As for normal content my playtime has taken a hit, I mean I do have 3 level 60's already with 1 in T2 gear and the other 2 in T1.  Currently my passion is running Foundry Missions, mainly for the new stuff but secondly because its a good source of Runes & Enchants, ID Scrolls and Gold.

Anything Korean automatically raises a red flag.  Their entire culture is so different then those of us in the west that games from Korea and other parts of Asia usually consist of over sexualized avatars, unrealistic kee-yaw style combat, and happy rainbw unicorn art styles.

Maybe you should at least watch one of their videos first and then, if still unimpressed, make a post detailing what this particular game could do better. As it is, unrealistic combat and over sexualized avatars aren't solely within the domain of eastern games. That being said, the character models for this game aren't designed by prudes but retain a more refined aesthetic. I didn't see any happy unicorns with rainbows when I watched either. Those got left in Diablo III as a "joke".

Watched the video and I saw Asian Influences through and through.  From Frilly cottoney short dresses to over stylized flashy colorful combat animations.

Calleme a cynic but I love boring not flash.

I've only played 2ed and 2.5ed but to be honest trying to compare editions to a computer game is pointless.  Play the game based on its own merits I say.  From what little bit of knowledge I do have I understand that I would frickken hate playing 4ed Pen and Paper but in a PC game I could care less as long as the game is fun and engaging.

To me the definition of "Pay-to-Win" has always been something in an MMO that let you gain an in-game advantage.  In almost all F2P/B2P MMOs you can get some of the best gear in the game with real life money, usually by converting real life money to game currency and buying epics.  For example, I can gear my character in GW2 or Neverwinter in full "epics" with real life money.

I keep hearing players and developers now say that if you can get this gear in game with game currency, it isn't "Pay-to-Win".  When did this become the definition become the norm?

If I can get the best gear in the game with real life money, and I can get it with in-game currency.  It is still "Pay-to-Win".  Because usually you can buy in-game currency with real life money.

Star Citizen and Chris Roberts recently took this approach.  In Star Citizen you can buy all the ships with real life money.  When people said it was "Pay-to-Win", RSI said it isn't "Pay-to-Win" because you can buy the ships in game.

So am I wrong?  What is the definition of "Pay-to-Win"?

[mod edit]

In other words:

If you can buy something that gives power greater then something that can only be acquired in game.  I.e. Buy a Sword that does 1000 damage when the best sword found in gameplay only does 900 damage.

That is the truest and ONLY definition of P2W.

Trust me this game is going to be the greatest MMORPG ever created.

People will be playing this for at least a decade. This is WOWs first major threat

Ever concieved. The graphics shown look better in reality but your PC cant

display the greatness. The combat will be 1000x times better by release.

when you see trash mobs you won't want to skip it will be like bees to honey.

simply put this game will blow you away.

Keep it in your pants big boy.  Overhyped has led to the death of many a MMO and until you play it and until the game has had a year or more to mature know amount of wishful thinking will make something so that isnt.

All four paths won't appeal to everybody. You clearly aren't interested in the Explorer path. This is on purpose, so by not choosing Explorer you won't have to do as much of that kind of content. Pick one that has the stuff you like to do then.

Actually early testing (years ago even) is that the paths tend to be polarizing - i.e. almost everyone has a natural affinity for one and one that they're like "you'd have to be crazy to choose that".  And we've tested the concepts on tons of people and keep getting that reaction.  Statistically it's a fairly even split about who chooses what in game; there are some deltas about which is most popular or not in a given patch.

We don't mind that at all :)

Pretty much this.

I suggest someone take the Bartle test to determine where they might fit in.

As someone who consistently scores 97%+ on Explorer I would heavily favor that path for Wildstar (if I choose to play that is).

Someone who favors Combat might look and say "hey Soldier looks like it is OP" when that person is planning on going another path will take the Bartle test and find out they are really are a Killer on the Bartle test.

I highly suggest if you've never taken it to do so, you never know you may come to find out that you have always thought you were one type of gamer and testing shows otherwise.  I know, I was that way 6 or 7 years ago when I found out I was an Explorer and the whole time I thought I was an Achiever.  Turns out Achiever was my lowest quotient LOL.

The cartoon world turns me off and will probably keep me away.

Yup same here.  I think there are a potential few million gamers who feel the same way we both do.  Wildstar will be a joke to anyone wanting to come into the MMO market and will most likely only gather current MMO players as potential followers.

Who cares actually, AoC looked great how did that turn out for the masses that could not run it.

Now imagine how awesome Wildstar would be with AoC's graphic art style.

I want to play this game, I really do but I am about 90% positive I will not because of the cartooney graphics.  They say they are going for stylized but they could of gone something different then cartooney.  Hell at this point i would of taken cell-shadded or Painterly (gw2).

I think Teras combat would have been perfect for SW:TOR. Too bad they didn't want to be innovative in terms of combat gameplay. I'd really loved to kill imps with my flying lightsaber by aiming or doding an attack actively. The politics system would fit to a game like this, too, of course adapted to Star Wars,

Very well said.  Also the endgame of SWTOR could of been innovative but nope they followed the tried and true WoW method but were worse at it.

Tera on the other hand pretty much took WoW's boring, linear, quest hub design to a whole new level mediocrity.  Truly sad IMO.

Dear game devs:

If you want to innovate, you do so on the core MMO principles i.e. progression, combat and endgame.  To copy WoW on any of these is a failure because you're not gonna outdo WoW at WoW.

Mordred as the worst thing Mythic ever did... many tried it but only a very few stayed, the majorrity of people concluded that RvR PvP was far supperior to FFA.

Not only this but we need to remember that Mythic put out 2 FFA PvP servers.  Mordred and Andred, Andred was shuttered within the year and Mordred was a relative ghost town.

But again one can look at WoW and see this as well, most of the PvP servers are lower population then the PvE servers.

Facts are a stubborn thing!

Just because a game features RvR (or in TESO's vernacular AvA) doesn't make it any less an open world PvP game.

There are several defintions.

Open World (features anywhere and zoned) either all the time or flagging

Instanced (relegated to queuing for closed battlegrounds)

TESO's PvP occurs in the world, just not in the whole world therefor it still remains World PvP, but because PvP is consentual without flagging it limits the activity to certain zones.

What is a console?

Seriously, I have thought of consoles as the realm of pretend gamers since about 7 or 8 years ago.  True gamers understand the limitations of consoles and play PC exclusively.  In fact I wouldnt even consider someone who plays nothing but consoles a gamer but a mere player.

In other words I could care less what Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony do nor do I care.  I own a PS3 and about 12 games for it but never play it because controllers are stupid and do not offer near the response as a Mouse and Keyboard.

Luckily I won't have to wait long for mine.

What do I mean specifically by fluid? The sum of: the games response to your input, the successive execution of skills and skill macro responsiveness.

No, I won't go back to WoW. I'm finished with that game and practically this entire genre. WoW has a lot of problems.. and frankly, even without them I couldn't bring myself to play it, because my marginal utility from doing anything for a ridiculous amount of time is negative to 0.

Some games have tried making babysteps, like Tera, Raiderz, AoC etc., but nothing so far has been executed at the same caliber.

It has been over a decade now for MMORPGers and we're still stuck with tab targeting for the most part; you'll have some games like GW2 boasting a pseudo targeting, i.e. aoe system with a dodge in place mimicking a cooldown in WoW, but it's really just the same beast with a different flavor (and still, not quite as fluid in my worthless opinion).

Has anybody found anything with combat comparably "fluid" to WoWs? I am really hankering for something new and nothing recently has really captured my fancy in the combat department.

I feel GW2 (casting and 2H use, DW looks akward to me since they both don't swing together) and Neverwinter are on par with WoW's combat animations.  But your right WoW's is certqainly the benchmark for good combat animations.  Bad animations are my worst pet peeve in an MMO and has caused me to quit Rift, TSW and LotRO.

I would reply, but, frankly its just easier to read my thoughts here.

Read that and immediately stopped when I discovered it was glorfying a game that by all intents and purposes is reaching out to one of the smallest subset of players this side of MMO'dom.

So you see quite a few threads talking about the gameplay of ESO, but how do people feel about the art style of the game?

From the screens and videos I've seen, the environments look nice enough but the player models seem kind of meh.

And I don't mean the engine they're using, just the art style, the way the modeled everything.  Also, some of the animations seemed a bit... over the top for an Elder Scrolls game maybe?

No offense but it's a thousand times better then something like Wildstar.  Also the art direction is fine, esoecially considering they are shooting for 200 people being rendered on screen at one time.  Personal opinion but I like how it looks, feels very elder scrolls'y.  My only complaint is they are not including a Dye system for armor.

You have to be blind if you think the animation are good in this game or some of the character models. Let's hope you don't get into beta "everything's fine" is not the type of beta tester this game needs.

You see everything is fine because I have been playing MMO's long enough to understand there is certain give and takes involved when you're talking about translating something from a single player experience to a multi-player experience.

Of course it doesnt look EXACTLY like Skyrim, it can't.  But of course your prolly one of those guys who bitches because "OMFG I can't place buckets over Vendors and rob them blind".  Narrow mindedness is 1 of the greatest complaints I have with gamers, especially considering MMO players.  And you sir are high on that list!

Don't look to TESO to give you a pvp experience as good as daoc.

1 this megaserver thing means no server communities
2 yeah you have campaigns within the mega server, but did you know you can both guest in a "friends" campaign (e.g. join one where you are winning) and can also transfer to another campaign for a loss of alliance ranks (which isn't the same thing as being forced to reroll)
3 with pve you go in any shard on the mega server you like, pve isn't tied to a campaign at all, there's no link between pve and pvp, no need for pveers to thank pvpers for securing relics.
4 there's no alternative ruleset ffa and coop servers, because there's no servers.
5 its entering open beta, every mmo I've beta'd in the last 5 years has had epic whine from the pve crowd, specifically the "used to like wow, but it gives away welfare epics" now crowd. They've already given in to this lot, expect them to give in even more on stuff like raiding giving the best gear, wooly super light faction locks etc.. latter happened with tsw about 2 months before release completely breaking pvp for instance.

Disagree with pretty much everything you posted Shaky and agreed with the OP on most points.  Call me super apprehensive about the mega server but something tells me all the negatives it entails will be sorted out, an RvR (AvA) team as prodigious as ZOS's can't be that short sighted to its shortcomings.

As for the OP, the biggest detractor for me from GW2's WvW was the 4 map setup and the short destinations between POI's.  This allowed the Zerg to rule.  TESO should in theory limit zerging as much as DAoC did.  You'll never get rid of it completely but having large stretches of trave time between POI's gives greater appeal to small scale matchups.

And yet leveling is the only thing I truly enjoy!

I want to see another game that takes years to reach level cap but with player progression at timed intervals.  My ddream is to play an Asheron's Call type of MMO that takes a minimum of 2-3 years to reach the level cap on a 3-4 hour, 5 day play cycle (this would be gated too, anything more is not carried over to Eff with powerlevelers and non-conformists)  The thing with this system is that vertical progression is easily measured.  Don't get me wrong I love lengthy leveling times but hate not getting spells, abilities and stat upgrades in a timely fashion.  SO my game would have about on average every 2 hours an upgrade to either Stats, Abilities, or passive effects (like a talent tree).  This is ontop of gear acquisition, which would further help break up the length in between character progression.
