Vanguard isn't a sandbox MMO. Vanguard is a raid/end-game oriented MMO. Just because it allows you to do other things doesn't mean it is a sandbox MMO. It will still be along the same lines of EQ, EQ2, and WoW, where the main focus of the game is around raiding end-game mobs to get better gear. It will be another game in which people who can dedicated long hours every week will be better at the game, simply because they have more time invested, and not because they actually are better at the game than others. Sandbox MMOs would be games like Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, and SWG when it first started. These games have no clear end-game, and are whatever you make of them. Time put into the game doesn't matter, because knowledge of the in-game world and mechanics of the game will make you a better player in the game than another who might have played just as long as you. These games are typically player-driven, due to the need for crafting as opposed to loot from raids. |

I don't get why people make these posts as if expecting that nobody here has ever heard of the game.

The two greatest RPG licenses, lost to us! (for now) [D+D, LOTR]

That, and they've butchered AC1 now. It is nowhere near as great as it once was, because they stopped caring about it a long time ago.

Of course, what you fail to mention is that the screenshot you found happens to be on the -lowest possible settings-. Yes, the graphics in AC are outdated, but they are nowhere near as terrible as you're trying to portray them. But the point stands, Darkfall has very decent graphics as far as today's standards go. They are not amazing, and you probably won't need a killer system to run the game, but they aren't terrible or outdated. |

Sandbox MMOs are hard to find in the current generation of MMOs. You're in luck though, because there seem to be a couple decent looking sandbox-style MMOs coming out in the near future.
Darkfall will be your best bet if it ever releases. |

"...and griefing"
That's what gives true PvPers a bad name. Go away. I'm all for looting and FFA PvP, but I enjoy those type of games for the tight-knit community they create, and not to ruin another person's experience. |

Pretty sure it said a maximum of 5 entries (1 per day logged in).
That said, I think I had all 5 entries and won a spot. Not bad odds really out of the 22,500+ that entered. |

Technically, the Warcraft art style was copied from Warhammer years ago. Warhammer has been around much longer, and has always adopted that cartoonish style.
Second, how in any way do the dwarfs in Darkfall look like WoW's? There are only so many ways a dwarf can look, and Darkfall certainly doesn't have the same cartoonish style that WoW has. Seems to me that they went with a slightly more realistic look with the dwarfs. Third, how can you base an entire game's credibility off of one character model? Just because one character model looks similar to something in a different game, doesn't mean the entire game's graphical style is themed the exact same. Not only that, but the game's graphics mean nothing as far as the game's similarities go. Gameplay is everything when it comes to wether or not a game is a 'clone' of another one. WoW and Darkfall are nothing alike. |

So you're basically saying any game that promises to have things in it, and is not currently released... is like SB. Simply because there's a chance that those features may never be put into the game?
I'm pretty sure every single MMO in existance has scrapped features before being released. You're comparing some pretty stupid things between the two. The only similarities are a few of the features. I'm pretty sure the gameplay is nothing alike, and from the videos I've seen the graphics are also NOTHING alike. Shadowbane had graphics that seriously made the game unplayable because they were so ugly, and its gameplay and interface was so clunky I wanted to gouge my eyes out and cut off my hands. |

FFA PvP creates a great community, contrary to the belief of those who look at it as one big gankfest. In AC, as well as EQ's FFA server (Rallos Zek, now known as simply Zek), the FFA PvP created a lot of in-game politics that you just don't get to see in games with normal PvP. Guilds will ally with eachother, wars will break out. There will be loners who kill everyone they see, and there will be guilds made up of people who kill everyone they see.
It ends up being a risk vs. reward system, where these guilds of random PKers will become well known and they will end up being forced to deal within smaller circles. Then, you'll have the groups who will only attack random-PKers and guilds that they are at war with. (And believe me, random PKers usually become pretty well known. In both AC and EQ, you came to recognize certain people and they would be attacked on sight by pretty much everyone) And you'll get the loners, who only attack if they are attacked. The 'anti-PKer' so to speak.. they aren't against killing someone, but they'd rather play the game as a PvE game, UNTIL someone decides to try to kill them, or unless they come across a previous enemy and decide to attack them. Usually the most common type of player in PvP games. The best part, is that people who spent their entire lives in game killing everyone they came across, will be known for that later on. People -can- shun someone from society simply by refusing to do business with them, group with them, or let them in their guilds. This is the beauty of FFA PvP games. Have someone you don't like? Guess what... you can actually do something about it! |

Out of curiousity though, did you ever play it in the days before the -current- Turbine ran it? What makes it such a bad game, since you seem to enjoy trashing it. Or do you just not like it because it was a sandbox MMO instead of a raid-oriented MMO?

Pretty sure the majority of those who actually played AC -still- think it was one of the greatest MMOs of all time. I know I do. Granted, the current state of the game is terrible because of what Turbine did to it. But the way they did things in the game, is IMO the best ever.
From the story-line, to the skill-based system, to the sandbox non-raid oriented system, to the PvP and the questing system. Until this past year, not once did they even have a 'kill X number of these mobs' quest. I wish another company would do things in a similar way instead of everyone going with a class-based raid-oriented game. Turbine -was- a great company. Unfortunately, most of the original team no longer exists as a part of the company and that is why they can't put out a good game. The fact that AC is still around is enough of a statement. Granted, I'll say it again.. the game in its current state is nothing compared to how it used to be. Were it still as it was two or more years ago, I and many others would still be playing it. |

Yeah, I'm pretty sick of PvP being given a bad name because of the few idiots who think PvP exists to ruin other gamers' experiences.
I enjoy FFA PvP with looting because it gives me a challenge. The adrenaline rush it great, and knowing that you could actually lose something makes it worth it. It has nothing to do with running around ganking lowbies or any of that crap. It has everything to do with the community created in FFA PvP games, where you rely on your friends to back you up and help you when you're in trouble. If you get knocked down, you either get back on your feet and try again, or you get someone to help you. True 'hardcore PvPers' are in it for the challenge, and most importantly the honor and respect of other players when they know that you are indeed better than them. This was one of the greatest things back in the days of AC when red PK was still popular. 75% of the PKers were honorable. You could gank someone and not loot them, and it was a show of respect as an honorable person.. a way of saying "Hey.. no hard feelings eh?" But now, all people look at are the groups of people who run around wanting to kill people just because they can, because there are no penalties associated with it. Because they want to ruin the experience of another gamer. I would bet that if a game with good gameplay came out, and they had FFA PvP -with- looting, it would have a huge playerbase. Yeah, you will always have your asshats in games like that, but the majority of the community is going to be great. The best part about those games was that if you started killing random people just because you could, your name got out there and people treated you differently. You'd be treated like an outcast if you were an ass to people. |

Do you need a Monster PC to play this game?

Your PC shouldn't be having problems, but if anyone remembers, AO has always had issues with ridiculous lag.

FFS, Gameloading, stop saying PvE games (and all western MMOs) are based on EQ.
Seriously, get a new argument. You're basically assuming that any game that doesn't have a PvP end-game is based on EQ. Have you ever actually played EQ into the high levels? If so, have you ever then played DAoC, AC, WoW, SWG, AO, etc.. etc..? Please tell me this isn't going over your head here, and that you're getting my point. Every argument I see you take part in over Eastern vs. Western MMOs, you always have to mention something about them being just like EQ, when really I doubt you have played the mainstream western MMOs out there, or you would realize how different the games really are from EQ. Or at least start giving reasons as to why you think a certain game is like EQ, and I do mean specific reasons.. not just general statements, but actual things in common that 'all' western MMOs have in common with EQ that they don't have in common with eastern MMOs. |

I will always stand by Asheron's Call 1 as having the best, and most immersive storyline in any MMO. When I started playing, it was so easy to get into and has been the only game that I have actually -wanted- to follow the story in.

Yay nov-dev is the months of western mmorpgs!!

I think one problem is that people are getting 'challenging' confused with 'time consuming'.
There are really no -challenging- MMOs on the market at the current time. Eastern or Western. They are all simply time consuming, but rather easy to actually play. I would rather face some big challenge that may take me an hour or so, and actually make some progress and feel like I accomplished something, than spend two hours doing something easy but making the same progress. |

The main difference gameplay-wise is that western MMOs are based on quest grinding, while eastern are based on just kill grinding. Both are essentially the same, except that eastern MMOs don't hide the fact.
Both are still based on high-end gaming content. Doesn't matter if it's PvP or raiding. They still have the same goal in mind. The difference that I see, is that western MMOs tend to focus more on lore and each game is more diverse than the eastern MMOs which tend to focus less on lore and storyline quests. Western MMOs at least try to give you a reason for killing mobs, and while there is no difference in how tedious it can be in both types of MMOs, it at least -seems- less tedious because of the involvement with the world. Also, it is ignorant to assume that all western MMOs are like Everquest. Everquest started the trend, but in no way defined the genre. The only similarities it has with current MMOs would be the leveling/class system that most games use, and you could even argue that there were several MMOs before EQ that used the system as well. I started playing MMOs in the days of UO/AC/EQ. I've played AC and EQ. AC was by far my favorite MMO of all time. EQ, not so much. Yet, I still have enjoyed current generations of MMOs. So if EQ = western MMOs, why do I enjoy current western MMOs, yet absolutely loathe the way EQ did things? I played EQ when it was in its prime by the way, years ago, and in recent times I've also had max level characters on the FFA PvP server. That doesn't mean I think the game was great.. it means I had friends who I enjoyed playing with. That tidbit of information was just to clarify things before anyone assumed I didn't play the game when it was 'at its best'. |

Last I heard, AD was backing out of GMing for the game due to the negative light it was shedding on them. Not sure if there is any substance to this rumor, but I read something about it.

I miss the quest system that Asheron's Call 1 had. If anyone played back in the day, they know what I'm talking about.
In fact, I can't recall the game ever having a 'kill x number of these mobs' quests until the new live team took over recently. The game's quests usually involved collecting pieces of things from quest dungeons, piecing them together.. sometimes using that item or turning it in. Killing a special mob, entering a dungeon filled with puzzles, and getting your final item (which was actually a cool unique item, instead of just a piece of random set gear) I think the thing I liked the most was that not all quests were even useful. Some were there just to get something that looked cool and that not many other people could get. |
