General: Five IPs to Bring in a New Demographic
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/21/09 12:59:02 AM
Harry Potter Online was in development at Origin. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_14/87-The-Conquest-of-Origin.4 |

I know you say P2P is preferred, but I'd recommend DDO based on every other requirement you listed. It's the perfect game for a duo to jump in and complete a couple of adventures. Definitely PVE oriented and definitely fun! |

I'd recommend trying DAOC if you haven't. Don't bother with WAR. PVP doesn't get much more meaningful. Fairly steep learning curve, so find a good guild ASAP. 14-day trial, no software to buy. All the xpacks are free now. It's a good deal for one of the best MMOs ever made. New Ywain cluster brought all the servers together, so population is nice. |

Oh, and check out Ashen Empires (www.ashenempires.com). It's kind of similar to UO, but not nearly as much of a sandbox. It's also Item Shop supported. Not a bad game. Definitely old school. |

Jeez man, that sounds rough. I wish you a speedy recovery. Maybe try out Regnum Online? It's got a cool RvR endgame. There's an item shop, but you can play without it. It's from an Argentinian developer, but they have an English server. It doesn't get a lot of recognition around here but I enjoy playing it as a break from the P2P games. www.regnumonline.com.ar |

Poll: Have you played EQ, UO, or AC?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/26/09 5:38:58 PM
Beta'd and played UO for years. I was a huge fan of the Ultima series. Tried EQ but didn't like the interface or tiny viewing port or controls. Thought it was neat though. Didn't stick with it. Later I revisited after PoP and played for about a year. Played AC for around 3 months after release. Thought it was cool but was far too into UO to give it enough playtime. Always felt like I missed out. AC seems like it was a cool game back in the day. Want to try Fallen Earth next I think. Not big on MMOs with guns, but it seems interesting. I like the sandbox aspect. |

Play a free UO shard. There's a zillion out there. Pick your flavor. |

All I know is that I'm extremely disappointed in Sam Raimi for taking this gig. He's better than WoW: The Movie. Sam, bring on Evil Dead 4, FFS. You got all warmed up with Drag Me To Hell... the time is now. |

Paid for FTP, I don't care. I want some depth, so Dungeon Runners isn't quite what I'm looking for. But if you take DR combat and make it more fast paced... more "consoleish"... that's what I'd like to have in an MMO. I'm tempted by Dark Fall, but until they release a trial they aren't an option. Anything else? |

Hey brothers! lost my job looking for a FTP to hold me over for a month...

Check out Regnum Online. It's set up a lot like DAOC with 3 realm RVR combat. Free and the item shops are reasonable as they don't offer too much of an advantage to those who don't use them. I'm playing now... it's a grind, but it's been fun. The graphics are okay, not great. There is a graphic update coming soon. The devs seem really cool and responsive, but it's a small team so updates can be a little slow coming. Just check it out! |

Bleh, install Boot Camp only if you want to be really inconvenienced. You've got these native games (off the top of my head): EQMac - Great, oldschool EQ, awesome community - stuck in the past (Planes of Power era) Many PC MMO games will work with Crossover or Wine though, so try getting some demos to run. For instance, LOTRO runs great in Crossover if you use the custom launcher called PyLotro to get around .NET. I have also played a lot of DAOC on my Mac, though I do have to use the old character models. I think I have read that Vanguard works, but haven't tried it yet. You'll be surprised at what you can play without infesting your perfect computer with that virus called Windows. ;)

Just wondering. Any news? Maybe being unveiled at E3 this year? *fingers crossed* |

It's kind of a DAOC clone (which is good). I played it for a while and thought it was a fun and solid game. Seemed to have a fairly small English speaking community however... most Spanish I want to say? |

Where did the DAoC designers go to??
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/18/09 12:21:15 AM
Matt Firor ended up at Bethesda. He was one of the better guys on the Mythic team. Whatever MMO Bethesda has cooking up is under him. That's a good sign in my opinion. Mythic is really not the same people who designed and created DAOC anymore... as you can probably tell by playing WAR. They lost really competent people like Firor and ended up with chuckleheads like Paul Barnett. |

SHADOWBANE closeing all servers may1 ..isUO next?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/18/09 12:18:17 AM
Another one bites the dust... Honestly, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did as a F2P game. I considered installing it just a couple months ago to see what it was like. Glad I didn't now... |

You're right, I didn't mention the website. Oops! Don't let the front page fool you. There's no need to update it because there are no updates. ;) Just check the forums. Pretty active and nice people there. But most importantly, GET IN THE GAME! |

Everquest Mac edition has been running static for years, frozen at the PoP expansion. No new expacks were ever released for the Mac edition of the game, making it the closest you'll get to a permanent "classic" server. The community is small, but the population is steadily growing as people notice or remember this hidden gem. Don't have a Mac? Fair enough. But I will say that the game was designed to run on PowerPC (will also run on the newer Intel Macs just fine), so I have heard of some people picking up used eMacs for around $100-$150 (specifically the 1.4ghz model is awesome) and adding some cheap PC2700 memory just to get back into EQ... The entry barrier isn't actually that outrageous. Just check eBay or your local Craig's List. Of course, if money is no object you can always just buy a new Mac. Bonus: The game is stuck at the 2003 pricing model of $12.95 per month! Extra Added Bonus: No Stationcash! So in summary, if you are really searching for that EQ classic type game but don't think any of the newer games fit the bill, maybe consider picking up a used G4/G5 system and actually playing the 2003 version of EQ!

I played EUO for a while, but the community is tiny and elitist. Dransik has gone to the dogs. Elderlands isn't out yet. Any other games along those lines that anyone knows about? I hate anime style cartoony Dofus graphics, but I'd like a good PVE game that is similar to the ones above. The more Roguelike the better... Thx |

Game suggestions for ex-FFXI player....besides WoW
LFGame « General Discussion 3/30/09 7:07:59 PM
I would second the Spellborn suggestion. I'm playing through the free area now and it's grabbed me more than other games I've tried recently. |
|
|
FFXI is pretty unique with it's in-depth storytelling... LOTRO is the only other one like that AFAIK. Haven't done the crafting side myself, but I've heard good things about it from the crafting crowd, so it might not disappoint there either. |
