explaining people why we need it, then it's already failed.

VR will be successful the moment it's good enough display technology to compete against computer monitors. Not a moment sooner.

I disagree. Claims like "EQNext uses voxels" are very rarely an attempt to engage in scientific discussion about how the game engine is build. Most people use voxels as synonym for game engine that allows players the freedom to completely modify, create and destroy any terrain in-game bit by bit.

In that context it's correct to say that EQNext uses voxels. Our language allows words to have that kind of dual-meanings and inaccuracies.

Why is Trove not on the "Most improved MMO of 2014" list?

That was in game dev time, an extremely old build.

It's video from CES 2015. SOE devs had to pick up the best build of the game to show us, and this is what they picked.

I don't doubt that things like lighting, missing animations, and crappy interface are going to get improved. It's very early in development and things like that are going to be added later and polished a lot. But what about gameplay? To me it looks like SOE is releasing the game so early access that it can't be played.

That quote ( That was in game dev time, an extremely old build.) i took it directly from their twitter, and the dev actually told us on H1z1 Reddit about the build their were using during that time and why. because its was the only one working at the time, they last stream was way better looking then this, and worked perfectly. they will show us another stream soon just before EA release.

Then why were they using that old build at CES 2015? Because it was the only one working!

Apparently their newer builds were so buggy they couldn't let CES 2015 participants get any hands-on time with those newer builds. So that build shown at CES 2015 was the best.

There's always going to be a newer build if devs get more control over what parts of the game are shown and can avoid the new bugs and screw-ups that come with it. That's not much good outside the demos though.

That game lags like hell and looks completely unplayable. Shame on SOE for releasing crap like that.

Post Online: Each week the players of this MMO are given a random online forum with aim to make as many posts as possible without getting banned. Levels are then awarded based on number of posts.

PvP battles are always done 1v1 on forums focusing on pregnancy discussion.

Quess When to Log Online: A game where you initiate a fight, then go offline. You'll have to guess when is correct time to log back online (random time within next 2 hours) in order to win the battle. If you log at wrong time, you'll lose.

Raids are done by whole raid going offline and then doing a synchronized login back.

Solitaire the MMO: Featuring intense GvG battles where your guild can capture enemy castles or defend your own by guild members winning more solitaire games within set time than the opponent guild.

If you join hoping for Fallout -like experience, you'll be disappointed.

There's some resemblance to Fallout, so that if you like Fallout and like MMOs you'll probably like this one too, but not enough that I'd recommend Elder Scrolls Online for anyone who doesn't like MMOs.

Also, R&D / development / pre-production doesn't make money. SOE's life depends on this lineup of games succeeding and with all the money already invested I don't see them pulling the plug before launch. If they launch EQN and it tanks because they couldn't deliver on promises I can see most of SOE being gutted but not before. They are in a very similar situation to square between FFXIV and FFXIV:ARR launch.

I disagree. I think EQ Next's fate will depend much on Landmark's and H1Z1's success. If SOE feels that both Landmark and H1Z1 have failed and they can't fix them, I think they won't release a third game using same engine.

My guess would be:

We had Landmark Alpha at the beginning of 2014.

Now H1Z1 early access is coming at the beginning of 2015.

Maybe EQ Next will have its turn around January 2016.

Why make it so difficult when you can just purchase a pre-paid credit card and use that.

Even if you were to buy the 30$ Aurora package and get into the game, you will still have an enjoyable experience! Keep in mind that every ship is obtainable in game with in game currency, so if you work hard and trade smart, you too can have that 2500$ ship, you just wont have it right away.

Another thing i see people misbelieving is that the 2500$ ship will just be best and they will be able to "pew pew noobs all day long". This is not the case as every ship has its advantages and disadvantages, as well as roles. Larger ships with class 7-10 weapon hardpoints are slow, and do not track small agile ships well, while smaller ships are limited in weaponry that packs a punch and do not have large cargo capacity for hauling. You will be able to do alot of things in Star Citizen once the persistant universe comes out, and there is a ship for every function.

So what you are saying is my Toyota Corolla is just as good as a Lamborghini Veneno in different ways? That the Lamborghini may be faster but the jokes on them my Toyota has cheaper insurance and has a higher safety rating.

Is this sales pitch what makes people feel extra special buying the cheaper ships?

He is saying that one ship is the equivalent of a VW Sprinter  (dependable small cargo hauling vehicle), one is a Landrover (excellent offroader), one is a Ferrari F40 (excelllent speed, lousy suspension), one is a Suzuki Swift (small urban vehicle), one is a Ford Galaxy  (big easily reconfigurable family van) and yet another one is a  Belaz 75710 Ore Hauler.

Then all the different cars get placed in roads where demolition derby is allowed, and we'll see how the VW Beetle that comes in starter package can excel in its own role against a heavy-spender who bought a fire truck.

The premise that open source is easier to hack because the source is easily available is not really accurate.  The fact is that security depends on a lot of things that can offset each other.   Open source gives hackers more access for example, but closed source by definition precludes being able to audit it for security issues.  The only real consensus on the subject is that it depends.

For games in particular, the only secure client is one that doesn't make any decisions.  You have to make the server authoritative for everything that matters.  The vast majority of game hacking is because developers violate this rule.   Once you fix that,  the attack vector starts to look a lot like any other piece of software, where most security issues come from not handling user input in a secure way.

The thing is that it's always the 1% you have to worry about when it comes to hacking, and those people will not be stopped by hack shield, code obfuscation, encryption, or whatever trick you are trying to use.  And it just takes one guy who writes a hack tool to do the damage.  This is especially true with mmo's, because they tend to have longer lifespans.  You can use some of the above tricks now and then to prevent hacking for short time periods, but it's only a matter of time.

There are different classes of exploits that you need to worry about.  I'm not claiming that this will create duping bugs, teleportation hacks, or some other such things.  You can defend against those in the traditional ways, and open source doesn't hurt you there.

But there are purely client-side hacks possible in just about any real-time game.  This isn't a case of Alice sending a message to Bob and trying to conceal it from Eve.  Alice has to send a message to Bob's computer and conceal the message from Bob.  Security by obscurity is the only thing possible there, and open-source makes that much, much harder to do.

Suppose, for example, that you want to have some line of sight considerations so that you're not aware that a character is there until you have a clear line of sight to see the character.  If the server doesn't tell the client where the other character is until he's in line of sight, then the client has to further wait for Internet latency and then for the relevant assets to be loaded from storage before allowing the character to abruptly pop into existence.  If the server informs the client a little ahead of time, then the client can have that information loaded and display the character as soon as it should.

This, of course, creates the possibility that a hacked client could read the message coming from the server and inform the player that there's a character around the corner before it should be visible.  If the client is closed-source, you can encrypt the information, move it around, and generally make it a pain to find.  In an online game, you can even change the encryption scheme, encoding, or location of the data every single patch to constantly break exploits.  With an open-source client, you can't do that, a would-be hacker can read the source code to your security measures and work around them as fast as you can create them.

I think this is more a case of it being easier to use obfuscation, but needing to? I can see FPS games being more of an issue with this scenario then mmo's.

There are known ways to deal with the issues you laid out.   You can have low poly default skins that load quickly and then load in the complete detailed skin over time.  Or you can just use low poly skins to start with, like ESO does.

And with good optimization you can run network updates between 30ms - 60ms even with mass pvp.  And that's generally good enough to deal with the issue you brought up in an mmo setting.

That said,  there is nothing stopping you from adding obscurity on top of an open source, or not releasing some parts as open source.  I think this is entirely practical in many  cases.   There are other good reasons to not release all of the code, like not wanting to expose specific algorithms you use for combat/crafting, etc..  And remember that the vast majority of a codebase is not really any different then any other piece of software used on the internet.  There are only a limited number of cases where you have situations like the one you describe that might call for some type of obscurity.

My issue with obscurity, especially in the game industry, is that it has almost become the go to response for way too many cases.  Some of the better studios with the most talented people get it right, but I see indie developers messing this up all the time.  And very often real security suffers.

It's just a very dangerous tool to use.  In the right hands there is nothing wrong with using it, but given to an amateur and they are more likely to just shoot themselves in the foot.

I think you're falling into the trap of thinking yourself superior to every other professional out there. Large companies who can spend millions of dollars to their engine have a lot of trouble with these things. Assuming that you don't need to take the shortcut of using obscurity because you can make better quality product than other professionals is a sure-fire way to fail.

With that said, I don't think hacks will be that large problem with open source. I believe bots will be much larger problem with open source.

At the moment it's credit card alpha with most of the features missing. It's not impossible that they would change the game and allow for other means of being successful than credit card, but if I were you I wouldn't count on it. Just wait and see, or if you buy now know that you're buying access to alpha where the one who's best credit card user will likely win.
