It really does depend on how you define what an MMORPG is... If your list of stipulations includes things like a massive persistent world, NPCs to interact with for questing and content, and the ability to form groups with other players to experience that content with... then no, this might not qualify as an MMO. But then again, if things like Guild Wars and Global Agenda and some of the MMORTS games out there qualify as MMOs, and as one poster mentioned, there IS some persistent progression in LoL through summoner masteries and runes... whos to say it cant fit somewhere in the genre's fringes. I dunno... I suppose the bigger question is "Who cares?" If the game is fun (which I personally find it to be), why does it matter if its a true MMO or not? |

Originally posted by Adun I find it ironic that you keep goin on about how vague I am... but do not define what about my post was vague. Hello pot? Meet kettle. I hear you have something in common about your coloring... I even thought I was fairly clear on the different points I covered, though perhaps I could have gone a bit deeper so as to tell you more about Earthrise... But honestly, my review was cut a bit short because really the only thing I should have posted was a big "KEEP AWAY ALL YE NEW PLAYERS, THIS GAME IS NO GOOD" sign. I didnt see the point in continuing, which is why I summed it up nicely at the end. |

Right... So I decided to give this game a try seeing as it had been on my radar for awhile, and today was the day of the patch which supposedly turned it around and made it playable (also it was only 12$ on D2D). Unfortunately, the nicest thing about trying out Earthrise for the first time was that the price wasnt high enough to make me really regret buying it (though I could have bought a 6pack with that 12$ and would have enjoyed myself far more I think).
1) Graphics (7/10) The graphics in Earthrise arent horrible, but they arent great either. I would say that they sit somewhere in the middle of the MMORPG road, caught between the nicer looking games (AoC/Aion/Rift/Global Agenda) and the rest. I thought the armor and weapons were pretty neat-looking for what I saw of them (some higher level players ran me around to introduce me to the game and showed me their gear), but it wasnt anything mindblowing that I hadnt either seen before, or seen done better...
2) Playability / Lag / Latency (7/10) Ultimately, this game ran alright, though I just recently upgraded my PC (currently running an AMD Phenom Quadcore with 6 gigs of RAM and a brand new Nvidia 450GTS card), so it damned well better... I had a little bit of stuttering and the loadtimes were pretty bad though, so while it was definitely playable latency-wise, it wasnt smooth (which speaks to the coding/design of the game, because ive run a couple games that were more intensive on this rig already and they ran better).
3) Originality / Fun (3/10) This game looks neat, and the concept behind the ranged combat is kinda cool, but it is at the bottom of the pack where fun is concerned. Ive played alot of MMOs in my time (seeing as its been my hobby for over 10 years now) and right off the bat I recognized this one for one that is very sparse on actual content (perhaps to be expected to some degree because it is described as a sandbox, though I saw very few sandboxy elements in the few hours I played... maybe they are more prevalent in the endgame, I dunno).
4) UI Friendliness / Overall Design / Controls (3/10) This dosent get a zero, because sad to say, ive seen worse... but the UI and controls for this game are among some of the least-clean that ive ever experienced. Movement feels stilted and slow, and when you jump, you barely clear the ground. The animations are also very poorly concieved, and the targetting system is not very intuitive.
I dunno, I feel like I can stop here with this review and just give you guys a summary... Going any further seems like an exercise in futility. All I really have to say about Earthrise is that, if this miracle patch that went through today apparently saved the game from its previous state and made it awesome compared to what it was, I would have never in a million years wanted to play the pre-patch version. This game is uninspired and poorly executed, and while the actual concept behind it (post apocalyptic sci fi is always cool as a concept) and some of the art in the game (cant help but say that the modeling wasnt total crap, and the guns looked cool, as did the armor) has some merit, everything else in the few hours I played left a horrible taste in my mouth that pretty much cancelled out any positives there were. Now im sure a few people will say "But Jonsus, you didnt even give it a chance! A few hours is nowhere near enough to really understand a game!" To those people I nod politely and say that yes, in many cases one should play a bit longer to see if things work out and the game grows on you, but Earthrise felt awkward and horrible from the getgo, and 90% of why is the clunky interfacing and movement. You literally feel like youre swimming through molasses when you try to move around the gameworld, and targetting is a major pain. To put it bluntly, I saw all I needed to see, and I dont think the game had a ton to offer beyond it. TLDR: Game is not good. Save your money for beer. There is far better out there. |

I had been mildly interested in this game when I read about it being developped, but was put off by some bad reviews at launch. Apparently the buzz on the game forums and here tells me this "miracle patch" has brought it up to being playable, so I picked it up for 12$ from Direct 2 Drive, which isnt much, so whatever. Gonna give it a try. Will likely post a review in a few days. |

But yes, I agree, Planetside 2 is looking pretty goddamned awesome. |

Thoughts on whether or not GoD will bring people back...
Giran (General) « Lineage II 7/13/11 8:55:38 AM
Originally posted by Mannish Yea, I feel like the loyal few have kept this game running (also, NCsoft made millions in Korea with it and Aion, so its not like theyre hurting for cash and facing insolvancy if the game dosent turn record numbers here in the west...) Insofar as ive read/heard, GoD was initially slated to be Lineage 3, but instead just got pushed together as part of Lineage 2 (L2.5 is a fairly accurate description I think). I dunno. Like I said, this is a great game, and I will likely play again when GoD releases :). Im just hoping that others will as well. |

Any class from any game? A few interesting choices might be: WoW Paladin -> Bubblehearth = Crazy OP escape mechanic. Rob banks, get away scott free laughing at cops as they fire helplessly into your bubble. EQ1 Enchanter -> Charm is silly and could be very fun, not to mention invisibility, conjuring animated weapons to fight for you, being able to make people sleep/fight each other/etc. Cleric/Priest/Healer (any MMO) -> You're essentially Jesus. Become famous by rezzing people and healing the sick until the army captures you to experiment on your brain. EQ1/EQ2 Monk -> Become Jet Li. You are The One! EQ2 Bruiser -> Become UFC Champ, win millions by pummeling n00bz, sleep with hot chicks. (slight downside: you become a huge douche) EQ1/EQ2 Necro/Shadowknight -> Feign death could be good for a few chuckles, and for throwing crazy ex girlfriends and debt collectors off your trail. Also, skeletal servants that cackle and attack whatever you command them to. EQ2 Druid (fury/warden) -> Shapeshifting awesomeness. Amaze your friends, confound and probably devour your enemies. SWG/SW:ToR Jedi -> Because youd be a goddamn Jedi. Also, lightsabers. EQ1 Mage -> Manaburn ability = Equivalent of a tactical nuke. You instantly become the most dangerous Mofo on the planet. (slight downside: you have to rest for a minute or two after exploding a city) |

Right at the end of the interview before the dragon scene he is talking about how they want the game to come out when its done, and not be rushed... that its important for them to produce something of AAA quality thats super polished. God I love Arenanet. They have my support and my hard earned $. |

Today Show Thinks Adult Gamers Are Weird
General Gaming « General Discussion 7/12/11 12:52:02 PM
This kind of thing shows how out of touch some people are from reality. I wish society and the media in general would just adopt a more "Live and let live" attitude with regards to what people do on their own time in the privacy of their own homes. Also, the level of condescension coming from these talking heads is absolutely unreal. Pretty disgusting all in all. |

When and what will be te next in-depth fully geared game?
General Gaming « General Discussion 7/12/11 12:43:15 PM
Unfortunately (as I have already outlined in a few of my older rant-posts) the genre has changed to reflect the shifting demands and wants of its customerbase. "Old-school" MMOs, sandboxes, and uniquely developed conceptual games have been falling by the wayside due to the vastly increased popularity of WoW and its immediate-gratification themepark style. It is still the elephant in the room. It has changed the MMO landscape. It is why everything is different. I, personally, retain hope for Guild Wars 2, as I feel Arenanet is trying to do some new and innovative things that will revitalize the genre as a whole and change the way investors and developers see MMOs... but it wont release until next year. If youre looking for something to do to pass the time, I would very strongly recommend picking up Guild Wars 1 (all expansions and eye of the north can bought very cheaply these days) and unlocking stuff in prep for GW2, which is what ive been occupying myself with. You could also revisit some of the MMOs that have gone FTP recently, AoC being the most recent (yes, I know, it had alot of problems at launch, I was there... but ive been giving its free incarnation a spin and its not a bad thing to mess around in for the price). Also, if youre a big fan of older games, Lineage 2's big gamechanging expansion, Goddess Of Destruction, is slated to come out sometime in the next few months I believe. I will be checking it out when it releases, as I have a soft spot for that game. Always liked it. Dungeons and Dragons Online, Global Agenda, League of Legends, and Lord of the Rings Online are all free now and well worth checking out as well. You might find one of them suits you best. Good luck out there. The genre as it currently stands is a bit of a wasteland. |

General: Torchlight 2: Building on the Original
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/12/11 10:24:02 AM
Very interested to see what this turns into. I played the first Torchlight a bit, and found it neat. If the second one has more customization and complexity, it might very well hold my interest. |

Thoughts on whether or not GoD will bring people back...
Giran (General) « Lineage II 7/12/11 10:15:14 AM
I played in the Lineage 2 beta, and just as I did back then, I still consider it to be a deep and interesting game. Yes, it gets a little grindy (though let me tell you, after having toyed around with it for a bit in the recent past when I got ahold of a trial key, it is far less grindy now than it was) but ultimately, its incredibly well made, has a nearly seamless world, graphics that are still better than Id say 75% of the other MMOs currently running (stuff like AoC and Aion put it to shame, but what do you expect, it was released almost a decade ago!)... All in all, I think its a fair assessment to say that I like this game, and think it to be quite cool. However, as it is with many MMOs, L2 needs a solid community base to keep it going, and with all the new MMOs that released over the past two years and are slated for release this year and next, the question in my mind is whether or not (despite GoD) L2 will be able to sustain itself by keeping a loyal chunk of the genre's customer base. I am a tad worried that this gem of a game may fall by the wayside (though I will admit that I am one of the many who are salivating at the chance to play GW2). I, personally, will likely resub to L2 when GoD releases to see the changes and dive back into what I consider to be one of the best made MMOs to date, but I fear it may be doomed, even though it had a great run. Anyhow, im curious to see what others think. Will GoD attract and hold customers (most notably, enough to sustain the game for awhile longer) to L2? Maybe bring back some veterans while simultaneously attracting new interest? What do you guys think? |

Are these two games going to be competing for the same niche market? Will they be in competition with each other? I never really got the chance to check out the first Planetside, but ive heard very good things here and there... That being said, I loved the original Tribes games back in the day and cannot wait to see how the MMO turns out. Thoughts on this from people with more experience in the Planetside universe? |
