Yeah I agree, I was little put off by how easy the event appeared to be.  The dragon basically just sat there and sent enemies out and you could hit him from afar with no threat of him coming after you.
That said, this WAS just a demo, so maybe they toned him down.  Hopefully he will be a bit more challenging in the real game!

This is my biggest fear, that the whole bloody game will be too easy. I would still play it for the FPS like PvP matches, no subs, and the WvWvW.

The PvE though...I like PvE sometimes you know? It's fun, but it needs to be challenging. I'm just concerned how you balance a game where you've removed such a staple like the holy trinity.

If you try to balance a game where 5 Thieves, or 3 Elementalists and 2 Engineers, or whatever combination can succeed. How easy does the game become when the ingenious playerbase figures out the "best" party makeup. (You know it will happen).

I think this is a big problem for them, but I'm excited to see what Anet comes up with.

3rd person cover is also my favorite combat type. Gears of War is probably my favorite game over the last few years. I didn't realize Mass Effect used that system. I may have to check it out now. Thanks!

The only FPS I really ever liked was TF2, and maybe Portal, but that's kind of different.

ANET's been winning a lot of awards (and PvP matches) lately. I hope all of this success doesn't go to their heads.

;)

The most obvious answer - both - is not allowed.

I totallee agree with this...

Seems like making a good poll isnt that simple after all

On top of that though, how many people interested in playing aren't exactly Star Wars fans, and aren't exactly MMO fans,  but are just BioWare fans?

If you mostly chose SWTOR because you're a fan of previous Bioware games, then that is just option 3.

I think you would be surprised at how many anti-MMO people are going to try the game because SWToR is made by Bioware. I know of at least two, who pretty much dislike MMOs but will try out SWToR because of the Bioware name.

Yeah, I wish I would have thought to put that in the original poll. I have to say, I never played Mass Effect, but I did play Dragon Age: Origins, and was surprised I didn't care for it that much. That's probably blasphemy around here, but I was as surprised as anyone.

On an unrelated note, I also didn't like Bioshock which was hugely popular, so maybe it's just me. ;)

But again, I was simply looking for the primary motivator between the two options. If you had to pick one, do you SWTOR because you love Star Wars? Or do you SWTOR because of the new various things it brings to the genre?

...All kinds of reasons where the prime motivator doesn't have to be 'new various things an MMORPG brings to the genre'...

I'm having some difficulty summarizing this section of your reply which is why so much confusion I think. I can try to clarify my thoughts:

  • Star Wars is a huge IP and has tons of fans
  • MMO's are a large genre with lots of fans
  • These are two separate audiences with some overlap

Of the people on this site, some are Star Wars fans, and some are not Star Wars fans. I would say most everyone here likes MMORPG's though.

I was just trying to get an idea of how many people were into SWTOR mostly because it was set in a universe they love. I was trying to contrast that with how many were just plain ole MMO fans, not really into Star Wars at all, but otherwise liking the game for what it is.

Thanks for the inputs on making the poll more clear though.

Bioware is my main reason for wanting to play this game. Followed by MMO then SW. If this was a ME MMO or DA:O MMO, I would be just as excited. So it is BW more than SW, but the MMO is still very important. There is just so much more to a MMO than a SPG. So MMO first for me, but there is just more than that simple answer on the poll.

Wow, that's a good answer. I didn't think of making the developers an option. Makes a ton of sense though, that's pretty much why I started looking at GW2 as well.

I apologize for any confusing wording, but I've tried to keep the poll simplistic on purpose.
I agree with those of you saying that the choice of MMO can involve any number of reasons. I also understand this poll doesn't offer a comprehensive selection of all of those reasons.
But again, I was simply looking for the primary motivator between the two options. If you had to pick one, do you SWTOR because you love Star Wars? Or do you SWTOR because of the new various things it brings to the genre?

Not accusing you personally but from my experience on this site I've learned not to vote in polls that are as vague as yours more often than not they are done so that the op can try to pigeon hole people into some type of box that they don't see themselves in.  I can't speak for everyone else here but that is the reason I'm uncomfortable voting on something forcing me to vote on something I don't see myself (being one factor being more important than the other).
And do you really think that there are many fans of TOR that haven't played mmorpg's before????That may be the poll you should have made simply will TOR be your first mmorpg.

Clearly you are free to not vote on this poll.

The poll was just based on a question I had floating in my head this morning at work. I'm also bored, and it's Monday, and I thought I'd create some conversation.

My intention is not to make anyone uncomfortable, or...pigeon-hole you in any way.

I apologize for any confusing wording, but I've tried to keep the poll simplistic on purpose.

Incomplete poll......As an mmo players who's favorite setting happens to be Star Wars I don't feel like there was anything I could vote on in that poll.

His poll isn't asking which you are a fan of, but which you are more a fan of.

Yep, this in a nutshell.

As the first poster pointed out, "both" is the obvious answer. I left it out on purpose. You are all reading this poll on a SWTOR forum on an MMO website after all.

I was trying to get you guys to pick which option MOST drove you to decide on SWTOR.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Guild Wars 2 fanboi, and I'm not all that interested in Star Wars: The Old Republic. However, don't let that stop you from voting. I'm just curious as to where fans of SWTOR are coming from.

The poll is trying to see if fans of SWTOR are first and foremost fans of the Star Wars universe, and are excited that SWTOR brings that world to life, or if they are fans of MMO's in general, and simply think SWTOR is the next evolution in the industry. \

What do you think?

Haha +1

I'm most concerned that the PvE will be too easy. Maybe not such a big deal since I do more PvP anyway, but if I hit a dungeon, I'm there for a challenge.

They (Anet) have a lot on their plates trying to balance combat so that ANY group composition can run it. I'm afraid that flexibility might make the PvE too easy.

This game will be big for the same reasons WoW was such a success.

1) It's an evolution over previous games in the genre.
They've borrowed Public Quests from Warhammer, but made them better. They've taken 3 faction PvP from DaoC. They've borrowed personal story from Bioware. They've taken the best ideas from previous RPG's and brought them together.

2) It'll appeal to a broader audience.
The structured PvP is more like an FPS than traditional MMO PvP. TF2 players will give it a shot. The lack of a sub will appeal to console gamers. Removing mana, adding destructible environments, and introducing dodging make it feel more like an action game than an RPG. This casts the net even further.

3) It'll be finished.
This game looks better, and has more content right now, than some games had at launch. The press isn't easily fooled anymore, and while GW2 probably won't be perfect at launch, it won't drive people away for lack of polish either.

The debate over which MMO is going to be the next biggest won't stop until the games have launched, but my money is on GW2. It's doing too many things right, and word of mouth spreads fast.

What do you think honestly of the trebuchets in Battle of Khylo?

i like the -idea- of them, but I feel like it's a zero sum game. You give up a player to use the trebuchets, and so does the opposing team to offset it.

The entire match now moves more slowly since you have less men, and also fighting to destroy a trebuchet is time spent not capturing points.

Eventually once the newness wears off, players will want to be winning these games as fast and efficiently as possible. I think eventually there will be just an unwritten agreement NOT to use the trebs as it just slows the match down.

In that way, I see them as kind of gimmicky. How do they work in person?

Only problem with this game is that they are taking to damn long.

Over 6 years now. And from what everyone said (on gamescom) the game allready looks more polished than most games in their post release stage.

I have feeling the game will not be out before spring 2012 , and maybe even later.

But most people are so pumped about the game, for over 2 years now.

Its starts to turn into annoyance.

I seriously dont know what are they waiting for...

.....when it's ready.

But it does look polished. I agree on that part.

I hope they do not rush it out. I'd rather play a more polished game than one with more bugs. :)

$this.

Don't whine about the length of time.

You only get one shot at a launch. The same "loyal" fans who want the game to launch soonest, are the ones who cry loudest when it's not perfect.

This could be a very good game. Maybe one of the best in the last decade. Give them time to finish it, even if it means 2013. I've seen plenty of games launch early to spectacular failure, but only a few took too long. (Duke Nukem Forever)

Oh sorry then. I just saw the date was from couple days ago.

I'm getting pretty hyped for this game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb42Kpnhpy4

The combat definitely looks boring.

It could be a great game for PvE and RP'ers though, especially for those that like the franchise. Bioware will do the story justice I think, and if that's your thing, then maybe the combat isn't so important.

GW2 looks better though, IMO.

I actually disagree with the sentiment in this thread. In 15 years, I bet graphics are NOT that different. I don't think games in 2025 will make games today look like Mario.

I think a graph of graphics quality would look like a bell curve, and we are now on the side seeing the diminishing returns. How much more real can these games get visually?

The last thirty years has been the age of graphics and realism - squeezing every inch we can out of our computers in search for a more realistic visual experience, to bring us more immersion.

We are now there. The decades ahead will be about Human Computer Interaction. The Wii, and Kinect are just the begining.

Game looks great so far! I have concerns whether they will be able to sustain the same pace felt in the first few levels of the demo though.

Also hoping the game won't be too easy? Warhammer's Public Quest bosses felt a little vanilla. Fairly easy, and handily defeated by the zerg. Would love to see some Event bosses that required some thought and tactics to bring down.
