For all you Dark Age of Camelot fans (including myself), this name should ring a bell.  The very fact that the man who helped developed the first few years of Dark Age of Camelot, Matt Firor, is here as lead producer on this project -  just floors me.  I never could have imagined that this would come to pass.

Many of us in the daoc community over the years have even joked about how amazing it would be to see DAoC with Elder Scrolls concepts and graphics.  And lo and behold, here we are.

I can only imagine the stacks of folks who work for other mmorpg titles who are shaking in their boots right now.  Remember, true believers, Dark Age of Camelot was such a threat to the industry (because of how it was conceptualized), that it had to be bought and buried by Electronic Arts.  There was such a worry that Dark Age gamers would leave Warhammer (if there was even so much as an ounce of improvement on the old venerable title), that even when Mythic announced that Dark Age of Camelot would have  a new server (Origin), even THAT got shut down.  There was never any mention later on and since, as to why a server that a majority of the player base voted for, was not put into effect.  Disgusting, really.

By 2009, shortly after the EA buyout of Mythic, a number of Mythic staff were canned.  Warhammer heralded in, with its investors thinking that with Dark Age swept under a rug, there would be plenty of fans shifting to this title.  That of course, happened for just long enough for the DAoC'ers to see that Warhammer was not up to DAoC expectations.

WIth ESO, we will finally get what all of us Dark Age gamers knew was possible all along: a graphically detailed, immersive world, set in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls lore, with the same level of intelligence that formed the varying classes and races of the 3 faction ground breaker that was Dark Age.

For folks who are bashing this title (boggles me), why not support the fact that so few developers have the vision and intelligence to go three faction with unique (and here's the key, this isn't just server v server v server pvp), there are unique classes and races in EACH faction.  This alone is never done.

The entire problem with the industry has been its slip into mediocrity.  Why play Rift, when I can play WoW?  Why play GW2 when I can play WoW?  Why play any "new" release, when I can play an mmorpg that offers the same + more and has a far better population?

Now I can say, why play WoW, if we have Elder Scrolls Online.   At last.

This means nothing at all. Check up on ie Richard Garriott and Brad McQuaid.

No matter how great a dev was in the past, that may not mean anything at all for their next projects. I suggest you hype the game for what the game may offer, not for who's behind it.

Not to mention that Dark Age of Camelot was not as popular as he remembers it. Like I said before Elder Scrolls fans want an Elder Scrolls like game. DAoC while a great game for it's time is the polar opposite of everything that makes a TES game what it is at it's core. Which fan group should they be looking to attract? The barely 250 thousand DAoC fans or the well over 10 million fans that bought TES V: Skyrim? To me this should be a no brainer.

Edit: Oh and on a side note... After the Devs at Zenimax Online have been reading threads like this one for a couple of weeks now on their own forum and others I can picture Todd Howard with a big ass grin on his face telling them, "I tried to tell you but you just wouldn't listen"... LOL

Bren

I just don't understand why would any sane person take a successful gaming IP like TES and throw out everything that made the IP what it is?

Skyrim has sold over 10 million copies. All they had to do was take Skyrim and make it an MMO, with a few changes, and *boom* GOTY. But for some unexplained reason they decided to go with the mediocre MMO approach. It obviously worked for SWTOR, so I guess it should work for TESO, right?

/sarcasm

I still hope that TESO is a late April fools joke.

Then you actually read what TESO us doing and it sounds like a BETTER gw2.
Non gameyfied pvp with wow kiddie friendly 2 week reset
Huge open world not all zoned up.
3 times the pve content
Open dungeons
The guilds you can join
Etc..

I would have said it differently, but yes, you are right. Here we have two games to come out in 2012 and 2013 with very comparable feature sets, one gets flamed to hell and the other hyped to heaven. Those are the times ...

I'm a sandbox gamer (like some of you know) and had hoped for more than a themepark but TESO will very probably be the first themepark game I'll buy and play in many, many years. But then I fully expect that a large majority of the posters critical to TESO will buy it too. Many will even pre-order or pre-purchase it to enjoy the marketing campaign Zenimax will call beta-weekend. :)

TESO gets flamed because it's deviating too far from what people come to expect from a TES game.

it may have some interesting ideas but it's not a true TES game. That's why I have an issue with it. Even the art style is not TES.

Either people have zero reading skills or are purposefully being dumb but the number of people talking about 2 weeks polish just need to be slapped in the face.

Read the report people.

The delay is NOT to polish the game (although it does allow 2 weeks of continued development work) but the delay is to incorporate a change in their marketing/release strategy. It happens, things change. But please, oh pretty please, stop making stupid comments about the reason for the delay being to work on the game!

I don't understand what you're complaining about. You just said that Funcom will continue working on the game during the 2 week marketing delay. For some people the 2 extra weeks of development are more important than the 2 extra weeks of implementing a better release strategy. So they are concentrating on that, rather than parroting the press release.

My hope is that during one of their release startegy meetings they'll realize that releasing on July 3rd is probably the worst possible thing you can do in the USA. Yes, I know that they aren't an american company but a large chunk of their customer base is in the US.

Personally I think there was a delay on the new server hardware and they want to make sure they have those servers setup and load tested prior to pushing the next client update. Hence they get pushed.

And not stress tested.

Seriously!? Whats the hype? Remember this post when you have played GW2 for 1 month, please! This is nothing more than WoW with a LITTLE better graphic and some other features. There wont be more to it, belive me.

Im so tired reading GW2 fanbois flaming all other threads cause they think this game will be something special, it wont.

Please flame flame flame me....but it doesnt matter you will all see what Im talking about. Calm down and try something very different if that is what you are looking for, If not, sure GW2 will be like WoW 2 if u like that. And I guess many ppl like that, but dont expect anything more of it.

Peace, love and understanding to you all!

Thank you for your valuable input. Good luck in your future endeavors.

The question should be not "whether or not GW2 is a casual or a hardcore game?" It should be "whether or not GW2 is a fun game?"

For some reason people put these artificial limiters on games which make little sense to me. Just because you're a hardcore gamer, doesn't mean that you can't have fun with casual game or vice versa. Hell, I'm a pretty big FPS fan but it doesn't mean that I can't enjoy a bit of Plants vs Zombies every once in a while. People should concentrate more on having fun rather than some arbitrary labels that don't really mean much anyway.

Just my opinion.

Hush!

This is a forum for discussing games. Fun has nothing to do with that. SRS BZNZ.

You're absolutely right. I should know better by now.

Well, at least Funcom are being realistic about it and are delaying the game, even if it's only 2 weeks. I don't believe that whole marketing nonsense, everyone who has played the game, and can look at it without rose colored glasses, understands that TSW needs more time in development. Hopefully 2 weeks will be enough.

I have to be honest here. While the stories, the investigation quests and the evironmental graphics are intriguing, the combat is absolute rubbish. There is just something not right about standing toe to toe with your opponent, spraying him with an assault rifle, while he's hitting you with a melee weapon.

The game has numerious issues and being that release is about 3 weeks away, this is going to be another AoC all over again. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. You can't place consumables on the action bar nor can you assign a keybind to them. You have to create a special bag for them and lock that bag into place. Moreover, most consumable icons look very similar so in a heat of battle, where every second counts, you're not really sure if you're about to click the health potion or a +hit potion. It's painfully obvious that QA did not spend enough time on the UI which, while looking nice, is very unintuitive and confusing. Neither have the spent enough time QAing crafting.

Does TSW have redeeming qualities? Absolutely, but most of the game is simply not finished and needs at least 3 more months in the oven. At the very least 3, preferably 6.

That's just my opinion after playing 2 beta weekends. Apparently closed beta has a newer client and the CB testers obviously have access to more content. BWE's were limited to London and Kingsmouth. However, I highly doubt that the CB client is in a much better state that the one used in the BWE.

Yes six more months due to consumables looking the same, great analysis...

Every MMO would be better if they put it off for another 6 months.  This will not be another AoC, that was just a crap game overall on top of a very buggy release.  The weekend beta was more playable than AoC was at lauch so people can save their breath about this being another AoC lauch.

For the love of all things holy, where are all these everything must now play like FPS people coming from?  I don't think it's the worlds best MMO combat but damn it's not that bad.  You would think I was making some FPS Mountain Dew chugging teenager play EQ's combat the way people are reacting.

Deciding to buy this game or not off of one small zone and a small percentage of the skills that will be available is probably not a great idea either for or against.

The consumable thing was an example. This is not a feedback thread and I didn't want to list all of the issues with the game. But the simple fact that you cannot place consumables on an action bar or even assign keybinds to them speaks very loudly of the state of the game. I mean, that basic functionality that should have been in place since the alpha version.

No this doesn't speak to anything, but you shouldn't be taking up one of your seven hot bar slots with a consumable. We'll see though what the do with them.

The game runs nearly as good as WoW in beta. It's not cpu bound  like swtor, and gw2.

They need to add a smaller, keybindable action bar (4-6 slots) specifically for consumables, imo. Or at least allow us to assign keybinds to that extra bag, if they insist on keeping it.

Come on guys, it's pretty obvious the OP has confused the current WvW cap for each server with the PvE server cap. There were hundreds of thousands of people in BWE1, spread accross 48 servers. I'm guessing the server caps were at least 6,000 and  likely 8,000+ per server.

As others have pointed out, the Trading Post is Global, shared by all servers in the game, so there is absolutely no issue with there being insufficient players for the economy!

I never heard of a server hitting capacity during BWE though.  Individual ZONES hit capacity, and shunted people over to overflow zones, but I never heard even a whisper of somebody mentioning not being able to create a character on a server, or not being able to play because they had a full server.

Darkhaven was over capacity and Anet turned off new accounts from creating characters on it. I joined Darkhaven as soon as the BWE started and my friend tried to create a character on it later that night and he couldn't. It was telling him something about the server being full. I don't remember the exact message.

No offense, but politicians don't make for reliable sources of financial information. Not saying he's wrong, but in my experience most politicos seem to believe "3 million" means "somewhere between 0.3 and 30 million". ;)

Oh I'm not saying that he's right, just stating what he said. I have very little trust in what your average, run of the mill politician says these days. Especially when it comes to money issues.

Oh hey fearless. I see you keep saying the same ol things. It is your opinion and you do have a right to express it. Sure bad players will play bad. Do dumb stuff like trying to tank a mob with an assualt rifle, but hey what can you do.

The game runs smooth as silk.  It could launch today. Even in beta it's a very polished game full of content with incredible combat , crafting, questing, graphics and story.

There is a lot more to a game than running smooth, which it doesn't btw. The game is not finished and you either don't see it or are simply being dishonest by claiming otherwise.

If I had to guess, I'd say F2P in 6 months to a year. But whatever, I'm not going to be playing it anyway, so good luck with it.

I'm not sure where the OP got that 650 figure but it doesn't sound right. According to ANet, "hundreds of thousands" of player pre-purchased GW2. They had 48 servers during the BWE. If I had to guess, I'd say server capacity was at about 2000. Moreover, during an interview after that BWE, Mike O'Brien stated that they are planning to increase server capacity.

Also, i hope there isnt a massive recipe grind like in other mmos (eg running 100 raids in hopes of the "rare" recipe drop you need). Kinda weird, in gear based games i want nothing to do with crafting... but in gw2 i do. Go figure :)

From what I understand, the auction house is cross sever.

I don't see how they could just go completely out of business after launching a game that I would consider a decent success.

I used to be a mosquito and a reaver pilot in the first game, mosquito being my favorite. Can't wait to give it a spin in PS2.

I used to play as Vanu in Planetside. Looks like I'm going to play as Vanu in Planetside 2 as well.

The purple is just too much sexy.
