I agree with the OP.

In large scale raids (20+) I actively stay away from "VOIP-only" guilds.

Sure, for most people talking is faster than typing. But chat logs have a couple of key advantages:

*) More than one person can type at a time, only 1 person can talk at a time and be understood
*) More than one person talking at a time completely disrupts all comms.
*) In most games, multiple text chat streams can be sent to different chat windows, allowing you to organize and prioritize simultaneous communication.
*) Once you say something, it's heard and gone. If you didn't hear it or don't remember it, your screwed. If it's typed, you can scroll back if needed, but re-read it as many times as you need.
*) I can tie in chat commands to in-game macros. I can't do that with VOIP.
*) Chat logs keep a definitive record of what was said, you aren't relying on anyone's memory of the event (although VOIP can be recorded, it often isn't).
*) My dogs don't think I'm trying to talk to them and come running for attention
*) My kid doesn't hear a constant stream of teen-angst-fueled gutter talk, or I don't have to wear headphones

Any more, I generally find it much faster to type than to talk, because i don't have to wait for Chatty Joe to finish his story about "Man I'm so high right now" or Chatty Jane talk about her bad day with kids eating the paste in daycare again.

 This.

We got along quite fine in Ultima Online and older MMOs without voice. Hell UO hardly had a decent group chat and no friends list...most of us used ICQ to get a hold of each other.

My son uses voice chat constantly, I find it rather annoying. They hardly talk  about the game. Maybe just a few minutes here n there while in the game. But otherwize it is just random chat. I can't stand listening to him...why would i want to listen to a bunch of complete strangers doing the same thing?

Fixed two of the errors...now need to find the 1034 and a couple other error messages.

Having played CB4 for the past several days, I can say that the Labor Point is the single worst idea I have ever seen in my 15 years of playing MMORPGs.  The. Single. Worst. Idea. Ever.

A severe artificial restriction on how much "gameplay" you can enjoy unless you pay?  That tells me that the developers don't want any f2p players clogging up their servers at all.  Pay us monthly or GTFO is the clear message, to me.

And this is a problem because?? I'll be more than happy to see a minimal F2P crowd and more of a P2P crowd in this game. F2P brings nothing to the game but complaints. Probibly one of the best ideas I have seen to date. I personally am sick of the F2P crowd going into MMOs and bitching and crying cause those who put money towards a game get more perks.

Error what?

Seems to be alot of errors in this patch. Many not being able to launch the game. Many not being able to patch the game. I am stuck with downloading errors. Doing everything in the book an a few made up things still hasn't let me patch to this newest version. Guess we'll hafta wait n see if things get fixed soon.

Well if you think about it... what happened to the dwarves, elves, orcs, etc?

They may have died in a zombie apocolypse, caused by some dark ritual that got out of hand...

Imagine playing a necromancer in a zombie apocolypse setting.

There's lots of potential for interesting lore here.
Basically, just a typical fantasy setting, but zombies are a huge problem as part of the theme.

What happened to the dwarves, elves and orcs? Ummm...nothing? They are there in almost every fantasy setting. Log onto any fantasy MMO...and in all likelyhood you'll see them there. And in many of those fantasy games...the undead are a problem that keep popping up. And it is all about fighting the undead curse.

I mean, why aren't they alive today? Because their races were wiped from the earth.

.

I'm not sure if you are joking or serious? I think the fact that they didn't actually exist may have alot to do with the reason they aren't alive today.

wah, what a bad intro. i dont command a cgi intro, but an intro should at least show me gameplay/ingame world and not this sect like speech. but im still interested in the game.

If they showed too much gameplay/ingame world...they would probibly loose more interest than they would gain. Game I think will be good...(once they get rid of their current combat system),but graphically it is very sub standard.

God have mercy on me....another freeloader that expects everything handed to him in game and get the same treatment as those of us who put money into the game.

Zombie survival games are always set in modern times.

How cool would it be to play Zombie Apocolypse in a traditional fantasy setting, with Orcs, Dwarves, Elves, magic, etc?

Why would we need another Zombie survival game at all?  And when it comes to zombie survival...does it even matter what time it is in? Go out...kill zombies if your an orc, dwarf or modern day human...will not make much difference. Using a gun or a fireball spell...same effect. Only difference would be another shoddy overdone zombie game with a fantasy twist.

I've also heard it's got some juicy pay-to-win features which is a big red flag.

I've also heard that Sweden has nothing but hot chicks, I too was misinformed.

If you need someone to sell you a game via a public forum, then maybe the game isn't for you.

 This.

Do some research, watch some YouTube videos. Why should other people need to make the decision for you? It will be free to play, so try it out when it is released. Decide then if it is worth it to you.

Yes of course, labor points are there to fight gold farming...LOL.

You surely forgot the part where this game was FREE TO PLAY and gold farmers can have as many accounts as they like.

Run out of LP? No prob, they switch to one of their 200 other accounts.

Get banned for botting? No prob, they still have 199 accounts with max level toons they can bot with.

This game will be plagued with bots and gold sellers from day one till the day it shuts down.

And of course you forgot the part where Pay to Play MMOs also have a fair shair of problems with gold sellers and bots. And as much hacking and conning and cheating. Over the past few months I have been bouncing around MMOs for many years both P2P and F2P, from my personal experience is I have seen way more gold sellers/bots in P2P MMOs than I have seen in F2P.

In P2P MMOs, everybody wants to rush to the end game and have best items so they can stand around  n look all special like. So they will use gold sellers and botters more. In F2P, well if you not paying a sub, what's the rush, so why waste money on gold.

Every new MMO will be farmed to death...no getting away from it, be it P2P or F2P.

Maybe, the only solution would have been  " Vanguard 2 " .

But because of the failure, not to be called Vanguard at all.

SOE always had a bad engine, EQ2 was almost as bad,  unfixable.  That's why WoW blew the socks off them in 2003 or when ever.

The problem with SOE :

They don't fix their stuff, they only sold expansions then advertised.  Blizzard went years with free up dates until they went greedy.  To this day the buildings are not quite square, shorelines don't look natural, rocks that float.  And the coding is still horrible ! ..........I don't like SOE.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes was a high fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) created by Sigil Games Online, and now developed and run by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). Originally, the game was co-published by Sony Online Entertainment and the company producing it, Sigil Games Online. The game was released on January 30, 2007, with an early access date of January 26, 2007 for pre-order customers. On May 15, 2007, it was announced in a press release that Sony Online Entertainment had completed a transaction to purchase key assets of Sigil Games Online, including all rights to Vanguard.

The game initially sold around 242,000 copies, while the number of active subscriptions (those who play longer than the free month included when buying the game) was estimated to be around 130,000, to drop in the next months to about 40,000.For much of 2009 the population of Vanguard was almost non-existent. Though recently, after some changes in the game to make it more stable, the population has started to rise again and it has a noticeably larger in-game player presence.

Following the acquisition by SOE, the developers mainly focused on bug fixes and gameplay improvements for a long time. In July 2008, the developers announced they wanted to attract old and new players as the game had reached a much more presentable state. On September 10, 2008, Game Update 6 finally introduced the long awaited trial island, the Isle of Dawn, which also quickly became the standard starting area for new regular characters. On October 8, 2008, the trial version was released.

On March 12, 2009, SOE announced that it would add its LiveGamer Exchange RMT (real money trading) service to Vanguard, which allows trading game money, items, and whole characters between players, for real currency.

On July 7, 2010 the three remaining US game servers were merged into one, bringing the total number of Vanguard servers down to two.

After a long hiatus, new game content was announced at the end of July 2011. A game update was released on August 10, 2011,  with another at August 24, 2011. On March 21, 2012, SOE announced that Vanguard would become free-to-play in summer 2012. As of August 14, 2012, Vanguard has been free to play.

On January 24, 2014 Sony Online Entertainment announced that the game will be shut down on July 31, 2014.

On July 31, 2014, at 9:00 PM, the game officially shut down. The game website now redirects to Sony Online Entertainment.

A wee bit of research into the game that you love so much and the company you hate so much will show you...if not for SOE...your beloved game probibly wouldn't have seen the light of day to begin with or would have been shut down shortly after release. As for the rally talk...SOE did what they could...they couldn't force players to return.  I am not a big fan of SOE...but when it comes to Vanguard...SOE did attempt to save it and because of them we even got to enjoy the game for a few years.

Learn the game playing it. You wont get everything crude in your mouth like in WoW.

Best of luck, you'll need it. lol!

Really? I think perhaps you should actually read the OP...then read yours...and rethink who you are calling dumb...

Thanks but I'm having more fun than I've had in years in a mom. I'll play, and pay the sub!

Years in a mom? I donno, but standard issue is about 9 months in a mom.....

As for the game...personally I think it is worth it. Seems people who just want everything for free and to be easy don't like this one. I haven't been playing alot of it right now, just rather wait till actual release to get in the game. But questing is no better or worse than any other MMO. Graphically it runs pretty well. People will bitch n complain that graphics not top notch...then when they get a game with top notch graphics they will complain that their PC can't handle it.

As a person who is adverse to leaving their computer on all day / night long...the beta in it's current state is neigh unplayable (unless you like pure grind questing & killing mobs).  I logged into the new beta with 10 labor points and need 50 alone just to turn in the first crafting quest.  I could sit on my hands for an hour or wander around grinding while the points accrued...but I just got really bored, really fast.

I recommend everyone to avoid the game if they aren't a patron, because without labor points the game is more boring than practically everything else.  I really hope they make labor points more like production points of Tera...the system in it's current state is overly harsh :(

And that is a bad thing because?? It should be harsher for freeloaders. Labor points slow to regen, slower experience to level. If you not going to couph up a few bucks a month...why should subscribers pay for the free ride of freeloaders?

Over the weekend...was kinda of key to me, the guy makes a bunch of conclusions after a weekend of play, beside the point of telling me over and over again how I'll feel.

"It doesn't make sense to me." seemed to be the overarching theme of his critique. Could just be a matter of he needed to spend more time with it and learn the ins and outs, as it sounds like it's something quite different than normal, which is bound to feel illogical when you are conditioned to play as we are.

I'd have to try it, it sounds really interesting to me. Yet maybe he makes a good point...hard to say without seeing it and experiencing it.

First off...we only have a weekend here and there to test and assess different aspects of the game.  And th OP is absolutely right. The combat system makes little sence. I for one was concentrating on archery with some melee skills. Well what good is it when I go into combat using the bow, and only my dodge melee skills pop up. And once the enemy is near I am getting all blanks and archery skills.

In some ways, it can work. In a group if a players focus is totally on archery, or tank, one can build up a deck just for that. But there is no way of knowing what skill or when a skill you want will pop up.  Like a healer class, who can't heal because all the wrong cards are popping up for him. Or a tank who can't tank because he gets a wack of dodge or parry skills comming up and no useful combat hits.

The combat system is about the worst I have ever seen in over 20 years of gaming. It is the breaker for me. Some may like it, but I think the majority will not enjoy it so much. We'll see if it is improved over time. The Devs of this game have been good at listening to the players concerns, so we may find a happy medium.

Nice try ZM

Another brainiac here at MMORPG forums. Perhaps you should take a look at Steams MMO list...not all are F2P. Eve, DarkFall and Final Fanatasy all fall into the catagory of P2P.

Do you have any idea how retarded that statement sounds?

Hunters go out in groups. Usually takes a group to take out one deer....if they are lucky. Because the deer has better sences...can smell them, can hear them, spot and react 10x faster than the  hunter can. You give that deer a gun and the brains to use it, it could easily take out ten hunters before the hunters even knew there was a deer around.

How does that refer to this topic anyway? Are you saying that the PvPers are not as skilled as the PvE group, so it requires more of gankers in a group to take out one lowly PvE player?

Pardon me, but wasn't the whole purpose of LP's that no character could build / craft stuff 24/7, and you could hire people to work for you by buying some or all of their LP's?

I'm strictly against the idea that players buy LP's from Cash Shop, but otherwise it sounds a good way to limit freeloaders and bots and encourage people to subscribe, and also add some realism to crafting.

Problem is that even if you are sub, paying montly for this game, you wont even be able to craft/gather for about 1-2 hour maximum everyday. Now i am not even a crafter or housing kind of guy mind you, but it bothered me so bad to be restricted from what i could and couldnt do.... Nah cant cut that tree on ur land, gotta wait tomorow or another 10 minutes... Its straight ridiculous. You gain about 2200 LP a day subscribed and some item go up to 1500lp to make if not more, so from what ive seen so far.

Well I got great news for you then Lucious....you don't have to play!  So not your issue.  Fun how ESO and so many other MMOs charge a a monthly fee and put in a cash shop in there too...but that is acceptable. Other MMOs charge a silly amount for some collectors edition that gets you into alpha or beta testing and some perk items...and that seems acceptable. They charge a monthly fee and that is acceptable.

Now AA comes along and charges for basically a special edition which gives mostly in game items and subscription for 3 months to follow and gets those who paid alpha access. Plus once the game is released, nobody has to pay to try it! Everybody gets an unlimited free trial without dropping a penny into the game. I don't recall ESO or Wildstar allowing people that choice?

And so this game doesn't hand you everything on a silver platter. You have to be smart and choose what you are going to do. It's a game you'll hafta think...not just follow the carrot on a stick.

Like every other MMO that has been released this year....the closer it comes to release, we have people who have NEVER PLAYED THE GAME becoming the experts on it's failure. I think somebody didn't get their alpha/beta invite and is pouty about it.

Was thinking the exact same thing. Why ruin another great title by making it a MMO...haven't ween seen enouph of this?
