Just play EVE. It's awesome.

Tried it on and off for a long while but every time the UI and combat puts me of... and I hate scammers which seems to run rampant in that game.

Scammers are a part of the game in EVE. They're another type of enemy you have to watch out for. They don't have players like that in Darkfall?

And honestly, Tera? If you like games like Darkfall and UO, I can understand you not liking GW2, but Tera? Pffff, okay.

And you're seriously butthurt because ArenaNet are making money off of the gem store? If this puts you off, you're going to have a very hard time playing anything at all very soon. Microtransactions are the replacement for subscriptions. Subscriptions are dead. Pathfinder Online is using microtransactions instead of subs, too, you know, and it's the "next big" sandbox game. Gonna skip it?

And I dont see where I did bashing of the game, I said it was fun for a while but lacks longetivity. If that is bashing in your book then you are the one with the problem.

Calling something the "fast food equivalent" of anything would be considered bashing it.

It was awesome the first few years, but it hasn't aged well.

I only played EVE very briefly, and I could name a few surface problems with it, but one of those problems would definitely not be how well it aged. In fact, it probably aged better than nearly any other game of its time.

yea dont listen to gthat guy, obviously a complete retard,

300k was a huge number back then, only after TBC of WoW did numbers jump,

mainly because of casuals getting in the genre.

which casuals are what ruined the genre, and put MMOs in the direction they are today.

true story

Typical. Sandbox. Elitist.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Several of you mentioned WvW, what exactly is that and what does it consist of? Also, a lot of you mention dungeons, are these like instances? Are they level specific? I take it they require a certain sized group?

World vs World is where three servers have territorial siege battle over a two week period. If you want to avoid all PvP, you won't be interested, but you may find it's worth checking out anyway.

The dungeons are instances. They all have level requirements, but if you enter above the requirement you will be scaled down. The best rewards for any dungeon are actually for players at max level. All of the dungeons are designed for 5 players.

Everything about their moderation is uneven and arbitrary. They might have fixed it, but someone couldn't use "Arbiter of Light" because apparently "bite" is offensive in French.

Then you have people who were denied their headstart because they named a character "Lappdance". I could see changing that one, but a three day ban?

I screencapped a bunch of Reddit posts by ANet demonstrating how terrible their moderation is.

Competitive PvP is not something that killers do. GW2 is a very anti-killer game, with an extreme focus on cooperative gameplay outside of rigid PvP systems. Even WvW presents a weak avenue for killers.

Today, killers are often considered griefers, especially in a PvE-focused environment.
In games like UO and EVE, killing players for fun and profit is a completely valid way of playing the game, and thus not labeled as griefing except by the ones who get buttmad over it.

The test was written for MUDs where each of the four types of players are heavily present. With full PvP enabled, killers roam around to ruin other players' fun; with a vast world of fanciful text, there was plenty for explorers to find that many players never would; with powerful monsters to kill and loot to find, there was a lot for achievers to gain; and with such a daunting game overall, socializers would just use the whole thing as a glorified chat room.

In modern games, systems are in place to prevent players from harming each other without consent, quests guide you across the entire world and directly to the best loot, and you can socialize over Vent with your guild while you play.

The four types still apply in certain ways, but the test is completely irrelevant. It wasn't even written by Richard Bartle.

Combine that with the fact that MoP is WoW's best expansion and you get your answer.

I wish they would let us dye our own Blue and Red Armor set.  Blue armor set could use Purple, Blue and Green Hues while Red armor set could use Yellow, Red and Orange Hues.  There are so many shades of these colors, it sucks to be stuck at only red and blue.

You would have to have a system that requires a certain amount of boxes to be a color or you'd be back in the default red/blue armor set.  I think this could help add diversity and personalization into spvp.

I kind of like this idea.

Something I had in mind was to allow you to change all but the primary color on any armor to any color other than red or blue. The primary color of each piece of armor will always be your team color.

In TF2 you can paint hats many different colors, but special paints (which will change with your team color) are required to paint anything red or blue.

Bro, periods go a long way. If I was ANet I wouldn't want to read your emails either.

As far as I know, the game has a persistent world about as much as Unreal Tournament does.

Is there a quote or something that you're referring to?

I got the chance to try it out. It's still in very early stages in spite of what the Kickstarter led people to believe.

The easiest way to put it is that they don't know what kind of game they want to make. Use of the Unreal Engine is obvious; characters move, jump, and even wall-jump exactly like Unreal Tournament characters. However, it also has a few MMO elements. Unfortunately, not one of these aspects is a good one. Many skills (at least on Pyro) cannot be used without a target. Skills use a global cooldown in addition to individual cooldowns even though they use mana and animation-dependent hit detection. You have 9 skills on your bar at all times, which, frankly, is far too many for such an action-oriented game. There are tank and healer classes. There is a roguish class that can stunlock directly out if stealth. Countless features are included for no reason other than "That's how WoW does it."

They don't seem to realize that, outside of WoW, WoW PvP is not considered good. The result is a mismatch of features that don't really compliment each other very well.

Think of how many MMO accounts have been compromised over the years. Now consider how many people use the exact same login and password for other MMOs and GW2.

The "hackers" already had all of your information before you even made your GW2 account. That's why it was such an easy job.

Just think about how much easier it would be to grief in GW2 compared to other games.

In WoW, how do you grief by going to a lower level friendly zone? You'd have to follow that one guy around, stealing all of his kills. In GW2, you'd simply go to any nearby event and AoE everything before anyone in the area has a chance to attack. Even if you don't get anything back, you've inconvenienced dozens of people with minimal effort. It's just way too easy to grief without downscaling.

Don't forget that quests wait for you, but events do not. A high level player can't ruin your quests. He can only delay them. In GW2, events can be ruined without downscaling because if you're denied the event when it comes up, you'll just have to find another one.

And even without the intention of griefing, players would be powerleveling their friends through low level content, ruining the events (mostly by utterly removing any challenge and therefore fun) of anyone who happens to be nearby.

Right now you would need about 8 gold (35 gems) to buy one bank upgrade. I'm level 30, and I don't think I've seen 8 gold yet.

Um. I have about 3.8 gold right now, and it's enough to buy over a thousand gems. You're reading the graph completely wrong. The average, high, and low values are per 100 gems, not per 1.

There were times I was a bit concerned. I plan to trade most of the money I earn for gems, but looking through the gem store, I honestly don't know what I would buy.

I level so quickly that boosters seem worthless. I think it'll be a long time before I feel like actually playing through a sixth character. With five characters I have loads of storage, and with the way salvaging, depositing, and selling works from anywhere, I don't see inventory space ever becoming a problem.

I guess I could spend gems on... mini pets? Dyes? Maybe I'll buy a pair of glasses or a hat for each of my characters. I'll probably end up getting some fine transmutation stones, although I currently have buckets of the standard ones and not much to use them on. There really just isn't that much to buy right now.

I think most people who are buying gems are doing so just to sell them for gold to give them an early edge in the game, which is keeping gem prices pretty low. Once everyone has loadsamoney, I don't know if anyone will care about gems until they add new costumes.

"I wish game A was more like game B."

Just imagine GW2 has a different name so you can finally get over it being a different game.
It's not too late, and you can get as many as you want. There should be an item in your inventory to take you to the HoM. If it isn't there, just ask around in game. There's a vendor that gives them away for free.
I haven't had any downscaling problems myself, but so much could have been avoided.

ArenaNet refused to have an open beta. Their "stress tests" were conducted at awkward hours, open only to pre-purchasers, and announced very shortly before they happened. This ensured that a tiny percentage of launch players would actually participate in them. As such, services like the Trading Post were completely untested by a high number of players and failed at launch.

There was also little to no account security. Their verification system was disabled for launch because (as we see now) it doesn't work very well. This resulted in countless accounts being compromised at launch. Players who lost their accounts were not contacted but only told that they were permanently banned the next time they tried to log in. If they contacted support (which they were not instructed to do) they'd recover their account when their message was processed.

This unfortunately would take days because of ban-happy moderators. Any and every offense from a questionable name (even if it's borderline sexual or merely has the word "poop" somewhere in it) to profanity in chat (even without any offensive context) to botting received a 3-day ban. Botting? Okay. Exploits? Okay. Naming violation? Not okay. There is no reason to deny a person his headstart because his name was "Lappdance" or "Pimp Juice" or "Batman". People who used names they'd been using for years were receiving 3-day bans. Change their names if you must, but a 3-ban for the first offense on a borderline name? The confusion resulted in their support system getting jammed, and people with very serious problems couldn't get through.

Finally, a lack of official communication has made everything very sloppy. Instead if using their official site, they've been using Reddit as a support forum. Updates were posted to Reddit and Facebook instead of the game launcher. People who were banned received no emails. They were instructed (on Reddit) to post their character name in the thread to find out why they were banned. This is nothing short of unacceptable for a multitude of reasons.

"When it's ready." I'd say that yes, GW2 was ready. Unfortunately, ArenaNet was completely unprepared.
"But alas, I immediately run into one problem. While the opening excites, and the first area is lush with colour and brilliant animation, it immediately doesn't feel like a revolution of the genre, but a refined update."

So you failed your mission to overhype the game in spite of avoiding all information on the game. You managed to avoid even finding out who the developer is, but still expected a revolution.

Maybe one day you'll learn how to form realistic expectations for things. It's really easy, actually. Assume everything the developers say is best case. In other words, don't make things up yourself.
Just so you guys know, since a lot if people miss this, the necromancer isn't a "true" pet class like the ranger. The necro pets are actually only an option, and even if you take them, you can't control them much at all.

Maybe because WoW is gear-based. Maybe GW2 is just a lot more intuitive.

I dunno, bro.
