will darkfall fill the gap left by uo?
Britannia Tavern (General) « Ultima Online 2/04/07 8:20:29 PM
I intend to begin my journies in Darkfall as a crafter.. Though I really love the pvp system that is in place! Maybe I'll be the first Murderer/Crafter? Hehe, could be fun! |

Of course Darkfall is real! The only reason why it hasn't released is because everytime they consider it, a new MMO hits the market in which darkfall chooses to go through a major overhaul in order to top it. Darkfall will be the best MMO out there, not the 2nd best. Patience is a Virtue. And The Dev team behind Darkfall has plenty of Patience. |

The only really good one that I've played yet would be UO and that was easy to cancel once it chose to follow the same path that Diablo/EQ/Etc.. took. I will never play an Item Based game again. I want a game where getting the most "UBER" gear means nothing in comparison to how you play your character. Another reason why I am for Full Looting and Stealing. Nothing pleases me more than some carebear with unstoppable gear crying when he loses it, lol. I can't wait for Darkfall! The best game of the Genre imo! Even better than UO used to be. |

This game has never been vaporware... Everytime it gets close to a release date another game just releases that Darkfall would rather learn from than compete with. The Darkfall team simply does not want to release a #2 game, they want to be the best! And with their patience and understanding of what players really want in an MMORPG they'll have that. Even if they have to ignore the bickering of forum children crying about it. Darkfall could of released 2 years ago.. But why release a game when other games have you beat in certain areas when instead you can just learn from that and make your game the best? The video was incredible. Of course Darkfall isn't completely playable yet, but it seems the combat system at least is working great at the moment. What they are doing with ship to ship combat looks rather interesting as well. Boarding other vessels and commadeering ships will be fun as hell! Of course I'm gonna be the one crafting them instead of the one sinking within them. |

I do have to compliment the OP for his use of grammar and punctuation though! Most of the people in the "I want to play for free" category tend to be between the ages of 10-16... I agree with the replies however... And on top of that, each account should be placed under a different name, and no two accounts should be under the same billing information in my opinion. This will stop those who wish to get multiple accounts in order to circumvent the SCS system. |

I've played a few MMO's and my favorite will always be old school UO...
Everquest = Lack of Freedom to play the way that I wanted to. World of Warcraft = Haven't technically quit yet(still paying for it just not playing), but a combination of both too much travel time, lack of freedom, and the feeling of an endless grind or job. After seeing that The Burning Crusade didn't change anything, I haven't logged in in about 2 weeks. The instances got better, but you still have to do them :/ Ultima Online = Played UO since release and loved it. Nothing will ever compare.. Over the years UO just started changing for the worse. I only truely quit UO because it tried to hard to turn itself into EQ/Diablo or what WoW is now just with shittier graphics, and the only reason I played UO was because it wasn't like them. I don't like item based games. Early UO was heaven, you could have every best item in the game and die to anything. Nowadays you can have above avg items and be immortal. Changing the way items worked in UO was the biggest mistake they ever made. I quit shortly after Age of Shadows Expansion. I am really looking forward to Darkfall. I'm praying to God that it isn't vaporware because I've never seen a better game go into development. It's the only game that I'm looking forward to and if it or another game similar to it doesn't release then I'll probably be done with MMORPGs forever. |

Well, I really do love the idea of Darkfall.. But honestly I'm just waiting for any company to release a MMORPG with the same ideals as Darkfall.. I'm hoping that Darkfall will be the first, but if not, well.. I'll jump on the other bandwagon instead, lol.. What I'm try'n to say is.. I'm remaining a loyal Darfall fan for now.. But if another game beats them to the punch, that's not my problem :/ |

I have the curse... But I pretty much gave up on any new info.. I just check the forums once every 6 months or so, lol... |

Oh, I get it now.. His words were so cluttered together that I couldn't figure that out before, heh. Yeah, any year now pretty much sums it up.. If only we could get a Dev member to say it we could go back to filling our time with other shit again, lol. I only check in on Darkfall maybe one week out of every 6 months... |

I have no idea what you are even talking about, lol.. Are you trying to state that you think Darkfall will be a Text based game such as something similar to KnightFight.co.uk or Kingdom Wars? Cause I'd have to ask you to do a little more research, heh.. DF is going to be a MMORPG such as Ultima Online, or DAOC, or Shadowbane, or World of Warcraft. Of course the approach that DF is taking is one that none of the others above have tried before (Aside from UO), which is why it's gathered so much interest. |

Yes, Melee combat puts you in a very zoomed in 3rd person view.. Well, just having a melee weapon equipped will do this really.. Don't have to be in combat or even be using the weapon I don't believe. |

Haha, well, you got me there... But honestly, Darkfall will place it's mark on all future development within the MMORPG genre. Issues that other games have all been avoiding until now, will be all of a sudden given a second look. What Darkfall Realizes that other MMO's to date haven't is that people will always complain.. There is no end to it. And what it all comes down to is when someone asks for something to be easier, they don't want it to be easier on everyone.. They just want it easier for themselves.. And once they are heard and things are made easier for everyone.. that same player then quits because things are too easy for everyone! So moral of the story is: People do not know what they want! Let the professionals do the real work, and sit back and enjoy it... Ever since the Felucia vs Trammel debate came about no other game wanted to go anywhere near the felucia path. A huge mistake in my opinion. Let players lead their own lives! Let the world weld itself around the players! Let your own choices lead you to your success/demise. Let the players intelligence/skill lead him through his/her destiny! |

I completely agree with Krogon and the 2 following posts... Auction Houses kill personalized Service! They kill Social interaction! And they kill reputation! One thing that I hated most about UO is when they introduced "Repair Deeds". This killed the whole trust value between Blacksmiths that would repair items for other players.. I went from being a very reliable/trushworthy blacksmith to being just another blacksmith that can repair so why does it matter who we choose to do it? I love social interaction, it's a huge part of a community game. To play a game without ever meeting others or making friends, just isn't my idea of fun. I like to be counted on, to be trusted amongst others, and to be known for my efforts. I did like the FFXI Auction house though admittingly, but Aside from that and the card game (Was it Tetramaster? I don't remember, lol) I despised the game. |

Well, I guess a $300 dollar release price could buy a 12 months subscription, lol.. And if you really don't want to pay with a credit card each month you could just head to the store and buy another retail version each month for $50+ bucks... But all kidding aside.. It's all been said before.. People need to be paid, this is the real world.. We have bills, jobs, deadlines, chores, and lots of obsticles. And to who made that 75 Million dollar comment about WOW, lol, that was great! But you know they also have to pay fees for each server including both N. American and European.. And Ongoing Customer Support, development, Forums, Designers, company cars, etc... Make no mistake.. Lead Employees at Blizzard behind the WoW project are the Leaders of the industry in thier proffessions.. They can make some really stupid decisions sometimes s to what they do implement, but believe me when I say that they can do anything they wanted to do when it comes to what they do. They just lack the Medieval personality/mindset. And depending on how old you are.. Hell, when I was 10-15 yrs old I could always find a neighbor that would allow me to do some kind of chore to make some money... My mother never was the type to give me field trip money or lunch money, let alone money for things like movies/bikes/video games, so I took it upon myself to go door to door asking if there was anything that I could do to earn some money.. A good story helps as well.. Such as saving for a Mother's Day gift, or a Birthday present. I dunno, the more upstanding and worthy you look the more of a chance you have with someone giving you an opportunity to do it.. Just make sure you do a good job! or they'll never let you do it again! personally I started with about 4 places in my trailer park raking leaves and gardening. making anywhere from $4 - $25 Dollars a job. Then as i started to save money up for a Sega Master System and some games, it quickly turned into 10 trailors with an avg weekly income of $150 bucks.. Not bad for a 12yr old!!! I eventually became so popular amongst the neighborhood that I started giving off jobs to friends that live in the area with me. I got a share of the profits of course :) Was doing great until I turned 16 and got a real job :/ The little business kind of ended there as my friends decided it wasn't worth all the work to keep it up without me hassling them, lol. |

First off.. There is just no way that this game is VaporWare.. Aye, it's been quite a long rides thus far and the fans of the old have been replaced with fans of the new.. REPEATEDLY! But faith still remains. No game will reach this level of completion and drop off the radar!(Aside from UxO of course) Maybe a game that is too much in common with another game on the market, maybe.. But this game is Groundbreaking! Breathtaking! Obviously they are drawing from other games.. But look at the games that they draw from! They draw from the Originals, the best of their kind! The games that other MMO's today steer away from this game hits dead on! It's the game that is more than a game.. The culmination of ever little boy's fantasy! Lol... It may not have the largest fanbase in history, but that's a good thing isn't it? Look at wow.. Do you really want a repeat of that? Smaller Communities are Stronger Communities! Committed, Faithful, and Knowledgeable. Outsiders ruin games.. Carebears ruin games.. This will be the world that we'd all rather be a part of. Who wants a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game when we have Darkfall? The first Massive Content Online Real-Time Strategy Environment? Darkfall is more than a Game! It shall be a Martyr for all to be jealous of! |

Well, I know that it was an old interview.. But they specifically state that they are well aware of the faults of the SB System and are adjusting around that!

Good? Heh, your friend is just being subtle.. Nothing tops combat in DarkFall! Nothing! Hehe, my own personal bias aside, it's very "real time" first person combat with more abilities/spells than ever imagined for a game to have. All weapons/armor are craftable in game and it will be very hard to be overly "twinked" out.. Combat is a game of chess (skill & strategy)... |

At least theres some people that have a brain left
General Discussion « Darkfall 1/22/07 12:53:42 AM
There is no amount of bad graphics or low vid count stats possible that could steer me away from this game.. Darkfall is the game that I've waited my entire life to play, and hopefully before my life is over will get a chance to play! UO, the most amazing game of it's time.. A few small faults of course, but nevertheless never outdone! Of course the game currently is crap on a stick, but it defineately knew how to do things... And Darkfall is drawing off of just that! The best and more! I may never have a real life again once this game hits the shelves... So at the moment I am just living life to the fullest while I still have the time to do so :) |

people enjoy being "Knowitalls"... And there will be fansites that explain all sorts of things/methods/strategies/guides... If for nothing more than "the fastest way to gain" in said skill guides... Not to mention that while something may make us rich, there will be clanmates that you may want to spread your knowledge with and allow further success amongst your clans as well.. I think there will be a lot of usefull internet info sites... Being the kindhearted kind of guy that I am, I'll probably even be providing info myself once I get into the game. |

As for the Actual review. I'd have to agree with the majority of the thread here. I thought the guy was dead on with every word, and then he goes and rates it at least +3 points higher than I would have in any category. I mean this is for obvious reasons I guess. There are too many other games out there with high scores, and for wow to get the score it deserves as the #1 top MMORPG on the market, it would need a comparitive score. Just know that as gamers ourselves, what needed to be said, WAS SAID! Doesn't matter what the rating is, people will take heed of this. And I'm sure Blizzard already knows all of this. I just doubt that they'll bother doing anything about it until future competition such as Darkfall or Warhammer Online step in at which time it'll be too late for blizzard. To make things clear, I do not care for the 40-Man raiding part of this game in the slightest. All 3 of my roomates all participate in WOW Raiding. From 20-Man ZG/AQ to NEF, and most of the way through Naxx. They come home from work EVERY NIGHT, EVERY FREAKING NIGHT, ALL THE FREAKING TIME, and jump into a raid group and head out to some mind numbing instance. This is so mind numbing that it's DRIVING ME CRAZY and I'm not even the one playing it! I can't go out to eat with them, I can't go see a movie, I can't go bowling, or play tennis, basketball, NOTHING! Why? Cause if they don't go on these stupid runs, they lose their place in line for gear, and even risk being terminated from their guilds. WTF is that? They try to get me into these guilds too. I don't even have a response for that. Why the hell would I want my entire life to be void just so I can have a higher repair bill? Why do I want to run the same freaking instances every night for months and months just to maybe get something that could upgrade my character? I'm not the quite type either. If I were there in those runs and people were going afk or waiting 15 mins before a boss fight FOR NO APPARENT REASON, I'd be going off! SEriously, how can they just stand around so much? Hell it takes them 30 mins just to get to the damn instance... Hello? I've got better things to do... I can't spend 3-8 hours a night doing damn instance runs with complete morons, or people that are "supposed" to be funny, but annoy the hell out of me. I have absolutely zero interest in that crap. I'd barely be willing to do it if the gear was guranteed to all drop in one run for me. The only reason that I still play this game is to play with my UI.. Period! I love pvp, but I'm not going to devote my life to it. I love 5-Man instances, but I'm not gonna wait 30mins-2hours waiting on a group. And I sure as hell am not going to join a guild, do the runs, get my gear, AND THEN KEEP DOING THE RUNS? WTF! I didn't even want to do them to begin with.. And now that I don't need them anymore, I have to keep it up? Screw That! WTH are you think'n? I could care less how much "Strategy" it takes, or how we must be a good guild to be able to do what we do, BLAH BLAH BLAH! I don't care, get me the hell out of it. And then what? If I get the gear, what now? Oh wow, now I can raid just that tiny, non-existant touch of a stat better. Who cares? I don't wanna raid to begin with. Oh, PVP? Yeah, that's great.. I used to actually have to use skill and wit to overcome my ememies, but now I can just stand there and spam a few buttons? NO! I don't want to be a god on the battlefield, I just want the freaking gods to stop their "elitist" attitudes. You are not "the best" player of your class in all of time just because you do well in BG's. You just may be the most geared. Wow, way to totally show how little you really are. I don't care. People can do what they want. I don't need a bigger sword, or a suit of impenetrable resistance to own your ass, and I never will. Because when it comes down to it, you're just a loser that thinks he's all that because you have no life elsewhere so it just has to be! I will be getting the expansion for no other reason than to be able to play with my friends, or at least dream of doing so if they are ever not raiding. I am observing both Darkfall, and Warhammer Online, and both interest me greatly. I'll be getting both of them when they release, and I pray that darkfall actually does release because it seems to have the most potential in my eyes. /rant I have to admit though, the best thing wow has over anything else, is customizable UI. I know that no other game will probably ever have that and it does make me a sad panda, but I guess I can come to terms with that. |
