Serviceable is a ridiculous claim, especially when you didn't provide other current games that are superior graphically.

On another note, just looking at the screenshots I get the impression it would bog down my machine (sorta old).  Lotta high res and detailed textures, trees and foliage, quality shadows and lighting and a high LOD even in the distance.  It does remind me a bit of Vanguard (without the waxiness), but still, other than no name games that are still in development, there are few that look as good.  I say this as someone who is not an especially big fan of the game and have no reason to champion it.

Screenshots are not that detailed. I been in this game since it was first announced. Graphics are sub par. Not even close to those of AA as the OP claims. More along the lines of Second Life in basic mode detail. It is the only game I can compare it to. Tree textures are cheap. The characters are even worse. The buildings in general are very simple stone textures. Almost any current MMO out right now can easily beat it in graphics. By the time this game is actually released...the graphics will be far outdated.

I dont' know about how i feel about reviewing this game.

Yes I know it's charging money,

yes i know people on this site are requesting it to be reviewed.

yes I know one of the dev said it's basically open.

Yes I know all this, but lets be fair as people reviewing, does this look finished to you? Playing this for a bit, no it doesn't look finished, it looks like a work in progress.  I dunno, it just seems odd to review a product that isn't finished, they made a mistake calling this open, and I don't agree with charging for it, i'd say to be really fair as your a good bit through this, giving it two scores, one as a here and now product, and a less harsh score as an unfinished producct. However this game is going to get a low score as it's pretty obvious it isn't finished, so comparing it to finished products like Witcher 3 is kind of dumb. Witcher is finished, this is not.

Personal opinion, they shouldn't be charging for this, and stop calling it X enrollment and call it what it really is, Alpha/Beta testing.

My personal opinion is if they are charging to buy into the game plus a monthly sub. It deserves to be treated/reviewed as a full release game. Charging full game price plus pay a monthly sub...that says game is ready for release and deserves to be reviewed. So it should be compared to Witcher 3 as well as any MMO currently on the market.

If you question the success of open sandboxes just look at minecraft. Super popular because people get to use their own imaginations facilitated by GUI. As simple as mining blocks and letting people place them. Shroud is that concept on roids.

This is like Minecraft on ROIDS? Seriously? Where is the freedom to build in this game? Your freedom to build depends on how big your RL wallet is and then you can have the biggest house! And there is no freedom to build anywhere. You can build in a marked town zone. You cannot mine anything and place it somewhere. Everything when it comes to actual building is premade...and guessed the Cash Shop!

On top of sandboxes as minecraft, are just open world. Not full of loading screens and instances. Not full of pre placed house instanced zones.

Everquest Landmark is perhaps closest to Minecraft on roids. This game has absolutely nothing in comparison to Minecraft.

I see the devs speaking how this game is comparable to Ultima Online...which really it isn't. Now comparing it to Minecraft...which it is not even close. Next you'll be calling it the new WoW just to try n get some money out of that crowd as well.

Shroud of the Avatar allows players to select between Solo-Player and Massively Multiplayer (and a few modes in between). When playing in the default configuration, it is more MMO than most MMO's! Most MMO's have "Shards" to prevent overpopulation of one server. Shards mean that people on separate shards will never meet, which arbitrarily fragments the community. SotA actually allows ALL players into the same single world. We manage overcrowding by temporarily spinning up multiple instances of an overcrowded area, and sorting people into them based on your friends graph. I think this is both an MMO and better than Sharded MMO's!

Shroud of the Avatar has the best features of many of this teams prior work: Virtue Quests as seen in Ultima IV-VII, Detailed World interaction and NPC schedules as seen in Ultima VII, Massively Multiplayer play as seen in Ultima Online, and persistent player world impact as seen in both the Housing of Ultima Online and the Contol Points of Tabula Rasa.

If you are looking for an MMO, you will not be unhappy with SotA! If you are looking for a story driven RPG, SotA will also deliver. And you can play it in solo mode if you wish.

See you in the game!

 - Lord British

Perhaps Lord British should also mention extremely small zones...after zones....after zones. Absolutely no freedom no exploration. City zones...leave the city and you don't run load onto a map. Click on a wilderness tile, you enter into a small forest for less than 5 minutes, you are back into a loading screen.

The combat is horrible. Random 'cards' thing just are not fun. You're spending your combat time watching these cards roll around and hope some useful skill pops up!

Graphics and animations are well below the standard of most F2P games. And I get the 'oh it is still in alpha'. Alpha for like two years now and graphics have improved minimally in that time.

Housing is ok. But it is a matter of whoever spends the most RL money is going to see the most benefits from housing.

This game was originally slated to be released by the end of 2014. I would be surprized if we see an official release much before the end of next year.

Lord British and fans will continue to attempt to sell this as a UO like game. Only to get the money from old school UO players. Who loved the freedom and exploration that UO offered in so many ways. But SOTA is not remotely close to the open world of UO. And to compare this game not only to UO but to Tabula Rasa as well is only a dib to get more money from fans of these games.

I sadly put my money into this game. I wouldn't feel right recommending this game to anyone else. If you are after a dated look, instanced, horrible combat, overly complex crafting and housing run by RL cash...well then guess this is the game for you!

Amazing how that works eh? No time to work on the game...still needs more 'polish' and time. But in the meantime, check out our weekly shiny new items that we have taken the time to polish up for our cash shop.

You just never played Final Fantasy or other Asian games. You have no appreciation for this style. Which is fine just understand that does not make it terrible graphics. It may be not to your style the art but graphics are something else altogether you are confusing art style with graphics.

I have played final fantasy....... Even final fantasy 11 has better graphics then arche age. Final fantasy 14 rb has 1000 times better graphics. Im not confusing art style with graphics, the graphics are horrible. Compared to ESO, or final fantasy 14 rb. The other guy said it best, it feels like a cheap perfect world game.

Look at a screen shot from elder scrolls online water, then look at this. The reflections will tell it all. Not to mention, maybe where they made it the graphics cards are different, but there is no way i should be getting 15 fps with a Radeon 7950 i5 3570k. I am sure it has something to do with radeon pro making it so low, but even eso doesnt go that low on ultra, run at like 30+ with sweet fxs fxaa smaa mlaa and everything on.

This is all really your opinion. I hated the look of ESO and Final Fantasy. And the animations weren't a whole hell of alot better, I think. I enjoy the graphics on AA. But then again...AA may have less fancy graphics, but housing, farming, crafting, pvp, pve, exploring with no invisable walls, and dungeons look different from each other....stuff like that make the game for me.

And it's your computer...I am running on Ultra High settings in AA, with no lag on Geforce GTX 560 and not a very good DSL connection..and I still manage to keep up with everything goin on around me.

Re-roll to another server. The other servers have NO queue for patrons and f2p players were getting in after 45 mins all day yesterday.

Sounds pretty simple to just reroll on new server. But limited to only two characters across all servers. And if you have bought patron status, all rewards are only allowed on those two characters.

And only to what, wait a few more days till the new servers are full and go threw the same thing again?

No, Trion needs to do something now about the gold sellers/farmers. The afkers and afk botters. Adding servers is just a temp fix for those just joining the game.

Gotta is a  horrible system. Perhaps it simply wasn't something abused as much in other countries as more people use public computers. So overlooked by the devs. Here in N/A and Europe, we have it quite well that many of us have a home PC.

Well if you paid for a pack of any kind. You agreed to this by purchasing:

Gameplay requires: (1) INTERNET CONNECTION (SOLD SEPARATELY), AND (2) ACCEPTANCE OF LICENSE AND USAGE TERMS. Provided on a commercially reasonable, “as is” and “as available” basis, without warranties or conditions of any kind. Trion Worlds does not ensure continuous or error-free access, use, or availability of any game content, feature, gameplay, or server and may change, modify, disable, suspend, or remove any such content, feature, gameplay, or server at its sole discretion.

That pretty much covers their ass in this situation, and you agreed to that by purchasing. So exactly how is that fraud? And if you are running as a free member, you really have no reason to complain at all.

With all the good land being tied up, apparently even on the new servers, what incentive as a new player do I have to become a subscriber at this time?  From what I understand, it'll be weeks before the land situation starts to free up.  Is this incorrect?

The land is not all tied up. There is always some spots..people are just to lazy to take the time to look for it. And alot will free up in the comming weeks. I've seen so many people bragging they have 3 or more houses across all the servers, sometimes all on the one server. Well keeping them all up and maintaining them will be a full time job. So within the next few weeks alot will empty out.

There is plenty of other things to do in the meantime. You could just work your way up the levels. Gather resources, buy a house and have it all ready for placement. If you are going to wait untill land frees up to do all this. By the time you are ready, it will be all gone again.

wellp, one less to kill on AA, a shame.

Well the way people are leaving you may wind up committing suicide.

Yep...they are leaving so fast that there is still a pretty long Queue to get into game. Servers are full and most house/land plots are gone. But according to's dead before it's begun.

"Trion Worlds does not ensure continuous or error-free access, use, or availability of any game content, feature, gameplay, or server and may change, modify, disable, suspend, or remove any such content, feature, gameplay, or server at its sole discretion."

No fraud going on anywhere. If you bought any pack...this comes right off the page. They basically tell you there is a chance of issues, and to purchase at your own risk. So how exactly is this fraud?

Completely agree with you there. I have stated this many times on the offical forms only to get 'It's in alpha'. But over a year in development and still so little improvements on graphics and animiations. And combat, it's horrible, doesn't matter how well your skills are, if you don't get the right card at that right moment, it's all pointless. And I could go on about graphics. Toon textures are HORRIBLE. The moon looks like a crayon drawing moving across the sky. Birds flying, no matter what direction they fly..they are always facing the same way...birds fly backwards.

All I have really seen this team improve on for each testing weekend, is what kinda new stuff they can sell in the cash shop. Pay for more land, pay for another house, put money in for support. A section for additional support so they can add horses. Or if you have too much a city. Next will be more support to add pets, or decent monster animations.

I have put my money into this game. I wouldn't  recommend anybody else do the same. The release date still states the end of this year. At best it won't be before the end of 2015. And unless they put a HUGE graphics update in the next year and change the combat system. Not to mention actually adding real spawn and wildlife to the world. I don't see this game going very far.

$100 to get into beta? And 3 months subscription and then a monthly fee to continue to play the beta? And the game is not due to release for over a year?

Wow...and people were all up in arms about $150 for AA.

Here's a gameplan. Wait a friggen the game, try it out! Most of us here are sick of the daily bitching about this being P2W.

If you want to pay the monthly sub, you will enjoy the game.

If you want to play for will not enjoy the game as much.

If you want to dump a bunch of money on top of the monthly sub, just to be ahead of everyone else...well go for it.

People who are doing the most crying about the LP are those who want to play for free and have everything in the game handed to them without much effort. LP is the best thing for this game. It will hopefully kill the F2P community n make this more of a sub based game.

I agree with the OP.

In large scale raids (20+) I actively stay away from "VOIP-only" guilds.

Sure, for most people talking is faster than typing. But chat logs have a couple of key advantages:

*) More than one person can type at a time, only 1 person can talk at a time and be understood
*) More than one person talking at a time completely disrupts all comms.
*) In most games, multiple text chat streams can be sent to different chat windows, allowing you to organize and prioritize simultaneous communication.
*) Once you say something, it's heard and gone. If you didn't hear it or don't remember it, your screwed. If it's typed, you can scroll back if needed, but re-read it as many times as you need.
*) I can tie in chat commands to in-game macros. I can't do that with VOIP.
*) Chat logs keep a definitive record of what was said, you aren't relying on anyone's memory of the event (although VOIP can be recorded, it often isn't).
*) My dogs don't think I'm trying to talk to them and come running for attention
*) My kid doesn't hear a constant stream of teen-angst-fueled gutter talk, or I don't have to wear headphones

Any more, I generally find it much faster to type than to talk, because i don't have to wait for Chatty Joe to finish his story about "Man I'm so high right now" or Chatty Jane talk about her bad day with kids eating the paste in daycare again.

We got along quite fine in Ultima Online and older MMOs without voice. Hell UO hardly had a decent group chat and no friends list...most of us used ICQ to get a hold of each other.

My son uses voice chat constantly, I find it rather annoying. They hardly talk  about the game. Maybe just a few minutes here n there while in the game. But otherwize it is just random chat. I can't stand listening to him...why would i want to listen to a bunch of complete strangers doing the same thing?

Fixed two of the need to find the 1034 and a couple other error messages.

Having played CB4 for the past several days, I can say that the Labor Point is the single worst idea I have ever seen in my 15 years of playing MMORPGs.  The. Single. Worst. Idea. Ever.

A severe artificial restriction on how much "gameplay" you can enjoy unless you pay?  That tells me that the developers don't want any f2p players clogging up their servers at all.  Pay us monthly or GTFO is the clear message, to me.

And this is a problem because?? I'll be more than happy to see a minimal F2P crowd and more of a P2P crowd in this game. F2P brings nothing to the game but complaints. Probibly one of the best ideas I have seen to date. I personally am sick of the F2P crowd going into MMOs and bitching and crying cause those who put money towards a game get more perks.
