hmm feedback on events. Sure, its a great idea. Not new since there are mmo's out there which already has it or is coming out with it. Finding things via mining seems generic, and a random chance of it appearing too seems generic. But then again, this is because I'm having to assume how it would work based on the story you've given me.

This is what I understand of your MMO so far:

1. It has a story

2. Several factions in the game

3. Factions are part of an event which will occur only once and affect game world based on what each faction does

4. Things related to event will need to be found. Such as from mining, or exploring

None of the above really makes me want to play the game. Firstly, an event in MMO is not new. Some MMOs already have it and some has it coming. Why would I choose yours over theirs?

Finding a treasure map is nice and all, but if mining is boring in your game, and no one bothers mining, then no one finds the treasure map.

This is why I'm saying you should focus more on the game mechanics. Game mechanics are not just stats, and what skills I can do. You can focus on things related to the event. For example, finding treasure map can occur if you mine. What will make mining fun that players will do mining in the first place? How will PvP occur? Is this an open world PvP or an instanced based one? What makes the event PvP more fun than the usual PvP that occurs on a regular basis or is PvP only available during an event? Are you having to develop different PvP mechanics everytime an event occurs?

Oh my God , i've write a BIG text about some things and I accidentaly hited on a "favorite" link just above the mmorpg.com tab and when i hited back , all of it has disppear :)

Bah , is morning here and I need some sleep. Will write later today :)

There is no right direction... just what you want to see in a game. However, I think a lot of people tend to focus on creating a story rather than the game core/mechanics. Since you have a general idea of the story and what you'd like to see in the game, I think you should focus on the game core and game mechanics to see how each thing would fit in the game.

Start with the simple stuff. Is it a FPS control? or third person control. Or it could even be a hack and slash control like diablo.

What does each character have in common (stas). Is it going to have stats such as strength, agility etc. Do you want it so you gain XP when you kill a mob or finish a quest or do you want it so you increase a skill each time you use it, but you don't gain xp from killing/questing.

That's what I personnally think you should focus on....but that is my own opinion.

Well , there is a direction and everything is created is has a direction, no matter if we see it right away or not. You were saying that alot of people tend to focus on creating a story rather then the game core/mechanics!  From my point of view, I think is not kinda possible to create the story , but have no idea about the core or mechanics. While I am creating the story , I am thinking how the story can have an impact in the game core, how does it affect , and such.

It will be your typical MMO control ( I still don't think a fantasy MMO ala Tera is going to be a success regarding the control ) , and each character will have in common almost all stats except that every one will have a different stats regarding their location. For exemple, if the Monk tribe players, will be in a X temple , his X stats ( or new stats ) will take a boost effect. XP gain will increase everytime you kill a mob and complete a task/quest. The "story" is not focused on levels, more so is on skills, but level will be there just because .. ( I will find an good explication tomorrow as now is morning here and I am sleepy :) )

I appreciate your opinion, but I was expected to at least share a few thoughs on the event itself ! :)

Thanks!

Hello everyone ,

I am currently writing a MMO story. No , not for a company , is just for "personal use" as of now.  Anyway , I want to combine SF with Fantasy style , where there will be 2 or 4 races ( depending on how the inspiration comes with time ) .

In the event I am currently going to talk about, I will take some exemples from my story.

So in a game with a past knowlege from little to none , there will be alot of un-answered questions as how the world evolved, how X race has come to live and so on. In this case, I was thinking to add a mix between adventure , questing and a little drama to find out some informations about the past and not only.

I am talking about some-short of a puzzle here where all 2 or 4 races will start the running for the "holy grail" . Indications, maps , tips, hints, etc will be available through out the PC faction which is neutral, from different quests, from story line, for helping X NPC, maybe from "mining" too ( meaning , while you mine , you have the chance to get a pice of a map, a pice of a paper and so on. ). In some hints/tips , there will be writings that once you get to the X location which is close to the point where you'll find the "treasure" , or if you want to find more about it, you need to light up a fire in X cave/location so you can see other informations to help you to find the next hint , the next location or the "treasure" itself. The informations will be available to all races ( of course, in different form/shape/texts/hints/etc ) and all of them will search for the same "treasure" .  There will be a black merchant , where if a player who founds out a map/pice of a paper or simple an item which will lead to the "treasure" can sell it . The black merchant will be "world-wide" , meaning all the races will be available to sell or buy different things between them. But that means , if someone find out a "treasure" item and try to sell it to the other race, will be catalogate as a "traitor". Why? While there will be no info regarding who tries to sell it or buy it , his race may lose some important reward as the winning race ( doesn't matter if is group of 2 or an army of 500 that will hunt the "treasure" ) will get faction rewards and not only.

If the X race reaches the "last zone" before getting to the "treasure", there may be different actions like : a puzzle word , 2-6 players needs to stand in a different spot so a door can be open, fighting with a boss and so on. In the end , a world-wide message is letting everyone know that X race and X group/player/alliance/tribe/etc , have found the "treasure" and is rewarded with X goods.

The event will run out for 2-3 weeks and fights may happen between races in their run to get the "treasure", then after a week another one will start with a different story , a different locations, different hints/tips etc.

Now , as I said before, i've taken for exemple my story because I've described my world to be VERY large where enginering plays an important role in-game, and will play in this event too.  There are other aspects into this event and what i've described is just an exemple, an idea about it.

The reason why I've writed this post here is to get some short of a feedback to know if I am in the right direction.

Thanks for reading!

PS: English is not my native language, so if there are any grammatical errors or words, then have mercy :)

Have you tried typing "OK", without the quotation marks into the field just above the greyed out OK button?

I tried "OK" , "Accept" and I eventried using the korean letters for those.

There is a "bug" it seems when the game does not start in full screen as in your case. What can you do is just try login to in-game with any character, but keep in mind, that when you try to click OK or typing the PIN number or any other option you want to chose, put your mouse 2-3cm down from the , OK buttom for exemple and when you see that the buttom goes a little lighter, it means you can then click on it. So once you entered in-game press ESC then go to option, graphic and chose full-screen, then you can start using your mouse normaly.

PS: At the pin window , well ... :) if there is number 2 and the below one is number 3 and you want click on number 2, go with your mouse on number 3 and click it ! Same goes for any of your pin number. Remember, click 2-3 cm down from the buttom you want to click on it :)

EDIT: About Aion loading like 5 mins till it gets to the loading screen, just disable your anti-virus for 2-5 mins as I see that sometimes, the antivirus start scanning the files Aion needs to start.

Buying the game gives you a 30 free days gametime and after that it's monthly sub.

You can buy Aion with 50% off from direct2drive.com so that means you are buying Aion at a monthly sub price !

Enjoy! ;)

You don't actualy need to care much at your level about what mana stones to add to your gear. However you can add HP/MB .

Later, depending on how would you want to play your class, try focusing on HP , MB and/or MA ( Magical Accuracy ) .

MA is very important for you later as you level ! In PVP will make a big difference !

Names are a problem with merges.

Player names - guild names.

Say you have Bob on Black Server and Bob on White Server.

They decide to merge Black and White into a Grey Server.

Which Bob gets to stay Bob?  How will people know which Bob they are dealing with...?

What if one is a GOOD Bob and one is a BAD Bob?  The BAD Bob, if he/she got the name, could wreak a little bit of havoc there, no?

Really was surprised that they dropped out 19 more servers for NA.  There were already 39 shards.  Did they really expect to have half of the people from the pre-order headstart show up today as new accounts?

Given that a 60 some person queue is only around 6 minutes now, there are 20 shards with a queue ranging from 7 to 403 (the top 6 waits are on PvP servers).  There are 18 shards with low pops...

...given a 5-10 minute queue, I would see no reason to reroll on a low pop server.  The disadvantages simply outweigh the advantages.

If I go back to Reclaimer, there are 182 people in queue with around a 24 minute wait.  If I stay on my 4th server, Carrion - there is no queue to login - but the avg wait for a WF is 23 minutes.

Hey Bob!

Also, regarding the final comment:  Did it reinvent the wheel?  Not really.  But then, who’s to say it needed to?
Oh I dunno, maybe the concept which is called innovation and which is severly lacking in the MMORPG genre?
As the article says, the only innovation this game has is the possibility to handle loads of people at the same place without crashing/lagging either the client nor the server. But that is more a technical achievement than innovation.
This game is basically Aion for the west. I.e. a modern and further polished version of WoW.

People still don't understand what innovation is.
Innovation is not creating something brand new. It is taking something that exists and improving on it in a way that is new.
So, yes, rift can handle a lot of people at the same time. It also changes a part of the game play. Becauswe, apart from perhaps Tabula Rasa, (which I didn't play long so can't really expand upon its events) it includes world events that players need to deal with or else parts of the world are closed off.
Whether or not someone likes this, hates this, think it needs to go farther or some other thought, I don't believe I've played a game that had this type of event happening and with such frequency. So that itself feels innovative to me.
I've tried quite a few of these games and can't really recall one that has this on this scale. Oh, there might be one, but it's not wow, not lotro, lineage 2, guild wars, vanguard, Final Fantasy 14, Aion, EQ2, AoC, city of heroes/villians, Champions online,. Allods, Perfect world, heck, the list goes on.
Maybe EVE has something like this?
This game does fall squarely in the WoW or even EQ flavor of games. But it doesn't entirely play like them because of this feature. Like it or hate it. And that's an innovation.

Trion haven't innovated. They've stolen or diluted. Nothing in this game is a true innovation of anything that's come before. Even the class system is basically 4 classes with extended AAs.
There is simply nothing innovative about Rift, unless you mean their innovative ability to dilute the MMO as a genre.

If that's the road you're going to go down, then innovation is now impossible in the mmorpg genre of games.

However, let's pick your statement apart here. Unless an mmorpg previously had 4 classes with some sort of Alternate Advancement built into the character's progression, then you've given an example of something new. Innovation - the introduction of something new.

You know, little things matter! Everywhere! In MMO's too! I don't really understand why does mmo devs can't just create a unique UI and feel of the game. Let them copy/paste 80% from the features but at least, for the good of future games, introduce little things that matters such a new UI , Mini Map , Loot , Texts . etc etc etc .They even copied the Text Designer from WoW.

When I first enter in a new mmo world, I don't want to have the same feeling when I played WoW. Why? Because I am trying a NEW MMo .

What I am trying to say is atleast give me a new feeling for playing a new game. Because the feelings you have while trying a new game matter alot.

Do I ask to much?..

Pretty good review, for the fans! But advertising this game as a "next-gen" and with lines like " We are not in Azeroth anymore" makes me wonder what the devs really want from this game. They already introduced older and very , very "wowish" feel on it. And please, don't start saying is different then WoW or War when it comes to UI , textes and such. Only a "blind fan" can say "You are wrong".

If you enjoy the game, that's fine .. I am really glad you've found your game. What I am not "agree" is the wowish feel ( while they say is not ) and "kids" texts when they advertising the game. Very amateur !

I wouldn't have minded the slow leveling pace if I didn't feel like I was forced to run the same repeatable quests over and over again just to gain XP.

Well in any game you are forced to do quests and dungeons to level. If your bored of repeats then go to another area, craft or Pvp. I think that if you take some of the focus off leveling and just play you would not feel like your being "forced".

My character isn't high enough to run any dungeons, and I'm not a big fan of crafting.

Overall, I think leveling is Aion is more of a grind than the leveling in EQ2, LotRO, WoW, and others, and I mean so in other ways than how long it takes to level.  The quests in Aion are largely quite simplistic, and in many cases, you really don't have enough original quests to level up, which makes you forced to run repeatable kill quests until you're high enough to get sent to the next quest hub.  Just wasn't all that enjoyable for me.

What level are you? Cause the first dungeon is level 25 and going once will level you. Maybe the game was not for you but really EQ grind is serious, never played Lotro, and WOW shouldn't be in the same sentence since level has been made easy -mode so you can play with your friends. Honestly, I didn' have to start doing repeatable until like level 45+.

She meant that the first group dungeon is at lvl 25! The first dungeon, which is solo .. starts at lvl 18 ;)

I think "SuperXero89" just does not want to play the game or else, I don't know how he missed the lvl 18 dungeon! Also , saying Aion is more of a grind then let's say EQ2 or WoW it means you are doing something wrong. Specialy at lvl .. 15 or .. 17 :)

AION, A Question.

The game has become, indeed a PVE ( excluding Abyss and lvl 50 + areas where there is all the PVP now ) . Now you have a shield in Eltnen/Morhain which blocks around .. can't really remember right but I guess 60-80% if an enemy attacks you and in Heiron/Beluslan 20-40% again, can't remember right ! So I can safely say, that you can now quest in peace in any of thos zone. My brother a SM was gangked by a full party of Elyos! Well , he even killed their cleric, then runned away :)

The point is that everyone who didn't had a problem playing Aion, but was dissapointed by the : grind/gang , need to just give it another try !

Is this game's main focus PvP now ? I am just curious that if I were to go abck witll the PvE be enough. I recall the crafting was brutal the random fails. I know a few higher level guildmates talked of losing millions. I cannot imagine trying to compete with those odds.

PvP happens more in the 50+ zones ! There is plenty of PvP below lvl 50 too , but not that much as when you fight on lvl 50+ zones. They add PVE content too, like single instance, increse in XP from quests and such.

Crafting has seen a significal improvment in the last patch ! http://powerwiki.uk.aiononline.com/aion/Patch+Notes+2.1.0.5 Read it !

Don't listen to the guy above me whatever is name is ( emo or something ) .

Yes, the siege lag is still there but you can have some pretty good FPS if you lower all your graphics such as spell animation! About the crashing, well, I didn't experience this before and I am not experience this now so can't actualy comment about this.

Playerbase is not dead and never been. So again, don't listen to the haters ! The game has seen a big improvment expecial on the grind part. Now you can level up through quests easily ( yes, up to 55 ). Drop rate increased as well and I can safetly say that you will make lots of kinah now! You can read the patch notes and see by yourself. Now campaign quests give like atleast double XP then before. To give an exemple : at around lvl 39-40 you have campagin quests which gives around 7 to 11 mil xp ! Normal quests that give around 1-1.5 mil xp where you need around 35 mil to lvl ( so that means 25-30 of normal quests, not campaign ones and you've DINGED ) :)

All I say is that now is far FAR more easly to level and make kinah.

Your choice!

Chon, when was the last time playing Aion? I assure you, that there is no more grind as it used to be. You can easly lvl now with quests and the rewards are alot better. Also, as I see in this patch, they are making it even easier

1.  Added or changed reward items for quests and greatly increased the general rewards for quests. (Please note that players will not receive these rewards retroactively for quests they’ve already finished.)

and

3. Reduced difficulty of the [Elyos] Miragent Holy Templar, [Asmodian] Fenris’s Fangs quests.

and

6. Greatly increased loot rate of required Expert Gathering items for Aethertapping and Essencetapping.

and

So on..

And for the others who keep bashing Aion without even playing the game, name a better game then Aion ( beside WoW ) ! ..

I heard there will be new dungeons , player housing, underwater areas, a big change in the abyss system, mounts, new graphic engine ( which will include 2 Aion clients, one with high grafic and one with normal ( as it is now ) ..

The only confirmed news is that they will not increase lvl cap, which I think this one big patch will focuse on balancing, add new gameplay between lvls and many more!

Well ,right now is 12:00 PM in Korea, so in 1-2 hours we shall receive full patch info :)

Nothing new yet, about their game .. but is a start! We should hear news about they MMO pretty soon!
