SWTOR got 9s and 10s from every staff writer except one, who then got fired for giving it a low score.

I don't expect anything new or interesting to come from people who made WoW.

Correction: Danny got let go because he was posting his articles across other sites and forums, before they were published here.  If we really cared about his score, the article in question would be gone.

As to why this many articles: it's a major embargo drop. We do this for all big games that let us go nuts on coverage.

As for "paying the bills": it looks to me like Perfect World is today, judging by the site skin.  But I really wouldn't know, because the only people who do anything with ads are the site owners.  Editorial and Community just do our own thing, though you may not believe it.

I remember when people used to be excited for new mmos.  I can't imagine how tiring it must be to have to explain yourself to the bitter/jaded vocal minority.  I just wanted to say that I'm personally looking forward to Wildstar (more then any other mmo tbh).  So, thank you for taking the time to post all this information.

I'm sure there's nearly an endless list of the ways SWToR could be 'better'. For instance, I would have been much happier if the quest content for each class was almost exclusively the class content rather than a little class content and a bunch of derivative world quests. I imagine that would have been costly though, and probably would have resulted in fewer classes. I would have been OK with that, but there's nothing that says anyone other than me would have been OK with that. :-)

Personally, I think what really killed the game for me is the combat.  Its basically WoW, just like Rift.  If SWTOR came out with the same combat system as Tera, or at the least GW2.  I honestly believe it would of done a lot better.  What we got was a decent mmo with great stories and voice acting.  Everything else was copy/paste.  Just my .02c

I cant be the only one who finds the whole MMO meets Pixar Movie Lore of this game appealing?

I really don't understand what you mean by "Pixar movie lore".  The game has a children's story like South park is a cartoon for kids.  Don't judge the game on just its art style.  It is the most polished mmo since WoW.  The story is very good and doesn't ever feel childish.

Didn't really get into KOTOR, thought the combat was clunky. Could you pause in combat to use skills? Or am I thinking Mass Effect.

Yes, you could.  I would say it is more like Dragon Age: Origins combat then Mass Effect.

I don't think the Wildstar team is listening or very smart and here is why.

Yes they are making what "appears to be an ok game, nobody knows for sure, unless having tested it already.

Here is the thing though,i am quite sure MANY adults would feel out of place in a game that looks like a little kid hangout, the graphics alone can ruin that part of the immersion for older gamer's and no not all, before anyone starts down that road.

I do however believe that younger kids would not feel out of  place if playing a more natural looking game also with better textures. So their team imo can't be that dumb to cater to a LESSER crowd, this is why i believe it is totally for the purpose of making a cheaper less costly to make and run game,it has NOTHING to do with art style or anything else like that. Here is another thing,if that excuse was the sole premise there is nothing stopping a dev team from delivering a separate texture pack UT99 did it 14 years ago.

Really the media instead of kissing their ass to get advertising money should address the question and ask them WHY?Even the cartoon look doesn't cut it when you are using amateur looking textures,PIXAR would roll in their grave if they saw how WS is delivering textures and colour.

To prove it really does matter enough ,i would personally play this game for certain but as is ,no way could i support a slack effort for visuals when i am playing a 3D visual "video" game.Have we even heard ANYONE address the WS team about their graphics,i don't remember seeing anyone delve deep into it with questions.

You really need to learn to speak for yourself and only yourself.  I'm an adult and I love the art style.  People like you probably think South Park is for kids because its a cartoon.

Here is probably a better example:

When the Walking Dead launched, the major networks saw it as nothing. Their research did suggest that type of show had an audience. Then the show grew and grew. They tried to say it was a passing fad and that it wouldn't last. It grew and grew and continues to grow. They actually had a couple execs from other major networks say they were confused as to why this show was working because their research said that a show had to 1) have a major star in it and 2) needed to be a procedural such as a cop drama/comedy. They put so much faith into their market research that even when something is doing well because it directly went for a side audience that producers weren't sure how big it was, that they can't wrap their head around it.

The market research isn't completely wrong. A detective show is the most desired show in the US currently. The problem is that there are at least 12 of them. If there was only 1 detective show it would by far and large be the most watched show on television. But with it spread out over so many (some competing on the same night or same time slots) they are all brought down. There are still successful ones for sure. But new ones will of course struggle because it is so flooded (like theme park MMOs).

For TV there are at least some people who realize this. AMC network came out of nowhere by targeting the audiences no one else was with shows like Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad. Netflix nailed some immediate home runs by making shows such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black instead of going with a cop, lawyer, or other over done category. A few years ago Hollywood would have laughed off most of these ideas. But people realizing that when you have a global population of over 7 billion and a US population of over 330 million means that niche is actually quite large, has changed the game. HBO is of course another great example.

This is where the MMO industry (and kind of all gaming) hasn't caught up yet. Yes, if you took all of the MMO gamers and did a detailed poll on what they want, a quicker, easier, more casual, theme park MMO would be hands down the top of the charts. The problem is there there are a TON of those all trying to get a piece of that market which makes MOST of them do poorly. Breaking out of that mold and targeting some of the side groups where there is little to no competition currently is actually the far smarter solution. However, game companies are stuck in copy the leader mode and are hurting themselves.

Sorry to shit in your cereal, but The Walking Dead is a very overrated show.  Its a Zombie soap opera.  Nothing new here, move along sir.

MMO's now a days are sucking. DAoC was my favorite game until they decided to go the expansion push with ToA and Catacombs. WoW was good until WotLK. Now I am looking for something to satisfy me. Then I came across this,  Pathfinder Online ( https://goblinworks.com/ ). It's a sandbox MMO in developement and you get to put your input into the making. Read the blog, come to your own conclusions.

Just because you are jaded and think all mmos "suck", doesn't mean it's a fact.  MMOs have evolved into someting different then they were 10 years ago+  This might not be what you wanted,  but mmos are more popular today then they ever were before.  I'm guessing that's because they have gotten a lot better.

I have a similar issue as this guy. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/400930/Anyone-else-not-excited-for-any-MMO.html

I've written about my favorite MMO Asheron's Call here: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/18/view/forums/post/6090689/thread/367166#6090689

I'm 25 years old. I've been playing MMORPG's since 1996. I grew up playing online games like EQ, Asheron's Call, DAoC, The Realm, indie games like Well of Souls... ARPG's like Diablo II, and LoD.

I have been trying to pin point the problem for over a year now. I think there is three major problems 1) Myself: MMO's and Online RPG's have become somewhat 'I've done this before feeling. 2) The games are now designed to sell boxes, and pressured by developers and not build to be a long term game (6 months+) 3) Games are no longer being designed uniquely and are instead sticking with already done content and methods AKA 'Cloning' ideas.

I think a vast majority of LONG time MMO players or 'older school' people are not as happy with the games, and I think we get upset time after time because we just haven't gotten used to the fact that MMO's are not being designed to have content and continue to be played for 6+ months on average, or atleast it appears. They want their box sales, play for a couple months til you burn out, and come back for a 40$ expansion a year later.

Our hardware has evolved, 10 years ago we had huge open worlds, non-instanced dungeons, open world active PvP, dynamic crafting, player housing, housing decoration, weapon crafting, exploration, giant 100 of miles wide continents, and yet.. Here we are 2013.. Games have shrunken map wise, they have become linear, there is less exploration than ever. And any game that capures some type of mind blowing level of one category seems to be severely lacking in the others.

I've made some of the best friends of my life and has some of my best memories playing MMO's. People I've kept in touch with for 5-10+ years, text, facebook, etc. all through MMO's. I've been able to escape sports, work, life and relax in a movie that I write my own plot to.

Games aren't being made for gamers by gamers anymore. Like everything in the world it is all about the dollar now. There is only two quality games right now I enjoy.. Path of Exile, and League of Legends, both companies give a completely free good product and make money off non-pay to win stuff. I despised Guild Wars 2, I despised how easy and dumbed now World of Warcraft has become, and these linear worlds I keep seeing. WHY CAN'T I GO OVER THE MOUNTAIN? WHY CAN'T I STUMBLE ACROSS SOME RANDOM DUNGEON NONE OF MY FRIENDS HAVE VENTURED OUT FAR ENOUGH TO SEE. Why can't I find 'my own hidden' hunting spots. Why are we getting smaller? easier? slower? less skills? less housing, creativity modification, than we did in 2005?

I am speaking in generalities, but facts show other than World of Warcraft there isn't really any game that maintains a majority of subs or even remotely close after release. There also hasnt been any games lately that gains even more traction 3-4 months after. They all lose and lose big 3-4 months in.

Some games I'm seeing are absolutely atrocious. I mean yes, the graphics are nice but when you compare the content / game size to an EQ, AC, or something its like, they took 10% of a true MMO and then put a shiny wrapper on it and charged 29.99 for it. I just feel like the market has been flooded with money grabs and the genre is not being pushed to the limit.

I'm not excited for EQNext because its not even remotely 'EQ' its a EQ story line with a completely different game many came to know and wanted. Maybe it will be good? Or maybe it will be the same as everything else. I just don't see anything changing on the horizon and I'm tired of coming home and being disappointed.

Time to go straight console gaming I guess.

Its really an easy answer for you OP.  You are burned out.  You have been playing mmos and orpg's since 1996 as you said.  Maybe, its time for something new?  Or at the very least, play some other games till you see an mmo that gives you that excited feeling again.  I quit playing WoW about the time Icecrown content released in Wotlk.  I tried a few mmos afterwards, but I also starting getting more games on steam (single player etc).  I had a blast with gaming again.  Then about a year or so ago I started playing mmos again.  Having fun, and very much looking forward to Wildstar.

I'm with you.  I never really enjoyed skyrim or oblivion.  They just felt like really boring single player mmos *shrug.

WoW is a terrible choice for a kid. Not because of the content of the game, but simply look at trade or general chat in any major city.  Kids should not be reading the hateful, racist, prejudice crap trolls type in those channels.  My .02 c

A lock box drops from killing mobs about once every 3 or 4 minutes to the point of stacks upon stacks. You can earn maybe 20k astral diamonds a day at 60 they expect you to spend lots of cash and nickle and dime the living hell out of you for just about everything in game . Even the new enchantment system costs astral diamonds for each fuse. Great dungeon crawler game made by a okay company but their parent company perfect world is doing every thing they can do make sure no one wants to keep playing it with all the price gouging in game.

Couldn't of said ti better myself.  I was stupid enough to pick up the $60 founder pack.  While its one of the better packs (having a tier 3 (purple) mount and companion on every new toon I create is nice.  But, the game could of been pretty decent.  The cash shop is such a turn off.  If they cut those prices like 60%, I promise they would make double profit compared to now.  I went back yesterday to try out the Ranger.  While it was pretty fun (not as much fun as my rogue).  I truthfully can't convince myself to play thru the same quests again.  Especially when You get your standard bag and 2 small bags from quests.  Leaving 2 bag slots empty unless you buy them from the cash shop.  If you like the combat system.  I recommend going to Tera.  The combat system is better there and the F2P system is actually pretty fair.

And Astral diamonds, what a crook of shit.  Oh, and the gold you make in game is basically for "kits" and repairs.  The auction house doesn't even take the in game currency.  Only the cash shop Astral diamonds.

Last thing.  I only noticed today that Neverwinter is now on Steam.  They also have a "steam exclusive" starter pack for $20.  You get a bunch of worthless items and a black panther companion.  You know, like the one people paid $200 (Hero of the North) to get.

This game just gets better and better the more I read about it.  I really hope it launches in spring 2014 like they hope.  If it gets pushed back, I will understand if it makes it a better game.  But, damn I can not wait.
Tera is a great game with a really unique and fun combat system.  It also has one of the best F2P systems (like Rift).

Lol, best comment of this thread so far.  Well played sir.

If you find one, let me know.  I'll gladly share the same info if I find one first.

You also realize how much work goes into changing over to F2P right? As well as why companies do not like to make such a switch, and that the design early on is based on what type of model they plan to use?

Oh I also love that I'm the Herring here, I mean come on man..

Not the herring yet you pose questions in a reply that already has the answer and then top it off with meaningless comments like companies don't like to do it just as a distraction.

Wow man you're really reaching here, what I said was a direct refute to what you propose, as image is just as important to profits. You didn't answer it at all with your statement you just laid out a strawman and expect it to explain away all.

Yes, I am clearly reaching for pointing out that you quoted me saying something and then asked a question which is already answered in it.

But I do thank you for once again completely ignoring parts of the post to continue to focus on your continual use of herrings. Perhaps this time you will state that the President of the United States enjoyes P2P to refute what started this discussion, that B2P and F2P works just as much as P2P to fund a game.

Its really funny how you say his ignoring parts of your pointless replies.  Yet, here you are again completely missing his point and just continuing to argue just to argue.  People like you make online gaming a terrible place sometimes.

There was a leak about the classes.  There were no official releases of information.  You have your info wrong.
