It just depends if there are enough players like me to make a difference for DDO.

There wasnt for Tabula Rasa - look where that ended up.

But are you and your friends the type who will pay to use micro transactions or become paying members if you like the game?

Paying members - unlikely. RMT - especially content most likely if we enjoy the game. We played Guild Wars for 2 years, and bought all the expansions. So thats not really different to buying a group of dungeons to play.

For us - the issue is we get together once a fortnight to game - so a monthly fee MMO is a bit pricey for most (who dont play a MMO outside that) for 8-10 hours a month. Under this model however - if you pay a once off fee for a class, race and a few other bits and pieces its no different to buying Diablo3 to play , or Guild Wars. Then as we play through the game we would pay to unlock different areas to explore.

It depends of course on the price, but this F2P + some $ suits us better for our fortnightly gaming than a full subscription MMO. So as long as we enjoy the game - no reason we wouldnt.

ROFL @ the DDO fans for their refusal to acknowledge the clear reality of the situation.  DDO didn't fail as an MMO because it had the wrong pricing model it failed because it is not a good MMO, period.

Well not having played it I cant comment on whether or not its a good MMO. But not having played it - I can state that for me and the 5 guys I played D&D 2nd ed & Neverwinter nights with - we choose not to play because we had no interest in paying for a game (D&D) we could already play for free online (Neverwinternights).

Having just seen this announcement and as we are looking for something else to play - this game would be right up our alley.

New games here in Aus are $90 - $100, console games are $100 to $110.

At 5 pnds it should be jumping off the shelves, thats less than the cost of a months subscription.

I saw the retail box yesterday for $30 Aus in JB-HiFi in Melbourne. Which is a lot better price than the $90 Aus it was selling for.

I almost picked up a copy at that price :) But I just dont have enough spare time at the moment to play a MMO.

Ncsoft is not the orginal publisher of City of Heroes/Villans. Cryptic created than later sold CoX to NCsoft, and then began working on Marvel MMO which has now become Champions. Cryptic no longer has the rights for CoX as it's now completly owned by NCsoft.

I think you are confused on the difference between developer and publisher. Cryptic developed the COH/COV game which was published by NCSoft. NCSoft later bought the rights to COH/COV and now develops and publishes the game.

Cryptic were working on Marvel MMO which was going to be published by Microsoft. Then Atari acquired Cryptic studios. So Atari are publishing the game.

I'll definitely support the game for several months at least if they do that.

That there is the main problem Tabula Rasa had. MMO's dont survive on churning their entire playerbase every few months. To last as a MMO the game has to keep players entertained for years.

As people here will tell you - I was a big fan of the game, in beta, mod on a fan-site etc. As a casual player I lasted 8 months post release before I hit level cap, got bored and left to play something else.

Dont get me wrong - I had fun playing - but the fun didnt last. I was playing 10 hours a week. For people playing more often the fun ran out sooner.

I completely agree. If they had been honest about their need for both revenue and an extended beta period I think they would have had people lining up outside the door AND general goodwill from the gaming community.

That worked so well for Vanguard /sarcasm So I can see why no-one would do it again.

I'm thinking I'll buy the game in the next few weeks when my trial runs out. Seems like a pretty solid mmo compared to the others on the market. Makes me wonder why they don't have more subscribers.

Well they launched the game unfinished, lots of bugs, lots of CTD, missing content, fired most of the developers in the car parking lot etc.

So I expect most players who live through such a disastrous launch go away and never come back - like AOC.

Fine that you need to play a game to review it - but why would you need to play a game to be able to ask questions about it?

While I haven't played AoC myself, I was certainly very curious as to how something as well received as Age of Conan could tank itself so fast. Not only that, but does the game still have the same problems that dissuaded it's early players?

So I think the interview was fine. He wanted to know what went wrong, and has it been fixed.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/stargate-worlds-developer-sued-over-unpaid-bill

A few things I think you should consider

- EA have experience hosting MMO's, and launching them - WAR launched pretty well.

- Bioware are not inventing their own tech - they have licensed a lot of tech from Simultronics for the game development, and Perpetual for the player management, billing, customer relationship management, game feature extension, load-balancing, lobby servicing, patching and community management.

- Also I think their games have shown a marked improvement from Baldurs Gate to Mass Effect in story telling, and less bugs. I certainly wouldnt be holding a game release 10+ years ago against them. I think they have come a long way since the days of Baldurs Gate.

I havent encountered any problems with Mass Effect.

So I expect the launch to be nothing like your prediction and will be buying the game.

That would make it the first MMO to only offer a English language version. So all those people who dont speak English and want localised versions can all take a jump or cough up the $billion dollars required to translate it into Russian/ Spanish / Chinese etc

Or maybe it would have voice - then the text pop up underneath localised - so a MMO with subtitles.

now clearly LoTRO is doing... hmmm just ok. which means it is not a great success, and since we agree that the franchise is outstanding  that could only mean that its development and production were massive failures.

and i think you misunderstood me when i talked about LoR franchise, i didnt say that LoTRO is bad because its based on a franchise, i said that : IF you give a company a BIG FAT franchise title like LoR (the biggest and fattest) and they make out of it an "ok" game then IT is a failure.

So you are saying LOTRO is a failure because it has a really big franchise but more subs than AOC?

That would make AOC a total disaster as it has a poor franchise and worse subs than LOTRO.

we know that WoW have nowhere to go but down!

Really - how do you know this? WoW added more than a million players last year, and the base game and the expansion were the two best selling PC games for 2008. So both sold more copies than AOC or WAR.

Three of my work colleagues have gone back to playing WoW - after trying AoC and WAR. Prior to the expansion they hadnt played WoW in over a year.

I would say the only MMO title coming out that stands to gather serious numbers is the Bioware - Star Wars mmo. Great company, great franchise.

You forgot fun. Most people dont play games for their potential.

NASA come close to making bug free software. 99.9% error free for the Shuttle software, and it only costs them $35 million a year. Not something that most gaming companies could afford to do though. http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/06/writestuff.html

Nexus has created a great unofficial FAQ over on the official forums. forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php

I supplyed you with 2 reasons I have been given by current investors, only to see people like Shadowmage, curring my post down. I do understand, its very clear from the wording shadowmage is using, that he is on some kind of crusade against Funcom. I cant blame him for not liking Funcom, I dont like them much either. I can blame him for not being serious...

cry me a river. Instead of claiming to be the victim of a crusade, how about posting some links to back up the unfounded assertions you made in your post.

Here I will remind you
Funcom has new things up the sleeve as well. They recently hired a genious game designer (Rasmus Hahr), a bit of a scoop for Funcom, since he is really good.

How about a link to anything this so-called genius developer has done? Again I googled him and the only two entries I could find that mention him - are both from you on this forum. So forgive me if I dont accept your word that some total unknown is a genius.

And the unity engine - Yes its been used on some games. That hardly makes it the best engine. Perhaps you could post some links to articles about the Unity engine that back up your assertion.

And again - you claim Funcom has something up their sleeve as they are using an engine (Unity) which says it must be good because funcom are using it. Thats a circular argument (catch 22). THe one doesnt prove the other.

So no crusade. I read your post, then rather than accepting what a complete stranger posted as the truth - I did some research. Then I debunked your post.

Well I have been reading around about aventurine since I did not buy darkfall ( will regret that for the rest of my life) but will in a few months when I buy a nice laptop to use it on but anyway back on topic I was reading around and all aventurine talks about is how "the games is not for everyone", "Not everyone will get to preoder succesfully", and how they are a small company and don't have alot of money. Well I was wondering what if it HUGE a complete success. Will they expand and open up alot more servers, add more expansion packs? Or will they stay small and still make it so only a selective group will be able to play?
I understand that AV won't read this (on purpose) but might stumble on it accidently and if im lucky they will post on their insight.

LONG LIVE AVENTURINE!!!
LONG LIVE DARKFALL!!!!!

Did you lie about where you live - or is the education system really that bad in the U.S?

And seriously - you are going to regret for the next 50+ years not buying Darkfall the second it was available? Get a grip.

But back on your topic - With all the issues many people seem to be having trying to even play Darkfall its a good thing they kept the release small.

I suggest you stop getting annoyed at people trying to answer your question.

Also you found four analysts that recommend the stock. Big deal - do any of them say why they recommend the stock? The one of your links I checked didnt say why they thought it was a good investment. So perhaps you should be asking them why they think its so good - instead of asking us why we think they are wrong.

The article from Reuters doesnt sound favorable

Shares in Norwegian computer game maker Funcom (FUNCOM.OL) fall 10.4 percent after it takes impairment charges of $22.8 million in the fourth-quarter, mainly to reflect lower revenues than anticipated from the online computer game 'Age of Conan'.

Analyst Fredrik Thoresen at DnB NOR Markets says comments from Funcom suggest interest in the game is levelling off.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/hotStocksNews/idUKLN44961520090223?sp=true

Or try this one
http://www.digitallook.com/companyresearch/1204559/Funcom/share_prices.html

They could only find two brokers who would comment on the stock - and both are neutral.

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/othercities/triangle/stories/2009/02/23/daily20.html which says they lost 58cents for every share issued in the 4th qtr, their Chief Finance Officer left etc. Sound real promising.

http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q/ao?s=FUNCOM.OL yet another link that shows no brokers recommending buying this stock.

So perhaps its a bit of a national pride thing.

Funcom has new things up the sleeve as well. They recently hired a genious game designer (Rasmus Hahr), a bit of a scoop for Funcom, since he is really good. He is working on the comng mmo title The Secret World, so that game does have a chance.

They are also working on several casual MMO's, which actually is a much much bigger market, than the quality client MMO market is. They chose to use the Unity engine for this, which is a huge scoop, since thats probably the best engine out there right now for casual MMO's and a very fast one to develop in, meaning they just might be ready  to launch their next mmo already in 2009.

Those two things, would get an investor hopeful, the hiring of Rasmus and the use of the right developing tool, Unity, making them able to launch something in 2009.

Wow - just wow. Can I have what you are smoking.

Now I dont claim to know everyone who is anyone in game development, so I googled your genius developer. The highest rated (and only link) for this genius - is the very thread I am posting in.

As for your claim that they scooped the best engine out there - Unity's claim to fame for being a great engine is that Funcom are using it.

When Funcom, makers of Anarchy Online and Age of Conan, decide to use Unity for their upcoming browser based MMO project, you know it has to be good.

Thats a catch 22. Funcom must be in a good position as they are using the best engine - which is the best engine because funcom are using it!

Darn - why wont my stockbroker answer the phone - I want to sell my house and buy funcom shares. It must be a great investment since the 4 leading stock broking companies in the world say its a great buy. /sarcasm
