yeah Ciredic is correct, Daoc was more like a 2.5 year development cycle, and eve I cannot imagine going into development for 6 years, they would have had to start developing it back during uo's hayday before EQ cause it came out quite a while ago. No doubt about it Darkfall is taking longer to develop than any mmo in history that I can think of and I've tried and followed most of them. However you also have to take into account a revamp and the fact that a game of this magnitude has never been made before. They are not following a well beaten path or cloning any exsisting games out there, also they are I believe using thier own engine. Taking all of what it's promised into account, it MUST deliver or suffer the worst witch hunt in all of mmo history for as long as they've made players wait and for all that has been promised. The features list would make the largest of companies cringe and turn in thier graves, it's a HUGE task and if it's pulled off would be a miracle. From player driven economy, crafting towns, naval warfare, real time combat and environments, mounted combat, full blown pvp, realistic damage and blood, it goes on and on and on. I think the dev's know the beast they are tackling and want it to come out right, these guys are gamers that had a vision and so far it's progressing, they just don't want to jump the gun and bring it out with broken promises. however even if it delivers on HALF of what it promises, it will still be TWICE the game most of this other cloned crap is. On the other hand it also just might be too large and lofty in scope and never get finished, that also is entirely possible. |

Demand for Asheron's Call redevelopment and relaunch.
The Tavern (General) « Asheron's Call 4/10/07 1:48:28 AM
Problem is AC needs more than a graphics update, it needs an entire new engine, which would mean reworking all character and world models, all weapons all physics all stats.. basically remaking the same game in a new engine which would be just as much or more work than making an entire new game, it's never going to happen.
It needs a new combat system more akin to a revamped AC2 combat. AC was my favorite mmo of all time, hell I was there before we even had a secure trading method and people would just set items on the ground in arwic to inspect before trading just to make sure the person wasn't trying to hustle you. However an asheron's call graphic update to the degree you want won't happen, anybody with any design or moderate computer knowledge should know this already. What it needs is a true sequel, If AC2 had been true to the original spirit of the game.. Open ended character development, large content filled world, quests and mysterious rich lore to discover... It would have been a hit, instead it focused on getting released far before it had any content.. class based gameplay then the rest of it's entire development cycle focused on balance and nerfs even before a half assed ammount of content was added. The landmasses were TINY and there was nothing in em, I was stuck on that barren wasteland of high end content after the third week of release, I felt like I was exiled and being punished for leveling too fast. There was no spirit of asherons call in it's lame sequel, even that being said I did have the second most fun of any mmo in that world too. Maybe with the money turbine gets from butchering the two huge ip's it some how won the rights to it will return to it's roots and do it up right. One could hope an asheron's call reborn, or AC3? Last problem you face is Turbine has lost pretty much any good image it once had, what with releasing an expansion months before killing AC2, bringing out the worst dungeon's and dragon's game in history... and now the bland as hell LORTO.. personally even me a huge AC fan would have to see a trial before believing they'd do something right ever.. |

Graphics were worse than wow's on release?! that's news to me.. for one the graphics look the same as they always have and I've never heard bad things about the graphics.. when it was released it was waaaaay ahead of it's time in terms of shaders, texture depth and lighting.. when wow came out graphics where the ONE thing hardly ANYBODY liked about it.
I just don't get it... how can these reviewers be so retarded, your going to lose your reader base by publishing this crap. not going to get into the other inconsistencies.... yeah been out longer than 2 years I believe.. just looks like another paid off review, why not just sell larger BANNERS intead of printing this biased shite. |

Well thanks for the posts guys, saved me from having to bother with another half arsed game.
I never trust mmorpg.com reviews... so far from the ratings I've seen on the site and the unprofessionalism displayed by most of the writers it's unreliable at best. to bad I love rts games and mmo games, maybe one day someone will pull off a good hybrid. Of course I usually don't trust the community either, always extremes one way or the other, but there's enough consistancy here to see know the truth when I see it. In short obviously Deamlords fails to deliver. |

Heh aside from the guildwars part it could be me writing the original post here... I'm in the same boat, I think WoW has one of the most bland worlds and lore out there, bland community and bland leveling grinds... however when I did reach 60 the pvp well.. it did captivate me I pvped ALL the time and loved it.
I must say the one thing WoW does better than any mmo I've played yet is fantastic gameplay, the mechanics of the game are very well done. People say that Wow pvp is totally gear based which gear does come into play however I'd say gear matter less in Wow than any other mmo ever made. Show me another where I can repeatedly get to the top of kills in a battle ground running around naked, won't happen. However I'm sick of running 3 bg's all day, and I don't care for most of the community in Wow the general chat and chat in the battlegrounds makes me want to stab my eyes out with a rusty fork. Even the roleplaying servers you can't find one mature player most of the time. Daoc would be a good choice but it's combat honestly feels incredibly dated to me, not to mention that dex speed casting ruels them all and a few casters can wipe out whole armies if exploited right. (this is the way it used to be at least I don't know abou tcurrently) Darkfall I think is our best bet out of the new games comming out for decent pvp, and then Warhammer Online after that, honestly I don't think there's anything else out there to scratch the itch until then besides Wow which,, well makes me a bit sad. |

Consumer Protection against Fraud
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 1/11/07 10:53:21 AM
While I would agree with you about the Archlord system, it was not even yet implemented in the Asian counterpart of the game yet which had been out for a full year. A game that's out a year and still doesn't have the basis of the entire game implimented (the freaking game's name for crying out loud) shouldn't be touting it as a feature on the box.
Wow didn't have most of it's raid instances or battlegrounds implemented when it was released either however it wasn't put on the box advertised as one of the major reasons to purchase the game. It doesn't matter if anyone would be at the level to use the feature or not, if it's not in the game you cannot say it is otherwise it's fraud, simple plain and true. What you stated was your opinion and excuse for a company defrauding it's playerbase and is part of the entire problem, apathy and acceptance of unaceptable buisness practices. Furthermore this isn't about your individual games and defending just those I listed I could list 10 more easily that have carried out similar practices, it's that it's accepted at all and allowed to continue that is the problem. Almost all Computer games comming out these days suffer from this in one form or the other, think about it, if someone didn't have the internet they wouldn't even be able to play computer games at all anymore because 9 times out of ten they are finished in patches. It's sloppy and bad buisness and it is we who suffer for it, every time you make an excuse for a Company you are supporting your own victimization. |

So essentially all we need is an Erin Brocovitch for Gamers lol.

Anyone else tired of shelling out 50 bucks on a new game, getting home and finding out your playing a beta or the game is completely unplayable? There's a common trend by developers lately of taking advantage of thier customers, seems like everytime I buy a Computer game anymore I feel swindled. The list of games is too numerous to count but I'll give a few examples, NWN 2 didn't even have multiplayer working whenI purchased it worked on very few to no systems how does a game completely made on multiplayer even get released like that. Gothic 3 which I've been looking forward to for years comes out and even tho I'm well above the system requirements flickers so bad it's unplayable and this phenomenon happens on all but few lucky configurations. Even if they tested the game on two different rigs the problems would have been known... so why is it on the store shelves waiting for me to buy it. Most MMO's come in VERY unfinished states, look at Archlord, it didn't even have the features implimented in the game at release that was mentioned ON THE BOX..that's called Fraud, it's dishonest and illegal so why not only are these practices allowed but COMMON PLACE. Because there is nothing we can do about it, if you try to take a game back that is obviously not working or renegs on it's promises of features you will just be told that the store does not accept such items back. If a company has insecure billing and doesn't own up to it's actions like Horizons what can you do about it but cancel your credit card? There is a huge breech of customer faith taking place on a daily basis in this industry and it needs to be stopped, if a product is released unfinished and in a fraudulent state, then it should at the VERY least be returnable. Companies getting all thier products shoved back in thier faces after a while would start to think twice about going for the quick release date and lying to thier community. I for one am fracking sick of it and the only thing these people understand is money or the loss of it. I understand why buisnesses do not allow computer game returns, it's protecton for Developers against piracy.. however I think the consumer base needs protection as well and obviously there are more victims on this side of the story. |

that's the basis of your rebuttle? Yes lindens CAN be bought with RL money and a hefty portion of the economy is based off that, however my entire point was that Secondlife doesn't need an economy period. And if you wish to own land, yes your going to be spending alot of RL money on it. If you want a sim, your looking at a 1600 dollar that's real dollar start up fee then over 200 a month in tier charges. |

Casual Play Column: Raiding Needs to Die
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/16/06 1:31:03 PM
I also think it's funny how companies claim to be trying to cater to a more causual crowd, or put little warnings on thier games to take breaks after playing for periods of time.. yet don't reward any of this behavior when all indicators show, they constantly reward obsessive behavior and punish those who take things in moderation.
Nothing is more annoying than seeing that screen that says remember to take all things in moderaton even World of warcraft but the only people who have gear to compete truly in pvp are the ones who don't take it in moderation because the entire game mechanic is made for the truly addicted. It's like being a drug dealer and then saying what a shame it is that all these people are addicted to drugs. |

Casual Play Column: Raiding Needs to Die
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/16/06 12:48:33 PM
I couldn't agree more with this.
I am a fairly hardcore mmo player, however I still play for fun even if I have the time to devote to a game doesn't mean I want my time wasted on pointless loot waiting 3 months to get a new pair of socks. I think the entire idea of raiding and it's rewards are boring and mindumbing.... Why OOOHH why would I want to run through the same exact content over and over and over again.. easy answer I don't and I pay for it in WoW every day I come across others in thier tier 3 armor on my battle group. luckily you can still win in pvp in wow with skill however gear makes a HUGE difference and most MMO's gear is absolutely everything. just waiting on Darkfall don't let my down you bastard. |

Thinking of buying EQ2 just a few questions
The Tavern (General) « Everquest II 12/05/06 1:35:51 AM
EQ2 is a quality game, if you decide to try it out comming from FFXI I think you'll be happy with it.
a controller? lol the only reason you could use a controller with FFXI was because even at max level you had a laughable amount of skills.. no sorry you'll get more than 4 buttons to push with EQII. |

I don't see why anyone expected more from this. All these asian based games are usually in the box grind fests completely lacking any depth what so ever.
Sure there are always exceptions to the ruel, however I haven't seen one yet. I played and enjoyed lineage 2 for quite a while, however it definetly goes into this catagorey as well and honestly couldn't tell you why I liked it at the time so much. I'm hoping that 2moons combat will be as awesome as it looks tho, however for the game itself I'm sure it will be another mindless grind fest too. |
|
|
Yeah your right it was an early vid, I'm definetly going to try the game... the more I read about it the more I look forward to trying it out. The animations I was referring to btw were the combat animations.. the sword swings and contact hits were pretty lackluckster. However most mmo's are in that regaurd. 2moons and Cabal online are first two I've seen with good looking combat (however the games themselves will be nothing compared to the depth of this one)
and to the guy who asked me if I'd ever played an mmo before.. lol.. yes far far far too many.. bout the only one on this site I at least haven't downloaded and tried would be Eve. |

I occasionaly pop back in secondlife to check up on old friends and see how the game has progressed.
However the truth of secondlife is that it's a glaring reminder of how little imagination our socities have in them.. here you have a world where you can literally make anything.. ANYTHING.. be anything and do anything... Here is a world that could be forged from the imaginations of a people into limitless different worlds and socities... whole new ways people could interact. What Is secondlife? It's filled with stripmalls, sexclubs and casinos... EVERYWHERE.. that's what it ammounts to. It's not secondlife's fault either... it also completely revolves around money, everything costs money, and it's real money too... WHY!? why the hell when you have a world where anything could happy would you base it off of money .. you already have to deal with that crap in RL, now in two worlds... just sad and limited. I think the main problem with that is, most of the players are VERY mature bordering on old and have lost alot of what imagination they had while conforming to the world. Raise a family, work your ass off and spend your money on meaningless garbage IN TWO WORLDS NOW yeppie skippy! |

I went from super excited about his game (I've been waiting for a real pvp game to be made since I started playing these games) to super suspicious of it's quality.
All the features listed sound like the devs have all played mmo games extensively and got tired of the same lame tacked on pvp in every game.....however that being said. HAve you guys actually looked at the combat... what little I saw in the official video looked AWFUL... choppy animations no skill use... the engine just looks like one of those engines that's always going to run kinda bad and be full of bugs and considering how long it's taken to develop... these devs just don't ahve the speed to fix bugs and optimise as needed I'm guessing (I said I'm guessing)... just got that feeling. Even so I'll give the game a fair shake, but the combat looks to be a real let down just like DDO's "amazing realtime combat" that turned out to be a total joke. |

Darkfall: Interview with Tasos Flambouras
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/01/06 5:37:40 AM
looking at the screens tho you can already tell it's dated, I'm downlaoding a vid now but I can just tell by the way some of the characters stand it's going to have some bad animation. Which is one big flaw for taking so long in development.
However hopefully the rest of the content is actually implemented and will make up for it's rather dated engine. Gameplay always wins over flash. Animation however is pretty key in my book for how I ike combat, I don't care if the textures are so so or the models a little clunky but if my guy swings his sword like someone who's never held a weapon before I won't be happy. |
