I've seen the game being played. I got to go into the office and watched a team of developers play (so no NDA violation here).  They were very friendly and happy to show me the game.

I will tell you that the game plays great.  It's smooth, very detailed and yes, very tactical.  I was first impressed with the graphics, but the gameplay was fantastic.  They've definitely done a great job with creating something different and very entertaining.

I can't speak to the story or the min-games, because I only watched for about 10 minutes.  But, from what I saw, it was very impressive.

But, Bugzonlsd, when you say that the combat isn't tactical, you are completely wrong and have NO experience to say otherwise.  A player can't just stand there and blast away, they'll die quickly (saw it for myself).  You must find cover and think about how to go after your target.  Of course, if you still don't think the combat is tactical after you play, all the better for those of us who will play against you.

"Bugzonlsd" <----- not worried.  Long posts = wasted time. NDA? ....FTP! See you inside.

Theres nothing tactical about the combat in this game, dont fool yourself.

Cryptic owns the former assets of the game, those screenshots sir would or should be part of that, hence the question seeing as how they werent out before.

Oh ok.

They have been around for a while. If they were new to you, then that would make sense (but not your aggressive tone).

aggressive tone ?a little dull or blunt wording maybe yes but agressive no. Ive been following sto since the announcement of its dev. never saw those screenies, one or two yes the rest no.

Yea, yea bunch of useless skills or not, gotcha. Wont matter one way or the other, a month after release everyone will be crying about bugs and the fanbois will come to the rescue then begin the flame wars, cries of foul, polls and server population posts. Just play it if you like star trek and make it easy on yourself.

Eh?

Anyway, those pictures are far more appealing to me than Cryptics plasticine ones.

yea im not sure why anyone would keep jumpin into the superhero theme like that. i guess they feel its their claim to fame. I'll say this, they got it down on champions when it comes to character creation. The yshould specialize in selling customization tools cause some of these other dev companies aint got a clue one.

Welcome to S.T.O comic book space adventures!  Did you guys honestly expect anything less from the Cryptic engine?

rofl. I agree but im still gonna play. cant pass this up, its the first star trek mmo.

oh yea and warrior, er whatever the Phlox your name is, :) GRAPHICS ARENT A MAJOR ISSUE. You make it sound like the effin sky is fallin because it doesnt look like some sort of virtual reality sim or some sh**.

Teens don't give a flying crap about star trek.

30-50 yr olds do.

Teens want a fast paced star warsy or shall I say Star trekkie experience.  (until they get bored in a month)

30-50 yr olds want an immersive experience that lets them build their character with an investment of time and LIVE the star trek world that Gene gave us the vision of.

Teens will drop you when the next game comes out.

30-50 yr olds are looking for agame to spend YEARS In. We like complex puzzles, not games that actually have an age listed on the side.

Teens....  are not consistent income.

30-50 yr olds have jobs and credit cards a plenty.

This 35 yr old wants a game worth playing.  A game that has the OPTION to have a crew of real ppl and when my engineer logs off then an NPC can take over his station.  When my ship is blown up because I went around starting a fight it had better cost me something so I will think twice about being an A$$ and have no consequences for my actions.

I would have been STo's best fanboi ever.....but now i'm very skeptical and will not blindly hand over my CC number.

Who's your target Cryptic?   A coh/cov kid?   or a fan of trek?  Cause we're not kids anymore.

I'm calling you out!  Other game companies have burned me and you aren't getting the same blind trust that I gave SOE.  Time to put up or shut up.  Poop or get off the pot! :P

ya, i'm in a mood today. :P

faxx

heh you tellem man.

Oh yea, hate to say this but. this game will probably be played via legacy view. Third person 2-3 inch ship with limited zoom and then third person view for ground play. Cryptics gonna be in deep sh** on release.

This "Issue" isnt a problem, its like writing a book no? You use and do not deviate from the model you originally develope. Much like a book, you go page by page till you get to the end, thus if your model, originally has ground content and space combat content within. you use this same model for your expansion, so if you have ten space missions with 20 ground encounters the way you put those together originally stays the same, the story and content (ships, characters gameplay may change some but not much, but this is an excellent way to make sure your not cheating one side of gameplay or the other.

This is just me as a gamer saying this, but if anyone concentrated on making an mmo what it is for itself and didnt concentrate on beating wow so much we might actually get a decent mmo. Ip or no, dont cheat an mmo for what it could be by trying to live up to groundless standards.

I watched the Stargate Combat video, and I like the progress with the A.I.

I don't want a MMOFPS, that is more first person shooter like MMO's. If I want to play a First Person Shooter, there are plenty of good ones that exist already, and lots more in development.

AoC sort of went for that feel with the push up down left to attack / block combat. I wasn't interested in that, because it just seems like console button mashing to me.

I like the direction the Stargate combat is taking, with more reaction from MObs. They don't just stand there, they try to flank you, take over your cover, rush you, etc. It's an improvement.

I'm not sure about the "cover" thing, and I don't know how you could translate this to melee combat, but at least the Mobs don't stand there like moles waiting to be whacked.

Id go so far as to say if you enjoy your mobs trying to hunt you down like a player would, why not just play ffa pvp on any game server? /shrug thats exactly what it looked like to me just not as well but hey its only ai.

I see your point about your concern for a mature community.  Seeing that little girl stand up and ask what ages could play sto on the webcast was kind of ya know, disturbing but not because a "youngin" wants to play the same mmo as us, but because someone that young is subjected to impatience, rudeness and the vulgarity that comes with our online communities. As parents you know children have spongelike minds(boy do they!) and they soak it up and reciprocate, they learn from what others do and give this right back. (Dont ever mumble the F word) lol "evAr!!z

Your speaking about a community problem, not a youth problem, while I do agree that we all strive for a better maturity lvl in our mmos, I'd say it starts within ourselves as elders both in our games and in life before we look at any age group because all age groups can act equally "shitty" and be "complete arses" coming from the first years of Ultima Online, You get to see it all. Guess what? Alot of it stemmed from that game and has grown to 9 sumodd million wow players. Its in every community, eve online, coh/cov, dare i even mention any korean mmo? ;)

Im 31 years old, and grew up watching star trek with dad, some of my earliest memories were of that old enterprise, and while im not the "trekkie" some of you guys may be, I do enjoy even now watching any episode I can catch from the old days till today and seeing the kid ask kinda lit me up honestly, the guy who said its kind of a dead ip is correct, it kinda is. Let the kids play man, if you can put up with them at home a couple little goofy kids havin fun isnt gonna kill us,(hell ive come to the point where its just comedy) we were there once and they'll grow out of it with a little help. Hell I was surprised someone or ANYONE that age would even care to be curious about Star Trek, I was happy to see it.

Now if we could just convince a dev company to give us a Dune Mmo we would be in damn good shape :)

We still want Star Ship INTERIORS and Player / Guild Owned Ships!!!

1) REAL Player owned / Guild owned Ships.

I think i saw this in the video podcast :)

2) Ships we can walk around and interact from within.

Yea well, he DID say your ship would be customizeable and that it would have all these different things in it like medbays and all that, som Im guessing yea you can walk around in your ship, not to mention the podcast showed combat on the deck.

3) Ships with a BRIDGE, SICKBAY, CREW QUATERS, MAIN ENGINEERING, MESS HALL / SOCIAL AREA.

Again he said all this is there and showed it :)

4) We should be able to walk around and go from one area to the next almost seemlessly.

yea we would

5) These Ships should have both a PC crew aswell as a NPC crew.

Dunno about that, I rather liked the idea of running my own ship. A huge guildship with one idiot at the helm and ten other idiots spamming OmGiRoXXorz while Im trying to give orders isnt my idea of fun? I dunno thats up to you. ;)

6) Crew  should have a profession: SCIENCE, DOCTOR, HELM, TACTICAL, ENGINEERING, COMMAND.

Thats just common sense and its in there.

7) AWAY TEAM professions: SCI-EXPLORATION, SECURITY, MEDIC, CONSTRUCTION

Bleh there will be away teams and youll be able to beam down even with other captains, No big loss here nor need for specifics

8) Full on GALAXIES to Explore. With both WARP and REALTIME travel.

Yea thats definetly there from what I heard and saw.

9) Full Planets to Explore and Fight over

I dunno about full? But I dont see ANY reason to make a 50 gigabite game just so you can explore full planets, Id settle for colonies seeing as how thats how it is in the first place following cannon.

10) Guild run Space Stations with commerce, defense, and social content

Thats there. :) so your not far off with anything your after here. But time will tell.

Not many MMORPGs get the 2nd chance this game is getting. The bottom line is many of the above items were the cause of much bad blood with PE. DO NOT try to be like WOW! Do the right thing and listen to the People. We only want to see STO be the best game on the market!

yea I think they heard you all the first 8 months of bitching. :0 its star trek not life, relax

It seems to me Star Trek did fine for 40 yrs why put too much care into what NON star trek fans want? Its not like a whole lotta them are gonna be playing it. And if it turns out to be a good game, those who do will enjoy and might even give ST a chance. I really hate that (Last I heard) it was suppose to be released to coincide with the new movie in 2008. I cringe at the thought of that TERRIBLE idea for a movie (This is not Star Wars, I dont wanna find out Kirk was a whiny little bitch like Vader apparently was) Also didnt they say the holodecks would be the place for PVP? And if they are gonna get rid of the guild run starships idea, its gonna be really sad.

Without getting too deep into it - this is a contentious topic on its own, no doubt - the Star Trek audience is a lot smaller then it was even when Star Trek Enterprise aired its first episode (over 9 million people stopped watching Enterprise between "Broken Bow" and "These Are The Voyages"; its Nielsen share went from a 7.0 to a 2.2). That's not to say that STO shouldn't incorporate the things that make Trek unique, or that it should be unrecognizable to Trek fans, but I think any successful MMO under the IP has to be able to draw in support beyond just those people who still actively and passionately care about Trek.

On the subject of Holodecks and PvP, you may be able to PvP in the holodecks as well; the system that Daron described, though, was described as "war games" - combat between Federation starships in designated areas or under designated conditions that's not actual combat in the sense of going out and destroying an invading Borg cube, but is done for...well, for all the reasons that one PvPs. PvP will obviously expand once Perpetual introduces a second playable faction.

On the subject of guild-run starships, I'm not quite sure what you mean - guilds will be able to crew ships (and multiple ships) together, that's an absolutely certainty. If you're talking about guild-ownable hubs, it's a possibility, but we haven't heard anything on that. I'd expect guilds to be a strong influence in the game, personally.

Wow to hear you talk, one would think PE was the best thing since the invention of fire!

The thing of it is Bud, this thread would not even be here if PE had any chance at all on delivering a decent Star Trek game.  So far, all I have seen is a bunch of talk (lies) from a company who has never even completed a single MMORPG game.  Some may say GODs and HEROs...but think!...where the hell is this game that was supposed to be released over 2 months ago? We have watched in horror as this company has missed deadline after deadline. We have watched  GODs and HEROs go from one of the most anticipated MMORPGs to one of the most dreaded, almost overnight.  NO MORE!...No more lies. Take a look at the "Hype Meter". One only need look there to see where PE projects rate with the gaming community.  No one trusts PE anymore. No one believes anything they say.  To me they are no better than SOE when it comes to doing what they say they will.

Where are the videos?....What about a functioning combat system? it's been years and they don't even have a working game yet. Care to explain why that is? I ask because you seem to have an explanation for everything. So, other than concept art and a VERY FEW screen shots...Does PE even have a working model for STO? You have little credibility here my STO-UBER-MOD. You see, because of the fact you work as a moderator on STO.NET, It's hard to trust anything you say. We all know you will defend STO and PE because you want to keep your job as a mod.  I will never trust anything you say based on that fact alone...I mean really, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO SAY? The truth is, you will never call PE out on the carpet, because you want to keep your job as MOD....they don't put critics in that position...only fanboys.

Please return to beating down noobs on the STO.NET FORUMS...K THANKS!

I think people want a star trek game and P.E is going to give them one and you sir will be a subscriber.

lol you have issues, thats Im going to say.

An dune mmo? wtf are you kidding? I'd sub to that in a hearbeat bro. talk about killer sci fi.

Easy there freako, dont make assumptions Im just wondering what the deal is.

Well that seals it. I am not gonna even try this game now.

lol - SOE recently list a game it is going to co-publish - as a game that it is going to co-publish

Samuraisword now announces he will not play it, even though it has been known for well over a year that SOE is a co-publisher

well, for me it doesn't matter, IF it's involved with SOE in any way, I won't buy it,   There are too many mmos coming anyways.
Good luck.

I think the name of this thread is whats throwing people off,

This game has never been announced to be on the station access pass, the station access pass is  a collective list of games you pay x amount of money for to play x amount of games. G&H is only listed on the station website, G&H subs will be done through P.E.,  because they will be hosting thier own servers for thier own games, Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising and Star Trek Online.

Thanks for the confusion Op, but it's easily cleared up by anyone who will simply look it up or ask about it on the G&H site.
