Granted there's 2-3 from this list I enjoyed, but they're all virtually the same thing cover-to-cover. Archeage on the other hand may have similar aspects to previous MMO's, but at least it's trying to venture away from the poor standard, in my opinion, that WoW set in place when it caught the horde of newbies that began venturing into the MMO world. The majority of WoW players, and new MMO'ers, are the new hippies of the world today. They want it easy. Anything that proposes a challenge and requires effort is met with criticism and QQ's. Elder Scrolls is a prime example of what's happening to all games (especially mmo's) today. Watch this video and tell me my arguement isn't true. Elder Scrolls: The Dumbing Down

Opposed and incompatible informations about archeage situation regarding pvp
General Discussion « ArcheAge 3/04/13 5:57:39 PM
I played UO for 5+ years. I loved the PvP and full loot system before they carebeared it and added Trammel. I didn't make a PKer until this happened. Next I played Final Fantasy XI for 5+ years. Aside from pointless Ballista, which I never participated in, there was no real PvP. It was strictly a PvE game. That being the game, saying that all hardcore PvPers are griefers who like to stroke their epeen is false. If that was the case I'd never have played Final Fantasy XI that long. I personally like all aspect of an MMO from fishing and decorating my house for hours to killing a miner by the mountain, stealing his home rune and key, recalling to his house, and robbing him blind. The problem is Non-PKers usually have a tendency to panic and scatter caring only for their own safety making them easy pickings. PKers, in my experience, aren't like this. They'll protect each other to increase their chances of survival which is why they travel in groups. Besides, Non-PKers far outnumber PKers. If you group up and play smart PKers won't have a chance. However if you want to be solo and anti-social....that's your own fault for getting gang-banged. Make friends...caring is sharing. Besides, when I went rifting on Aion I jumped plenty of people and did a 1 v 2+. Even when a rifting party came to our area I attacked them and did a 6x47+ v 1x50. AoE knockdown. Kill healer, kill sorcerer, kill ranger, kill assassin, kill gladiator....templar. ; ; I may have outleveled them but they had the numbers and setup to easily take me down. Downfall....panicing.
That's why they have jail in this game. In UO if you died as a PKer you lost 5% or 10% of all your skills meaning you had to retrain yourself otherwise you're at a big disadvantage. If I understand the penalty in Archeage correctly from what I read....I like their system better. Jail. From what I read/heard if you get thrown in jail as a pirate you can get up to 72 hours jail time. 3 days "real time". Sure, you can "escape," but I also read/heard that even in doing this you cannot use your skills (combat) for those 3 days. And it's an in-game counter so you can't just log off and wait for it to go away. So, this "pirate" is out for 3 days. I'd need someone else to confirm all this as a fact though. I'm personally not going to make a Pirate, but I am looking forward to that patch I heard on Bounties. Hopefully it'll have some sort of system to help players "track" these bounties when they're online. Of course in my mind I've never been able to get around the "flaw" of bounties like they had in UO. What's to prevent a "friend" from collecting this bounty from that player? The only way I see it having any affect is if there is some "harsh" punishment for being caught with a bounty that'll deter people from just having a friend collect it and split the gold.
I don't mind the idea of a safe zone so much. As much as I'd like open world entirely I agree restrictions are sometimes a necessary evil. However, one thing I disagree about with the safe zones is that I heard people could "sail/run" into a safe zone and they're now untouchable. I hate that. If a player leaves the safe zone and engages in combat the opposing party should be able to continue their assault even if they return to a safe zone since they're still engaged in combat.
My biggest concern about the game is the economy. I don't like the idea of "never losing" some things. Iron/Ore should be needed for repair gear/weapons. Ships shouldn't be able to be repaired with gold. They should be repaired with wood/ore. I'd personally like ships to be able to be "lost" permanently after being destroyed 3 times. Otherwise, we'll eventually end up with players not needing wood that much. Then again, there could be a lot of other things that'll keep the wood/ore/materials in balance. I dont' know...I haven't played the game. I just like things to be rough, not easy. I get tired of played games (consoles) on hard settings and still yawning. I just fear when everyone has their houses/ships....no one will need the materials that much anymore and the prices on them will drop.
Anyways, this game has risk vs reward which I haven't enjoyed since UO. Even if it doesn't apply additional "risk" as I would like....I'm satisfied enough. If a lot of these things bother you that much there are plenty of other games that have zero risk. Oh, and I don't recommend looking into World of Darkness if this game's risk bother you. heh Apparently in that game anyone who manages to become Prince of a city can mark any players they don't like for permanent death. :P

Archage crafting equipment upgrades (translated by Seatbelt)
General Discussion « ArcheAge 2/27/13 7:45:30 PM
I like the labor point system. Prevents players from making multiple alts and maxing their crafts in a short time. In addition is prevents players from flooding the market with stacks of the same piece of crafted item. You're generally either going to be a gatherer or crafter. You can do both, but your progress will be slower than someone who focuses on just the one.
I'm concerned about the lvl 50 crafting though. As someone else said the sets that can't be upgraded to the next level will just flood the market. It does seem a little over the top, but at the same time I don't like it easy either, so I'm conflicted.
I kind of liked the way they did the crafting in Aion.
Need mats in order to attempt the ron Spear. if it Crits you get a Noble Iron Spear. Need the Noble Iron Spear + mats in order to attempt the Worthy Iron Spear. If that crits you get the Worthy Noble Iron Spear. Need the Worthy Noble Iron Spear + mats to attempt the...etc etc If you fail the craft or the crit you basically have to start all over again.
It seems to me they're using this same method except throwing in a 2nd RNG so even if you succeed there's no guarantee it'll be the right version. I think at least 3/4 versions should be able to be upgraded. And, even if they keep their RNG on which piece you get they should at least add it so the 3 sets that can be upgraded each have an additional 25% chance to upgrade to its same version of itself. |

Originally posted by inporylemii I agree about the economy....at least it's a concern for me. The one thing most, if not all, MMO's fail to fully think through is the economy. They always seem to lack way of filtering out gold/items to prevent inflation and it normally ends up occuring rather quickly. While it is likely inevitable there are many ways to slow it down. The problem though....are the players.... "This is too hard to get..." "I shouldn't lose anything when this happens..." "This costs too much..." A lot of players (mostly US I'm sad to say) just want it risk-free like their console games. Things I'd like to see... You ship is permanently lost if destroyed 3 times. The first 2 times your ship is destroyed it costs 20% >> 40% of the "materials" to repair. If I attack someone to steal the materials they're carrying on their back and successfully defeat them....a random % of those materials should be lost/destoryed during the scuffle. If a ship carrying materials is destroyed some of those materials should be lost when they drop to the ocean. Things of those nature help keep an economy stable and slow down inflation. While I enjoyed "full looting" when someone died in Ultima Online I can understand why people loathe that idea. However, they should at least damage all of your gear when you die whether it be PvE or PvP. While you wouldn't lose your items, you'd at least have to pay gold to have it repaired. Oh well, we'll see how the game goes. As of now I like it more than all of the other MMO's out there.

I buy a spear...use it...4 levels later I buy a new spear and sell the old one to someone else. Poor crafters. In the end they were not only competing against other crafters...but themselves as well.

Originally posted by Frenetic The only MMO I've played (back in '97) that did a great job with housing was Ultima Online. Originally, it only allowed you to buy a variety of homes ranging from a small house to a castle and place them in open land. However, later they allowed you to buy empty lots of land and design your house from the ground up much like you would do in the Sims. When I saw them mention they were taking pages from Ultima Online I knew the housing would at least be better than anything out there right now.
I think the limited land in the "protected" area was intentional. It's basically meant to tease and lure you into venturing into the "unsafe" area to place your homes.
I'd like to see a good written layout of how housing will work in the "unsafe" area. I've read that homes within 250 meters of the castle/guild that owns an area are "safe" from being robbed by random players. However, if that castle/guild is taken over by another guild the houses within 100 meters of the losing castle are destroyed? Meaning you'll want to place your homes between 100-250 meters from the castle and you'll only need to worry about taxes changing when guild ownership of the land changes. My only theory on that is the 100 meters radius is meant specifically for the conquering guild and their members to build their city/castle while the 100-250 is for other players. I'd like confirmation on all this, or as I said before, a link to a well written description of the housing in "unsafe" areas.
Whatever the case I don't think they should increase "return value" from farm land there. The guild that owns the lands will already be receiving taxes from nearby houses owned by other players. If you add bonuses to farm lands on top of that it'll just create inflation.
So far I like the way they have things set up. I'm looking forward to grouping with guildies and setting out into the "unknown" world not knowing what PKers are lying in wait. I used to lead PK Hunting Parties in Ultima Online back in the day before they created Trammel (safe area). After that I made a PK and I'm looking forward to doing that as well. |

I reactivated my account the other day. They've improved most things that people complained about. I personally didn't have a problem with the game and I think they just made it easier. Anyways, the on thing that the game still lacks is depth. From lvls 1 - 55 it's just a long grind. There's no good story to the game. If you take FFXI for example every expansion had a big captivating story line to pull you in. So, after so many lvls you felt like you were accomplishing stuff in the game world unlike Aion where the main story is worse than some of the random quests in the game. |

Didn't APB shut down? I heard someone else picked it up and were calling it APB Reloaded, but I didn't think it was out yet. |

Sorry, but I'd have to say poop to all the previous games listed. Nothing I've personally played/seen has been better than Aion's character creation. Here's a link to two vids rom before the game was released. With version 2.5 recent release or close to being released there's supposed to be additional character creation selections I think.
Character Creation http://www.gametrailers.com/video/sdcc-09-aion/53219
Character Clothing/Couple Emotes http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2007-aion/21404
Version 2.5 which has recently been released or is soon to be. 3.0 is not far in the future either I think. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/may-2-aion/713582
Ditto to Jianyu. You can skin armor and paste it on your other armor so you always have the look you want and never look like you sewing 6 pieces of different gear together. They're also adding housing in 3.0.
Hey Jianyu....you Jianyu from original Zikel before merges and all? |

Rift setting itself up in 'direct' competition?
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 3/07/11 4:30:47 PM
Originally posted by jason_webb It's good marketing on Rift's side. Rift blows...just like WoW (no offense). MMO's today are in the trend of just being forced out like happy meals. |

Originally posted by stayontarget Tera doesn't have good PvP either. It's turning out to be a disappointment just like GW2 and RIFT, though with RIFT it was obvious from the beginning. |

Final Fantasy XIV: New Quests Coming

How is the travel in the game now? My g/f and I used to rock-paper-scissors to see who would lead us for 30 min to the area we needed to go for a 2min quest while the other watched tv. |

Dragon Age is an awesome game. Graphics weren't horrible, but the storyline was awesome.
Lunar: The Silver Star Story is probably the only game I liked as much as the Final Fantasy series. It's an older game so the Gameplay is oldschool like the older Final Fantasy series with Cecil, but it has anime cutscenes along with good voice acting and a good story. I actually liked it better than Final Fantasy when I first played it. You can probably find gameplay vids on youtube like the below link to the game intro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEIURTJKek0

Originally posted by hikaru77 I quit the game months ago, but I did resubscribe for the month of December and PvP is dead on Zikel. However, talking to a few friends who still play and transferred to other servers they say there is PvP everywhere. So, from what I heard Zikel is crap for PvP....3 other servers have PvP going on a lot. But, the last server I dont' know. |
