Tome of Knowledge is WARs best feature and probably the most underrated thing in MMORPG history.  Just a brilliant idea and I hope someone copies it someday (Sounds perfect for EQNext)

WoWs raids are a joke now.
Rift has the most challenging and difficult raids right now for large guilds

SoE better housing -no way, not even close.

WoW has a smoother engine, but imo its aged badly.

Come on now...

Because LFR is easy does not mean heroic raiding is.  Heroic raiding in WoW is generally tougher than Rift raiding.  Even Akylios, Rift's crowning achievement, was on a similar difficulty level as WoW's top boss at the time, heroic ragnaros.  Its just that much less guilds clear the Rift stuff and it sometimes takes them longer, but thats because the Rift talent pool is significantly smaller, the guilds havent been working together as long, and the top guilds and raiders leave the game all the time.

And the guy who said all SoE games have better housing than Rift was a bit silly, but Rift's housing is based off of, and inferior too, EQ2.  Much of the reason why its inferior is because EQ's housing has 8 years on Rift's (there is just simply far more options for EQ2 because of this).  Both games have excellent housing.  EQ1 and VG have good housing (and VG gets extra points for being player built and open world), but EQ2 and Rift offer far more customization.  SWG housing was also amazing.

The fact Bill put "adult" in quotes is going over most people's heads.

I remember when Rift was the "talk of the town"...now not so much..

On the surface, it has everything and more you would want from a wow generation themepark. And Yet it lacks something at least for me, and apparently others.

Maybe the community is just moving past this era, 2 raids, 2 dungeons does not sound very appealing to me.

One of the big turn offs for me was the lack of personality/charm in everything. Everything was done well for the most part, but Rift felt like such a 'paint by numbers' fantasy.

Exactly.  And part of the problem is the way they created the game itself.  Games like WoW and GW2 and even FFXIV...they started from an empty plate.  And the developers brainstormed "what can we do to make a great MMO".  And these three games, like them or not, have their own charm and personality.

Rift, on the other hand, didnt start as a blank plate.  It started as WoW.  And the developers thought 'how can we make WoW better?".  And the result is what should be a better game than WoW, but isn't.  And i would imagine part of that is because it has to be more engaging to make your own game, as opposed to a redo of someone else's.

WAR and its twin brother AOC are interesting case studies. they were born as WoW-Killers, and while WoW's population did take a hit, it was not due to them.

so what can MMO players and developers learn from this ?

the 'just like X but better' only worked once. eq-wow. it's not a good place to look for 'yet another mmo'. got to go different. if we want wow, we have wow. if we dont then we dont want 'like wow'.

WoW and EQ are almost nothing alike other than the fact they come from the same genre of MMORPG.  WoW and EQ2 are similar however.  And EQ players mostly HATED EQ2 because it was such a drastic change from EQ1.

The funny thing was, WAR is known for its PvP.

Yet the #1 thing I want a game to copy for PvE comes from WAR.  the Tome of Knowledge is the best handling of achievements the genre has seen (and ever will see I bet) because it tied them into lore.  It was absolutely birlliant in concpet and the execution was good.

And has any MMO feature had a greater impact than public quests?  WAR will be known for its PvP, but its legacy is PvE.  Without WAR, Rift and GW2 are much different games.

When I launch a content that supposed to last for 7 months and some of my guilds are already 9/14 heroic mode and more on the first day I would be kinda worried.

But then again WOW caters to the majority and majority wants it easy, I just don't see a reason anyone to continue their sub when they clear content within first week or even month. For me PvE is secondary thing in WOW, but still it's something I do that justifies the sub beside PvP.

less then 5% of the games players will clear hardmode SoO before the next expansion.  The hardcore raider market isnt the one they have to worry about.  Its a small percentage of their players and they know that WoW is the best in the business at consistent, properly tuned, challenging raid content.   Sure, some raids are tougher than others but for the most part the heroic raid content is quite hard, and hard for the right reasons, not due to improper tuning or mechanics that dont work like they should.  .

The 2.5s GCD:

On the official forums, which as always for *any* mmorpg are mostly full of whiners, someone posted a plea to shorten the GCD and speed up the combat.  However, unlike most posts with complaints about the game, this was met with a dozen pages of replies saying the combat system is fine.  And it is.

You definitely appreciate it more in the upper levels with more cross class skills unlocked.  And at least as a tank it definitely makes each individual action seem more meaningful.

It is a legit gripe someone could have with the game (which is the title of this thread) just like no trinity in GW2 is a legit gripe.  But neither is a bad thing in terms of game quality.  Just personal preference.

I am sorry  to burst your bubble, but this is not true at all. Many other countries around the globe have more freedom and personal liberty than the US. Not only constitutionally but also culturally, so please kindly stop  using this rhetoric   It's simply not true.

I am not posting this to try to be an ass, I have sympathy  for those who suffered due to this tragic event, but i think it is important to point this out  because you guys seem to think that you live in a nation that is paragon of freedom, and it is just not the case, and you guys have to know this  first  if you really want to become one.

This.  Its statements like this that make me ashamed to be an American sometimes.

For one example, most of the states dont even allow the freedom for same sex marriage.

nothing new here. it happens in every mmo since the beginning of time.

its in SE's best interest to nip this stuff on the bud, so Im sure they will. The game is barely a month old, lets hold off on the Doom&Gloom ok?

No, it was in their best interest to go out of their way to prevent or at least limit it from happening in the first place, their failure to do so is not really excusable, this isn't their first time to the rodeo.

People need to stop apologizing for development houses and start holding them to the higher standards they should be.

After all, this is a P2P game, what exactly are you getting for your money?

Improved security and playing experience should darn well be at the top of the list.

At the same time, it does happen in every MMO.  I've not played one yet that doesn't have this kind of stuff.  A lot of the time it's not even RMT, it's the players themselves trying to gain any advantage they can.

You can't prevent this stuff, it's going to happen.  You do have to be firm with the ban stick though and quickly before their items hit the market.

Seriously.  Prevention is impossible, especially for a game with this kind of popularity.

Getting on the developer for this just makes you look like someone with unrealistic expectations.

Now a better chat filter, THAT is what you can get on SE about.

questing, crafting, and rollin' in the gold.

So an MMO that's solo-friendly would also be ideal, but having an active community would be aces for down the road. PvP isn't much my thing, nor role play.

Definitelly GW2. It feels so much better than the traditional ! quest since the entire game revolves around dynamic questing. Solo friendly but grouping is actually fun as well. There are no raids tho. Still worth every penny. Crafting isnt as good as FF14 but is better than the rest of the traditional crafting out there as well and it has a nice discovery feature like Skyrim where you mix some materials to discover new craftings. Its a fun game.

MMO-wise i cant recommend anything else based on what you want other than WoW and FFXIV:ARR. Nothing else right now in the market is as good.

I don't really like GW2.

However i consider it quite easily the best MMO released in the last 9 years.  i just very strongly dislike the whole no-trinity thing (at least the way GW2 has done it) and the combat lacks the depth Im used to in a game like WoW or EQ2 (this so far is a major drawback to action combat).  But instead of like some people I dont say GW2 SUX because it doesnt.  its extremely well made.  It just wasnt designed for a player like me in mind.  Maybe its designed for you, op?

When i jump to the game, i want to play everytime i want, without qeues and any kind of restrictions  :)

Wait untill now, can wait a few more days.

I would then wait until the first free month is over and since they added another week to that I would say wait till the 30th or the first.  As I still get some small queues during the day on leviathan at least.  And that's before they resumed sales of the game.

The free month being over is meaningless.   People who dont renew generally dont keep logging in until the very last day, that would signify they like the game and would most likely sub

I need to read more about the EQ2 membership options. Is Gold the only way to go, or can you enjoy the game for a good long while on Free/Silver?

This depends entirely on you.  The content is all unlocked until much higher up.  However you cant equip the best gear without being gold or purchasing an unlocker (for 33 cents, or less if you buy your station cash on double days).  Also EQ2 has tiers of spells, and you cant use the highest tier as a silver member.  However, using fabled gear and master spells is 100% unnecessary until max level.  You don't need it.  the option many people (subscribers) use for low/mid levels, crafted gear/spells, is available to use.  So you can use that.

What people tend to not like is getting a dungeon drop (occasionally a quest reward) they cant use.   If you think you wouldn't mind this, then the system should work for you.  I would recommend getting the silver upgrade for 5 bucks though.

Now at high level:

If you only have one character using the unlockers in the long run will be cheaper than a sub, provided you dont waste them on very minor upgrades.

Also, you can but game time (called Krono) from other players.  If you like to try and make money you could make it your goal to earn enough for the Krono each month and play as gold for free.  it will take some time to get there and youll likely have to go gold at some point to do it the first time, but its an option.

If you want to play completely for free, with no hassle, than Rift is best for that.

Weird how the game has been only out for a few weeks and alot of level 50's already? Played in beta but never pre-ordered. Looking to get the game now or in the following days leading to this weekend.

Welcome to every MMORPG the last few years.  FFXIV was actually slower to 50 than most of the recent games.

Although the initial content is holding up better than recent games.  The first raid isnt until 2.1, but the hardest group content still has yet to be beaten.  Rift's initial raid content was cleared within two weeks.

I played on low pop servers and low pop games before and they are really not that bad. The real issue is population stability. If people are quitting left and right it is no good regardless of population.

Very good point. Churn can negatively affect a community. A community of 20 regulars can sometimes provide a better environment than a community of 200 where those members are coming in and leaving at a rapid rate.

I'd love to find a game with a small community of cool, friendly regulars versus something with WoW-like scope. I've heard EQ and EQ2 are more likely to fit that mold since the remaining (dwindling) player base are long-time loyalists, but then I wonder how newbie-friendly that population would be. Any suggestions would be welcome!

EQ: not newbie friendly at all and catch up is hell.  ALso at max level EQ is a forced grouping game (mostly) which form the other thread you said you wouldnt want.

EQ2 on Antonia Bayle server is much more newbie friendly and I believe they are giving you an option to jump up to level 80 or so soon (which i wouldnt recommend, becaus ehte lower content is great).  EQ2 also has a nice mentor system so if you make friends they can downlevel to run content with you.

Really with most games its about finding the right guild/meeting the right people.

  • How do you like your combat system? Action based or traditional tab targetting? Or maybe something in between Perhaps you don't really mind either?
  • How much influence does the story play in your gaming? Do you need a strong main plot or you are more into living into a lore heavy world as opposed to playing a personal story?
  • How much of a crafter are you? Do you enjoy the process or looking more into the resulting wealth, regardless of the system used?
  • How much influence does a strong or weak community play in your gaming? (this one can be very subjective even for the same mmorpg depending on server)
  • Do you value solo gameplay over group gameplay? How big a group/raid are you interested in participating in?
  • How much time do you generally spend per week in an mmorpg? (This usually affects the longevity, since recent titles have less content compared to older ones)
  • If you have to prioritse a theme, what would you pick first? For example, fantasy, science fiction, wasteland, horror, super heroes, steam punk, etc.
Questions in no particular order. I may post more if I can think of any. Still, you can very accurately pinpoint specific mmorpgs if you can answer them.

Hey Xasapis! I'll give your Qs my best shot:

- Graphics (modern or otherwise) aren't the biggest concern, though I'm much more used to playing games with a Western look and feel. Honestly can't think of anything I've played in the anime/chibi genre, with the exception of Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon many, well, moons ago. ;)

- WoW is the only tab-targeted game I've played, and I got into that grove but I'm perfectly comfortable with action based targeting as you would find in games like Fallout, Mass Effect, etc.

- Lore isn't something I've ever been particularly compelled by. Yes, I'm guilty of only skimming quest text and not delving too deeply into back story.

- Always enjoyed crafting in WoW, both for personal use/gain and for the selling prospects. Amassing gold - even if I eventually ran out of things to spend it on - was one of my favorite "side games" in WoW.

- A friendly, chill community with low drama would be aces. To that effect, a smaller community (and subsequently, fewer and lesser populated servers) isn't something that would turn me away, assuming that those people were still active in the game and amenable to newbies.

- I'm a solo gamer at heart, though I eventually came to enjoy grouping in WoW, particularly when my small guild was primarily leveling at an even pace. Required grouping, and lots of it, would generally turn me off.

- Time per week, I couldn't say. Really just depends on how compelling the game is.

- Theme priority would be Fantasy, first and foremost. Then perhaps sci-fi?

LOTRO sounds like a best fit to me, with EQ2 and Rift in the running

two other things:

do you like housing?  EQ2 is by far tops in the genre with Rift the next best (and Rift;s housing was heavily based on EQ2's)

do you like achievements?

If so than bump Rift up to top slot.  Rift's biggest down side (imo) is that its shallow and generic but not sure if you would care about that.  It will be the most familiar to you coming from WoW.

In terms of community its EQ2 > LOTRO > Rift

Wow...do we differ in opinion on SWTOR - I find that game to be terrible in comparison to FF ARR and I'm a really big Star Wars fan...so it was doubly tough for me. I think you're wrong about the 1 month die down...I think the game will continue to grow and get better and has the best "potential" of any MMO I've played in years.

Now...this potential could be squandered if SE fails to come up with a very good, meaningful 1st patch come November/December - and I'll have plenty enough to keep me busy until then. Time will indeed tell.

The launch was too big not to have a one month die down.  i dont think it will be as drastic as most other recent games, but it will happen.

One big advantage FFXIV has:  one of the first groups to jump ship from both SWTOR and Rift were the PvPers.  This group never joined FFXIV in the first place.

IGN reviews - lulz

http://www.ign.com/games/star-wars-the-old-republic/pc-816935

9/10

IMO SWTOR was 7/10 for the first month, after that 6/10

FFARR is a much better game (initially) and is a better game after a month, but suffers from lack of content and a very small world.

When I started FFARR itr felt like 8.5/10, after I hit 50 feels like 7/10

Hehe...yeah..that review may have been skewed by the reviewers nerd-love for Star Wars. What REALLY hurt SWTOR more than anything was utter lack of content added in subsequent patches and a failure to fix some glaring technical problems along with a rather boring game world...bad crafting system...etc etc.

FF ARR will go the same way if SE doesn't come through with it's planned patch in November with Housing....etc:

http://zantetsuken.net/news/final-fantasy-xivs-patch-future-2-1-2-2-and-beyond

Everyone agree about how bad EA and BW handled SWTOR after launch, till the server merge and the anouncement of content updates every 45-60 days, now the game is actually good, and probably with a few more updates, like the space pvp xpac or dlc, the game will be close to be that SWTOR mmo that everyone was waiting. My point is, MMOs need time but FF need and update pretty fast or they gonna lose an isane amount of players after the free month.

This!

But seriously. Let's be honest. Final Fantasy had good sales as no other high-budget MMOs have come out recently. It has a niche market, and you will see people leaving the game fairly fast.

And to be honest, FF is not a tripleA game. It has no staying power, and is largely unvoiced. I give it a 7/10 tops. It is incomplete, and lacks what other games consider vital.

On the other hand, I've been playing SWTOR for more than a year now, and I cannot shake it. I will NOT sub to this low-budget FF game, and I demand quality for me to justify spending money.

While I do agree that putting things behind a paywall, even for subscribers is a bit harsh, a lot has to be said for the story, and immersiveness of SWTOR.

Some people might like FF: ARR, but I certainly do not.

Let me provide some facts:

1)It has slow, and dumbed-down combat at-least for the first 20-30 levels(Even worse than Rift).

2)The quests are insignificant, click here, do this type of thing.

3)Quests are largely unvoiced, and when it is they have not even bothered with lip syncing.

4)Lack of PVP(I know FF has not had PVP historically, but this is supposed to be a big title.)

5)Generally the game feels incomplete, small and uninspiring.

They are riding a IP wave, and the game will die down once every bodies 1 month free pass runs out.

If this is a re-release, I cannot begin to think how awful the original was.

The irony is this is coming from someone who has played SWToR over a year.

"fact" 1 also applies to SWTOR, which also has dumbed down content.  the GCD may be faster, but that doesnt make the combat any better.

"fact" 2 also applies to SWTOR.  The class story lines are great but the individual quests are mostly mundane.  The main storyline in FFXIV is good, and the class quests are entertaining (not deep like SWTOR, but thats where the main story is)

fact 3 (which is the first to actually be a fact) can be a negative to SWtOR because many (I am not one btw) feel that the voice overs for all the mundane quests is terrible and they just spam spacebar.  Its tough to dispute that this was a giant waste of resources.

fact 4 (again, an actual fact) is a 'who cares' for most.  And its coming anyway.

"fact" 5 (not even close to a fact) is especially laughable coming from someone playing SWTOR for a year.  SWTOR featured tiny planets and overall probably less real estate than FFXIV.  SWTOR was also in much worse shape at launch than FFXIV when it lacked things such as guild banks or UI editing options.  these are the signs of an unfinished game.  Also, its not like SWTOR had a ton of endgame content either.

And the only reason SWTOR still exists is its IP.

I dont mean to dump on SWTOR, but this is why people's opinions on this site are mostly garbage.  You are disliking a game for flaws that were even more pronounced in your game of choice.  pot/kettle/black

And you mention what you consider to be the bad points, but you dont counter it with the good points, such as the crafting system, the armory system, the cities, the fact that the zones actually hold more than 100-200 people, etc

I disagree. Most of us have played many MMORPG's over the years which give us experience with this genre. I'd prefer honesty over hyberbole.

I dont see many honest, hyperbole free reviews on this site.  Either positive or negative.

(Been contemplating trying EQ2, but I imagine there may well be a mass exodus when Next comes out?)

Likely not since EQN is designed to be almost nothing like EQ or EQ2, which are nothing like each other.

And Everquest 2 is absolutely the game you should try.  It has better crafting than its themepark kin (except for FFXIV), the largest world, and amazing housing.  It has the same assortment of tedious quests, but it also has long quest chains that tke you around the world.  It has the best racial variety, and the best class choices.  And it has a high female population so you wont be swimming in a sea of sausage (WoW has a fairly high female percentage too).

Only downside is the f2p model can be offputting to some people, but its more than manageable and really the game is worth a sub anyway if you decide you like it.
