To this day I've never seen a developer succeed when they make such black and white distinctions between "theme park" and "sandbox" games. The ones that do, without fail, tout their game as a "sandbox" and claim that this makes them inherently superior to "theme park" games.

He's doing exactly that when he boldly (and unfoundedly) proclaims the death of the theme park genre and when he says that sandbox games are built for the long term while theme park games are not.

He states quite plainly that because of the self-evident superiority of sandbox games, it isn't necessary for Pathfinder Online to even launch with all of it's features.

Pathfinder Online may or may not be a good game, but he's off to a very bad start with all his big talk.
I'd be very surprised if even HALF of the people who voted for Pirate 101 ever even so much as read a single thing about it.

The wording on the polls might as well be inverted. Knowing this site, Pirate 101 doesn't have the most fans. It has the least haters. It's blatantly obvious that people voted for it IN SPITE of GW2 because there really wasn't any real competition.

Not saying P101 isn't good. I wouldn't know as I haven't played it, but you know the hate train jumped on it as soon as they saw it standing a chance. Either that or someone cheated. That's right. I said it.

I don't think people saying things like WoW, GW2, EVE, and even SWTOR read the question properly.

It asks what the worst game you've ever played is. It has nothing to do with your least favorite. "Worst" and "least favorite" are not interchangeable.

For example, someone could have played something like Ragnarok Online, agreed that it was a horrible game, but still enjoyed it. Someone might feel pretty strongly that Rift was not fun for them, but acknowledge that it attempted a lot of new things and was very polished.

The worst MMO I've ever played?

I might be able to say Mortal Online, but I never actually made it out of character creation because it ran so badly and none of the settings even worked, so I don't want to include it as something I actually played.

FF14 was also remarkably bad in practically every aspect, but at least it looked nice.

The worst game is going to have to be something even worse than Maple Story. Worse than Runescape. Worse than Conquer Online.

There was a little game someone cobbled together out of stolen sprites and music and managed to list on this site years ago. I don't remember the name, but it might have been the worst. At the same time, it was essentially someone's pet project, so it's sort of unfair to count it here.

Rubies of Eventide might be the worst. It was one of the earliest free-to-play games. I didn't get very far at all, but I remember the movement being so wonky that you would slide all over the place and none of your animations synced up properly. I think it might have been either classless or let you mix skills to make a class or something. Actually, I think you chose a class, but the classes were nothing more than skill packages. In any case I remember that it was very confusing. I don't think I saw another player the entire time I was online.

To be innovative you have to be the first with a new thing and not years late with something old.

But that's wrong.

SOE is localizing this? I actually want to follow it now just to see what the P2W threshold is.
For the OP, conspiracy threads aren't allowed. Plain and simple.

For most infractions, however, it's the result of outsourcing their moderation to non-English-speaking countries. You can see a lot of awkward wording if you look for it, in particular the repeated "We proceed now to lock the thread."

They have a lot of trouble understanding the context of posts. Generally, if you quote someone, they assume you're being aggressive. If your post contains even a simple "I disagree," you could get an infraction. The thing is, their moderation is also inconsistent, so you pretty much take your chances every time you address another user in any way.
"LFM FotM Infusion 76 or higher ONLY"

You can expect to see things like in Lion's Arch from now on. If any one piece of content gives superior rewards, however slightly better, it's the only content anyone will do, so yes, this will affect the entire playerbase. It is not "purely optional".

I really wanted to like this game, but the grind is the worst I've seen in an MMO. Salem is a good example of why you should never try and make a game mechanic too much like its real-world counterpart.

In this case they actually made it more complicated than it is in real life. If only it was as simple as in the real world.

I was interested in this game till I read the words Permadeath. "Crafting centric" mmo and Permadeath are total opposites of each other. This game makes no sense.

How do you figure that? Minecraft is one of the most crafting-centric games there is and features what is essentially permadeath, FFA PvP, and even full loot.

The problem isn't that the game has permadeath and crafting. The problem is the game is nothing but a gargantuan convoluted grind... with permadeath.

People complaining about not being able to reach keys 7-0, you must have a lot of complaints in day-to-day life about things you couldn't be bothered to configure.

Is the seat in your car too close or too far from the wheel? Are you annoyed that you can only microwave things in intervals of 30 seconds? Is it a pain that the color or orientation of your monitor is off? Do you have trouble reaching those keys on your keyboard that are too far from WASD?
Other than stat-less weapon skins and town clothes, one of the best items you could get was Mad Memories: Complete Edition. The only way to get it is by completing both parts of the scavenger hunt. Nothing in the gem store can even help you get it. I worked a couple days to get it, and it was very worth it, with very good stats for a back items and flames that act as a light source for when I don't have a torch with me.

People who complain about being nickel and dimed probably didn't even play a single one of the events. Most of them probably didn't even log on.

Boring. :( Give me server with open world pvp or let ppl turn on/off pvp option in open world or at least give me duels than we can talk about game getting interesting again for me.

That's like asking for a PvE server in Planetside 2 or complaining that there's no friendly fire in Team Fortress 2. It won't work. It can't work. It will never happen. If it's a deal breaker for you, stop complaining and go elsewhere.

Duels will probably be included at some point, but if the game is boring to you without them, you should probably go elsewhere anyway.

Andy Velasquez: Foundry authors can certainly chain quests together into epic campaigns. However, we will not restrict access to later quests in any given campaign based on requirements to complete earlier quests. That’s because we want to allow users to explore Foundry content on their own terms, as freely as possible.

Think of it like an approach to buying a season of a TV show on DVD. While most people will start from episode one and watch the following episodes consecutively, there may be others who want to skip to episode 10, for example, because that was the “good one.”

That being said, within a given quest, the Foundry author can be more restrictive and have NPCs only offer players certain dialogue options or only open doors based on whether or not a monster has been killed, an item has been collected, etc. So that element of control and direction from the author’s perspective will be available.

If I'm making a campaign, wouldn't gating my content be the desired result? I don't want people skipping to "the good part". If people don't want to play through the first few missions, then they don't play my missions, I don't get hits, and I look bad as a creator. It should be my job to make sure the entire campaign is fun. You know, just like real developers.

If you can't restrict access to missions or even store variables between them, then that part about "chaining" quests together isn't entirely true. There is nothing that links them at all other than the author putting "Part I" and Part II" in the title or possibly specifying a recommended order. You can't actually chain quests together. You can only imagine that they're chained.

EDIT: I just watched the video. I like what I see. You could almost make an entire campaign in a single mission, although I doubt you'd be able to put save points or really make it long enough.

Any website that runs ads for products it reviews already can't be trusted. It's a conflict of interest. You're reviewing the products of the people paying your bills. There's an incentive (whether acted upon or not) to bias the reviews. Moreover, you have to consider that companies are less likely to provide exclusive content to websites that review them unfavorably.

It can't be said if this site intentionally skews its reviews, but the incentive is there. At least it's not GameStop where they don't even try to hide it.

This "partnership" is irrelevant.

I recall the trailer. It's blatantly pay to win. If you die, you can pay real money to improve your chance to rez. That's how their "permadeath" system actually works. The higher your level, the more inclined you'll be to cough up some dough, knowing what you will lose if you don't.

I will absolutely not be following this one.
Newmoon, if you read the thread (and the mod's post), you can see the problem is his English. Just look at his formatting. He ends his post with "Greetings", fails to capitalize sentences, places commas where they don't belong, and I'm not sure what he meant by "shorts". The overall phrasing is just awkward. Maybe people are too used to awful English on this site to notice, but it's far below what is expected of a professional.

That thread was deleted because there are dozens exactly like it, but their moderation is outsourced, and it's obvious. Just take a look at this mod's amazing English skills: https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/gw2/Bizarre-Name-Restriction/first#post493033.

Hello everyone,

it’s quite interesting how you wonder why words/shorts aren’t edited by the filter while others are. Does that mean you want those words to be filtered, too? Feel free to suggest some, then.

Greetings

The thread was asking (quite clearly) why the name "Frostbite" was blocked.

Arbitrary locks and bans (without reasons given) are the result of their staff's inability to comprehend what they're attempting to moderate.

I'm pretty sure WoW subscribers are diminishing along with the hardcore feel. To say that one style ruins the other is naive. Both are required for a strong game, which exactly why WoW did so well so long while "hardcore only" and "casual only" games flounder.

Tried it on and off for a long while but every time the UI and combat puts me of... and I hate scammers which seems to run rampant in that game.

Scammers are a part of the game in EVE. They're another type of enemy you have to watch out for. They don't have players like that in Darkfall?

And honestly, Tera? If you like games like Darkfall and UO, I can understand you not liking GW2, but Tera? Pffff, okay.

And you're seriously butthurt because ArenaNet are making money off of the gem store? If this puts you off, you're going to have a very hard time playing anything at all very soon. Microtransactions are the replacement for subscriptions. Subscriptions are dead. Pathfinder Online is using microtransactions instead of subs, too, you know, and it's the "next big" sandbox game. Gonna skip it?

Calling something the "fast food equivalent" of anything would be considered bashing it.

It was awesome the first few years, but it hasn't aged well.

I only played EVE very briefly, and I could name a few surface problems with it, but one of those problems would definitely not be how well it aged. In fact, it probably aged better than nearly any other game of its time.

mainly because of casuals getting in the genre.

which casuals are what ruined the genre, and put MMOs in the direction they are today.

Typical. Sandbox. Elitist.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Several of you mentioned WvW, what exactly is that and what does it consist of? Also, a lot of you mention dungeons, are these like instances? Are they level specific? I take it they require a certain sized group?

World vs World is where three servers have territorial siege battle over a two week period. If you want to avoid all PvP, you won't be interested, but you may find it's worth checking out anyway.

The dungeons are instances. They all have level requirements, but if you enter above the requirement you will be scaled down. The best rewards for any dungeon are actually for players at max level. All of the dungeons are designed for 5 players.
