To help you out OP, someone mentioned to check your driver. Would really recommend that first as it is the most simple solution. There have been other games that have launched and cause video cards to overheat and to actually melt. Drivers and patches were released to fix the problem. If you do still have issues then you can look into a new power supply.

Looking at the recommended power supply for your video card, 450W is the absolute minimum.

Of course it's recommended to use a good PSU, it's not NEEDED but anyway on a seperate note.   That link is pretty accurate from what I seen, however new cards use far less power then those cards do so it's not as critical to have an after market PSU these days.

Measured power consumption Radeon HD 6990 (default mode)

  1. System in IDLE = 195W
  2. System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 489W
  3. Difference (GPU load) = 294W
  4. Add average IDLE wattage ~ 37W
  5. Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 331 Watts

If everything puts exactly the same load on all hardware, then why do stress test programs exist?  Since, as you say, they can't possibly use any more power than a typical game.  Why have Intel and AMD put power-monitoring features into their hardware, to keep track of how much power programs are actually using and adjust clock speeds accordingly, if it never varies from one program to another?  And could you please explain the concept of a power virus?

Intel and AMD don't make GPU's for one...   For two, you obviously didn't read my original post about the many factors to a computer overheating.   The issue was overheating...

Yes a processor will throttle the amount of speed it uses based on the load it has, but it's voltage and the card's max wattage usage is quite static unless it has an architecture that enables voltage and wattage throttling to save power.  Ex. Sandy Bridge.

When you are running a video game, regardless of how intense the GPU itself will always be running at it's max clock speed which will pull the full amount of wattage from the PSU.  Now that's not saying that the processor itself will be running at 100% but it's clock speeds will be as a GPU will only clock down itself if it is not being used.  Remember a system will allocate as much resources as possible to any software that is running.   Now it's not uncommon for new games to cause overheating issues on a card, as wow had at one point been unplayable by people with a defective driver Nvidia released long ago.  Playing wow would almost fry your graphic card, because of that driver alone.

I really do not wish to constantly have a stupid debate, but what I do want is the OP to try finding the specific problem by running benchmarks and figuring out what is causing the issues or bring it into a certified professional to do it for them.

UM, BOTH Intel and AMD make video cards. Intel is mostly integrated but they do make video cards. AMD is the make of Radeon cards... the second most used card on the planet...

Correction.   Intel embeds it's graphics architecture within the processor itself and does not in fact make cards.  Secondly ATI makes Radeon graphics cards, AMD owns ATI but ATI is a completely seperate company.  Please go educate yourself, thanks.

Suggest you correct yourself on AMD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Micro_Devices

i know Intel made a card.. took me a minute to find it.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&cp=13&gs_id=1d&xhr=t&q=intel+video+card&tok=SObFgKZsci-fjrWej5zp7Q&safe=off&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=677&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=2894208323061772823&sa=X&ei=HG7zTrKvNYLf0QGD_sXRAg&sqi=2&ved=0CHwQ8wIwBQ

they were working with nvideo to make other video cards but that fell through some time ago.

This is what i was complaining about to my brother in law as he asked me to play WoW with him. Coming from healing and tanking in SWToR, i was bored hitting the same button over and over again. I was talking about having watched a video on youtube and seeing a mage do 23k dps. hitting 2 buttons. my 9 year old nephew has leveled his mage from 1 to 71 by himself,  mashing the same 2-3 buttons.

The best part, just before i clicked on this thread, there was another thread for SWToR asking if there were to many abilities. I had to laugh to myself. Apparently that person never once played any other MMO but WoW.

LOL @ someone who has no idea. Arcane mage does most damage with ONE spell but you have to understand and time CDs, understand mechanics and decide when to burn and when to converse mana.

Sure you can just smash buttons and put out some damage. To max dps, you have to know what you are doing. Read elitistjerks if you want to know how to do it properly.

Thank you for confirming my point that WoW is so simplified that ONE spell is all an arcane mage needs to dps in raids.

for those that dont have a beta invite, but want to see it.

Live stream with jesse cox.

http://www.twitch.tv/shaboozey

when i played my IA up to 14, the snipe kill was just a spell/skill. there wasnt anything special about it except the amount of dmg it did. ambush was an upgraded version of it, if i remember correctly. my assassin had an ambush as well. so i might be confused on the better sniper name.

Edit: oops forgot, no the range isnt all that far. 30 or 40 meters.

Trying to label people you disagree with as conspiricy theorist = pathetic.

Probably not a conspiracy theory, per se, but it is paranoid.  And the argumentum ad hominem of attacking the reviewer when you don't like the contents of review is fallacious by definition.

What's the motivation for taking an accusatory stace at the reviewer?  You can answer that for yourself, I imagine.  Which is more "pathetic"?

It is a pretty good red herring though.  How many pages of "review the reviewer" did we get from it?

The thread started with several reviews of the reviewer. At first, I thought that was the point of the thread.

** edit **

Then I realized that the thread was about whether or not you like SW:ToR (whether you played it or not) and then using that opinion to bash or praise the reviewer. Anything, up to and including paranoid conspiracy theories and dyed eyebrows is a legitimate justification for whatever opinion you've got. Just so long as you don't come out and say, "I like/don't like SW:ToR and I have/have not played it!"

I like SW:TOR and yes i have played it.

I didnt have to install or sign up in Origin at all to play this weekend.

I got mine for this weekend!! US version.

Trion is in fact the developer of Defiance. End of Nations is a second-party development project.

As Mike B said in another thread, EoN is a second party project but, it's also a FTP project. Defiance doesn't appear to be that way.

I'm not sure there is going to be enough revenue generated from a FTP game like EoN in the RTS sector to be significant.

So either way, Trion is still putting resources/cash towards the bill for at least two projects here, even if it is partial on one. Not that any of that really matters in the long run because as the analyst said, Trion has to have ALL of it's projects be hits, not just one (Rift) or two (Defiance) to be a successful IPO candidate.

That means it's Red Door publishing platform and EoN as well. ALL of it, not just some of it.

EoN will also have a subscription, it's in the FAQs. It doesnt offer more then the regular F2P model, just says they give you free convience items every month. It will be interesting to see if it's worth the script or easier to just buy the convience items alone.

Off topic: For one I hope there are different skins for the factions, a way to set ones self apart from the hordes of other players. 50 player armies on a map running the same colored vehicles and troops would make my eyes go buggy.

What's a "WoW Clone" exactly? everyone uses it like it actually means anything.

Simply put, a game that copies WOW's mechanic's and visuals in an attempt to repeat their commercal success.  That would be my definition anyway.

So you are saying that if a game uses a ui, quests, hotbar, pixels, its got to be a wow clone. sorry that doesnt make sense to me one bit. many many games had all that before wow ever did, and hopefully many games continue to have them.

No I did not say that.  You made something up tp make a point.

no, i read what you said and interpreted it. you said wow's mechanics and visuals... if my reply doesnt apply to your reply then your reply must be incomplete. I've seen 1 game that looked so close to wow that i could call it a wow clone. i believe it was some f2p game. it had the same basic characters that looked like wow, the same artwork, the exact same ui.

i have never seen any other game that would be considered a wow clone. that is the reason i asked a very simple question, what is a wow clone? if you cant answer that, then you are using made up words to describe an opinion.

This is not good. I was looking forward to EQ and Planetside Next, however if they are still having security issues like this, well i dunno if i can trust them.

If you are having issues with this, i'de suggest you disconnect your PC from the internet as fast as you can! Brute force password guessing is done on a daily basis for a lot of wannabe hackers. It one of the easier ways to get user name/passwords for games, emails, system accounts.

Easiest class?

I think playing the Rogue class with ranger and marksman souls would do you good, they have nice survivability. But then again any class with a tanking pet does well. mage class with necro or elemental pets that tank do well. But in my honest opinion ranger/marks does the best for me.

Heh, I find these posts humorous. I payed for my 6m script right at beta, just saw that i can get a year play time for 8.99 a month if i pay it in advance... my jaw dropped at that kind of savings. Hell if trion wants to give me perks on top of me saving that kind of money, i will gladly pay for a year script and take the rewards to boot.

You dont have to beat me over the head to see something so simple as saving money and getting free shit for it.

Anything else being put in this thread about greed is utter nonsense, well unless you're talking about my greed. :)
