If Bioware was going to do something innovative with pvp they would have mentioned it by now.   That's the reason they keep hyping their voice overs and character story content.-- it's new and they think it's cool.  Too bad most mmorpg players couldn't care less about it.

This game, epic fail, will be. Mmmhmm, yes.

Knock off the carebear crap, please. I don't go around calling you a murderous thug, do I? Then how about you have the same respect for those that don't like PvP.

I'm entitled not to like PvP just like you are entitled to like it. We each have our preferences. And we can do it without childish namecalling.

How can any MMO fan not like PvP? What is the point of it being an MMO? The competitive spirit is lost in a game of any kind when your opponent is a computer and not a real person.

Would you only play online chess against a computer?

I disagree.

Darkfall's major failing was not its game engine. The game was stable enough, it was just the lack of content and the grind that killed Darkfall.

In fact, Darkfall may have the better MMO engine. I'm not too impressed by what MO has been able to handle thus far in terms of crashes/numbers.

Either way, Mortal Online sounds better than DF because of the content, but we'll see how much of it actually gets put in (and how it gets put in). MO hasn't done anything to warrant any real praise yet. But it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Great read and spot on.

Somebody with some creative talent really needs to create UO's natural sequel. Nobody has done it yet. Everquest came out after UO, made some cash, and everyone (especially wow) cloned it for money...

I'm still waiting for some creative people to make UO's successor. Until then, I can't stand to play any of the horrible MMOs that are currently out.

You read my mind, I've suggested the same exact thing.

It makes more sense. And the server wouldn't be bogged down because people wouldn't be in a rush to be first in line, since it'd all be random anyway. People would sign up gradually during the 2 weeks (or however long) in advance they gave us to sign up and we'd learn whether or not we got accepted into the paid beta or not.

So...MO being sold as we speak as far as I can tell.

DFO? Hello? Anyone? Bueller? Still the same web page from this morning that I can see...

MO is not being sold as we speak. Their servers are all down - deja vu.

No wonder it is getting eaten up:

I'm sure there are thousands more MO customers doing the same thing. A few DF fanboys would make no difference.

They probably should have tested this, I'm sure they saw the mess that DF was. I still think they should have let everybody enter their CC info a couple weeks in advance and then just had them click an agreement saying they agree to be charged in 2 weeks, and then just charge 10,000 people (or however many they're letting in) at random. That way, there'd be no rush to be first, since the whole thing would be random anyway.... basically using the same logic they use to let people sign up for a beta test.

OMG!  That's the rain?

It looks like some kind of effect like when you open a magic box and light is emitted from it.  I never would have thought that was rain.  Even in the context that the picture shows.

I don't know what's up with the dude who took that picture, but rain doesn't look like that at all for me (or in any of the other screenshots of it). It actually looks more like water and goes in front of, on, and behind the character. That picture makes it look pretty shitty.

The problem with the rain isn't how it looks, it's that it doesn't seem to rain for everyone even if they're standing next to one another - which is pretty retarded. It's not entirely client-side, though because it will rain for a bunch of people at the same time... so some sort of lag issue must happen where another player doesn't see the rain.

Either way, it's bugged. But it's not as ugly as that picture makes it look.

I killed alot of the low end mobs (god I hate killing npc`s) and open a few of the old treasure chest. I didn`t find or noticed anything new.

It's actually the mid-level and higher level mobs that have changed a lot... the low end mobs are mostly the same.

I wonder if it dangles?

I want to teabag all of my foes.

And vice versa... mmm.

At the moment, it's not a paid beta at all, regardless of your definition.  The preorders are not til next week, so the current reviews are from  the current totally free beta.

At the moment, no, but I wasn't talking about the present, I was talking about the future. I don't see why you guys are getting hung up on semantics. The point of my post really wasn't about whether it's paid or unpaid, It was about how the two combat reviews reveal that the game still has a long ways to go and once this July Beta (paid or not) goes live, if it's THAT raw, it may turn off a few people.

First impressions, beta or not, are important to the masses.

I agree with the OP somewhat.

People seem to be blindly saying "It's awesome" before actually trying it for themselves. It sounds potentially awesome, but also sounds like once the "cool factor" wears off - it could just end up being a huge pain in the ass.

This is one of those features I'll have to wait to try for myself before I pass judgement on it.

1. It's not  a paid beta, as you.. well, don't pay for playing. It's simply a preorder that you pay full price for. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

2. There will be no NDA, so there can't be any leaks.

Besides, all this really shows is that the devs are very honest.

Technically, no, it's not a "paid beta" since you'll get the game when it comes out, but it seems to be the only way to get in the beta at the moment, no?

As for no NDA, I didn't know that.. that's pretty cool, but just because the info coming out won't be a "leak," since there's no NDA doesn't mean that negative info that is posted won't affect the game.

These 2 "reviews" are named "Combat Reviews" and they both seem to say that combat doesn't work very well but SHOULD (as far as they know) work better in the future. Therefore, combat in it's current state is bad, but now we should hope that it gets better.

I'm looking forward to MO and am considering paying for a pre-order, but I just don't see how people are posting stuff like "I knew it! This game is going to be amazing!" based on 2 reviews that both agree that the thing they're reviewing (combat) is not working very well yet.

Am I the only one who was discouraged by these reviews? Especially the 2nd one.

The part where he says "it was very easy to start criticizing Mortal Online for being worse than Crysis, Oblivion, Mount and Blade, Age of Chivalry or any other game, but the fact that this is an MMO must always be remembered" sounds like he's making some excuses for some lackluster features (seems like PvP)?

I know the game is in the early stages, but this paid beta will definitely affect the game's future. With 10,000 people testing it, leaks will be out everywhere and if it's really that unpolished then those leaks could kill the game.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see, but it sounds like next month will be a pretty bare bones game even for a beta.

I don't trust any reviews by anyone who plays Free Realms.

If you're willing to play that "game" for more than 5 seconds, your standards for MMOs are out of whack.

To the OP:

How many games that you've either never played or have only played briefly do you post about daily? Beyond giving your impressions or review, how many of those games would post about daily just to bash and argue about?

If you're like me, the answer is probably none.

So, just think about that. Who would do that kind of thing? And there's your answer. The people who do are not normal in the head.

Housing would be cool.

It'd probably have to work the same way hamlets/cities work, though. In that, you have to find a Housing Stone and claim it, then build there.

What they shouldn't have:
no resources
no npcs to buy from
no bank
otherwise they'd be making hamlets useless.

What they should have:
They'd need a lockable door that you could lose the key to (like old UO's housing).
The ability to place NPC vendors (actually, cities and hamlets should have this as well).

5th i agree, df has made a much larger impression (perhaps moreso than 90% of games) -- as what NOT to do, or as how horrible a game can be, and how devs can successfully ignore 12 years of progress in MMOs and insist that an antiquated game is ground breaking and revolutionary...  oh, and lie lie lie about EVERYTHING...

I'm basically saying the same thing as you are.

Although, I think as much as it teaches Devs what not to do, it also shows them what they COULD do in order to make a game like DF work.

There is GOOD popularity and bad popularity. DF and AV are the laughing stock of the MMO industry. They're popular alright. They made an impression, yes, the WORST possible. Developers are actually learning to NEVER do anything like this game ever.

Argh comparing this to EvE... put down the crack pipe and open your eyes ffs.

I know, I never said it had good popularity.

Eve has been successful for what it is.

The original question was whether darkfall will affect the ability for indie games to get funded. So, after seeing Darkfall, an indie game that sounded really good on paper, but hasn't been very successful financially, will companies shy away from indie games like this? Or is Darkfall not popular enough for anybody to care?

In my opinion, the notoriety of Darkfall is big enough in the MMO Gaming community for it to have an impact. Devs can either try to learn from it and make the game they thought DF could/should be. Or they can decide they never want to explore a game like this and lean more towards WoW type games.

I never said Eve was bad or that Eve had no influence... I didn't even bring up Eve. But I think, if I were a Dev, I'd be paying more attention to DF right now than Eve.

Bonedancer is right (and plenty of people agreed with him in his thread).

It doesn't make sense to be able to bank at an enemy's city/hamlet. Also, some of the hamlets in DF are pretty shitty. They have no good resources and no security... the only benefit to owning one of those would have been the bank, but if EVERYONE can bank there, then it just means it'll turn into a Wilderness Bank... which is what a lot of Hamlets basically are now - wilderness banks free for all.

All I said was that Eve doesn't get talked about as much as DF. I didn't say DF was better (even though I prefer it to eve), I just said it made more waves in the mmo community.

Are you kidding me? Eve is mentioned in tech journals. Eve has had articles in the New York times. Eve is a well known and reported upon game. Eve politics and scandals have made real news outlets write articles. Not to mention the fanfare it's had on this site as well..

like i said.. put the crack pipe down.

Seriously too even think that DFO has had 1/10 the impact as Eve on indy mmo's is utterly assanine..

DF is currently a more popular topic than EVE and it's launch was also more noticed than EVE's.

Even as it stands on MMORPG. DF's forum has 140,000+ posts in the past 4 months and EVE's has 54,000 in the past 4+ years. Does this make DF a better game than EVE? No, it just means it is more noticeable in the mmo community, thus the OP asked if it's popularity will be good or bad for indie companies.

Also, the past 6 months (right around the time DF announced open-beta/release dates):
#2Darkfall1,017,406 Hits
#9EVE Online500,597 Hits

That's still impressive for EVE, a game that's been out for a long time, but when EVE came out, there wasn't nearly as much controversy and ballyhoo made. Again, EVE has been more SUCCESSFUL than DF thus far, but I don't think it made as big of an impression on the MMO community as DF has.

Now go ahead and tell me to "put down the crack pipe" some more.
