I understand where your coming from. I want competition in a game, but i dont want to be a competetor to my guild mates or my buddies. I want to compete agianst people i will never see agian. In PVE, i want colaboration to be the main part of the content. I dont want to argue with another player in my guild about he having less DKP than me etc.. I want all players that colaborated the same way that i did to be rewarded on the same line that i will be. With a system like that, the community will be better.

I respect your opinion, and your opinion is very valid. I think we are two players that like different things, but at the same time we want the game to be as best as it can be?

I don't think that has anything to do with the size of the playerbase. WoW is designed in such a way that even PvE is quite competitive in nature. In GW2, ANet's objective is to encourage teamwork and collaboration. While I don't know what Blizzard's actual goals were with WoW's design, ANet's objectives certainly contrast quite strongly with WoW's reality.

I hope that GW2 dosent get an immense playerbase, because with that a lot of theese "wow trolls" come joining along. I want a game with a great community, and desent players that dont sit in the forums yelling at eachother. My time is better spent on playing the game with my friends than standing in Ironforge discussing the loot from last raid.

The idea that trolls come from WoW is a myth. I promise there will be trolls in every game regardless of its relation to WoW. Take Rift. Sure, there were many players from WoW, but I can assure you that the vast majority of players who trolled in zone chat, "This game is a WoW clone," or, "WoW was the first TRUE MMO," or even, "This game sucks. At least WoW takes SKILL," were not actual WoW players. I should know.

Players who leave WoW for other games do so because they're tired of WoW and want something different, not because they want to pay money to ruin the competition.

Oh, and just to add to the discussion, I guess, I think more likely than switching servers is an ordinary queue. He said there's no districting, and switching servers actually sounds a little ridiculous to me. They expect the zone cap to be rarely if ever reached, so a queue seems like the only thing left.

Perhaps if there is a queue, you might be presented with the option of changing servers. That actually sounds very reasonable. Perhaps if your server is overpopulated, you could even switch with no penalty, assuming there normally is one.

With some hunting, I found a beta key giveaway. I just used one of these keys to log onto the NA server. I don't know how many are left.

http://gamers.eurogamer.net/giveaways.php?id=87077

I played this several years ago, and it was pretty neat, but I think they deleted my account from inactivity.

Why? How much space does an account take up? It couldn't possibly be very much at all.

*sigh* Time to make a new one, I suppose. So much for all my Dofus Arena stuff.

EDIT: Apparently, the Open Beta is only for the French version.

Playable rhinos???

Count me in!

I got Asura. Gross. That's the only race I have no interest in playing at all.

A lot of girls play every MMO. A lot of girls play anything that isn't a blatant bro-fest like CoD or Halo, and even those have girls that play them. Most of the time, however, you can't tell what anyone is unless they use a mic, which doesn't happen too often in MMOs unless you join a guild.

Wait.  You got married, like....newly married....and you're looking for a game where you can chat up a bunch of females, pretty much?  Is that what you're saying?  Uhm....are you wanting to actually STAY married?

I can't help but think that this "marriage" was only a virtual one.

The Pay to Chat feature is little more than a way to allow PWE to profit from gold spammers. MapleStory had this feature, too, and it's probably second to none when it comes to bots and spammers.

And I realize that this wasnt covered in his article, but what the hell is wrong with the camera/movement relationship?  WASD movement,  but A and D straffe?WTF?  And there is no way to change it?(to my knowledge) And u have to manually turn the camera with the mouse for every minor turn or else you toon will be facing you.  Total fail in controls.

I'd be surprised if you couldn't change your controls, but WASD movement (with A and D as strafe) is pretty much the way it's played. Using keys to turn is FAR too slow in almost every case, and even if sped up, it doesn't offer the accuracy of a mouse in any circumstance. Most games do not default to this, and it is always the first thing that I and many, many others change. Defaulting to a more practical control scheme is hardly "total fail".

I don't see how people can still complain about the lack of an official forum when the devs seem to be so present in GW2guru. Just look at this page. They seem to be enjoying the atmosphere the site brings.

I don't see how people can still act like dev presence on GW2guru makes any difference. Just look at the posts in this thread. We seem to hate the atmosphere the site moderators bring.

It doesn't make much sense for a guild to restrict characters by race unless you're going to be a roleplaying guild.

And maybe you missed the part where I said "Perhaps the only game I've seen with enough customization to make a non-humanoid character would be DarkSpore....  In spore itself you start with just a cell, and move up to, essentially, a ball of clay. (or a spinal column for that matter).    Everything else is just a different skin."

Essentially they are just reskinned humans.  They decided they didn't want orcs  (green humans with fangs and horns) and wanted more cat like people,  so they made feral Cat Orcs ( brown feline humans).

I don't think you understand what a skin is.

Inherently unreliable huh? So you're telling me that they have the ability to somehow tamper with official blog posts? I have nothing against you personally, but that was just stupid to say. Think before you speak next time.

I think you misunderstand. Fansites aren't an unreliable source of information for players. They are unreliable to the developers.

Fansites tend to cater to a specific type of fan, very often the more hardcore among them. A casual player may post on an official forum because it's easy to find and he already has an account there. A casual player is likely to not even know of an unofficial site, let alone actually make an account there. Most of the users on GW2G have played GW1, and many of them still play. The majority of GW2 players, however, won't even know anything about GW1. I remember this happening during WoW beta: most players hadn't played a Warcraft game before, and many didn't even know they existed. Players with different backgrounds approach games differently and have different reactions to them. A fansite might not give the proper amount of variety.

There is also the the potential for admin abuse, which can and does happen on most fansites, especially GW2G. Official forums may censor their users, but if they do it themselves, at least they know what was said. If the posts on fansites are deleted before the developers even see them, then they may never know what opinion is truly held.

Truth is, you can take 'WOW' and put it in a big 'EQ,' then take 'EQ' and put it in a...

I really wish people would stop saying stupid things like this. WoW is nothing like EQ. They copied almost nothing from them. When someone says WoW is an EQ-clone it becomes clear that they either never played EQ or they simply don't remember anything about it.

If you must call WoW a clone of something then I guess you could say DAoC. In a way, this applies fairly well, because just as WoW's clones never quite get it right, WoW messed up on the factional warfare itself. What they didn't mess up on is marketing and accessibility.

I was just thinking of making a thread just like this one. I wrote nearly all of this post before reading any of the thread, but after getting most of the way through, the post has become a lot more relevant.

The main reason I was going to make this thread is that I really hate GW2Guru and will never make an account there. It's unfortunate that the closest thing we will ever have to official forums is run by fanboys who edit, delete, merge, and lock wantonly throughout the board. And I KNOW that posts get deleted A LOT because I'll very frequently see people quoting posts that no longer exist. Said something negative? Deleted. Having a conversation? Nope, no longer relevant to the OP. Locked. Posting something specific about a class? No, that belongs in the hundred-some-odd page thread specified for that class. Merged if you're lucky. They once even divided a thread in two, resulting in a huge mess that no one could make sense of, and so both topics ended up dying.

Oh, sure, there are several threads where people complain about features they don't understand, but it seems that a negative post can only occur in a negative thread. Anything else would be considered "off topic". Of course, this is only if the thread itself survives.

Speaking of those complaints, I've noticed that the vast majority of people complaining about game mechanics didn't play any MMOs other than GW. ("OMG potions", "no more energy manip? wtf", "You can't change your first 5 skills? LAME!") Representative of GW2's future playerbase? I think not.

I've seen people having ordinary discussions there, then a mod will pop in, tell the OP his thread is pointless, and lock it at the same time.

For a long time, I wondered why everyone was always so nice on that site. It was like a big circle jerk. It was disgusting. Then I eventually realized that all the negative posts were just getting deleted.

That's why I like this site. When people want to bitch, they come out and do it, and if they need to get told, someone tells them. Yeah, posts still get deleted, but when they do, it's pretty obvious why. (You also get a PM about it.)

I know ANet keeps tabs on their various forums, but when someone who just bought the game has something to say (or a question to ask), they need a central place they can go. What are they supposed to do? Search for fansites and pick one?

EDIT: And now that I've finished reading the thread, I see that this has pretty much all been mentioned already. :\ Oh well...

Would be cool to have a DE to use a cattle prod to chase the cattle OUT of the barn in a thunderstorm though. (Unless they mastered the art of diverting lightning strikes, that is, hehe).

Well, most of their stuff is made of metal, so they probably already have lightning rods all over the place.

Entertainment doesn't come easy in a sandbox, you have to figure out what it is you want, and go look for it. Exploring is a huge part of it because there's a lot of open space put to minimalistic use. What this means, though, is that when you finally do find the one fox in the square mile you've traversed, it's going to be worth the investment. Working hard for something heightens the sense of reward, and the general rarity of events like that means more value out of any actual monetary rewards. If it took you that long to get a fox pelt, imagine what it is worth to someone else.

That's not really an accurate description of what it means to be a sandbox. Sandbox games are called such because of the freedom you get, not the difficulty of accomplishment. What you described can just as easily describe a themepark game.

Fact is with any software project, the larger they get, the riskier they become and the likelyhood of failure can go skyrocketing.  So MMORPG's have to balance builiding enough content to be worthy of purchase, without becoming so large (at least intitally) that they can't get off the ground (see Vanguard)

Um, Vanguard wasnt actually too large, it simply was planned big AAA - and then suddenly, thanks to a management change at Microsoft, all funding got cut off.

And then they had to use the rest of their money to buy their own IP back so they could at least attempt to continue development.

Calling Global Agenda repetitive is like calling TF2 repetitive. Surprise, guys! If you don't like shooters, you won't like this. I thoroughly enjoyed TF2, and I thoroughly enjoy GA. Yeah, all I do is play merc match after merc match, but each one is fun. You can bitch about team imbalance all day, but such is the way teams go in any game. You take a bunch of players, divide them into two groups, and lo and behold, one team is going to have an average skill-level higher than the other. At least GA does a good job of making sure the class distribution is even between the two teams, a simple thing when the game only has one faction.

EDIT: Also this:

Maybe it's because I found GA after it went B2P but the lack of "content" doesn't bother me. I've been playing online FPS' since Quake1 CTF was uber-popular back in the mid 90s so I suppose I'm used to repetetiveness. I dunno, I'm not saying that I wouldn't mind more maps/content/wtfever you want to call it but hell... I paid seven dollars and fifty cents for this game and I feel that I've got my monies worth and my highest char is only in the mid 30s. *shrug* To each their own as always.

A million times, this. It's a shooter, guys. You don't need "content". Go play any of the billion quest-based MMO's if you need the game to explicitly tell you that you're progressing to feel like you're accomplishing anything. I never heard anyone complain about the lack of content in Quake, UT, CS, or TF2 before, so... what makes this different exactly?
