Bioware is letting the genre down, pre-CU SWG gamers who wanted vindication.. and so is LA.

How are they letting the genre down? Thats your opinion of course, but Bioware dont owe the genre or pre-CU SWG players anything.

As long as its an enjoyable game - who cares if its themepark or sandbox. Except of course the people who think the only good game is a sandbox so everyone else should play what they like.

As for replayability - if every class has a different storyline, and they put more content in than all their other titles combined - then it sounds at this point like there will be plenty of replayability. Until we can actually play it - thats all anyone has an opinion with no in game experience to back it up.

I have to agree - people posting threads about bright wizards is not an isolated incident.

Are people really suggesting playing a melee DPS?

Order have Witch Hunter and White Lion. All the other DPS classes are Ranged. Bright Wizard, Shadow Hunter, Engineer.

And whilst I had fun playing my Witch Hunter I was just way too squishy.

So its certainly possible to play a tank like a DPS, you dont get the nice debuffs to reduce healing, or put out quite as much damage, but you survive longer as you have heavy armor.

I object to people stereo-typing classes.

I hear the game wont be released until 2015 when 100 terrabyte drives are available to install it on.

You are proving my point for me. STOP trying to capitalize on IPs! For God's sake, create something new! I haven't been following them, so I don't know the details, but both "Fallen Earth" and "Earthrise" appear to be new creations (of course on old themes, but new nontheless).
Star Wars is old, dead, and spent. Time for something new.

See the difference is - why would I play Earthrise or Fallen Earth (New IP) ahead of any other game? Both new IP & existing IP have their own problems.

- with a new IP you have to create your own fan base - so more marketing required. On the flip side - you arent bound by the IP as you are making it up.

- with an existing IP you have a ready made fan base, you just need to appeal with them. On the flip side you have to stick to the IP to avoid annoying the horde of rabid fans. Bioware are getting around that by setting it thousands of years before the movies so they can create their own IP withint the star wars universe.

As for Star-Trek - they had a string of flop movies and I dont think they have produced a decent Star Trek game ever.

Since no matter what you actually say about ao, it is still one of the most advanced mmos out there.

Normally I would put gameplay ahead of graphics - but last year after downloading AO, installing all the patches - I deleted it after 10 minutes its just such an outdated looking game.

I thought Age of Conan was the new AO.

Star Wars is dead. Let it die peacefully in its sleep. The IP is old, trite, and now hopelessly squeezed dry of anything remotely interesting or entertaining.

The Star Wars fanbois need to move on to other, greener SciFi pastures. This game will only prove my point.

Shame on the big gaming companies for prolonging the inevitable.

Maybe for you it's dead, the millions of fans world wide tell a different story.

Millions of people worldwide have also purchased Brittnay Spears albums. That still doesn't make them quality.

It also doesnt make Brittany Spears music a good I.P for making a game. However in terms of sci-fi what other good IP's are their?

- Star Trek - theres a game in the works
- Star Gate - theres a game in the works

So you can see that the only good sci-fi IP's have the word STAR in their name. Like STAR WARS :)

They could make a Battlestar Galactica, Bablyon 5, Firefly, WH40K etc MMO - but really which one has the brand name recognition that Star Wars does?

I read an indepth review about this game.
It will be an online version of KOTAR, have a linear story line and nothing new in the way of MMORPG.
The sandbox I was hoping for is not this game.
Swing your light saber around and give ole George more money should be the name of this tittle.

First off - the game isnt released so you could not have read a review. You may have read an interview with some of the developers.

Second - I have a sandbox in my backyard you can have - it even has a cubbyhouse. You are correct this is not that game you are hoping for.

Third - my money I spend it where I want - and if I enjoy the game I will spend it here, if I dont I will spend it somewhere else.

Fourth - The story is what they are bringing new to MMO's. So a greater focus on role-playing. You know the last part of MMORPG that everyone else forgets.

I am lvl 25 SM going down Khaine spec. I went Hoeth to get the Armor skill.

1 on 1 vs Witch Elf I can win - against 2 witch elves I die fast - cant wait for the patch that nerfs their ignore 100% armor skill back to ignore 50%.

Really its my choice how I play my tank. The khaine path is designed for two-handers with skills that can only be used with a greatsword.

I use the whirlwind skill all the time - PvE and PvP - but then I like to break through the front lines and disrupt them.

As for tanking people off your healer - any decent opponent would ignore the tank and go the healer anyways.

But it terms of survivability - yes sword and board - you get parry & block and block works on spells. With the greatsword I only get parry.

As a tank one of our roles is to take down the MDPS classes, before they can take down the healers - and the two handed sword does that faster than the sword and board.

So its a trade-off, and personal preference as to which style you play.

In a level/class game the treadmill from 1 to max level is there to teach new people how to play.

Unfortunately WAR lets down new players from the moment they open the box. The manual doesnt explain the core mechanic of any of the classes.

Then there's the gear. At lvl 25 if I want better gear I need to go to the reknown vendor in a keep. So I do that. He doesnt have anything for me as my reknown rank (15) is too low. So what am I to do to get my reknown rank up as fast as possible - grind scenarios.

ORvR just takes too long - you only get serious reknown from taking BO and keeps and the other day I did that its just a warband running around unopposed taking keeps and BO's.

Now a few times I have been in oRvR and their has been an enemy warband on and that is fun, trying to take an objective whilst under attack, hitting the other side in the back when they are trying to take an objective was great.

Most of the time it seems either everything is controlled by order or everything is controlled by Destruction.

PQ's - fun when you can get a group and actually complete one. The rest of the time you just grind level 1 so you can get your gear.

I am enjoying the PvE story.

As for the witching night - yes it got people into the RvR lakes. All they did on the server I was on is stand around in a meaningless pitched fight. No-one wanted to take a keep. THey should have made part of the PQ dependant on keep/bo control.

Wow, really?  So the whole X-Wing and TIE Fighter series never happened?  Or the original KOTOR?  Or Dark Forces?  Those are just the titles I can think of off the top of my head but I can guarantee you this:
Lucas Arts sold more Star Wars PC games before SWG launched than Blizzard sold Warcrafts.  People tend to forget the original War Craft was f*cking terrible.

I had to go look up
Timeline of Star Wars video games to even remember those games you mentioned - apart from Kotor.

Lucas Arts has released 71 Star Wars games - and the majority of them were crap - way to ruin an I.P. Kotor released the same year as SWG and is credited with showing it was still possible to make a good Star Wars game.

I am a big fan of Star Wars - own all 6 movies, 51 books, Kotor, Kotor 2, Battlefront 2 and Empire at War + expansion, never played WOW - but I do own Warcraft 3 and expansion.

Never mind - totally lost the plot on what we were discussing :) Oh yes - Warcraft 1 may have been crap, but Warcraft 2 was better and Warcraft 3 better again. So Blizzard added value to their IP as well as getting a rep for other games like Starcraft and Diablo. So yes I am arguing from a gamer point of view - Blizzard had better recognition to their name with gamers when WOW hit the streets.

On the flip - side Lucas Arts let everyman and their dog make a Star Wars game, and most tanked. So they had all but destroyed their rep with gamers before Bioware revived it with Kotor.

And whilst SWG was a hit compared to other MMO's at the time, back in 2003 the MMO market just wasnt that big. Then WOW hit the scenes and dragged so many millions more gamers into the MMO space.

Its done when its done then we can play greatests hardcore pvp game ever

Counterstrike? Battlefield 2? those are hard core PvP games.

I expect they are waiting until they have a few of the game issues around class balance and rvr rewards fixed before they put out a trial.

I think the difference in how well they performed can be put down to a few things
- fans of WOW's ip were computer gamers - so all their fan base were already gamers

- Star Wars IP - is from the films and the books - so its not necessarily gamers.

- advertising - WOW did a far batter job of advertising

- release date - the fact that WOW was released a couple of years after SWG meant there was just a lot more homes with internet access.

- graphics - WOW's graphics are cartoony - which IMO suggests parents are more likely to let their young kids play a cartoony fantasy game that a more releastic (shooter type - talking about parents with no idea of gaming) game

Once WOW was out there it just exploded numberwise on word of mouth.

- strength of the I.P in the gaming industry - Warcraft were hugely successful games, whereas at the time SWG was released there had not been a good Star Wars game released.

Lets say you are a... plumber. I pay you to install some pipes in my house. You take the money I pay you, never install the pipes and run off to spend the money at the nearest strip club. Am I going to just say "oh well its his money he can spend it however he wants!"
NO! Because its not your money until you do the job you were paid to do. NCsoft gave Richard Garriot that money to produce Tabula Rasa, which he didn't do because he was off screwing around in space. He didn't earn that money, he pretty much stole it.
I agree with Knifo. Richard Garriot better hope he never runs into any former TR players on the street... or in any dark alley ways.

SO you are suggesting either R.G stole money from NCsoft for his space trip, or that NCSoft funded the trip - neither of those things happened. If you think otherwise - provide a link.

The salary he earns as a developer is his to do what ever he wants with. As is the money he gets by selling his shares in NCSoft, the money they paid him when they bought his company, and any money he had prior to that or from his other ventures.

NCSoft did not fund his space adventure - they thought about it - then said no. So again - the money he spent on his trip - was his personal money from his bank account - not money anted up by NCSoft and again he can do whatever he wants with it.

Sandbox is about having an open world with possibilties for people to make their own allegiances, make their own choices, creating their own content. Talking of which where is mmo 2.0 - where gamers can add and share content. A sandbox is 2.0. But WoW and WAR and AoC and most like SW:TOR are like Web 1.0 where there is less social interaction, no social media, no facebook, no twitter, no comments or blogs, just participation by flipping existing content.

I think what you are looking for is 2nd life in a Star Wars skin.

I also think what pissed people off was your arrogant know it all attitude in your original post with gems like these

Too bad BIOWARE blew it. They had a chance at a large IP - they had a chance at making the perfect mmo - they had a chance to set the industry straight on how to make online roleplaying games.

Instead they produce ... THIS?

You can agree or disagree but it is plain for all those who dare open their eyes, that this game will cater to the "ohh wow jedis with lightsabers kiddy crowd" - and not to mature players.

So you insulted everyone who disagrees with you. If you had made your later post first there would have been a much better dialogue instead of the responses you got to your original rant post.

As a mature - casual player - I will wait for the game to hit open beta so I can try it before I decide to buy it. As far as value for entertainment goes - I currently pay $20 for a Star Wars book (yes prices are obscene in Australia), that lasts me 4 or 5 hours.

So I would be happy to pay $20 a month for a story based game that has more content than their last 8 games combined. That amount of content should last me a year or more.

I think with this game Bioware is catering to the I want to be the Hero crowd which is the usual audience for single player games, as most mmo's you arent the hero - everyone else is doing the same quest and it resets 30 seconds after you kill the boss dude.

Even though Craig dodge the question about the subscribers, he can't pull a white one on the annual report. In the second quarter 2008, AoC had over 400k subscribers. That's quite the respectable number is you ask me. That report and it's numbers prove the trolls and naysayers are full of shit, but nothing new there
Funcom Q2 2008 annual report
They do experience a drop in revenues, but we still are in a global recession so they feel the effect of it as bad as anyone else do.
Edit:To the clueless troll below me, nope I'm not a fanboy of the game. I don't even like it, nor do I play it. I'm just trying to bring some facts to the table as there is way too much guesswork going around about the game, and other games aswell too for that matter. Just have to wait for their next report to check those numbers again. To you guys who say the game is dying, why would Funcom put most of their effort into it if it's dying?Besides if you check Q3 they earned more revenues compared to Q2 so what does that tell us, hmmm? So stop talking out your ass. That goes for all the other trolls and naysayers aswell.

Lol - they lost 50% of customers in the first 6 weeks - hardly a glowing report. And to qoute from their Q3 report

After the very strong launch period, the average
subscription period for Age of Conan has been
shorter than expected and this has led to a
reduction in subscriber levels in the period.

Also not a glowing report. Perhaps you need to learn to read.

However I would think that an xbox360 version would be a good thing for the PC players as to release on the xbox the game would need to be pretty much bug free. Also the xbox has lower graphics processing power and less memory so they would need to improve the performance/memory useage. All bonuses for the PC players.

Explain me how tha hell a game facing mass exodus and also commonly being regarded as the biggest "Blaaahh" of the year, also can hold one of the highest user scores in MMORPG. This is just insane. Is MMORPG in bed with MJ? It thoroughly piss me off how biased this gaming site is. I was even Fcking banned for 2-3 weeks for saying I had a lot of CTD and lag when I fist started WAR (I don't know if this is still the case since I am unsubbed but..). Today we all know how poor performance WAR has and might dare to hint to that in these forums (and only occationally get banned). Thats well and all, but is it really OK that MMORPG as an objective reviewer walk so obviously arm in arm with a game producer like Mythic?
People what do you think on this? I call for MMORPG resetting that userrating thing so that we can get a more true reflection of the game.

There is no bias - the ratings you refer to are from people voting/rating the game. There is no input in that system from the site.

I understand you are upset that a game you like (AoC) has a worse rating than a game you dont like (War).

I suggest you go to Funcom's forums and start a thread suggesting everyone rig the vote by coming over here and rating AOC 10 and WAR 1. Thats how useful the rating system is.

That 30 million wouldve gotten us Class PAU's, player housing, PVP arenas. and more story and content. That 30 million was prob all trasa needed. I hope he gets spit on by all gamers and game developers.

His money he can spend it how he wants. I hope you learn to deal with your anger issues.

I played T.R for 18 months - 9 in beta, 9 in release. At the end of the day (max level) there just wasnt anything for me to do.

There were some great mechanics in T.R, loved the portals, combat, cover etc. Hated the crafting. Liked the stories - but the quest/morals was crap there were no consequences.

Player housing - stupid idea. I think it needed - factions so quests would mean something, different quest lines for replayability, Bane as a playable race (PvP). PAU's never liked the idea.

Personally - I would just plug in a second monitor if alt-tabbing gives issues.
