Aion is korean for, "OMG Grindfest cookie cutter mmo!!!"

True story.

I couldn't agree more. I love pvp but pvp shouldn't be an all or nothing situation. Anyone that says they want full loot pvp isn't gets disregarded in my book. There's always some mental defective that thinks whatever random game you're both playing is too  carebear because when someone kills you there isn't a character destroying event.

There were a few games that did this in the past simply because they didn't know better. You won't see another successful game utilize this system. Honestly, not a single one. The genre has matured from that primitive BS and has learned from the mistakes of the past.

If you want to be severely penalized for playing a game how about you send me your address and if you're within driving distance I'll kill you in pvp combat then promptly  drive over to your house, punch you in the face, take your wallet, kick your dog, and pack your computer into the back of my car before leaving.

EvE is like the marathon of MMOs. It's not "fun" unless you've been playing it for ages...and even then, it's still pretty boring.

Why? Fanboys will mewl over someone disagreeing that this isn't the holy grail of MMOs but here we go...The jump mechanic is unneccesarily drawn out and over used. Mining/harvesting makes the most tedious task you can think of look like a rollercoaster ride. PvP, while widespread, feels clumsy and not well thought out. The offline skilling system was kind of interesting when this game first came out, now it just feels limiting.

If spaceship/outerspace themes are what you're looking for well you're stuck with this steamer for a little while longer, but don't worry. Star Trek Online and a few other titles will be coming soon to finally put this lame horse out to pasture.

Quit trying to view it from your middle school and you should be good. Trust me you aren't missing anything, the info on the site is scant at best.

Chosen can't dual wield eh? Watch this video and enjoy eating your words....

I want real pvp ... all over, all the time ... with consequences!

Let me point you to a myriad of korean grinders that are right up your alley. Apparently Koreans love punishing themselves in their entertainment so you'll find plenty of games you'll like.

That model doesn't  translate to the states as most of us have limited time to play and don't want to spend it either destroying someone's progress or being penalized by our recreational diversions.

I tend to avoid Korean games. If the characters look even the slightest bit anime I run for the hills. I normally lean towards MMOs developed in the US or at least with US sensibilities...aka no small cute monkey-squirrel creatures, no cash shops, and absolutely NO grindfests.

That being said I've actually found a Korean game that I like. While Cabal Online definitely has several aspects that I normally avoid they all get washed away once combat comes into play.

GOOD:

Games are made or lost on the combat mechanics in my opinion. CO has one of the best setups I've ever seen. It's fast, interesting, beautiful at times, and most of all, when you are fighting you feel a connection with the rhythm of your character. There are no jerky animations. One move leads into the next and the one after to create a huge heaping helping of whup-ass.

Even playing the normally squishy and bird boned Wizard class you feel like a cage fighter. Sure you can attack at range but if that mob comes into melee distance you are putting all sorts of pain on it through frozen backhands and fiery uppercuts.

BAD:

The downside is that all the Korean elements are still there. Cash shops (booooo), player merchants that clog the town landscape, static key bindings, and for some puzzling reason Koreans don't seem to mind if their characters don't jump and cannot strafe whatsoever (WTH?!?)

Character movement is cumbersome at times. The point and click to move mechanic has never been a good one and even though you can WASD to move, the game will still want to override it with point and click at times. Having no jump is not only lazy but just plain goofy.

Finally, the cash shop in this game. Ugh. Well the upside is that there are no game-breaking swords, spells, or armor sets in there. It mostly consists of quality of life items like free rez items, exp boosts and the like, but just having a shop where things can be bought for real world currency makes the game itself feel less fantastic than it should be.

SUMMARY:

While it will surely devolve into a grindfest, I can't help but have fun feeling like a superhero from the excellent action based combat system of this game.

It's not a game I can see myself putting WoW-hours into but it's definitely a good break from the normal MMO.

4. Don't know what you mean. ( I'm Norwegian, I suck at English :P )

Just had to reply that saying you suck at English is a huge disservice. Your grammar and spelling is better than most of the native English speakers on these boards.

The only way I'd ever play an order char would have to be if the devs created a Slayer dwarf class, otherwise I'm a sucker for the bad guys.

Full PVP looting?! Well that's one way to ensure that this game won't make any amount of worthwhile money.

For all the retro sadomastic fetishists that like being put in their place by their entertainment...have fun I'm sure you'll enjoy getting ganked and taken back to square one over and over and over again. Oh and quit cutting.

The OP is a tool.

WoW has survived as long as it has simply because people have nothing better to do. Once a well made MMO comes along, after this horrible string of flops, WoW will lose the majority of it's base.

Age of Conan isn't that game, although it will be a nice diversion. WAR could be that game but I've learned to not count my chickens so quickly after several lackluster releases that pumped my hopes up prematurely. Anyone who is an MMO enthusiast will be waiting by my side with bated breath for the next big game regardless of who releases it...

I don't think Warhammer Online invented this type of pvp though...

No but the guys that are developing WAR did invent this type of pvp.

WoW will do what it can to remain valid and during it's several year run nothing has really managed to shake up Blizzard enough to take notice. It's nice to see that WAR is rattling the cage a bit, even though it won't slay the beast it will surely weaken it substantially.

Lets see how many signatures we can ram up SOE's gullet...and maybe, just maybe get them to resurrect our once glorious game...

First off I'm not writing this post to ruin the experience of anyone that currently plays this game and I'm not a bitter anti-SOE goon spouting diatribes whenever possible. I am writing this now because I found myself thinking of SWG...or at least how it used to be, and found that I felt a profound sense of loss strangely enough. If anything this post is intended to talk with the initial launch veterans about how the game was before it's direction and focus were lost in a foggy haze of confusion. This will be a long one...

SWG at release was a fantastic thing. Sure there were no vehicles, spaceships, and not a single jedi to be found but it was probably the most fun I've ever had playing an MMO. The player made economy was fantastic. You'd find these out of the way shops manned by extremely skilled weaponsmiths or armorsmiths and once you came back into town everyone would be clamoring over where you found that amazing armor etc.

Skill based character creation was amazing. So many different combinations were possible. I was a Bounty Hunter/Creature Handler. I saved for weeks and found a very shy armorsmith that could make epic composite armor. In addition to that I scrounged some krayt tissue for a scatter pistol and lightning rifle. I was a demon. I was training a Graul right before they capped off non-primary CH's pets. My friends and I would suit up in our storm trooper armor and go harass rebels on tatooine. When I wanted some downtime I would spend hours hunting down the best spots to drop harvesters on. There were a few times that I found a rare mineral or gas and I felt like I had literally struck gold.

No game before or since this has managed to conjure up these feelings for me. I came back recently to see how my once beloved game was fairing and found a painfully hollow husk of a once fabulous product. It's sad to see those elements that made this game so fantastic diluted or even completely gutted from whats on the live servers now.

Cheers to what was once a magnificently unique and fathoms-deep gaming experience.

1) Ship combat is repetitive. I know there will be an outcry about this statement but quit kidding yourself, it's slow, non-responsive, and very repetitive.

2) Sword combat is stiff and uninspired. People knock CoX and WoW but at least in those games you feel like combat is an extension of your physical self. There are quick decisions to be made and tactics to devise. In this game you stand and whack, maybe working up to a finishing move if you're trying real hard to enjoy yourself.

3) UI feels almost like an afterthought and is very ugly.

4) How many Jack Sparrow look alikes will paying customers have to stomach?

5) If you do decide to travel, all the towns are pretty much the same and traveling between them is really exciting if you enjoy watching paint dry.

Too bad I was looking forward to a change of game before the new year.

Waaaaaaaa!

People love to complain. I have been having a great time with this game, relatively bug free, since launch. Anyone who expects a completely bug free MMO at launch either doesn't play a lot of MMOs or is a complete tard.

If you think the game is that simple then I would recommend entering Fury Challenge. See how great your understanding of the game is when you pit it against the guys who have been playing since alpha, and know the real depth of it. :D

He isn't say the game is simple. He's saying its a farm fest. And rightly so. The fact that newbies are paired with players that can wtfbbq them in a couple rounds doesn't equal balance.  A few points...

Combat:

Here's what I saw of the combat....build up build up build up alpha alpha alpha die/kill. Granted since I was new I was mostly dying but wheres the skill? Possibly after being farmed countless times the newb progresses up the food chain but thats a lot of crap to shovel and it isn't particularly fun or skillful. Theres not even a rock/paper/scissors progression here. Everyone is the same thing and just standing around whacking at each other with varying degrees of success.

Graphics:

First off people are complaining about the game killing their systems. Quit whining, if your system can't run this quit playing on an pocket calculator and buy a grown up computer. Secondly, the character animations just don't feel right in my opinion. It's almost sluggishly over-animated. Lastly, character customization is woefully sparse and the faces and hair styles that are available are...unappealing, unless you like looking like a constipated Fabio.

Synopsis:

People can tout this as the anti-carebear hardcore pvp-fest that will redefine online combat but it just doesn't deliver. Theres a good skeleton there just no meat for the long run. Great concept. Poor execution.

I'm quite surprised at how incredibly satisfying it is for me to watch Archlord tank. About 2 or 3 months before hitting beta I said that the game would nose dive into the bargain bin soon after release and Gameloading threw a fit.

I rarely get enjoyment from watching other people fail, but man oh man...I'm loving this. Gameloading, yes we all know that you are on the Codemasters payroll but even you have to recognize now that this game is the disposable waste of code that everyone has been telling you it was for too long now.

I'll be here with a smug expression on my face as I watch this game claw for ground on its steady slide into obscurity and failure. Oh...being so right has never felt so good.

City of Heroes/Villains. Something about that game always feels like home no matter where I go between subs.
