We have too much of everything.   Prepare to be bombarded with choices.    Crest whitening, Crest Super Fresh Whitening, Crest Tarter Control Super Fresh Whitening,  Crest  Cinnamon Super Fresh Tarter Control Whitening.  Crest, Pepsodent, Aqua Fresh, Colgate, Arm and Hammer (and more) each brand fighting for space on the shelves.  We have more choices of toothpaste than we have teeth.   This pattern is repeated in almost every product.    From canned beans to feminine protection.   We are rampant consumers.

1.   EvE  Online:    I don't play anymore but I loved it, love reading about it.   I find the game fascinating.

2.  WoW:   After playing so many crap games in the past 18 months, I've learned to really appreciate the

polished, seamless world that Blizzard brought us.

3.  EQ 2:   At launch I couldn't make it past lvl 12 before I gave up.    Years later it has matured into a

      Beautiful  PvE mmorp.

4.  Ultima Online.    Like a first girlfriend, this is my first MMORPG.   I'll always have a special place in my

     heart UO.

5.  City of Heroes.     FUN FUN FUN!  That is until I got past lvl  35.

Honorable mentions:   Lineage 2 and Anarchy Online.

I fondly remember Ultima Online, where...on very rare occasions, on some mobs, you could find items that they (the mob) had acquired from killing a real player.

     I love this topic.

To aid in the "immersion" factor, I feel it would be smart for a developer to somehow reconcile this issue (and I'm sure in a game somewhere it has been taken care of).   If not gold, than perhaps something that can be easily exchanged for gold.    I totally agree that finding a "Super Quasi-deluxe 2-handed Sword of  Reckoning"  on a dead rat kills the suspension of disbelief.   What I suspect developers have to weigh is exactly how much realism are people willing to deal with before the game gets too tedious.

You are going to have to kill something to level.

You are going to need something as a reward to keep you killing (besides XP).

If  they made loot mob specific (raw materials from animals, equipable items from humanoids) They would have to make sure the materials gained from the animals roughly equaled the drops from humanoids.   Otherwise I fear players would gravitate towards a specific mob.   I'm sure it is possible, as I'm sure its probably being executed in a number of existing games.    I'd use EvE as an example but I don't recall ever killing a living thing in that game (besides NPC humanoids and Players).

I know a lot of people have poo poo'd the idea of  a Starcraft mmo,  but I think it has great potential.

My only foray into free to play has been 2moons.

I spent more money on that game in 2 months than i would have if I had purchased a full time game and subscribed.

There are a handful of aspects about the game that I appreciate.   There is an endless list of annoyances and design flaws.

My vote goes for pay to play.

1)  EvE:   A game made fascinating by both the game mechanics and the players themselves.

2)  WoW:  The only game I have maxed a character in.

3) Ultima Online:   I got a free demo with a PC Gamer magazine back in 2000 and despite laughing out loud   at the graphics (even back then) I was hooked.

4)  City of Heroes.   A real blast (until I got past lvl 40).

5)  Everquest 2:  The newer zones are breathtaking and there is so much to do.

6)  Lineage 2:  My first pk! (and first time being pk'd).   Playing knowing that at anytime you could be ganked and lose your uber wand of greatness to another player was almost too much to bear.   Beautiful graphics (even by today's standards).

7)  Anarchy Online:  My first 3D mmo.   Very complex "implant" system.   Complex enough for me never to really learn it.   My brawler (is that right?) made it to lvl 30 before I called it quits.

Games I have played but didn't like:

1)  2 Moons:   Take a low content Korean hack'n slash Grind-a-thon, translate it to English (poorly), add some blood and foul language (to get a mature rating) slap some guys name on it (David Perry) and you'll have 2 Moons.

2)  Guildwars:   Coming from City of Heroes, I could not get past the fact that not only could I NOT jump, but I couldn't swim either, and obstacles of 1" required that I run around them.    This annoyance coupled with the fact that I never felt like I was playing an mmo ruined this game for me.

3)  Vangaurd:   I bought this game the day it came out.   I knew during character creation that I had made a mistake.   I was stuck in a building wall withing 10 minutes of my first day.    The biggest let down (mmorpg wise) of my life and the reason today  why I refuse to buy anything that does not offer me a reasonable trial period.

If I try EvE again (and I consider it every day) it will be my 3rd time as well.   I   Started at  launch with dual accounts and lasted about 6 weeks.   At that time a corp called "Mo0" ruled the galaxy.   I got bored mining and was too much of a scardy cat to go into zero security.

2nd go around was fun, I was growing 2 accounts with the special ccp was running with learning skills and had my original 2 accounts running missions.   I had moved my operations to Jita when ccp Moved my agents (to reduce traffic in a laggy system).   Not only did they move them, but they made them inactive for 30 days.   Which left me twiddling my thumbs.   I was also a bit miffed that I was going to have to move all my stuff to another system.   I lost interest again and quit.

I love the game, I always speak fondly of it.   The ships are beautiful, the ambiant sounds and music is spectacular.    I get overwhelmed sometimes with how deep this game is, and I think thats what keeps me away.

I think if they made an "EvE light"  I'd check it out as well.   I'm wondering if maybe Jumpgate Evolution might not do the trick.   Or.... Perhaps I'll check out EvE for a 3rd time as well.

Anyone who has not tried EvE has to check it out.

The only way I'll play any game is if I'm offered a free trial.   I'm tired of donating money to hopeless causes (Vangaurd).

So I'll try both provided they offer a free trial (something longer than three days...hear me Tabula Rasa?)

As Gameloading mentioned in the other thread on this subject, Akklaim purchased rights to the U.S. only (or perhaps North America).   The original game "Dekaron" is about 2 years old.   Dekaron is the one selling licenses to their game that are limited geographically.

Color yourself lucky.   I wish it had not been available in the U.S.   I'm embarrassed to admit I got to level 60 (and 85%) before I couldn't bring myself to log on anymore.     Painfully lacking in content.   Full of so many annoyances.

And this "free to play" stuff... well... I can't imagine playing with two bags, and the only way you can get more inventory space is to spend real money.

Health potions... well they only stack in 5's. . . and you'll need MANY.  Your health as a bagi warrior will not recharge very fast.    I've returned to Loa, taken a dump... came back and still had plenty of health to recover.  Its that slow.

So... low inventory space and multiple potions that only stack in 5's makes it tough so guess what? You can buy 5000 potions (in one stack) with real money.

Its like that.

I've never left a game (free or pay) with a worse taste in my mouth.

Seriously, it's not TR's fault that you chose not to use your time given to you for FREE as wisely as you should have.  Get another free trial if you really want to try it out.

I don't in three days, have the time to devote to games I know I like.   Let alone a trial.  My original post was not intended to express disappointment in the game, rather the time given to try the game.

It is SOMEBODY'S decision to make it a 3 day trial, but it wasn't mine.    14 days... why not?   Hell give me a week at least, but 3 days?   If you play 2 hours a day for 14 days thats 24 hours... how bout a 24 hour game time trial?

What do I have to do to get another 3 day trial?  Create another mmorpg account?

Prediction:   They will eventually offer a 14 day trial.   Then I promise I'll give it another try.

I promise you this, I will NEVER buy a game again before I get to try it for FREE.   Vangaurd taught me THAT lesson.

Too many of these games lately have been chop jobs.   I WANT TO TEST DRIVE MY RIDE.

I suspected as much... (that more time might lead to boredom).

There is something very cathartic about  beating the crap out of something, and thats why I always end up devoting most of my play time towards melee based characters.

I found shooting things strangely dissatisfying.

The 3 day trial left me with more questions then what I had started out with.

3 days (real life) was just not enough.   People have lives and in those three days I was able to play maybe 2 hours.   Not enough time for me make a decision on buying the game.

Perhaps trials that offer actual game time could be offered?

"10 hours free trial"

Just a thought...
