If you played UO for 10 years, then I'm pretty sure ANY game will be fine. :P
People quit UO because it morphed into something else, something horrible. So yeah, Darkfall should be fine. |

Anyone else starting to hate MMORPGs?

Originally posted by Irishoak Oldschool UO was considered a bit harsh. Full loot, non consenual pvp, etc... None of this exists in any big budget MMOs to my knowledge except for poorly done "PvP Servers" maybe and even then I don't think they do full loot. |

Anyone else starting to hate MMORPGs?

Blame it on Everquest. The two biggest MMOs when this whole thing started were Ultima Online and Everquest. UO, the better game, was difficult and harsh (making the "winning" feeling of it that much more rewarding). Everquest was easy and created purely to addict the consumer (a treadmill game). All the low lives became addicted to Everquest and made it the more profitable game. Blizzard saw this and modeled its game after EQ and not UO. Thus, EVERY high budget game has done the same. Until a company with a large budget mimics UO's innovation - MMOs will always suck and cater mainly to low lives who are easily addicted to leveling their characters and don't care about actual gameplay or the potential that MMOs can have. |

Originally posted by xpiher It already is a PvP only game, just with an insane grind attached. It lacks the non-pvp depth of games like old Ultima Online. There's not enough to do in Darkfall. There's not even enough PvP. Mostly, there's just the grind. That said, I see the potential in the game. If they can reduce the grind to 0 (realistic skill cap) and add more stuff to do, I'd rejoin. |

Now instead of 100 years, it will only take 30-50 years? Yay. Put in a skill cap and reduce travel grind (that may already be being done?) and I'll play. In other words, make it more like Old UO. |

OMG population increased grind recuded by 50% WTF i love you AV

I know UO, sir, and this.. is not UO. UO had no crazy grind, it had a skill cap, and recall/gating. It had shit to do. UO was a good game. Darkfall has cool aspects, but it's not complete. There's not enough to do and everyone is a "wolf" in that game. UO was fun because it mixed "wolves" and "sheep." That's how it has to be. |

Kids Can't Handle Old-School RPGs Anymore

Games aren't as hard as they used to be, that one can't really be disputed. I remember being disappointed when the first "arrows" started popping up in games - now they're basically required in every game. Every game is basically "follow the arrow" and kill stuff along the way. That said, there are still great games being made. Just wish there was more innovation going on ( especially in MMORPGs ... the worst genre of games in terms of innovation). |

Just like most MMOs that say they're like Oldschool UO, it sounds promising, but then you see little things here and there that make you realize it's more like WoW than UO. I like the housing system, though. The forced faction alignment sucks to me. I hate all RvR and faction/race stuff that games like DAOC and WoW have. Oldschool UO's "choose your own enemy" was a lot better (making Order/Chaos optional). Lack of penalties for PKing also kills it a bit. I love non-consesnual PvP, but there needs to be SOME penalty and you need to be lootable. UO's targeting/twitch combat system + sandbox style with actual stuff to do was great. It'd actually be pretty easy to replicate it, but people either go too overboard or don't do enough and end up missing the mark. :( |

Arche Age should be added to MMO list - Looks promising!

Yeah the possible grind scares me. They say they want to be like UO, though and UO had no grind. Who knows? You can build houses and stuff, so at least there'd be other things to do like in UO. |

I'm quoting what someone said about it being the new Ultima Online: Originally posted by lilmark_utsa |

Would you play a UO shard like this?

Hmm. After some research (accidently stumbling upon mostly) I see your ideas are actually part of something bigger and my interest was piqued. One cool thing I thought could serve as a "penalty" without ruining a PK's experience too much is adding an "after-life" instance. The PK would have to fight his way out of hell, battling NPC versions of all of his victims in order to resume normal play... if the PK was unable to defeat the npc versions you could always add a time-limit in which they can be set free anyway, but still, I think it'd be a fun way of "punishing" players. |

New features make me want to try again, but then I remember...
General Discussion « Darkfall 1/04/11 11:23:10 PM
I'd never catch up in this grind of a game. Add some kind of a skill cap and I bet people will finally try Darkfall out again. There should be more to an MMO than just leveling your character for eternity- that is a cheap "get them addicted" element that Darkfall doesn't need. Darkfall cheapens itself by making it such a grind. |

A lot of great ideas on what UO should have done to stay in the game. I don't know if a game as inventive as UO is ever coming to come out (on a decent budget) any time soon. Everything has gone the way of EQ/WoW. :( |

I love PvP, but I prefer a bit of a ruleset too. Makes it sane, otherwise it's just like logging in to a First Person Shooter and killing everyone, it's fun for a while, but it takes away the immersion to me, which is the selling point to an MMO. |

The reason Classic Shard will NEVER happen.
Britannia Tavern (General) « Ultima Online 12/18/10 1:18:43 AM
Pride. The new Dev Teams don't want to admit that all of their "improvements" suck and that the game was better years ago than it is now. Take a risk and swallow your pride. How hard is it to put out a server containing features that have already been developed? Amateurs have been doing it with no budget, a legit company could handle it I'm sure. |

Will PvP server have safe "towns" or areas
General Discussion « DC Universe 12/17/10 11:10:49 PM
If not, won't it just be pure chaos? That's no fun. :\ I am an old UO player where PvP was rampant, but you could chill in town and gather your thoughts, get your stuff together, and plan attacks. This is PvP at it's finest. Having "regular/more PvE" servers and "only pvp and nothing else" servers will be a huge disappointment and maybe a game killer. Pure PvP servers lack imagination/effort and are too chaotic to truly enjoy. They end up being more like "arcade" mode versions than legit games. |

You weren't really paying for the box, you were paying for early access to the game. Who gives a fuck about the box? And a Manual... are you kidding? What are you going to do with it? nobody reads manuals to online games, especially since they're dated by the time you get into the game anyway. I agree, MO is far from ready to be released... And the game looks somewhat terrible, but who cares about a dumb box... If you wanna tear apart the game, tear apart the game, but the box is fine how it is. I think a lot of you just get off on complaining about things. |

How can any MMO fan not like PvP? What is the point of it being an MMO? The competitive spirit is lost in a game of any kind when your opponent is a computer and not a real person. Would you only play online chess against a computer? |

I disagree. Darkfall's major failing was not its game engine. The game was stable enough, it was just the lack of content and the grind that killed Darkfall. In fact, Darkfall may have the better MMO engine. I'm not too impressed by what MO has been able to handle thus far in terms of crashes/numbers. Either way, Mortal Online sounds better than DF because of the content, but we'll see how much of it actually gets put in (and how it gets put in). MO hasn't done anything to warrant any real praise yet. But it's definitely worth keeping an eye on. |
