Here is the article:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/03/08/behind-the-scenes-of-star-wars-the-old-republic-throwing-people-at-the-problem/

It just sound like one big mad rush to get the game completed in time, and they hired more people to get it done. In the end it was not just a Bioware game, but Bioware and friends, with "friends" being graduates from development schools, who no doubt were clueless about what was really wanted, with them coming in late, and there was no more solid bond with everyone, that there was with past Bioware games. Bioware would not have afforded to employ those graduates, but EA did.

"Too many cooks spoil the broth" come to mind here

During the last six months of development, the team began a difficult triage process; where features that weren’t going to make it for launch were cut. All development heads were summoned to daily meetings at what Dallas dubbed ‘The Death Star’ – with each team being coached on what to cut, and what to keep. “Some developers cried,” explained Dallas. “I didn’t enjoy that.”

Seems to me you missread.

The game was rushed not because they had not enought time (6 years: started in Dec, 2005) nor enought buget (200ish millions, ie 3+ times Rift Budget) , nor enough people (800 people vs 200ish for other MMO).

It was rushed out of the door because they didn't know how to properly manage such a budget and such a big project.

It was rushed because they wasted 5 years not even having a polished game after that time and that's why EA allowed them one more year to finish the game, which was extended to december (awful launch date) vs october

That is how Bioware rolled, in the past - they take their time creating gaming masterpieces, but EA rushed them. Bioware no longer had the luxury of taking their time with this

They could not manage it well, because EA was breathing down their necks

Others MMO have roundly 4 years, $50ish millions, 200 ish persons

6 years, $200 millions, 800 persons is a luxury.

And contrary to what you are stating EA gave free reign on the development of the game till the last year when they realized BioWare was nowhere to be ready to have any progress made.

You seriously think that Bioware managed to create awesom games for years, and now of all a sudden they have EA to work with, that Bioware alone are really awful developers and that pre-EA, all their awesome games were just flukes?

To be fair BG was nice and Kotor too but:

Planescape torment, made without BioWare was way better than BG and it was made by BlackIsle.

Kotor was fine but Kotor II was even better, story and game play wise, even if you consider it was rushed out of the door by LA with half finished story. Now for Kotor, everyones agrees on the story was nice and the combat just fair.

In terms of RP, The Witcher is way better than all BioWare story and game play as Risen is better too.

So BioWare indeed made nice story but not that great games and not even the best story.

I'm not saying they are bad, they are nice but not top notch.

Back to TOR story wise most of TOR scripts are bland, cliche and unappealing.

I think Bioware (rip) got it's almost legendary status thanks to Baldurs Gate 2.

just like blizzard has with Diablo 2 and Valve with Halff life.

And the fact old farts like to give those games more credit then they probably deserve.

No shit :)

To me it was evident after reading about  Dragon age 2 and SWTOR.

Especially since EA put the Bioware name on several other of their studios.

"Nice" to see my gut feeling was right. That's another studio raped by EA. (still haven't forgiven them for Westwood!!)

It's not illegal..that's what this whole thread is about.

I too feel there is missing something to work towards. I wish we didn't unlock all weapon skills at level 10 (or whatever)

The only thing to look forward now is... eh I don't know actually.

Ohyeah gold to buy armor and dyes and stuff.

I don't remember there being a scamming tab but whatever. I and many others (probably) weren't sure under which tab to report it. (spamming, botting?) It is smart they made a seperate gold seller tab.

I don't get this talk about "leveling" at all. What's the point in gaining levels, shouldn't you just play and enjoy the game?

If anything, I'm leveling to fast. Before I have explored an area I already am high enough level to go to another area.

I'm a level 56 Ranger.

Untill level 40 or so I only saw three different coats. Then I got some nice drops and some rewards for personal story. Then a friend crafter showed me some coats he could make for me.

Then I bought some low level coats at the Trade Post, just to check them out (few copper each) and saw I missed at least a few while leveling up. (because they didn't drop for me)

I now already saw at least ten different coats. I think there are many more. The problem right now is there is no preview function in the Trade Post. So you can't go check out all the different armor styles. (they are working on it though)

Edit

http://donoftheslum.minus.com/mzXq5s3Le

Wow, cool link. Guess I was right, there are many more.

I spend €10. But in retrospect it wasn't needed, I make enoug gold to buy my gems.

There isn't anything I want to buy anyway except bank space.

Agreed. I checked the Wiki but first off all it's hard to memorize which combo you can pull of which works for what other class.

And it probably only works with a group of peopel who worked with each other before, use teamspeak etc.

So, I tried to find combos I could pull of myself on my own. I only found one so far. (use it all the time, it is ace)

It is what you make of it.

I made more friends, talked to a lot more other people and grouped wih more people then I did in the four weeks I played WOW.

Plus every time there is an event you are working together with other people, even when you don't speak  there is a group buzz goin on. People rezzing each other, doing combo's, asking for help in chat.

It is a perfect sytem for me. Although I can see how peopel used to guilds and doing raids, using teamspeak, etc. would think otherwise.

I love how you don't HAVE to group, except dungeons. (which I still haven't done, it's hard to commit for hours for me)

I also think a lot of people are real loners, ten people around a skill point and no one can be bothered to say hi orr answer a question. But I quess that's more the people's fault then the game.

Not surprising since they only sold 200.000 copies (first month or so).

My advise is to find another game. (I myself am enjoying Guild Wars 2 very much atm.)

My experience was the same. I only did a dungeon once and din't even finished it. Even played with guild members.

The problem I had was I could not pull just one enemy, attack one and they all come.

But, I can't really judge the dungeons because I do not know enough of this game and it's mechanics yet. Which brings me to my point; this game needs more tutorial. I mean, how many players know about combo's?

In my opinion there are to many mobs and they spawn to fast. Plus it takes to long to kill a mob as well.

This is a bit annoying if you are an explorer and want to check out every nook and cranny on the map. It is also responsibly for the fact I often outlevel an area before I explored it all (And I do not craft and PVP)

- There are other things to discover besides DE's by the way. Hidden caves, hidden chests, hidden puzzles, hidden mini story, hidden enemy. A lot of these hidden things come without bonus loot, a design choice apparently, perhaps to stop people farming them. -

That being said: Are you the same level as your mobs?

If you are lower then the mobs,  this issue will be much worse. You could try the opposite and explore lower level areas's. If you want to get more XP (I wouldn't if I were you) this is also a good method to gain XP because you will kill many more mobs in the same time.

Plus, you could do the personal story to get XP if you would need so. It is REALLY bad at the begining but once you join an order it get's a lot better. (at least priory does, haven't played others)

These responses are getting old "don't like it F**k off" i mean the man spent his money and should be able to voice his problems with the product.

not really. All this was well know before release. There is no carrot in GW2. You play to have fun. That's it.

And I am enjoying my pants off. I got already more hours in GW2 then Skyrim and Fallout 3 combined!!

I do believe towns can stay captured though. If no one triggers the event to recapture it. Not sure.

There are a lot of people running around so events never fail and get triggered every 5 minutes.

I got every class to level 20... Deleted 3 of them just to try the others and sadly I really can't get into any of them. The game system is sweet, I love how it's sort of like a sandbox and you can do whatever you want, but there are a few things that are major gamebreakers for me.

1.) Classes.... Like I said, I can't get into any of them... 5 skills and 5 utilities are not that fun to me.

5 skills X amount of weapons. Plus you get more utility skills later on. I still think we need more weapon skills though, you're stuck after level 10 or so with the same weapon skills for ever.

2.) Loot.... Very bland loot.... I kind of choose a stat and go with it... Or mix and match... I searched for level 80 gear, loot has more stats but still more of the same. The loot is very boring and not meaningful.

Yeah, I'm not impressed with the loot either. Oh look, this has some higher numbers then my other weapon let's use this. A lot of the time I get loot below my level anyway, so it's vendor junk.

3.) Level scaling.... You decrease in level in areas... It makes me take more damage and if I want to AoE 5 monsters in a lower area, I can't because it decreases my level. And when you need a TON of crafting material to level, it's frustrating.

I fricking love the level scaling. I wish it was even more difficult in low level areas. I do not craft and I do not understand why anyone is interested in leveling. In fact, I wish I could make leveling go slower.

4.) WvW wasn't interesting at all... You get spammed by 15 players and there is nothing you can do. And when there is an actual objective, we literally auto-attack a door for 15 minutes+...

I tried it, didn't understand any of it. Needs a tutorial.

5.) Battlegrounds, never liked WoW BG's and this is the same thing.

I will probably not play this.

Overall, GW2 has a great system in place, the auction house from your inventory was a huge plus for me.... But there are too many turn offs for me to actually stay with it. The plus side is that it's free and I can't come back when it's updated a bit. Maybe it will change....

Back to being gameless =-(    (Pre-ordered borderlands 2, but thats not an MMO.... SEEKING A GOOD MMORPG!)

I fricking love this game. Exploring maps, finding events, even the personal story get's good once you join an order (level 31 or so) Crafting sucks and I do not know about the PVP.

I don't know if this is a "real" mmorpg which will let me play for months, probably not. But since it is just as expensive as a single player game I can judge it like one. I already played this more then Fallout: New Vegas, my favorite single player game.

Depends what we get with the expansion and how much it will cost.

I haven't played GW1, perhaps someone could fill me/us in what we can expect.

Anyway, I played for 95 hours already and only discovered 13% of the map so there's no rush :)

I hope everyone enjoys their participation trophy.

If what the OP says is true, it's everything that is wrong with MMO's today and defending it is weak weak sauce. This is nothing short of .... insert anti-pc correct words. This isn't gaming, it's becoming movie like. Call a spade a spade.

Eh..You do realize he is talking about the personal story right?

Which is just an instanced single player bonus feature..

The personal story bit of the game is pretty bad. I didn't even bother at first and catched up from level 12 to 31. If you think Bethesda writing is bad... they are gods compared to this dribble.

The real pve is out in the world, exploring, finding and doing events. And some hearts, skill points and vistas along the way.

The personal story is a little meh, but I still enjoy it. Its classic fantasy.

You know, I am now doing the priory order story and it get's a whole lot better. No more running around doing stupid stuff.  Also , at least so far, no more stupid choices for which you only have half the information. (my biggest complaint about the story)

and the dialogue is hilarious. I really like my mentor priestess sienna or whatever and the head of the order calling her names. Brilliant cheesy dialogue ftw.

I could never understand why so many people create human characters in fantasy games. Isn't that boring since we are all human all the time in RL?

EDIT: And Norn are pretty much big humans.  I love my Charr. Except they can be annoying on jumping puzzles and I imagine an Asura would give better vision for that.

Regarding profession, my first toon was a warrior just because I like directly smashing stuff. And the armor looked the coolest to me in character selection, so that is probably a common perception since so many people made warriors.

I like to conenct with my character, lime it is me running around there. That's a bit easier when you choose a human character. That is also the reason most protagonist in games are a white man.
