WoW...followed by SWToR and ESO.

Actually no. TSW community probably isn't cheating or conspiring or stuffing the ballot with fake accounts. Overall TSW's community is fairly mature. That type of community is another of its unusual strengths.

TSW fans are trying to get out the message to vote, because TSW fans like the game. But cheating or conspiring to win? I doubt it. TSW community isn't like that. It's the the type of place where fans run a help channel to get people started in the game (sanctuary) and another channel for running dungeons (noobmares) where noobs are welcome and people are patient and understanding. Compare that to games like FFXIV where fans make channels to keep out noobs and not only gear check people but boot them out if they don't have the achievements that prove they've already completed the content. (TSW isn't the only community like this obviously; EVE is another game that has an amazing community that helps people get started in the game.)

I'm going to give ESO the benefit of the doubt and assume that your attitude doesn't represent the community. Because if ESO is cheating and using using whatever tactics and your attitude is "Duh, of course we have no integrity and we're the kind of people you'd be stuck playing with if you join ESO" then win or lose, ESO doesn't have a good community.

If ESO fans rally to vote and win, then good for them. But don't assume all communities are rotten if that's what you're used to in other games.

I don't cheat. Nor do I encourage cheating in any way, shape or form. But I know human nature. Please don't kid yourself into believing that the TSW community is made up of pure angels.  My comments there are from a purely nuetral perspective on the nature of the human race. The notion that the ESO community would have an above average composition of unsavory personalities while saying the TSW community sits upon some kind of moral high ground and is compromised of purely innocent angels is ridiculous.

The ESO community is actually one of the most mature and civil I have every seen and that comes from 20 years of playing MMOs. Perhaps TSW is as well. I don't know.

But people are going to attempt to cheat because people are people. Does that make it right? No. Does that make it fact? Yes.

Eve the community that invites noobs to their corp, gets them to come out to low sec, kills them and takes their stuff for giggles....yeah really good community.

There is a reason those changes happened...the populations were already falling to newer games.

Or... Could it be that developers/publishers saw WoW numbers and wanted to go for a piece of that pie?

Most of the drastic changes made brought older games into the easier, simplified WoW model.

If you look at the population graphs for DAoC in  mid 2002 the population stared a downturn.  TOA in 2003 brought life back then WoW came and killed it off.

Pfft, things we want in our MMOs? That list writes itself. It's far more important to establish what we *don't* want. (or at the least, what I don't want. Your mileage may vary on this list.)

1) No more old-school WoW quests, with quest text I don't read, objectives involving killing 10 of a thing that I could do in my sleep, returning for a miniscule reward, and towns that serve as nothing more than hubs for thirty of these fracking things.

2) Hotbutton combat. By which I mean, targetting something, and then clicking through a sequence of buttons on my hotbar to kill it. Being visually engaged with the combat is fun. Watching cooldowns on my hotbar is not. A few games have gotten us away from this somewhat, TERA, Neverwinter, it's time to recognize hotbar combat as the relic it is and be done with it forever.

3) Overbloated quest journals. This is related to 1, but it needs its own bullet point. If there are ever more than two or three quests in my journal it's too many. The last thing I want in my entertainment product is the feeling I get at work, where I'm bogged down with so much crap to do that I don't know where to start.

4) Over-the-top visual effects. This one is aimed at SWTOR and FFXIV in particular, but it's a good lesson for all. If something doesn't need a particle effect, don't put one in. A good example would be meditating or seething in SWTOR. My character is down in a meditative pose, or pacing back and forth Darth Maul style, there's no confusion as to what he's doing, he DOESN'T NEED TO GLOW. (I could spend a couple hours on that soapbox, don't get me started) Or as in FFXIV, if it's a basic attack, does it need to flash and fill the screen like it's an end-game ability? It's fine if you're alone, but if you've got twenty guys doing it, very quickly it becomes visually exhausting and impossible to tell what the hell's going on.

5) No forced grouping. Now before you freak out about this one, let me just underline that the data is in on this, and people hugely prefer solo or duo gameplay. The common response to this is to say something like, "Well go play a single player game then!" That is a flippant and irritating answer. Everything we know about MMOs today tells us that it isn't being forced to group up that brings people to MMOs, it is the sense of being in a living, breathing game environment, and of being part of something larger than yourself. Making friends by chance, in natural, organic ways, is fun. Being forced to make friends--indeed, being unable to proceed with the game unless you do--is not. Remember, your target audience here are gamer geeks. We are by and large an introverted bunch. Most of us have one or two good friends and generally have no interest in going much beyond that.

6) While we're talking about grouping, how about: No more Tank, Healer, Damage trinity. A group of any size, and of any composition, should be able to find a way to use their unique combination of skills and abilities to complete any of the game's content. Finding yourself humped because your healer or your tank dropped connection, and hence discovering that the entire evening has been wasted, is not fun.

7) While we're on that subject, how about doing away with content that takes all night to finish? Your target audience, the gamers who will be spending money on your game? They can afford to do that because they have lives outside of the game. They have jobs. You want them to have jobs. Jobs mean disposable income, and disposable income is something you can reap as a game designer, provided your game is good enough to spend money on. But, if they have jobs, there's a good chance they don't have as much free time. Most of them will have, oh, maybe two hours a night? Maybe less if they have people and responsibilities at home to attend to? Get the content down into bite-sized chunks.

8) Story is good in an MMO. It can really add something. Story wherein I am the chosen hero, the one man who can bring peace to the land or whatever? That story in an MMO is irritating to the bone. Remember, you're making a *world* here, one with many people. We're totally fine with feeling like we are just one part of something larger. Indeed, that is the very reason why many of us are here. If we stand out, if we shine, it should be because we're good at the game, not because the story tells us what a special snowflake we are.

There. That's my list. Sorry for the TL;DR post.

My list looks nothing like yours.  Do not like action combat...do not like the lack of trinity...

I personally see nothing wrong with the genre. Right now I can think of at least 6 games I would love to be able to play all at the same time! There are many others I could play and be happy with as well.

Everyone keeps beating up the genre, and comparing games from the past. Many of those games are still there to play. I hear epic tales of DAoC and how superior it was, but no one plays it. To me it's the players, not the genre.

Simple to explain.

The companies have DRASTICALLY changed said game(s) over the course of the years in an attempt to retain players, which in contrast shortened the life expectancy of said games significantly.

DAoC, as your example, was hit with Trials of Atlantis expansion, the NGE of the game.  It changed the entire focus of the game from a lighter PvE grouping that expanded into heavy PvP grouping at end game into a forced open world raid grind that was required to compete in PvP.  This completely changed the focus of the game and saw an exodus of well over half the playerbase.

As mentioned above, NGE from SWG turned what was a great game for those who were happily playing it and could have expanded upon the concept into a completely different game, seeing a similar if not more drastic exodus of players than DAoC saw.

My original love was Asheron's Call.  The game as of today is nothing but a shell of what it once was, not nearly the same.  While it may feel like my old bike, it's changed to the point that I barely recognize it anymore.

Kinda annoyed when people say it's rose-tinted glasses when the games were significantly better when they were released.  So no, I don't agree with the genre is fine.  It's volatile and entirely filled with raid grinding WoW rejects.

There is a reason those changes happened...the populations were already falling to newer games.

Not really the case.  Every game declines with age, can't retain players forever.  But these moves completely ruined any chance of a healthy decline, more of a gushing dam break rather than a leak.

Those changes happened were greedy decisions made by suits, not developers.  Lucas Arts expressly expedited the SWG NGE because they were greedy and it cost them the entire future of the game.

You can either decline or try to renew...WoW keeps itself alive and extremely healthy by changing things.  Not ever change works it is a risk.  SWG and DAoC tried changes that failed, but to say that games were just fine as there were before the changes is a lie cause if they were then the feeling by the company for a drastic change would not have existed.

Why not invuln npc's on a PvE server?
Question is profitability.  Games at not made as works of art...they are made to make money.  The investments are too high to not aim at the biggest market.  Otherwise you do not have a WoW, EQ, or UO to manipulate...you have a much cheaper indie product that people look at the graphics and hate.

I blame the level mechanics and the huge gap in power between lowbies and vets.

Maybe Wow should do like GW2 and level you down to the zones level, while it still would be possible to do stuff like this at least it would be way harder, particularly if you also PvP flag anyone out on a NPC murder spree.

Do not like that GW2 mechanic...rather them just make NPC's invuln in PvE servers.

Even though EVE has worst combat of all games I have played, its still best MMO on the market.

If it had PvE not gated behind PvP I might agree, but it does not so I do not.

Not quite understanding your usage of the phrase "gated behind", which to me means there's some sort of PVE content you cannot do until you complete some sort of PVP requirement, can you elaborate?

Now, if you mean that the PVE content is not entirely independent from the influence of PVP, then I understand and agree they are not.

since the moved all Lvl 5 missions out to low sec it is behind PvP.

Well yes, you are correct, LVL 5 missions are in low sec, and I suppose Sleepers are in Wormholes which are also PVP zones, but that's a small portion of the PVE content in this game. Also, some high sec escalations take you to low sec as part of their arc, annoying I'll have to agree as I've abandon those about 50% of the time if the system is active in pod kills.

So how about "some" PVE content is gated behind PVP, that sound about right?   (not that I think this is a bad thing, else I wouldn't keep playing)

Just annoying that the higher level or more difficult (but really it is only difficult as in you need better builds not different tactics really) is behind the PvP.  I would be about as annoying if to get to fight in a fleet war you first had to complete PvE missions to be eligible.  You can still gank, but if you want to be in a fleet for PvP you need to PvE first.

It is what killed me in the game.  When a PvE Lvl 5 ship is defenseless in PvP and I have to go through PvP areas to get to the LvL 5 I quit.

Anyone can start this game. The basics are easy. Run missions and mine. Train up some skills and go. The problem is mining and missions are not that fun to everyone so people do not want to do it. But to say you cannot get anywhere starting is a lie...you choose not to do the things that are there.

That being said I am not a fan of the game due to its pve, but I started from nothing and worked up myself to flying carriers and the best mining stuff with no ones help but mining and salvaging missions. If I could do it others could too.
Already in the game basically. Just people do not do it.
PvE'ers outnumber PvP'ers. So why cater to the smaller group?
Sandboxes are not stressful...they are generally boring. Little to do besides boring repetitive actions, I.e. mining, grind mobs, ganking pvp actions. Sandboxes like to tell you they leave it to you but fail to say that 90% of your time will be a boring chat room. It is telling when people play games like Eve and have to watch a movie or read a book to be entertained while playing.
Wow till I get the molten mount...then I can try Swtor again
Want to blame someone? Blame PvP'ers.
