"EVE can charge subscriptions - people like to quasi-live in EVE. Nobody wants to quasi-live in SWTOR, or, it is not possible to just live there. You can't live on a race track. Race tracks are for racing. You go around a few times and quit. Why subscribe to that?"

And in typical blog fashion, it was written by a clueless git.

SWTOR is not F2P, its freemium...and there are plenty of people that have chosen to "quasi-live" in actual F2P games. The writer is clearly limited in his knowledge of the MMO genre.

the database was such a royal mess that it required restarts every single day.

Don't forget being told that it was normal for a game that handled such a massive amount of data, which was caused in part to being so kind as to allow players to horde so much stuff in the generous amount of bank space we were given.

Had no respect for gamers at all...yet it was the players that made the game great, remove them and SWG was a poorly designed game from the ground up.

Sigh, whatever.

If you want to hear about what i did wrong, why not join the Q&A thread and ask me what my biggest mistakes were?  I have to go over to that thread rather than answering here.

Oh, and until 6 months ago I was a VP at Disney. :P

Not that I believe you are "Raph", but what does working at Disney have to do with you not being able to get work in the MMO field or getting funded for your MMO ideas...oh wait, nothing!

BTW, no need to join the Q&A about "fails"...it wont take away the things you took credit for, which you did not do, nor the things you passed off onto others in order to protect your false sense of being a great designer. Sure wont take away from the things said to gamers...you disrespected just enough of your NON-Fanboy players for it to follow you around forever, we will keep reminding the gaming world of it.

Hopefully enough to keep you out of designing anything big again, though im sure the companies capable of funding one already know enough about your record to keep that from happening anyway.

This is typical of Koster, when writing something where he has a great deal of time to word it, he will sound like a humble man that knows what he is talking about. Every other time however its the exact opposite. He takes credit for everything unless its bad and magically he had nothing to do with it even though he is running the show and thinks of his own work like a fanboy. He has been compared to Steve Jobs by his own former co-workers.

I havent seen anyone as arrogant or full of himself in the gaming industry, the closest is Don Mattrick.

Anyway, he hasn't been able to get a job or funding for his projects for 7 years for a reason.

And no, I will never forget being told during SWGs beta that the reason we cant be given more than 1 character slot is due to the amount of polygons each character has which takes up on massive space on the server...the man has no respect for players intellect.

Even if utterly harsh (too harsh to me), this holds quite a good amount of truth, sadly. The whole recent Koster informations sound pretty much like "spitting in the soup that made you" to me.

I know it was harsh, but sadly to me personally...anyone that disrespects gamers deserves no quarter. I hold the same view towards the makers of DaoC who have stated over and over that players are too stupid to be able to form any connection without developers creating it,or have any sense of pride on their own unless its created for them...then there is the comments about how were are all too dumb to be able to tell who an enemy is unless they look different from us. You can still hear it in some of the TESO interviews as they have a smug smirk on their faces as they explain why a game must have racial/faction splits for the poor little gamers minds to wrap around fighting each other.

Sure are a lot of people fighting hard to keep having to pay money to play a game no matter how much information conflicts with the reason to do it no longer exists...or ever did for that matter.

I can see its obvious that TESO is going to beat SWTOR at one thing at least...letting people down in more ways.

TSW isn't really underappreciated due to its really horrible animations and other aspects that vastly draw away from its otherwise great base game design. If Funcom was capable of fixing their mistakes (See AO and AoC for a prime example of not being able to) then TSW would have stood a chance.

So last night I was watching this show, it was a dream come true as such a big fan of the series.

The show was about a guy that moved into an apartment and used a ring as a deposit. His landlord, Sauron was a real jerk. The two guys living nextdoor to him, Legolas and Gimli were a great comedic duo that lightened the storyline with their one liners. The main character, Frodo and his crazy old uncle Gandalf (who has a major crush on the landlords wife Galadriel) has a great friend that constantly drops buy, usually tripping, named Sam. The entire show has good ol Frodo chasing....

Ahh yes, a dream show created for all fans of Lords of the Rings, never thought I would see it happen...LoTRs every week on my TV.

That pretty much sums up this whole TESO fiasco. TES in name, not in content or design. Remove the names of people and places and no one would call it a TES rip off or clone, they would however state that its a little too much like DaoC.

Every time I play Skyrim I think, "I wish I could play with friends". No matter what happens, if I can play an ES game with a friend, they will have succeeded. Why does this site and it's fans pick things to death, and doom them to failure before they even come out?

You are not going to be playing a ES game with a friend. You are going to be playing a game with a friend that is using the ES name to get you to play it.

TESO has next to nothing outside of NAMES that makes it ES, well and along with graphics that SLIGHTLY look like a 10 year old ES game. The story is horrible, it has none of the exploration and depth ES games have and it completely lacks the depth of an MMO. Much of what they dare call "ES" is masked BS wrapped in an MMO box. Even the so called "freedom" to make the character of your choosing is BS...sure you can play any way you like, as long as you have the right weapon equipped...want to heal? Better have a healing staff, but then if you do have a healing staff you better say goodbye to your fire spells, which you cant cast if you have an ice staff equipped...and then there is the lack of clarity that you will be able to max out EACH of those attack skills and not be locked into spending only a set amount of skill points.

The game is ES in name only, its locked into mediocrity thanks to developers with a lack of imagination when it comes to the small box that is the MMO genre they helped to create.

If the game wasn't for you, which is ok and I can understand, move on already.

Totally agree. But sadly, this is an increasingly popular trend.

Players don't stop playing games anymore when they're done playing. It's all about complaining to the entire world, listing all the reasons why the game failed, why the game would have been the best game ever (if only the Devs had listened to the Complaints), and to continue the complaining like it's some twisted form of a game in itself.

The sad part is you youngsters that weren't a part of the days when good MMOs were coming out left and right...during the time when beta testers actually worked closely with the game makers and help shape the design of the game. You know, what Richard Garriott is doing RIGHT NOW with Shroud of the Avatar...bringing back the GOOD MMOs with things PLAYERS actually think is good and not just non-game playing designers working for a corporation focused only on money.

Remember reading about corpse runs in EQ1? Camping? Actual GOOD crafting? Heavy focus on grouping? All came from beta 1 testers. EQ was not focused heavily on grouping and had bad crafting during early beta 1, I remember the damn conversations with the developers and the questions they were asking us.

Ever read about portal system in Asherons Call? If not, the very reason why MMOs have a recall/bind ability now is due to that game which got its idea from BETA TESTERS who came up with the idea, a spell/ability that allows you to bind to a point and return to it. Just one of MANY ideas implemented from companies that listened to players. Hell, its because of that game that games like SWG had such a varied UI and why WoW and other games allowed custom addons, it was the first game to have a massive modding community that made the game so much better to the point Turbine started working directly with them.

But, no doubt you at some point complain about how the genre is stagnant and there are too many clones...well, there are your designers going with what THEY THINK YOU LIKE...

As long as it has a deep story capable of penetrating the deepest parts of our psyche until we reach the pinnacle of gaming orgasmic delight...

It also sent a clear message to crafters and hardcore gamers...I am all for getting the sellers but not at the expense of innocent people. That's some Gestapo crap right there.

Swtor will be forever scorned for not being Swg pre cu.
What I don't get is why those people don't hate SOE for Swg.

LA mainly called the shots with SWG, and SWTOR is like an enhanced NGE. Both games were heavily influenced by LA, and Dallas Dickinson who worked on SWG and SWTOR.

LA is now no more

Yeah yet funny how somehow SWG was great all thanks to Raph Koster...

Anyway, at this rate SWTOR may become a decent MMO in about 2 or 3 years...maybe.

I know that one character will be able to visit all three faction areas, but I have always been an altoholic. I have a favorite race in each faction and I would like to play as each of them. I also like to play all roles in an MMO, so I want one character to be a tank, one character to be a healer, and one character to be a damage dealer. Will there be any way for me to accomplish this? – Cody G.

The first step is admitting you have a problem. But yes, you can have multiple characters.

.

. .

'  '

oo

Oo

oO

ÓÒ

So you can have multiple character and problems but we are not going to answer any of your multiple questions.

dude asked if he could make alts.  they told him yes.

Yes and he also did NOT answer the part where the guy was asking if he could make a character in all three different factions...which is MASSIVELY important seeing as how it wasn't allowed in DaoC and War, the other games these idiots were involved with.

They never answer any questions that will separate this game from what SRPG TES players are expecting.

Massive sales at release, massive drop-off after because it isn't a good MMO and it sure isn't what the vast majority of TES players are going to expect from the smoke and mirrors the company is putting up to sucker TES players into buying it. Its a hybrid that isn't going to satisfy players of either genre because it doesn't focus on either and is spread too thin.

So what we are being told by the moral high ground having writer is that since they cannot fathom a situation where sex in a game is OK, we should all stay in this nice little box created by their minds.

Why does a game have to have sex as the focus just for having it in it? Why do we have to have sex with a boss, or something we are fighting in order to have sex IN the game?

Such a closed minded article, which is expected because its about sex, and most people have such boring ass sex lives they cannot fathom it being remotely fun in any way.

Others however can imagine a game where sex is just part of it, much like in life. A game where two players can have it, one gets pregnant, has a child and that child becomes a playable character (or make it twins so both players get one)...and not just games where we go around humping everything in sight like some porn game.

Well you do have a point on the underlined, I guess there are plenty of companies stuck in the past like the Wildstar guys, Elderscrolls, FF. Archage hasn't said what they will have as a model yet maybe they can catch your loyalty.

World of Wildstar isn't bringing anything new and I have beta tested TESO which is a pure money grab via the IP name, it isn't a decent MMO or SRPG, its hollowness isn't even outdone by SWTOR which at least had decent storylines. The only game out or coming out that's going to be a sub that will REMAIN a sub is going to be this one...only because the company is Japanese and they would rather shut the game down than try a new model.

TESO will go F2P as fast as SWTOR did and Wildstar more than likely will go faster because NCSoft knows they can make more via B2P, they only allowed a sub because the game maker asked for it.

I think the ideal model for a substantial MMORPG is a subscription based one: it gives a sense of exclusivity to the gamer, very especially when a particular MMORPG looks oriented to a niche public that looks for a long-term gaming experience. In addition to this, I think the subscription model in certain way ensures customer’s tranquility with regards to maintenance, missions updates, dev run events and the so. No need to mention that, in my opinion, a subscription model discourages undesirable MMO fauna (trolls, kids, MMO tourists…).

For the reasons given above, I have the sensation that FTP might not be the best model for The Repop. Anyway, this could be a personal prejudice or perhaps there’s something I’m not getting.

What is your opinion about this?

It is the underlined. Your paragraph above that has been proven wrong so many times its sickening to think some people still attempt to claim that a subscription means anything other than a company fleecing consumers.

The only wrong way to do F2P is to do it the western way, if they go the Asian route it will mean nothing other than larger profits than anything they could hope to get with another model, which is another thing that has been proven so many times its sickening that western companies just plain don't get it because they are so focused on the old ways.

whats the point of voting if you did not buy/play the game. Think thats what the OP was going for....thus why a poll like this really does not good

Yeah, I kinda wonder how many people did just like VassagoMael and voted even though they didn't even buy the game.

The OP did not ask only for those who played the game.

I however only voted because I would have bought the game if it was B2P, the subscription model is antiquated and only still used by companies stuck in the past and I will not support any game that uses it no matter how good it may be.

Completely wrong about both games.  WoW never brought anything to the genre?  How about making it accessible to millions of people by streamlining many of the tedious game systems found in current MMOs and bringing it to the masses?  And Eve not a sandbox?  What?  That's too misguided a statement to even reply to.

In order for a game to bring something new, it must be NEW. WoW took everything from other games and put it into one game. A new combo is not new idea, its just a combo of other ideas.

It would be like saying, hey, im going to take a screwdriver and put a toothpick on the handle Look, I invented something new!

P.S being popular does not mean it brought something new to the genre...just means it watered it down to get more to play it.
