Yup it must be those "welfare queens" with their $5000 computers, who would rather spend money on games than food for their families, and those darn 1.3 million unemployed former workers who just as soon as they get their unemployment checks run out and buy a combo of Assas creed and WOW-thank heaven repubs are not going to extend their time limit for checks. Not to mention those lazy college kids who instead of hitting the books are playing games all  day while their parents go broke paying their tuition. How about obese people!!!!! Stop blowing your money at McDonalds or bad games like Sims 3.

Cubical warriors unite!  We spend all day in our cubes we should get to grouse about those that don't!:)

The World------SWG- massive worlds, not even close, although Vanguard is very good

Combat-----COH or Tera---COH was the master of tab targeting and managed to make it very exciting

crafting------SWG or perhaps Istara

PvP-----For anyone who has ever played the game there can only be one answer and that is Shadowbane, I would however say that Guild Wars 1 was excellent

Story-Quests---It has to be either SWTOR or TSW

Lore----Lotro--easy pick

smooth play on just about any machine---WOW---again not even close

Graphics---AOC, play it and you will agree

When  I went to buy a computer I did a lot of homework, and found AVA has a much better rep and fewer repairs than IBUY or cyber, I went with AVA about a year ago and it was an excellent decision. The price is just a hair more than build it yourself and you get to chose an array of options or you can contact AVA and they will recommend parts or a comp and tell you why

I'm 25 years old. I've been playing MMORPG's since 1995.

Meridian 59 released 1996. Ultima Online released 1997. Everquest released 1999. Hate to nitpick, but I don't think you were playing any MMORPG's in 1995, when you were 7 years old, and no MMORPG was out yet.  Anyway, to the point, I think most gamers start to feel that way after a while and just need to take a break. Try some other game genres out then come back to MMO's later on.

This ^         If you want to play an old style game play Vanguard, it needs players. EQ is still out there why are you not playing it?

Myself I am much older than you and have played Pong when it first came out and many of the old mmo's. I do not have a problem with the new mmo's "times they are achangin" although I do have a soft spot for Shadowbane

It seems to me that this game is one of the most heavily criticized games of all time. When people stick to the facts there posts come out quite acceptable pro or con (crit of the space game was well deserved, no one expected a mini space, we all thought a full fleshed out space game would be there) . Why though people were surprised when Bioware came out with a story driven mmo is beyond me? combat, story, companion, star wars atmosphere , crafting , PvE and PvE make this a good game for me, like any mmo, it does need improvements and they are improving it.
The reduced xp is prob the worst restriction, soon you will find it to difficult to level and you will either have to buy xp paks, or become a sub, at any rate going through without paying anything is brutal
people who do not like a game will come here and say that game is dead or on life support or what ever, we who know better just laugh and move along
Vanguard,  constantly being bashed but still one of the best games out there
I have TOR on my computer and play 2 or 3 times a week, I just find it so much more satisfying than a game like ff14 which is so bland to me. That being said most mmo's are bland to me so I do like TOR's hook with cut scenes and story. If they come out with an excellent space game that would be fantastic, even a jump to lightspeed would be welcome
Space geme baby, its all about the space game, after all what is Star wars but a great space game-------repeat after me SPACE GAME
TOR hands down. TSW is also good, certainly worth playing are Lotro, Duco, sto-oh and Never Winter

I have no problem with people expressing their opinion on this forum, this is after all a discussion forum, I think the moderators take it a bit to seriously and do want this to be a rah rah forum. It is important when you criticize or praise to back it up with your reasons for doing so. I do get a bit annoyed when people say things like "SWTOR has a bad story line and the cut scenes are weak" or "Vanguard is just not a deep game" These are silly statements just meant to invoke a response.    If you are going to say a game is boring then state your reasons for saying so and do not be surprised when someone comes back and disagrees with you, that is what discussion is all about.

Recently I got a warning from mmorpg for trolling when I asked "What makes FF a better game than Vanguard" this was not meant to downgrade FF so much as to create a discussion as to how deep a game Vanguard is and has always gotten a bad rap. This is America we have a right to express our opinion, some people seem to get really annoyed when someone enjoys a game, it is one thing to disagree with someone, but to tell someone they should not enjoy a game is lame.

I really don't want to slam ARR here because I've always liked FF games and I really want it to do well but let's be honest here, it doesn't seem to bring alot of new to the table.

It seems to have very pretty graphics but so do plenty of MMOs i.e. Tera.  And sure it's detailed but so are plenty of games i.e GW2.  Maybe a good story but that didn't do much for TOR.  I know it isn't the combat... I see absolutely no difference from that and a game from 2005.  Yet, Everyone that  plays it seems to really like and enjoy the game.  What's more strange is that ARR doesn't seem to have a hate following like many of it's competitors do for whatever reason.  From never playing ARR on the outside looking in I can't see what the big draw to the game is and I hope someone can explain it to me.

What is the major draw in ARR that pulls you back enough to make it your favorite new MMO?    Is the story really that good?  Is the world really immersive?  That would make sense combined with the music I'm sure square put into the game. Maybe it just gets alot more fun later on?  What is about the game that makes it so good for you?

Because it brings all those old aspects of traditional MMOs and puts it in a Final Fantasy skin and then polishes it to the extreme.  Not only that, but it offers what I haven't seen in an MMORPG since FFXI.  Multiple content paths that aren't always about just leveling and then raiding/grinding for gear.  There is so much "extra" and it's all done along the journey, with multitudes of goals to strive for as well as being fun and immersive.  The music, sound and graphics are top notch as is the "world" feeling.  The storyline is just awesome and paced well, much better than SWTOR with it's really odd pacing that would put me off of the story altogether.

Then you have the roles being nice and solid and every class having it's own story and feel and place in the world and this includes crafting and gathering, all on ONE character which in turn creates a better community in my opinion because people are now actually held a bit more accountable for their actions.

So yeah, that's basically it in a nutshell.  Obviously not everyone is going to enjoy an MMORPG that doesn't innovate(although I think it does in ways that have yet to be echoed through out the genre, like the one character any class/job any time aspect and the progression systems that peel back like an onion showing multiple layers of them) but there is quite a following of those like myself itching for this type of game just brought to the modern era with all the new bells and whistles of today's computers.

You do a very good job of making a case for FF, but then you say that it has a better story than SWTOR, I really had to face palm to that-like most mmo's TOR needs to improve themselves (space game I am looking at you) but to say that FF has a better story is the height of folly.

Nothing really, there is nothing in this game with a hook that stands out. This mmo might be the blandest game I have ever played, they worship mediocrity. What amazes me is how they arranged the beginning experience. Even people who like the game admit that until lvl 15 or 20 it is the most boring experience they have ever had. I like games with a hook like TSW and TOR for its story or Tera and AOC for its combat, shadowbane or GW1 for its PvP. If you compare this game to a somewhat similar game Vanguard it loses in almost every respect. It only beats it in Graphics and that is because Vanguard is a years old game. I think people are so hungry for any mmo that they jump in with blinders on. If a game has crafting, questing, combat(no matter how boring it is), switch your classes every 10 lvls, some sand box elements (light very light) and a somewhat bland story they scream HALLELUJAH!

This is just to answer your question .However If people love it , more power to them. These boards are great for discussion, but if a game is fun to someone that is all that really matters.

"To much fun, that's news to me, to much fun, there must be, a whole lot of things that I haven't done, I aint never had to much fun"        What is the World coming to, we are lamenting for the days when we did not have fun? The best games for me have a hook in them that makes it fun like TOR with its great story and cut scenes, ditto Secret World, Tera with its great combat overcoming its lack luster quests-ditto AOC, Shadowbane with its great PvP and suspense despite not having any quests at all. Vanguard with its Diplomacy and crafting, despite its bugs and lag.   Games without fun?-just endless grinding-NO THANKS!

Thank everyone for discussing  why FF, and not Vanguard or Tera or SWTOR. I do find it interesting though that most people when they talked about FF talked about how well it was laid out, how logically managed it was, how one thing led to another etc. yep just like A major corporation, laid out in a perfectly logical manner but without a soul. Not one person commented that FF was FUN. Myself I will take a fun game with flaws than a Paint by the numbers soulless vessel. TOR for all its problems had great story lines and watchable cut scenes, Tera has quests like FF but exciting combat, and Vanguard has an explorable world (not zone, after zone, after zone, zzzzzzz) decent combat, excellent crafting, diplomacy(not seen in any other mmo), great dungeons, is both solo and group friendly. Does it have worts and some bugs yes, does it have an abundance of character compared to FF oh yes indeed.  NO chocobos though LOL.

All that being said, FF is still a playable game, just I don't know, just bland

I recall saying how fun it was even in my original post I said this game is effing fun and then proceed to give examples why, or maybe you forgot to read that, but it doesn't matter because one thing that makes our community is the lack of certain people.

Anyway enjoy your Tera and Vanguard, its good to know some people still support and play soe games someone has to keep keep incredibly bad f2p on the market and keep those certain types of people out of the good communities.

Yes, actually you did! Your examples did not inspire me though. How ever most gave examples of how logical and well laid out the game was. Yea poor Sony, they are going broke, maybe we should take a collection LOL. I guess you must be a big fan of WOW since they are not made by Sony and charge a monthly fee. OH wait, AC and AC2 charge a fee those games must be the Bomb! Sorry your logic is not quite as good as FF's logical well laid out game.

Listen, stop complaining about how FF14 is like world of warcraft, this is what the players bascally asked for so this is what we got. Imo its better than most wow clones at least due to the class system and such, and the fact it has an actual story unlike most mmorpgs. At first I though the game was bleh, but then I look at the time and its 9 hours later.

Just remember the key point: This is what us the players bascally asked for, and they delivered, and honestly its not that bad. Its at least more intersting than most wow-clones. Also this is coming from me who has pretty much slammed the game for being a wow clone, after playing it for a bit, its not all that bad, it'll pass the time till Wildstar anyway.

In reality, pretty much every mmorpg is going to be as generic as wow for the most part, each time devs have deviated from the formula and its a sub based mmorpg its never done well enough to stay a sub based mmo. Its also what teh casuals want sadly and casuals make up much more of the market share than older more hardcore mmorpg players like myself. I've bascally made myself come to terms with it, maybe you should try to do this as well, you may enjoy the games more that way.

You said it perfectly "bleh", I would say bland. people are sucked in by the graphics and how logically everything is laid out

Thank everyone for discussing  why FF, and not Vanguard or Tera or SWTOR. I do find it interesting though that most people when they talked about FF talked about how well it was laid out, how logically managed it was, how one thing led to another etc. yep just like A major corporation, laid out in a perfectly logical manner but without a soul. or Tera or even Tor. I can only think it is because people are graphic worshipers or have some type of idealized thought about FF. Of course when we play these games it is only natural to compare them to others we have played.

I am not saying that ff is a terrible game just bland, ie mediocre. Yes the graphics are much better than the years old Vanguard but the crafting, combat, freedom (zones) diplomacy (one of a kind) exploration value, do not come close to Vanguard. Even Tera-both games have generic quests and both have great graphics but the combat is light years ahead in Tera. Even Tor with its average mmo mechanics has a much better quest system and cut scenes.

I guess what I am asking is How could this game be more popular than Vanguard-beats me? I am guessing it is because we are living in the "Latest and Greatest" generation I do understand the latest, but where is the Greatest?

TOR is a great game for casual players , every time i go on I see many people playing whether pvp or pve. About once every 2 or 3 weeks some disgruntled swg oldie will come on and do a negative post. Shame really,

Actually I post (negatively) nearly every time I see a thread, but I don't really need to. The game does far more damage to itself than any negative SWG vet could. For anyone reading this who hasn't played it, go check out SWTOR, but have a backup plan for something to do when you abruptly uninstall that sapping piece of bore-candy.

Like I said, Shame really, you are saying that you cannot find something good in any mmo?  Of course TOR needs improvements especially in the space game, but the story, animation and sound is fun for many of us. There are games I cannot get myself to play to often that I find dreadfully dull like WOW, rift, aion, eq2, but even these games had a few things in them that were kind of fun, just not enough
