I've played this for a little and created a couple of characters. I have to say, and it probablly is the norm, that many players want to blow through quests.

I HATE that. That is not me at all. I like to look in every nook and cranny and take my time. I'm not looking to level as fast as I can. I was invited to a fellowship yesterday and they were blowing through close to level 15 quests. I advanced so far, but evidently missed the crucial loot, and didn't find out until later I didn't complete the quest. I can't think that quick. I have an analytical mind but it takes time to stew on things. I quit the fellowship without saying anything, which was probably rude, but members of the fellowship were already moving on and I was lagging behind. This actually makes me want to quit, and I do enjoy the game when left to my own speed.

I enjoy crafting in this game immensely. I don't mind repetition . I'd probably be invaluable to a guild if they understood what I could provide. Nevertheless, it seems players want to see others advance quickly and run from quest to quest. I'm older and the bathroom calls too often. I can't tell you how many times I've been left behind.

I'm going to keep playing for now because I'm having fun crafting, and the quests are still fun in the right setting.

Because of the speed a vast majority of players play makes me solo. It's not that I want to, it's more that I'm a casual gamer. I don't mind stopping to play my guitar with other musicians. I don't care if 95% of the guild is above me in level. I'm not in a race.  I do like to quest leisurely, but I excell in crafting. Plus I love the commeraderie of allegiance chat. Just don't expect me to fill a fellowship for a quest. I have ADD and can't stay focused for a very long time in something intense.

I really enjoy AC2 but I wonder if I can find a place where I fit in here.

Very good post and right on the money, this is the reason  I like to solo, to many people who wont smell the roses and just like to fly through content, the only way to group these days is by joining a guild with like mind set people

Yea I would say SWTOR, WOW, eq2, Lotro, even a game like Ryzom is casual, gw1 or 2
Kill 10 boars=nuff said  LOL just kidding, it is actually a good not great game, with a good story line that does suffer from to many bad quests
The Secret World, Lord of the rings online, Star Wars The Old republic-these are the games with the best story lines,  Vanguard is very good with a decent story and a more traditional mmo approach.   Between EQ2 and WOW-Wow has the better story all though I do not recomend either.

I do like sandboxes, but the "story" you create playing those games is really not the sort of story the story-minded players are looking for. They're just "interesting stuff that happens". They're practically experiences. They only become stories in the telling - like here, on the forums. Some of it is really cool, but they lack most of the charm (themes, arcs, character development, subtext, etc.) of good, professionally-crafted stories as in a novel, a movie, or a game like The Longest Journey.

I had a lot of interesting stuff that happened to me in games like EVE and UO, and on their own they make for some fun short anecdotes. Still, none of that gives one the long-running, novel-ish taste of, say, the Imperial Agent storyline from SWTOR.

First time I stepped into UO, and then into a succession of MMOs for years, I said, "Uh, why no decent story?". Good, rich, consistent, big arcs of storylines never hurt, and honestly, I agree with the OP: Great storytelling is really really rare in MMOs.

On a related note, I think Blizzard did OK with storytelling in WOW for its time. We're past that now, but sadly, neither Bioware nor Funcom has managed to blend good storytelling into a solid game with a lot of liberty of gameplay.

The first game with plenty of well-implemented sandbox features and impressive developer-created story is going to make it big, in my opinion.

Agree 100% with you and the op, Tsw and Tor are really the only mmo's out of the thousands that have existed that have genuine story lines.  Lotros excellent lore and good story are ruined by the "kill 10 boar" quests that constantly come up.  The only sand box that had any kind of a story for me was Eve and that is because I pretended I was a pirate looking to loot and plunder, unfortunately no one but me knew I was playing a pirate so the story was an individual one LOL. I remember Shadow bane, to me the best part of the game was the PvP experience where groups of people would go out and attack other groups. the worst part of the game was when the group built a city, houses and such-that was a grind to me and not much fun-but other people like that sort of thing-so to each his own I guess.

Like I said on page one, this is the beauty of MMO's today. They are free or close to it, There are story mmo's, traditional mmo's, super combat and graphics mmo's, sandboxes, mmo's with great crafting and harvesting, and mmo's with some great PvP action-It really is the Golden Age of Pay nothing mmo's. If you do want to spend money you have excellent sand boxes like Eve and Darkfall or you can go back to the most traditional of all themepark mmo's EQ and see where it all started, they even brought back the classic sand box Asherons Call 2--Enjoy
I would go with Vanguard, Eq2 is not a bad game but the super easy combat bothers me, Vanguard at least has some challenge to it, vanguard does lag a bit and yes it is a bit creaky but overall more fun than eq2

There has never been a golden age of mmos. The golden age will come when an mmo reaches the casual market, similair to how gw2 is doing it. Themeparks are the future, you just need to build on them.

themepark games are not casual lol. Sandbox games are for  casual gamers. Are you sure you know what casual means? Because themeparks are anything but casual. And games use to be casual, just to difficult for some to grasp how to play and needed their hands held.

Eve is for a casual player?

So what should an older pvp mmo addict buy now to have some fun ? There is not only one mmo, where everybody agrees that it's awesome. Everybody just spends time on this mmo site to search something without any luck in my opinion. A few years ago you had wow , lineage 2 , even Aion . Aion turned into some f2p shit. I tried to play it but i had problems to find people for main quest. It's hard  to find something. I'm thinking  about this gw2 but so many negative feedback i got from posts.

I would not put much stock in many of the negative reviews unless they also list the positive, GW2 is a very good exploring game with great graphics , above average Pvp, fairly open world and good combat and good crafting if you can figure it out. I personally liked GW1 a bit better because it had a excellent PvP vs very good for GW2 and I liked the linier PvE experience in Gw1 a bit more

For game makers it is a golden age. They are able to slap together a turd of a game and make a pile of money. It is a dark age for the MMO  consumer. The Market is driven by unethical companies that have no qualms about selling a sub-standard product. They are more interested in the "quick buck" than long term profits and readily destroy any good reputation they once had to acheive this. They are supported by legions of online shills who are payed to lie about..i mean hype these  games.   How does this story end? The consumer smartens the heck up and spends their entertainment dollars else where.  I have accepted that the industry is incapable of putting out anything of value and moved onto FTP games and offline activities..

No .. all they are guilty of is not to make the game YOU like. You are just bitter because they progress without you.

If they make a pile of money, enough people like it. That is the principle of supply and demand.

It is a good time ... just not for you.

Perhaps you should open your eyes and read some posts before jumping to such conclusions. In fact he and many others here feel the same. Think you are the only one in this thread that likes gimped games...........hmmmmm

There's no shortage of bitter burnt out mmo players on this site. It doesn't mean they're right. It just means their time has come and gone and they don't know it yet.

Do believe you see more bitter new age gamers complaining about crappy games than you do about old timers like myself complaining about them. Just saying.

They hype up a game so much and think its better than anything in the world. Play it for 3 weeks and quit because their story dried out and they have nothing to do.

The fact is most of us old timers just want decent games that dont center on just one aspect, but all aspects of a mmo. Why should a mmo be limited to just story, or just pvp? It should have a happy medium between all features and mechanics to provide better entertainment and casual to hardcore gaming. It should be open to all sides not just one or the other. Older mmo's did this, and felt more lively. I personaly dont hate the newer games, they just arent what they could be.

Whats wrong with having a large open world in a themepark? Restricted pvp by levels to prevent griefing? To have story but no restrictions on how you evel? To have an in depth crafting system equal to the looting sysytem for combatant and crafters to be on equal grounds? To have crafters take part in pvp in a different aspect instead of fighting (craft turrets, weapons, structures, etc)?

Why must our mmos be so single sided and we just have to deal with it? Swap games every moth is not my idea of fun. The community is fun, the people make a good game. They leave every few weeks just hurts the game.

MMO's need to incooperate a wide variety of features mechanics, and aspects and be able to use them together to make a good freaking game. Not just a story or a pvp event.

You make some very good points, I to believe that a good community makes for a" better" game, I do not really believe that the community makes a good game but it sure does enhance the experience, for ex when AOC first came out I really enjoyed the game but the community was really bad and took some of the luster off.

I do not mind swapping games every few months, but I am a more casual player and though I do join a guild from time to time I also enjoy solo play or occasional grouping . Many players like myself like to switch games to keep it fresh and interesting and avoid being burnt out.

I was always surprised that Vanguard did not make more of a splash with its big open world, great crafting , Diplomacy, and good combat. On the other hand it could not run properly on many peoples computers

There are many sand boxes on the horizon so it will be interesting to see how populare they are or if they will go F2P

Surely OP is just being sarcastic. This is the crappiest time for MMOs. It can only get worse once all the sandbox games end up failing.

Nope I am quite serious, this is the golden age for those of us who want to play a good quality mmo that is F2P or close to F2P. Although I do agree that this is not that great for sand box ers, but still you have xyson and ryzom and if you want to do a sub you have eve and DF and now AC2

This must be satire or the first poster is trolling. All those games range from bad to very bad. Not one is a sandbox where you get to make your own way. All are cottoncandy storybook MMOs where they force feed you the "story."

Sandbox or GO HOME.

Xyson and Ryzom are not sand boxes?   I think my post makes it clear that this is the Golden age for people who do not want to pay a sub, as there are now many quality games where you do not have to. Of course Eve is a quality game but you have to pay a sub and unless you are into tiny space ships, dots and spread sheets it may be boring for you.

I semi agree with another poster who said 2003 was a golden age because of the excellent but flawed Shadowbane and SWG--but again those were games with a sub.

I shall now debunk this post, MMO at a time.

SWTOR - Broken F2P model, the worst end game I have ever laid eyes on. Right now I couldn't recommend this to anyone. 300 million to create this? All the money spent on voice overs and well acted cut scenes. I love good story, but save it for my single player games, if I wanted to be sucked in I would play Farcry 3, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy.

TSW - This game is better than SWTOR, it's puzzles are somewhat engaging, and its classless progression is nice. However it suffers from broken unbalanced pvp, no raids, terrible hardcore mode 5 man dungeons. I could suggest this to someone however, so  not so far off the mark on this one.

Vanguard - Ohh this game could of had it all, but I could never suggest to someone a game that has not had a significant update in about five years. It lacks polish in so many areas, I love what Vanguard could and should be, and perhaps supporting it is a way to get it to that place, but see it for what its free to play model is please, a cash grab. in a dying game.

Tera - No complaints on this suggestion, great game, but do not play down its pvp which is by far its most entertaining element. If you don't like pvp, then I would in all honesty suggest something like Final Fantasy XI, but in this list you are only suggesting F2P games, so EQ2.

GW2 - No opinion on this one, I haven't played it. Don't like its feature list, leveling up to access new zones and armor skins doesn't sound very appealing to me, and its pvp isn't FFA or Full loot and doesn't hold a candle to Tera.

Xyson - How dare you recommend this game to anyone. As far as sandoxes go, why not recommend Mortal Online while you are at it. Simple fact, you cannot recommend a single sandbox game right now for free, the best sandbox at the moment is Eve Online which can be free if you play like a boss, but don't go selling Xyson to anyone.

On your last few suggestions I'll do these in quick fire.

Aion - Very Grindy, very much dying - play at your own peril, this one's days are numbered folks.

AoC - Pay to win nightmare, you can subscribe to this mess, and still have to pay for items off the shop to compete, this one is a dud, a mess of a game that held so much potential.

EQ2 - you need to put money down for this game, otherwise the limitations are just to great, if you get lucky and the class you want to play with the race you want to play is on offer then fantastic, I have an SOE all acess pass, so I play it right now but I find the constant immersion breaking mounts, and cosmetic items to be ruining my fun.

LOL---you did not de bunk but rather expressed your opinion, that is what is great about MMORPG.com, people can come on read someones post express their own opinion and be totaly wrong. But I do appreciate the difference of opinion

There certainly are some little things that Tor could improve on, but what they really need to do is put everything away and work on the space game,  Lol I play Tor for awhile for the ground game and then i play STO for a good space game

T

Holy cow how could I forget Lotro, although to get the most out of it you have to buy episodes it is still mostly F2P and is and will always will be on my list of MMO's. A fantasic combination of Graphics, story and Lore with crafting that although is not up to Vanguards greatness is still pretty good. so yes Lotro would be #11 on my list . Imagine that 11 MMO's at my finger tips and I barely have to spend a dime!!!!

Story is trivial in a great mmo. Story u talk about so much last a few weeks to months then boredom. Need much more than a story for a mmorpg lol. Golden age? More like the dark age. And I'm waiting for the enlightened age.

Thanks to TSW and TOR and in a more limited sense Lotro and STO story has made MMO's much more satisfying to play, no longer will I have to go through a very boring grind to reach the so called mana of end game

Unfortunately I had to go pick up a pizza and could not complete my essay but this really is the Goldan Age for people who do not want to pay a sub but still want to play quality MMO games.  As one poster said there are not to many sand boxes with the exception of Xyson but certainly mine craft could be considered and Ryzom while not free offers 150 levels before you have to pay.

I left out one game which is quite good and that is Fallen Earth-part sand box, part theme park.  What ever some of you think of some of these games most can agree that as far a s F2P or very little to play this is the Golden Age of MMO's

Now I understand that for some hard core posters who have these nostalgic dreams of SWG making a come back or who sit and relive the days of EQ (dont sit start playing it is free now) it is a sad day for them, but for the rest of us it is manna from heaven. This is what my MMO game folder looks like

1. Tsw

2.  SWTOR

3. Vanguard

4. Guildwars 2

5. Guild wars 1 and of course all expansions

6. STO

7. Fallen Earth

8. Ryzom

9. Tera (will be downloading to play again on Jan 16)

10. AOC--terrible F2P option but I love the combat

11. LOTRO- edited in, a true leader in F2P

12. Uncharterd Waters- a little known but a gem of a sailing sandbox

Especially if you do not want to spend much money.

You have 2 GREAT story mmo's in TSW and SWTOR. TSW gives you great graphics, story , cut scenes, production, mystery, puzzles. Combine this with SWTOR which gives you GREAT story, production, cut scenes, combat, and good PvP. These are the two best story MMO's ever made!

Love SWTOR but do not like their space game, then just download Star Trek Online, This game has improved massively in the last 2 years and offers a really fun space game and and average but functional ground game, if you switch back and forth from this to SWTOR than you have the best of both worlds.

Want a traditional MMO with a little extra? Than just download Vanguard, it is a little creaky under the hood, but this baby has it all including Diplomacy a fun card game. There are not to many Worlds as open as this.   Want something even more traditional eq is now going F2P from what I have read

Dont like the slightly creaky combat of Vanguard or TSW--------Big News---Tera with its great combat is going F2P.  Dont get me wrong the stories in TSW and SWTOR are Great but like anything else it can burn you out. If you want to come home and just KILL< KILL< KILL than tera is your game and the Pvp aint bad either.

Hey how bout a traditional game with great story, graphics, Lore and exploring with good crafting ----Yup LOTRO. I am not sure but Lotro may be one of the Grand daddys of F2P and they keep churning out quality content to this day.

Love the theme park but want it modern with very good Pvp- Just get Gw2, beautifull colors and great exploring, pretty good combat and plenty of PvP make this a game that is really fun, me being an oldie I like GW1 slightly better as I like its PvP a bit more but both games are fun

Tired of these darn themeparks and just want to play an Sandobox, than just download Xyson. You will find yourself in the middle of nowhere and you know what that means Sandbox Heaven, explore! the world is huge

These are just some of the games that offer either F2P or just pay a little  he,he ,he. On my computer i have all these games and more on my hd and play them all plus eq2, aoc and aion, Of these 3 Aion gives you the best bang for your buck as eq2 and aoc while fine games have really bad F2P options

The only games that have what your looking for is UO ,AC and AC2. AC2 is in Beta and you can play it with a sub to AC. They say there wont be a Charactor wipe after Beta so that is what i would suggest.

All the modern games are the same as you described. This is exactly why im so excited about the re release of AC2.

All i can say is give it a try, I have playied every game out there and they are all the same except the old school game that will still suck you in an give the the experiance your looking for. AC2 has the best Graphix of the 2.

AC2 for story?  OK, look i like AC2 but story is not the reason why---TSW or SWTOR= Nuff said
