Concerns after playing P3

I agree with the op. He is dead-on. Personally I don't think the game is a failure, but I don't think it has a lot of long term appeal for the general masses.

Reborn is a beautiful world. I love just walking about in it. However my normal choice for leveling is doing quests which most often involve combat. Since a lot of my time in the game will be spent doing combat, I need to be able to enjoy or at least find it kinda interesting. Reborn fails at combat for me. I've heard at higher levels its better, but I'm not going to spend hours or days doing something I don't like on the off chance it might get better. Maybe they will add skill cooldowns and I'll end up being okay with it, but right now. I have no interest. It seems like there isn't much depth to making a class your own. In Rifts I can mix and match classes to get what I want and I don't have to regrind each class to do it. Plus there is a skill tree for each class. Does FF have anything like that besides a narrow range of subskills? It has Old School features. To me it looks like TSW or SWToR all over again. It had a ton of money spent in development, so its going to need a fairly high level of sustained subs to keep itself going. I don't see that happening in todays marketplace. Its on 2 systems and its got the FF ip, so its going to sell a lot of boxes. But sub number 4, 6, 8 months later? Plus we don't know how console uses will react to playing a fee to Sony to be online and a sub fee. It looks like ftp mmos won't need membership, but Reborn isn't ftp. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out. |

Complaining about something they are given for free is what mmo players do best.

First impressions of beta phase 3

Originally posted by Theocritus Reborn has a LOT more money in development than FFXI. Look at ToR. It needed X amount of subs. It sold a LOT of boxes, but it was unable to hold onto enough of its subs so it had to find a different way to make money. This is the Age of FTP. The risk is releasing a sub game. Will a lot of people buy the box? Adding in consoles, yes. How many people will they retain as the months go on? I doubt enough to fill in the massive money pit they have. Keep in mind, they made a game and it failed. They went back and redid it (much more than what SWG did). I can't imagine the cash that's gone into this project. Subs are an over time type of income generator. In today's market with so many choices that have little to no entry barrier and with so many more continuing to flood the market the average player is sampler not a stayer. FF is betting the bank that they can not only get a lot of people to buy the box, but that most of those people will stay on long term. Its not going to happen. The good news is. This shouldn't effect any of you. You like the game. You are willing to sub. Even if it goes ftp. I'm sure it will have a sub option, so I don't see a down side.

First impressions of beta phase 3

I will give my opinion based on what is all ready public. Its a beautiful world set in an old-school mmo. You have to buy the box and pay a sub. Its going to be on pc and consoles (that should help sales) I don't see it as anything ground-breaking or standing above all other mmos. It has one heck of a lot of money poured into it (including the first version), so it needs to do well I would think. I have little doubt fans will be gushing over it, but I don't see it appealing to the general masses or average console players in great numbers. My guess is it will go btp or ftp within a year of release (they have a tier pay system all ready). Or sooner if Console players yell to much about paying sub fees. I have nothing overly negative to say about the game. If you like that style of mmo, you're enjoy this game. |

[Review] Scarlet Blade: A Shameful & Degrading Experience
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 6/11/13 12:57:45 PM
Breasts, naked bodies, etc there is nothing wrong with any of that, unless its only purpose is to exploit. There are lots of games that use the female body to titilate its male players giving unrealistic and unhealthy expectations of how women should look and act. None of those games are doing a service to anyone. SB exploits women to a whole new level comparatively, which is why its singled out more often. Its sort of funny that because Devs make games like this, it chases real women away from the genre thereby limiting the chance for guys to interact with them. Or maybe to many male gamers are just afraid of actual woman, so the Devs give them a safe alternative. In either case I don't see it as a good thing. The review itself seemed like more an editorial. I didn't learn much about the game. It mentioned the two factions, but were the classes named? |

[Column] Marvel Heroes: F2P Isn't a Charity
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 6/06/13 12:28:09 PM
As far as ftp goes look to itunes. You pay a little bit of money and get a song. People end up buying a lot of songs and spending more money than they might have otherwise. The problem with some ftp mmos is finding the right amount to charge. A bag for 20? A mount for 30? Is it better to have some people buy items that cost a lot or lots of people buying items that cost a little? I think ftp games are still trying to find that balance. |

The problem is, it was made to be a money pit. Its not a very good game. Okay fun for a little while, but gets boring fast and the idea of leveling two or more heroes is depressing. In beta they wanted to make it so bought hero tokens gave a random hero. So pay 20 and good luck getting what you want. What does that tell you about the mindset of these people? |

Of course people can say such things (most amazing game ever!!) because anyone who has actually played the game and isn't blinded by fandom can't argue and point out why they are wrong without breaking the NDA.

I'm going to rush to max level too then I can complain that I'm bored and there is nothing to do. On top of that after playing a few weeks I'll do a chargeback to get my money for the box. :p

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn: Release Date Announced
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/23/13 6:13:19 PM
The market is what the market is. Its not a question of what's right or wrong, better or worse. Right now the market(western) is heavy into the ftp(btp). Hate it or love it. It is what it is. Going ptp means having a smaller playerbase. It means making less money. It means watching that base slowly decline, since the people most interested in the game and willing to sub will be playing the game at or near release. If the devs weren't willing to keep 1.0 up with its small and shrinking playerbase, what makes anyone think they will do it for reborn? |

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn: Release Date Announced
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/23/13 3:12:34 PM
Is funny that rifts one of the last big AAA titles is going ftp yet FF thinks it can go ptp and make a profit. Not only did it pour tons of money into making 1.0 it went back and remade the game. How much money has been spent in the development of this game? How do they figure on getting their invest back quickly when ptp has been met with at best a luck warm reception? Star Wars the biggest ip failed at ptp, yet FF thinks it can make it? Should we start taking bets now on how soon it goes ftp or btp? Its all ready in the pricing. Entry level at 12.99 becomes Free. |

Levels are good and bad. Having a goal and feeling that you are making progress is good. No being able to play with your friends/guild because of a difference in level is bad. |

The faster people can get to cap the sooner they can complain that there is nothing to do. If they tried to enjoy themselves what would they have to bitch about?

Xp comes to fast in this game. There is so much to do and I end up leveling past it. There is no reason to rush to 60 and every reason to enjoy your time getting to cap. Lower xp isn't going to stop my use of Foundry, I will probably use it more.
