Customer retention improving in Age of Conan in early 2009 "Official" (Quartley Report Released Info)
General Discussion « Age of Conan 2/25/09 1:40:39 AM
Yes - I think I looked at the NPD charts for the U.S - so I assumed they lumped the Warcraft & Expansion together. For Darkfall - good point - with a third the developers how can they produce a quality MMO if other developers have trouble - Funcom / Mythic. Either - their title just isnt as good, they take 3 times as long to develop, or they work more effectively, or its so sandbox the players have to make all the content. Certainly with other software projects you do hit a point where the more developers you have , the less extra productivity you get. It just gets too large, so more time spent in meetings etc. I was just boggled thinking about it. So I went 120 developers, assuming 80% productivity and a 35 hour week and averaging 4 weeks = 120 * 4 * 28 = 13,440 hours of work done on AOC in a month. Thats a lot of work. Is it really more than 1 person could do in ten years or is there a lot of inefficiency from having that many people. They cant all be working on patches, so some are working on content that will come out on a longer cycle, some are working on expansion or whatever. Still its a staggering amount of work - in 6 months its like 80,000 hours work on the game. |

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. However I should mention < 1% of MMO gamers agree with you. Thats based on them voting by where they spend their MMO $. |

So with 120 developers - that would mean in one month - the equivalent of 10 man years of development was done in AOC. ie 120 months work. Game development seems horribly inefficient. By the time AOC has been out 12 months - thats more than 100 man years of work or over 200,000 hours of development work done. Also - I noticed Funcom misrepresented their place on the 2008 PC sales chart. They were actually the 4th best selling game. World of Warcraft beat them twice - with the expansion, and with the game. Which must really suck for other MMO developers - not just Funcom - as Blizzard sold more copies of WOW than AOC or WAR in 2008. It just keeps getting bigger. |

My biggest concern would be the lack of testing of later skills/content if characters / server is being constantly reset - no one can build a town or advance skills far enough to test later skills. |

Where did you find time away from schilling AOC to level characters in WAR? Inquiring minds want to know! |

Can I Run Darkfall Yes Or No And At What Level Of Graphics?
General Discussion « Darkfall 1/26/09 7:59:04 PM
As the poster above me mentioned - there are no requirements out yet. Which is almost unheard of for a game that was originally going to be released a few days ago. |

SWG was a huge success at the time it was released - Not as successful as Everquest or Final Fantasy, but more successful than Ultima, DaoC, Asherons Call. Of course in the 7+ years since it was released the MMO marketplace has grown a lot in terms of numbers of people playing, internet useage, bandwidth available etc.
It sounds to me like you are a sandbox fan. This game doesnt sound to me any more restrictive than any other class/themepark mmo out. And yes they have taken features that have made their Single player RPG's so good - cut scenes, stories, companions. So a heroic MMO - rather than the pleb mmo's we currently have. |

Concerned about group/pvp content of the game

I like the fact they have licensed a lot of the software from experienced companies rather than creating their own engine. |

From memory there is a blue (split into 10 segments) XP bar across the bottom of the U.I (Screen). Hovering your mouse pointer over this should do a popup that says how much XP you have, and how much for the next level. |

So all those Trolls saying there was no way Darkfall would release on the 22nd Jan - were right!!! Who would have thunk. So Aventurine are saying that if there are too many pre-orders they will have to stage release. Reading between the lines - they cant afford additional servers. |

The real question is what those shares were worth in 2001. I have no idea how to check that. |

Heres a link that might help your understanding of the redesign.
So thats around $31 million to buy Destination games (not bad for a 2 million startup without a product) - split 3 ways thats around $10 million each. Plus shares. Korean times article Note: I got those figures from the Korean times otherwise Kinglee wouldnt believe them :) For an interesting read - here is a 2004 article from gamespy From Origin to Destination games |

Beta testers do a number of things - find bugs, find game-play issues, load test servers and game play etc. They also voice an opinion on whether they think the game is ready for release. The company providing the funds determines when the game is released.
Except in both cases - cancel the game or release its not the developers decision on when/if to release but the decision of the company providing the funding. In this case the publisher - NCSoft. I dont blame NCSoft as they already cancelled the game once. Then allowed it to be restarted. Which is more than Sony would do. They would have pushed the original version (Vanguard) out the door. However at the end of the day - money/time ran out and the game went out rather than delaying and incurring further development costs |

Hmmm - perhaps too much of a technology generation gap in your example. AOC is like blue-ray - looks really good - but who can afford the technology required to run it. |

Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning: Best New Game of 2008: Winner
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/13/09 7:34:44 PM
WOW released an expansion - not a new game. We need a most improved Game from a 2008 release so AOC and POTBS can duke it out. |

A book can be its own operation pain in the ass. Especially if its a multi-book saga and each book comes out 12-18 months after the previous. |
