Like most others, definitely Guild Wars 2.

It looks like it can compete with any MMO on the market, but happens to be without a monthly fee. Yes please

This reads like a commercial for the game.

If they refuse to display any sort of numbers or statistics I find it hard to drum up any interest for this news.

If you're looking to advance a random numerical ladder in small scale gameplay, MMO's are not the best genre for it

APB was competely awful, so no surprise there.

The only thing it had going for it was customization of avatars

I have been experiencing what many would term "burnout" for several, several months. I did the standard fare fix for this malady promoted by most gamers... I unsubbed to every mmo that I was currently playing and took a couple months off. For clarification purposes, I did not / do not subscribe to multiple mmo's at the same time, rather I game hop from one to the other, month to month. I have been doing this for a while, which is what made me think I was suffering from burnout in the first place.

ATM, I have no desire to return to any mmo currently on the market. I mean I have that feeling of nostalgia when I think back on titles like DAoC, or AC, Eve, or even the 800 gorilla- that- must- not-be-named. But, I no longer hear the siren song beckoning me to return. I'm afraid that I am no longer the gamer I used to be!

Has anyone else experienced (or are currently experiencing) this change of gaming perspective?

most MMO's on the market are either old or completely horrible games

so  yeah, no shit. I am surprised you lasted this long

Yes, of course we will see better graphics in the future.

Crysis 2 looks about on par with Crysis, so I don't know why you even bring it up.

We already have the capability to create amazing graphics, we're just waiting for the hardware to catch up to the average consumer. Once more powerful graphics cards and processors enter the market (and they do every year) we'll see increases in graphical quality just like we have over the past years.

We are NOWHERE NEAR the cap for stunning visuals yet, and I'd say we're still at the beginning of the journey when it comes to it in games. Everything from animations to effects to facial animations and textures and shaders are still in their infancy.

I remember wondering in 2008 about which game - AOC or WAR - would be the greatest success. At first it looked like AOC was going to be the clear loser after a poor launch.

I guess now that AOC has a big expansion coming out and WAR is basically in maintenance mode, AOC has come from behind in this match-up. I have to give Funcom props for pulling a 180 in terms of gameplay and stability.

BTW I'm not currently playing either game but I'm seriously considering coming back for the expansion.

I don't understand your logic. AoC is only surging right now because of an expansion. WAR has not yet had an expansion, so we can't compare the two yet. Before the news of the expansion, AoC was in maintenance mode as well.

Once WAR gets its expansion we can see which game will "win", even though it is a silly competition to win. Also, Funcom didn't pull a quick 180 on anything since it took them 2 horrible years to get where they are today. And the game still has an overbearing amount of issues to work out.

The No.1 issue with AoC is gameplay. It's just not particularly fun. I don't think they'll ever solve that issue.

Noo, it wasn't in maintenance mode, that is an outright lie.

In the time from launch to now Funcom added a few new dungeons and new zones to solve the level gaps, made a number of class balance changes, enhanced the guild and guildcity options and added PvP content, next to the general work of fixing a lot of the bugs and problems that were there at launch: that doesn't sound like maintenance mode to me.

So did WAR so how can you say WAR is in maintenance mode and AoC isn't?

Besides, a lot of the content AoC added (pvp system, questzone,  armors, quests) should have been there from the very start since the game was a horrible mess without them at launch. Comparably, WAR launched with at least two to three times as much content as AoC and still keeps adding new stuff like armorsets and zones and dungeons.

Not sure what your problem is. Roll on a PVE server?

Be warned though that Tortage is special and that once you leave, it becomes a much more standard MMO.

Does DDO online have over 300.000 people playing it? If not, they are nowhere near the third spot since other MMO's do, and they are not f2p.

Short answer? No.

2011 looks much brighter when it comes to MMO's, however.

My first impression is that Funcom released an expansion that only seems to contain faction grinds.

So if you like to kill thousands of mobs and grind all day for marginal rewards, this is the expansion for you.

I will be fair and say that I think the new zones are better than the old zones, though. Still, AoC is very much devolving into a pure grindfest right now.

No not at all

great argument

Returning to AoC after about a years absence.

My first impression is that Funcom released an expansion that only seems to contain faction grinds.

So if you like to kill thousands of mobs and grind all day for marginal rewards, this is the expansion for you. Personally I am very disappointed. I don't like grinding, and I am a casual player as well so all this expansion does is ensure that I will not be able to play the game. The game was already heavily biased towards large guilds and established players and now even more so.

In the end, if I wanted to grind mobs all day for ugly loot for no apparent reason, I would go play a free asian MMO or something.

I will be fair and say that I think the new zones are better than the old zones, though. Still, AoC is very much devolving into a pure grindfest right now. I would never want to pay a monthly fee for this and I currently really regret the purchase.

If the game had fun PvP (minigames, sieges, open world pvp etc) then I could see how this expansion could be a boon to some players as they could spend time  grinding PvE to further themselves in PvP. But PvP in AoC is horribly dull at best, so really, what's the point?

age of conan is still pretty bad

PvP is a joke. The only thing the game offers is a mediocre leveling experience from 1-79. Crafting/PvP/Raiding is all horrible beyond that.

We never left "old school". We just simplified it.

It's time for real "new school". Enough of this archaic and formulaic "Quest, Level, Dungeons" BS. Show us something new, developers!

I got tired of CoH very quickly. I thought Champions Online was even worse. That game had no soul at all.

I have no faith in Cryptic.

I don't think any developer is going to lower himself to that kind of shit and make such game, sorry bro!

lol

In what naive blue eyed little world do you live in

A big Lotro fan are we?

I personally really hope WAR gets an expansion, and soon. The game suffers with the old content, but if they can deliver what the fans crave in a potential expansion, I'd return to that game in a heartbeat.

If there are any gaming gods out there, please let them shine their light on this creation.

It sounds so beautiful
