I will say this again.

No game developer on the planet could have saved Tabula Rasa after the complete design change from a sword/magic game into a psuedo first person shooter alien game. This project was doomed the moment that decision was made. Throwing out years of work and millions of dollars invested in an attempt to rebuild the game from the ground up in that time frame was the kiss of death.

The only question unanswered is: who had enough power to make that decision. Was it NCSoft or Richard Garriot?

I cannot think of a single game designer with that type of authority over a game unless they own the company. I can however think of several companies that have screwed over their game designers and the games they were designing. I'm not saying Garriot didn't screw up here, but this whole situation has upper management stink all over it.

I disagree that it was doomed from the moment they decided to change the design.

My understanding is they spent 3+ years and a bucket load of money on the original design. And at some point they realised the game wasnt going to work. Now at this point a lot of companies would push it out the door to try and re-coup their investment.

Instead they scrapped that, used a different engine and basically started over. I think T.R failed because they didnt have enough time/money to complete the game. Apart from the vision issues.

So for their money NCSoft got two failed games. The original T.R that was scrapped, and the revamped T.R that launched.

And the closing of TR has dealt a harsh blow to game business in general to the city of Austin.

Even so - The Garriot brothers starting up Origin Games in Austin had a lot to do with getting the game development business up and running in Austin.

Interview with Jake Song

as an opposing point of view to comments like

That's not quite right, bro, Jake Song lives in Korea he wasn't part of the dev team for TR.

What happened was that Song heard about the HUGE amount of money and stock options that Kim Taek-jin (NCsoft CEO) had given to the Garriotts just to get them to come on board with NCSoft North America and he got so pissed that he walked out.

They lost a tremendous asset in Jake Song and all they got in return for that loss was a pair of fruits that tore the guts out of NCsoft in the North American gaming market and left them looking like fools.

Song was briefly in Austin in the early stages. I think he caught on early that not much in the way of real work was going on, but NcSoft sided with the Garriotts against their star and veteran producer.

So I will just chip in here and say - I dont feel insulted.

I also understand that people remember me as a big fan of the game when it came out and a mod on a fan site. So they do have a certain impression of me.

And anyone reading my posts I hope gets the impression I enjoyed the game, hit the level cap and left. As thats the deal.

I have no respect left for the guy, at all, and I sincerely hope he quietly retires and stays away from the gaming industry.

Its not my job in life to try and change your opinion.. So I respect your right to have your own opinion.

He stood back and tried to be the "idea guy" on Tabula Rasa

- from my understanding thats what being executive producer entails - having the big picture vision.

the fanboys that comprised Destination Failure Games didn't have the abilities to pull it off.

I think the main issue I have with your posts is the way you express them :) Which is based on the way I was raised to be polite/respectful to people whether I liked them or not.

I picked up Mass Effect for Christmas. Great game - played through twice. For my $50 it was around 15 to 20 hours play time each time through.

If Bioware can deliver the same story/gameplay and I pay $15 a month for 40 hours play time - I say go for it.

As long as I can group with other people.

Traditionally the HERO save the universe type games have been the domain of single player games. I am interested to see if Bioware can pull this off.

I like to play the hero - but its not very heroic if 30 seconds after I finish a quest it resets so the next person can do it.

On the flip-side I understand different people want to do different things in games - so the game needs to be more than a focus on story. I would like to see crafting, the ability to explore, areas for socializing etc.

Bioware have said the game will have more content than a lot of their single player games combined. So thats a lot of content. I hope they deliver.

They also said there will be different quests for different classes - so if they can deliver that - I get to try alts and replayability.

PvP in some sort or other from having Sith vs Jedi.

I am happy to wait for more information and see how it pans out.

LOL, one thing is for certain:

Whatever he had in the Ultima days got lost somewhere along the line because he sure didn't bring any of it to Tabula Rasa.

{ Mod Edit }

I disagree the game was pathetic. I enjoyed it. Obviously not enough other people did to keep it running.

I liked the logos. I thought a lot more could have been done with them. Early on in beta you had to really explore to find them. But then because abilities were dependant on them - you got quests to find them.

There was a lot of talk about moral choices in quests making a difference - at the end of the day it was just a quest with two choices and it really didnt make a difference. They needed some sort of faction system for this to work. So you helped one faction and pissed off another, opening up new quests with faction A and closing off quests with faction b.

There was also a lot of talk about the instance missions affecting the main battlefield. This didnt happen - I can recall one mission in divide that possibly slowed the spawn rate of predators.

There were certainly few if any class specific quests. My engineer couldnt run around the battlefield fixing things. I think going with a class system a lot of work needed to be put into the game to make the classes really have different useful roles on the battlefield.

PvP - I agree with you this was tacked on the end as an afterthought. Most of the time in development the game was being touted as PvE only. I think if a game goes this way then it needs something like raids or something to make you want to keep playing.

Personally I liked the FPS feel, cover, pace and fast travel that T.R had. I liked being able to jump in for a short time and defend a base, or do an instance. I liked that money was so easy to come by that gold sellers were useless :)

I really really hated the crafting system. It was such a pain trying to find an EMP rifle and I couldnt assemble one from parts. I had a footlocker full of components that I had no use for.

I really really dislike that NCSoft dont have a multi-game pass

Apparantly you care about it as much as Ichijo and I do, since you cared enough to join the discussion and add some laughable links to "historical record."

I know it's painful to have identified with someone for so many years, only to watch his decline and possible disgrace.
But I have to belong to a blog that forbids all critics, so you need to find one with freer speech to join in and defend. I guess it's frustrating that you can't just call nanny and have me thrown out.

My caring was more that Ichijo's post read to me as though he thought R.G had done no coding on any Ultima games.

And whilst my gaming days go back 20+ years the Ultima series (including UO) are games I never played. So there's no 'Identification' from that. My interest is remaining respectful of past contributions made.

What blog? Are you saying wikipedia is a blog? If you have other sources that have any information on game developers development history post a link.

DDO I know of and I used to play P&P d&D back in the day - but I refuse to pay for DDO when I can play Neverwinternights for free.

I think NWN was the killer for DDO.

I liked Guild Wars class/skill setup - primary/secondary class and you pick the skill set of 8 skills you want to take out on each adventure.

The 2nd amendment, the right to bear arms, is the very reason that the United States has never been invaded on the mainland by armed troops.

Australia has never been invaded and we dont have a mandated right to bear arms.

New Zealand is the same. So I dont think the two go hand in hand.

Having more guns around seems to be associated with more gun suicides, and more suicides overall. A paper published in this week’s prestigious New England Journal of Medicine compares gun suicide rates in the 15 US states with the highest rate (47%) of household ownership with six states with the lowest rates (15%). While the rates of non-firearm suicide were equal in these two groups, the states with high gun ownership had 3.7 times more male gun suicides and 7.9 times more female gun suicides than the low gun ownership states.

The USA has 14.3 times Australia’s population, 104 times our total firearm-caused deaths (30,143 in 2005 vs 289 in 2003), and 294 times Australia’s firearm homicide rate (12,352 in 2005 vs just 42 in 2005/06). In 1979, 705 people died from gunshots in Australia. Despite population growth, in 2003, this number had fallen to 289.

Guns make it easier to commit suicide and easier to kill someone in a fit of pique.

On the police - there are good and bad in any large organization.

Who NEVER has too much class to boast?

Which one has a passion for game development? Which one has a passion for his eccentric lifestyle?

Who hired Koster to work on UO?

Who paid for the development of UO?

Who cares who was the driving force behind UO? :)

I agree - even playing extremely casually - I had fun for 9 months, reached max level then left. There was nothing to keep me in the game once I hit max level.

Sure I could have gone back to a different class and done it all again - but for me - where I alt a lot on other games I found no replayability there wasn't enough differentiation in class/skill to make the game play significantly different for another class and there wasn't different race/content that other games have.

They did away with a lot of the time wasting /grind that other games have which is great, but since they didnt double the content everyone ran through it fast and left.

Also some players will be on anonymously so they dont get spammed by the gold sellers - so they wont show in the search.

I agree - when people got to the end - there was nothing else to do and almost zero re playability so they left.

I thought the crafting sucked. At the time I quit I had a footlocker full of components and bit from critters that I could do nothing with.

T.R did away with a lot of the time wasting. I am so sick of riding a horse around in WAR. I would like my portals back.

Amazing - I had fun with T.R for 18 months and then moved on to something else. You appear to have let your angst at getting booted from beta consume you until now.

Hope you are feeling better now and can move on with your life.

It doesnt mean such style is bad, its just not my kind of game. Thats neither drama nor whining, its a statement about MY preferrences.

lol - I will give you a hint

A pity. Another game bites the dust, another big flop in the making. Sigh.

Right there is the killer for your whole post that turns it into a - I dont like this type of game - therefore the game will fail post.

Still not fixed, i consider the overpowered condition of WH and WE as Bugged and not as overpowered.
Its even worse, these 2 classes are now killing others not in 5 or 6 sec, no since last patch its 3-4 seconds. ......

Sorceror and BWs are also still far to strong because all the RESIST Gear isnt working.
I have 55% resist in Elemental and it brings nothing.
CONCLUSION > Warhammer is still the most imbalanced and unfair game on the market.

Maybe its the player not the game. On the Warhammer alliance forums I can see the BW complaining they cant hurt anyone because the resists are stacking and people are running around with 80% resist.

Try checking your combat log.

Example heres a post from a lvl 31 RP who died in 4 seconds to a witch elf. So its possible - but half the damage they took was from moving around with enfeebling strike on - so they did half the work for the WE. But that seems to be the exception not the rule.
