I've played online roleplaying games with permadeath, PLUS where metagaming was forbidden. That worked pretty good, it was some hardcore RP servers on NWN.

I'd love to know how you do it in MMOs. Is it for RP or for the adrenaline rush?

I wonder how many of these you'll find at EB... most have free trials or is F2P.
I can speak only of the game I really know, Ryzom.

1. Ryzom is challenging from the start, especially if you solo it. Two players should do fine in most situations.

2. Ryzom is has skills, and you can level everything. It's more efficient to make a traditional party with at least a damage dealer and a healer. But you can swap roles as you wish.

3. Don't really know. The interesting PVP is wars over outposts, I have very little experience of that.

4. The armor has an "alien" look, each race have 3 different types of armor in different colors. Not the most varied armor these days.

5. Yes. But not on the free to play area

6. Ryzom isn't heavily populated, sometimes it feels a bit empty.

7. It's completely configurable.

I've played the game for two years, I understand how you felt lost joining the mainland. It took me 2 trials (back when the trial was limited to 2 weeks on mainland, instead of unlimited time in the trial area) and I had just left a very quest oriented game (WoW). I tested the missions but they were so generic that I couldn't figure out WHY to play the game.

Eventually though, I managed to leave the Matis capital and sneak down to Fleeting Garden. I overlooked the valley filled with mobs; predators hunting herbivores, herds trying to flee the predators or deciding to cooperate to survive. That was great, I love that and no other game simulates wildlife like that.

As always when you join a guild, try to determine if they have players around your level and/or do guild hunts at regular basis. Most guilds are fairly rich, so don't join for the free stuff you will get anyway. You will get lots of guild invites, so think it over.

Soloing is doable on mainland, but you'll die more often and regaining your strength takes longer time.

For what it's worth, it sounds more like Roma Victor than Ryzom. In RV you have lots of skills to train, but when you neclect some skills in favour of others, the neclected skill will start to drop.

Just wait for Tabula Rasa. If you want to kill giant insect-like creatures today play Ryzom.
Starship Troopers don't have the deepest background story really, not much to build a game around- except bug squashing.

Not being of much help here, but the now discontinued game Seed had timebased training. It has it's good and bad sides; you don't have to try to catch up with friends playing more than you - but you may lose some motivation with timebased training.

Yeah, that struck me as odd in the OP too. Maybe skillbased as in "player skill" rather than character skill?

You should try Ryzom for a skillbased game that is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy. It is still primarily PVE, so I don't know if it suits someone looking forward to Darkfall.

There has not been many news about Ryzom on MMORPG.COM's news page for a very long time. Before the bankrupcy Nevrax released, at least, some kind of news every other week here.

Gameforge could do better, in my opinion.

Dear Laura,

I don't think your professor ever (role)played an elf in a MMORPG. What he says might be true in a singleplayer game, but, to me, it looks like certain kind of players are drawn to certain classes and races. A community of elf priests is different from games where you "are a spaceship". For better or worse, settings do matter.

It's easier to relate to what we know, and it affects roleplay and general immersion. We all know how a drunk dwarf behave, don't we? But how does a bumblebee who had too much nectar behave? (Hmm... maybe they behave like a drunk dwarf actually)

I think you might be wrong there, Acridiel/Madsam. If you want to play the free trial you can't do it on an account that has been upgraded before. And if you want to play Jaguar on a new (free) account you have to start the old account again, delete the toon, unsub and start a new free account. It will cost you atleast one month's fee either way.

Dofus have a similar free trial deal as Ryzom, with one difference - once you unsub you can still play the characters, but only in a small area.

The word fanboi is used whenever someone is out of real arguments. Come on, it's entertainment we're discussing on this forum, and therefore EVERY POST is subjective.

You MMORPG.com-fanbois!

Welcome to planet Atys!

Glad you like it. Crafting is even more complex than that, there are a myriad of different types of raw materials, which can be of different grade and QL (level). I'm not good at math, but I think there are several hundred combinations to make simple lowest level light boots. Some crafters are truly amazing, and they are keeping their best recipes as secret.

And, post-trial (on the mainland) nothing REALLY demand that you group, except boss hunting and outpost battles. Teaming up makes your progress faster, because of higher survivability and less downtime to regain your strength. But that is really a non-issue, you will get lots of guild invites very soon when you come to the mainland. Even the town of Zora is an active place nowadays.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games
When you look at lists of best selling games you'll see that sex and nudity is almost completely absent. Sex will get you headlines but not the sales.

Now, maybe a Conan game wouldn't feel right without girls showing skin, I don't know. I've just only seen the Schwarzenegger movies, never read the novels...

I'm not a regular, so my answers might not be completely accurate. I'm sure an actual player will correct my errors eventually...

1) If you play as barbarian, yes. Romans don't kill each other in the game.
2) One of your equipped items (random) can be looted.
3) Nope. The game aims for realism.
4) No
5) Yes
6) No
7) If you have enough skills for it
8) Mainly first person but not what you call a "shooter"
9) Landmarks and a "sense of direction" skill
10) Yes
11) No classes. The game is skillbased
12) Skillbased. (And fun is subjective, RV is not "fun enough" for me)
13) No ;)
14) I believe they roam, but I've never seen any creature else than NPC trainers, guards and merchants
15) There are no "epic" gear. A new player can compete (in PVP)
16) Nope

I'd play Dofus if it wasn't for

1) some areas are infested with player-merchants spamming the chat their sales. make it a mouseover thingie.
2) quite a few rude players. look like a common trick is to kill the lowbie before you engage the mobs.

but i love the art direction and the tactical turn based combat

I use to try to make a voice for my character when I play tabletop actually. It's easier for me to get "in character" that way.

But I do that in my native language Swedish, trying out the same thing in English would be horrible... (or horriblier than my native language atleast).

Why don't I use Ventrilo? Main reason, my wife would laugh at me and call me a nerd if I did. ;)

Using Ventrilo to determine if someone is a real girl or not? I really don't want to know - people play games for a myriad of reasons, not just as a dating service.

Wouldn't AO2 split the playerbase and leave the loyal players with dying servers? Playing MMO is a longtime commitment to many players.

MMORPG is all very well a good game for rough girls, but not for delicate boys.
