These constructive suggestions were all rejected or ignored.  All those threads are on the official forums to read, today.

Oh yeah? Link me to a dev comment where it said the community suggestions are rejected, cos I will blog about it if they have done that. But I haven't seen that going around.

Just a few of the official forum threads where this has happened, many times: (in one thread more than 15 suggestions were offered and then rejected outright, or ignored entirely with no response.)

Combat, Magic, Skills, Advancement (MEGA POST)

Let's talk about combat!

Starr Long Discusses Chaotic Aspects of SOTA Combat

Combat, Magic, Skills - No UI, No 'Deck' Proposal

Reply to Chris's Combat Description

---

happy reading.

Yeah... So much for "Crowdfunding" and hearing out the players. This is an absolute farce as far as I'm concerned.

The ridiculous combat system is a prime example of this dev team doing what they're doing regardless of how well it is received by the community.

I hope people rip the combat apart when release 4 comes.

BTW I did review all of those threads. Not once did I find a comment from a dev saying that they are ignoring our opinions. In fact in some of them and many of the new posts the devs are actively debating and  discussing the facts and information on the topics.  Y'all need to go read up there.

Do people just really like being alarmists on MMORPG.com?  I saw this post and went over to the site to see if I could find any information on the housing and it seems like someone just saw the permanent lot thing for pledgers and threw a tantrum.   I don't doubt housing is going to be pricy, but there seems to be different plot sizes that can handle differently scaled structures.  The "pay upkeep or you lose the plot" is kind of annoying, but otherwise there isn't a lot that seems bad about housing.

That is exactly what seems to happen... I just urge people to go and have a look at the site and make informed decisions. Informed decisions these days, especially if you are an EA UO fanboi, are very rare to find though.

The upkeep for the lot isn't going to be anything major, especially when you consider what happened in UO. Loss of your house and EVERYTHING included in it, and the land it was on.

When UO was actually still played and popular, you also could find land, so yeah that was a bitch.

All very good questions. While I can answer some of them with certain clarity, I urge you not to listen to myself or anyone else here but simply to head over to the Shroud of the Avatar forum and website for discussions on these topics which have now been going on for months.

There is a wealth of information available for everyone :)

They have also opened up their pledge rewards to be more newbie friendly as now "founders" can gift founder status to other people who have pledge.  If you someone was interested in Shroud but felt like they missed out on the Kickstarter campaign then they should definitely check it out:

Just be aware of the restrictions.

  1. All posts concerning Shroud of the Avatar player to player transactions or services are limited to this section of the forums. Unwanted solicitation occurring in other sections of the forums or via chat or private message is prohibited, and could result in account restriction or ban. Also, posting multiple times within your own post, bumping it to "keep it on top", and daily replacing a post with a new one is also considered spam and is therefore, prohibited.

Due to potential legal liability issues, Portalarium will not allow any activities that involve real dollar exchanges between players if the goods involved cannot be delivered to the customer immediately. At this time, we are only permitting Founder Upgrade pairing as a permitted exchange in the Player Marketplace and only if this exchange is equal to or less than the value of the pledge.* Players are free to advertise other exchanges in advance but if those advertisements lead to actual real dollar transactions, those posts may be removed along with any other necessary actions up to and including suspensions and bans.

Once Shroud of the Avatar launches and goods can be exchanged immediately we will remove the current restrictions and we will take a neutral position on these exchanges. We will not restrict exchange of goods but we will not officially endorse these exchanges due to liability issues and staffing bandwidth required to actively police these exchanges. This means all exchanges of virtual good for real dollars are at the players own risk and governed by the terms of service of whatever third party platform (eBay, PayPal, etc.) that is used. Portalarium reserves the right to restrict any activities around these exchanges if they cause widespread issues for our community or if these activities involve exploits of any kind.

*NOTE: For the duration of the Founder Pledge promotion (thru April 7, 2014), it is against Portalarium policy to charge more than the cost of gifted or transferred pledges.

alot of people in real life spending LITERALLY THOUSANDS of DOLLARS to have a house (pixy dust) in a virtual world.

I will be searching these people out and offering them company and telling them how awesome of a person they are and how awesome the house they own is on a daily basis, all I ask in return is full access to all amenities and some of those free special harvest items and $19.99 a month.

I plan on making a killing.

From what I can see, all of those tools who own those houses this early on are going to be seeking you out to brag about it lol, you aint gonna have to go lookin'.

Hmm, I remember swg having open world housing that didn't cost people extra real money.  If a game that began its development almost  15 years ago can let players having housing like that, then why can't this one?

Who said they cant? The bottom line is that they are not going to. So you have to ask: Why?

There is, for the past 2 days now, a player marketplace already. People have bought up founder accounts and are selling them for a profit. Yes, gold farming is already taking place and the game isn't even out of pre-Alpha. That's the crowd they attracted when they offered housing as an incentive to back the game. It is an investment, just like the pledges are now. It's pretty terrible and makes me especially glad I haven't taken part in any of those scams.

You really should have made a new topic for this. In any case, it is a referral system and not really profit. If anyone does the wrong thing though it needs to be reported. This is the text on the Marketplace Forum over at SotA:

You cant miss it. It is big, outlined, and bold. If you have a problem with someone in the market place, E-Mail or report via forum and end your problem and need to post here of all places about this issue where totally NOTHING can be done about it.

OK Membrane....ok

I will share some new interest in the game since my last few posts. Obviously alot has happened. First I will admit the game looks like it will indeed launch at some point in the future. It will launch in a more polished fashion than "Mortal Online" did. I also couldn't help but take notice of the armors and weapons that were available in last beta. The striking resemblance they had with UO weapons and armors was impressive to say the least. Now I am wondering a few things. What is the area at the very bottom of the UI that looks like level bars all the way across the bottom of the screen? Have they switched to a level system or are they still set on old UO where you have X amount of points to put into whatever you want till you run out of points and simply switch whenever you wish and the points will de-level to allow another skill to go up?

What is the max gear that can be stored in bank? That will also make or break the need for a house. If I can store enough crafting and extra gear in case I get PKed and full looted I will not be as bent about the housing system as it stands. Also will there be the ability to steal from people within city walls? Like in UO if you were maxed on being a thief you could look into a person's bag and take something at the bank and deposit it in your bank before they even could call "guard" or there was the traditional one thief and 3 vulture tactic and one intended target.

Please feel free to elaborate on any of these topics of the full online part of the game.

I am banned from SotA forum again, thinking about not going back in as IM. But we'll see.

Do you have a SotA forum account? Some of your questions have decent information posted already, some do not, some should be in form of ideas like, I want to be a Crafter, maybe cant own a house so what can your Bazar/Marketplace offer me?

I usually stick to the PvP side of things there so having me read or ask crafting posts is quite rare. I suggest you use SotA forum, plenty of info and people there to help.

Nobody is forcing you to throw down your mom's $

How buthurt you must be to come up with something like this? If this is your only argument than you just admit that you have no argument at all.

That is not an argument put forward by me, it was a statement.

The argument was since you mentioned single player- "If you play the Single Player Offline version of Shroud of the Avatar, you don't even need to think about it so I'm not exactly sure why you are clearly upset at nothing at all."

If you play the Single Player Offline version of Shroud of the Avatar, you don't even need to think about it so I'm not exactly sure why you are clearly upset at nothing at all.

It's the new world of crowdfunding and paid alpha/beta access.  Even Steam got on the bandwagon and offers Early Access.

In the past, publishers and developers had to beg for beta testers and offered contests and prizes to entice the public to join.  Now, it's the other way around.  Granted, most projects do get you the full retail game but there are a few projects that still make you pay in addition for the final game.

But as with anything, it's all about perspective and what you get out of it.  Some crowdfunding projects truly do engage with the community to help shape the game while others just want testers to find bugs.  And still others don't bother about feedback and simply want pre-orders / pre-release funding.  Your mileage may vary.

I can say that SotA is one of the few that is very engaged with the community of backers and very transparent -- sometimes so much so at the cost of public image for those that don't understand the development process.

Nobody ever begged players to play beta. We players have always been in a mad rush to get into betas. Again, this isn't paying for a beta, what you gain is access to the team and assets early as well, you get a chance to make things for this game and you also get paid back for it!

Several things have been done recently which have changed some of the opinions I once had, they are taking a lot of assets, now including music, directly from the community. Not only that, but they are helping that same community out in the development and production of those assets on top of their own game.

Seriously, what more could you ask for? Portalarium is picking up their game.

Pay to play beta but also at the same time shape the game and the direction it takes. What is really "so tired" are all you ill informed haters.

Building a present MMO with 2mil is impossible especially when accepting means having costs by delivering some physical goods to those pledgers.

Only Star Citizen has some minimal funding required to deliver the game they are pitching they probably would needed  around than 100mil to make it but with some good management they might get there.

I guess Shroud of the Avatar has Richard Garriot reputation on the line as a game designer if he can't deliver than he is not a real good developer.

How many games have you produced, and what have their budget's been?

Inform yourself about MMO budgets to understand what I'm talking about, hiring programmers and servers programmers are quite expensive this days and there is a lack of them if you make an engine yourself it will take months of development if you buy an engine you have to pay for it or license it then adjust it to your game which can also be time consuming.

Why would I do that? I'm not in the game industry or the finance industry. To inform myself about MMO budgets I'd need to know a decent amount of information on both sectors.

In any case as I am sure you are aware dev will continue past the first episode into the following episodes. This isn't a hire fixed number of devs for fixed time to rush out the door before summer type of project.

Sit back, take a chill pill, and enjoy the end result which I am sure is going to be much more interesting than any MMO your "friends" have ever worked on.

If people were so gungho for this game, you would think it would be bought by now.

I am still introducing people, both old Ultima players and new non-Ultima players, to SotA whom have yet to hear about it from both categories. That is why there is still housing, until fundraising is closed new players get a chance to both help support the game and benefit from that support by getting something that is not required but nice to have in some people's opinion and or play style.

In particular, note that the combat UI will feature a randomized placement of skills, rather than the traditional user defined placement of skills, on the combat hotbar.

Holy shit, that sounds absolutely fucking terrible.  Surely there is more to it than that.  I mean, is that how they are going to make combat more difficult?  Why not just blindfold us as well?  Only allow us to use our feet on the keyboard instead of our hands?

Since I can't actually see the video, I have to assume there is more to it than that.  Because if that is how this combat system actually works...well, Garriott should have just stayed in outer space.

Yeah, actually there will be much more to it than that. You know, even us early KS pledge members do not yet have access to test the combat system in the RCs yet, so speaking of it as broken at this stage is very misinformed almost to the point of brain death.

Yeah....except....it's pretty easy to write this combat off due to the fact that this one aspect alone GUARANTEES that the player will not be looking at the actual field of combat.  Rather, he'll be studying his action bar more closely than even the tab-target rotational spammy games do.

There is no way to spin this positively.  I have no idea what the rest of the combat entails, but the only thing brain dead is this random deck of cards idea.  It's horrible, and I can't see anything else they could add to combat to make this even remotely interesting.

I am not defending it, in fact I am positive if it doesn't work out and everyone bitches when they let us Kids test it in RC/Alpha it will be removed from the game and we'll get our WoW cookie cutter combat engine handed over to us.

That is the benefit of this game, we will decide and it would be a lot more helpful if constructive comments were made about the combat engine over on the SotA forum and not just a stream of QQ here. If you are one of the SotA forum users commenting on it, then great.

I dont see what the problem is anyway, if you look at my and many other's UO screens, we have crap ALL over them to the point where you can hardly see crap. Do/did us UO players care about our bars, spells, scrolls, skills getting all over the screen?  Nope. Harden up girls, macros will be doing all of our work for us anyway as with all previous games.

Can't find this combat video anywhere. All these links are to the 6 month progress video and I don't see any card game. ...... What am I missing here ? Can't even search YouTube and find it.

As per the first post in this thread, the video demonstrating the Random Hotkey Combat UI / Deck mechanic is here.

Also, as a bonus, for those interested in reading Starr Longs (exec producer for SotA) opinion of RMT/pay2win, you can check that out here.

As for Darkstarr's opinion on "pay to win" it is so very clear he was trolling that idiot in chat. Right to the point the guy in chat was rage quitting!  LAWL.

Darkstarr is my hero for doing that and I'd love to see more of it, but this is totally what it causes. Backlash and silliness from people like Golden Rash here.

My only comment here is to @Darkstarr: Who's the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?

Let the trolls do the trolling :P

People are having a massive QQ about things that are not even happening in this case. Darkstarr doesnt think it is pay to win, but where is it said that Darkstarr is putting in the system the QQ boyz are cowering from of I ask you good people!

Look at their current store, that sells virtual items for hundreds of dollars even before the game is in alpha, and tell me, do you trust them for one second to not put even more P2W crap in there?

*looks at their current store*

Yeah, I trust them for the moment. This is a fundraising adventure and I haven't really seen much P2W. When you start getting BS like "red tips" as in BSGO or other stuff that allows wallet warriors to cut down others without challenge via paying with mom's cash, then you can call it P2W.
