Primarily, that's the development team's attempt to ensure that people can't create elaborately complex names capable of rendering other players incapable of reporting them. For example, if you have lllIIII'l";'llllII'"':) cheating through some sort of program and murdering your face...it's going to be difficult for you to report them.

What I hate is the inability to use a name that someone else has taken. There are duplicate names throughout every culture, it's time we stop limiting people's ability to take the name they want and simply assign them numbers like Blizzard does.

If I want to be Tenebrae and 700 others have that name too, well so be it.

There has got to be an easy way to do this and make it work, danging.

That argument is invalid with since like 1999 man, in most games you can right click on a name in Chat, or bring up a list of recently played with/saw users fairly easily.

I can't think of a good reason not to allow 1 of - or ' in a name besides the fact that inpersonating becomes easier if you are trying to fool stupid/idiots/morans, ect.

It is a shame new generations will never be able to play Everquest or World of Warcraft as they were originally and arguably to some better than the current versions. MMOs drastically change from expansion to expansion, unlike standalone games such as Zelda where my 9 year old son can still enjoy the way it was intended. I will note and he does!

It is similar to making work of arts such as a sculpture from Michael Angelo and over the years rip an arm off, add a gun, remove the head in place for another head etc. I find that sad because I consider some of these original MMOs work of arts lost forever.

I feel developers when expanding upon their game should leave one server behind with the original game on it for those who want to enjoy the game in that state. When another expansion is released leave one more server available with the game + 1 expansion, and so on and so on. The developers could make money with this design scheme. Players who decide to play on these servers could pay to transfer off of them once they decide to and venture on to the next version of the game, be it live or another legacy server.

The developer could even charge a gold membership for access to the live game and the legacy servers. This would allow people to enjoy the game at different times in history with the option to move to live when you choose of course with a cost.

I haven't played live WoW or EQ in about 5 years now I believe because I didn't like the current version of the game. If this design scheme was in place, I would be there playing now and you know what? Would probably have a live character as well to play around with.

Games like EQ1/AC/ [mod edit] are very different still because the community has changed, no longer is it mainly RP/paper D&D communities/LARPers/Nerds, player base is now filled with all sorts of people that generally ruin communities in my opinion, this happened because of advertising to the general public really, and started with Sony's TV advertisements/Blizzards TV advertisements, brought in all sorts of people...

It looks pretty good as to what should be standard by now. I'm glad they're not skimping on this.

I'm trying to remember what other mmo has that triangle body shape mechanism. I remember thinking that was pretty slick.

Beast races being humans with animal heads and tails and every race using the same base skeleton (and in effect the same exact animations) is the very definition of skimping in my opinion. The last big game that got that lazy didn't fare so well.

Yea, this game is going to flop hard, in the day and age of mass consumer themeparks, you better atleast get the Lore right to keep your dedicated ES fans, aka how SWTOR is still surviving ( the stories are pretty good ).

everyone will just flock back to WOW once they do 30 day trial,  because most of there friends/relatives still playing WoW, so might as well just play that if your going to play a themepark, not to mention Gw2 buy to play is most peoples back ups.

What has changed inside Bethesda ever since Daggerfall/Marrowwind they have not released a good standalone game?

This is a joke right? This is the same same depth that almost every other mmorpg provides. Ps, are they still making Dark Elves and Bretons faction? Whoever owns the Elder Scrolls series has been making shit games since Oblivion/Skyrim/F3/FNV, all these needed 1000's of user modification to make into a real ES game, I can't imagine what type of joke the Online version is going to be, and I am very disappointed. Starwars IP ruined by SWTOR and now ES ruined by ESO, man I fucking hate these developers making lore and games that could have been good into themepark shitters.

I really don't think darkfall has ever been worth playing, the production quality has just always seemed really low.

I love the idea of it though, so if the game gets some major polish and overhauling i might try to play a third time.

Currently I'd rather play a game that doesn't have tedious tasks, aka Chivalry : Medieval Warfare, over a game where I have to grind for 1 to 2 months DF/AC1, honestly. I mean it used to be fine to start low level and work your way up, but when everybody is sitting on the top, waiting for you, I'd rather just be insta-max level, geared, and then do cool fun puzzles and quests, and player & enviroment vs player and enviroments, and exploring at cap, because there is nobody but yourself on the bottom working up.

Is it f2p yet?   If not, I'll pass.

You do realize that F2P is only a bait and hook tactic with every single AA-MMOG currently out? there are some Pure F2P games like Haven and Hearth, and Tribes, EQ P99, SWG Emulators, and other indie companies that might do F2P without deception tactics. And wow, awesome comparative example Tangent.

After reading some "Claus stuff", I'm thinking this is the only guy that actually played Asheron's Call 1.

he understands that a quest that you pick up from an exclamation mark, and leads you with a overlay red line, is BORING. I'd rather get a piece of paper  I read and figure out various clues to finish a quest,

I'd rather do 2 hour long puzzle/thinking quest, then 40 repetitive wow style quests anyday!

FF ARR is by far the most fun mmo on the current market.
Great comminuty, traditional mmo, healer ! tank !
Overal this game has it all :)

Not sure what you mean by "traditional", but free form classless systems are more "traditional" in my eyes.

The only reason Classes were implemented in some mmorpgs, is generally because the developers are to lazy to balance there game properly around such a cool idea as actually BUILDING AND CUSTOMIZING YOUR CHARACTER ( RPG ).

Congratulations on predicting a game that has been dying for 4 years would shut down!  On a side note, I predict every mmo will eventually close!

Having played DF in beta, launch, and sometime there-after, I fear for it if they are bringing back an 'original' dev.  I just remember thinking, "this is what took 8+ years to make? A poorly recreated Shadowbane clone with updated combat", and numerous: 'insert Greek financial crisis jokes', since it launched around that time.

Cheers!

Asheron's Call 1 has been around 17+ years, and was originally developed out of a small house by a team of friends, total original development time was 40 monthes and 8 monthes of beta.

the only reason it didn't boom is because they released at the same time has Sony's EQ1, and every knows the advertising power of Sony.

Check out the AC wiki below, it was so much better of a game then EQ1, just wrong place, wrong time.

Elder scrolls can't even get the Lore correct, I highly doubt they are going to do anything meaningfull or innovative, or polished with PvP.

Ever since whoever had been developing the TES series since Oblivion and Skyrim, has made a complete joke and piece of crap, both those Single player games, were tiny, very tiny and restrictive like a themepark compared to the original TES games, not to mention they took hundreds of hours of modding to make Oblivion/Skyrim/Fallout3/New vegas even fun or playable.

F2P, not so much, if you pay for a subscription, this game is great.

PS, SWTOR F2P vs LOTRO F2P

~ Lotro wins hands down, in Swtor you have to pay for even the fracking hotbars so you can set up your abilities on your bars in a proper organized format

Check out these links, SWTOR F2P is HIGHLY LIMITED and GAME BREAKING, not even trolling SWTOR, I actually have a paid subscription currently to both swtor and Lotro.

See this player had a queue.

FF XIV is the WoW killer confirmed.

jk

It does serve as an example of how a game that doesn't appeal to everyone can still be incredibly popular and also be successful.

One thing I am absolutely convinced of. Most posters at mmorpg.com have no clue. This forum is so far out of touch with the majority of the MMORPG world it's really a joke. I won't even exclude myself from that.

Most the 'vocal' minority that chats on here, besides the few good eggs you'll find eventually, are very full of bullshit & ignorance, and are just spewing hate/fanboyism, & plain out trolling [mod edit]

Alot of the community here is from old games and they are searching, generally in vain, for something to fill the void, and they don't usually have 10k postcounts, anyone with mass amounts of posts is 99% of the time one of the Bad eggs, and 1% a OG fighting in vain trying to convince people that old school games actually kicked ass and had more depth and content.

And just guessing, but I'm guessing out of the whole viewers of MMORPG.com, only 10% of them actually take part in the posting.

I like your ideas and train of thought OP, +1 for constructive ideas and help in furthering a game you love!

This thread isn't really about calling anything. If you look around you will see the OP just wants to advertise Darkfall because his fav dev rejoined the team.

I believe he is just venting his thoughts on what he will play for PvP, that's why I posted my suggestions about DAOC and Chivalry : Medieval Warfare.

Thoughts on DF since it appears the two posters above me want to make this a Darkfall discussion...

I havn't played DF1 or UW yet, but I've heard from a few vets that it's actually doing alot better, they reduced the grind, and added some sort of prestige levels ( that are still balanced for newbies to be competitive ), and broke the skills into classes and changed the way Transfer spells work..

The only negative things I have heard about it are that Warriors are the only ones who get a fast movement ability like "bunny hopping", which can make them quite tough and obnoxiously living if they choose to run and heal, pepper with arrows, run and heal, swing weapons, don heavy armor, ect.

Community,

some games implement this in a great, great way, for me Asheron's Call.

some games you play for the community even without a great system, for me WoW.

Ps, the only community aspect of WoW that really draws me in is the fact that many of my relatives play it, and it's fairly simple to teach time constrained newbie, unlike AC/EVE/DAOC/SWG, ect.

Also you could give Chivalry : Medieval Warfare

Besiege castles and raid villages in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, a fast-paced medieval FPS (Slasher with a Multi-player online focus) Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a first-person slasher with a focus on multi-player. Featuring competitive online combat that seeks to capture the experience of truly being on a medieval battlefield.

Siege tutorial, general overview

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNmSdjuHejU

In game footage, not much siege weapon action in this video, mainly personal combat, if you search around you can find some though

Daoc might be up your ally, if you can get used to the interface and making binds it actually becomes second nature and not much of a burden. Ps, I'd go with Vampires for your first character, pretty good at solo - has health regenerating properties, increased movement speed and other nifty tricks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=XcGvK3Vly3w

Daoc little video of the Realm vs Realm

3 realms, each fighting against each other, if one gets to strong, generally 2 weak ones will work in temporary alliance to bring them down, goes back and forth.

Realm vs. Realm

Realm versus Realm is the main focus of Dark Age of Camelot. The storyline revolves around what happens after the death of King Arthur and his united kingdom falling apart. Albion, Hibernia, and Midgard are in a three way war against each other and constantly war for control of powerful relics, keeps and towers, as well as control of the entrance to Darkness Falls.

Although each realm's classes differ in specific abilities, DAoC's classes are broken down into the four common RPG archetypes: warrior 'tanks', spell casters, rogues that use stealth, and healing priests. Hybrid classes, which combine skills from any two of the archetypes, also exist in all 3 realms. DAoC's classes are balanced at the RvR level instead of in direct comparison to the other realms' equivalent classes. DAoC classes are very rigid with specific roles, play styles, and specialization point allocations.

Albion: Armsman, Cabalist, Cleric, Friar, Heretic, Infiltrator, Mauler, Mercenary, Minstrel, Necromancer, Paladin, Reaver, Scout, Sorcerer, Theurgist, and Wizard.

Hibernia: Animist, Bainshee, Bard, Blademaster, Champion, Druid, Eldritch, Enchanter, Hero, Mauler, Mentalist, Nightshade, Ranger, Warden, Valewalker, and Vampiir.

Midgard: Berserker, Bonedancer, Healer, Hunter, Mauler, Runemaster, Savage, Shadowblade, Shaman, Skald, Spiritmaster, Thane, Valkyrie, Warlock, and Warrior.

In my case the reasons are very diverse.. But allways something irritating me and preventing  me to have fun.

UO - just could not stand the top/down view

AC - EQ was more fun

EQ - Spawn camping

DAOC - expansion forced PvE grinding

EQ2 - WoW beta was more fun.

EQ2 2 nd time - hard to find groups.

WoW -  vanilla raiding was to timeconsuming

WoW 2 nd time - there was no challenge left

GW - finished the storie based content

Lotro -  combat annimations feeling unnatural and not fluent

Vanguard - worst annimations.

AoC - game had only 20 levels of finished content

Warhammer online - pvp dissapointed compared to DAoC

DCUO - not enough endgame

DDO - my guild died, was not having enough fun and wanted a change.

Tera - didnt like the setting and rooted during combat was irritating me

Rift - unnatural annimations

SWTOR - finished the main stories of my 3 mains.

TSW - combat was uninspiring

Neverwinter - combat had not enough choices, and to few classes.

FF XIV - worst mmo ever.. No world feeling

FF XIV arr - there are equall games that cost much less to play

GW2 -  nonadvancement at max level ( cgaracter, gear or. Story) and non trinity combat is to chaotic in groups...

mostly stupid reasons, and many games i tried a few times, but its allways the same reason as before that makes me loose interest with the game.

i've played and quit most of these games for similar reasons,

just curious, what did you finder "funner" about EQ compared to AC?

I thoroughly enjoyed AC, and still think it is the MMORPG to date.

I found in EQ there was no community besides the fact that some areas forced you numerically wise to have more fire power, in AC you could do anything with tact and trial, but somehow the community was much greater bonded because of the system they had in place, the classless systems, diverse open world landscapes, allegiance systems, buffing system, ect, in AC quests that might "require 4" people, were less because of the firepower needed, more because they might be things you need multiple people for, aka holding open levers for doors so your band can advanced and push a button that unlocks the previous door so you could run up to them, or jumps and climbs that required you to stand on a friends shoulder ( could be bypassed if you were an amazing jumper I'm sure.. ).

PvP was balanced - a level 40 could defeat a level 200, skill based, twitch style.

PvW was fun, engaging quests that are not rinse and repeat, open world, constantly updated and changing world, developer ran events, holidays, ect, meaningful loot drops that were usable from level 5 to level 126+

Spellsystem and Skill system was open ended, could choose whatever skills you wanted and build your "class" around your play style, spells encouraged other players to find and buff newbies and friends.

Economy was great, there was a chance of finding a perfect item on any of the monsters, so it wasn't just like most games where you grind to a tier level, do a certain quest for end-game gear.

Actuall dungeons and lands that required jumping and locked doors, acid pits and traps., and not just some cheesy Jump quest ala Gw2,

Community was great in the beginning, it was pioneers of medieval fantasy, D&D, roleplaying, actual allegiance systems that encouraged players to seek out new players and help them in the world, towns across the landscape with different benefits be it decently priced fletcher, or a mage tower, or near popular dungeons, or not so popular, but hidden and held secretive areas...

In the end I have quit most current Online Games, because they do not meet what I like to think of as an Massive Multi-player Online Roleplaying Game.

MASSIVE -

Oblivion 16 miles square ~ WoW in 2004 was 80 miles square ~ Asheron's Call 500 miles square

MULTI-PLAYER -

as stated above Forced grouping comes in two styles, numerical battles, aka EQ/WOW and thinking battles, pulling levers, standing on another players shoulders, aka AC

Online

Roleplaying Game -

This I find can be interpreted many ways, AC and EQ quests I consider Role playing quests, WoW quests I do not consider role playing for 99% of the quests, AC I found Roleplay community was better then EQ, because of the actual benefits and system to get players together, instead of silly numerical battles, aka boss regens to fast, ect.
