It's February already?

Edit: It was actually Smed that said "second half of January" in a tweet about Landmark alpha a while back.  The official dates previously were Alpha Feb 28th and Beta March 30th (?).

Trust me, I'm as anxious as anyone for alpha

Smed also said end of year last year at the reveal that they would  release a playable version before years end.  Smed doesn't know what he is talking about becuase Smed is not a developer.  Sometimes he gets excited and says things maybe before he actually asks if they can be accomplished.

Dave Georgeson though scares the fook out of me all together.  He RUINED one of the best games in history Tribes, when he tried to release tribes 2 "the way he thought it would be fun", and it wasn't.  It sucked, bad.  I am afraid he is going to do that with this game, so I hope he takes his new age pony tail and early prototype hipster outfit and fucks off into the sunset after he ruins this one.  I am sure he is a nice guy, but he hasn't given me much hope with his history being a producer.

If they can bring back the SWG that we all loved, with modern graphics the expected modern MMO features, then I'll forgive them. They've impressed me with EQN-L and EQN.

I'll be following this announcement closely, but I've been burned way too many times in the past to hold my breath completely.

was just talking to my son about this.  The game as it was right when the lights went out (Since we enjoyed the end game a lot more then pre-cu but still played both), atmospheric flight, all the instances and crafting, I still like older creature handler more then the beast handler system, but I understand the change at least.  Put it in the voxel based engine that EQN / EQNL are using and keep all the city building just allow destruction.  Add a Z axis, and I will literally fly back to San Diego, drive to Sorrento Valley and deliver them each a 6 pack of their choice for the team.

but since they can't/won't, ill settle for eqn for now until we see where this new mmo ip is going the ama brought up.

They wouldn't have just gone changing things around if people hadn't started quitting before CU1.  I think people forget that.  They were trying to save an already sinking ship.  It wasn't like the game was bustling with people before CU1 hit, it was dying, slowly.  There was less and less PVP to be had, and my son the roleplayer said he had less and less roleplay.

The only problem I have with SWG was the fact they announced it.  Had 2 weeks of a wanna be beta where tons of players were screaming it wasn't ready, and they ignored it and launched it right after putting out an expansion that everyone just bought.  It was on purpose so they could grab as much as they could before the ship finally sailed.

I actually played SWG MORE toward the end of the lifespan then Pre CU, after they added so much stuff to do, like dungeons, actual working pvp ranks, Bunkers, etc, I was having way more fun playing a medic then I did playing a combat medic.  Jedi being frequent didn't bother me.  I play the game to have fun, not to worry about if others are playing Jedi or if it breaks the exact timeline.   If they had just left the game alone until it was at the state it was at a year or two before they shut it down and then showed it to the public I feel like the reception would have been 100% different, even with the removal of one of my favorite class systems...  btw anyone else remember the balancing nightmare that class system was?  Rose colored glasses sometimes I think get the better of us.

Nope.  I can say I am officially over the EA brand.

Lets see what the big gamefix and Mantle update later this month does before writing off BF4. It looks like EA came down hard on DICE for BF4's problems.

it won't matter to me anymore.  Its the fact they release products when they know they are ready then pay off people to advertise like its finished.  I don't care if they release the best polished turd ever, at this point Ive learned my lesson enough times.  They KNOW they have to have large scale, long period beta's to get stuff like this out to market in decent shape but they refuse because they are more worried they will get bad press.

well its backfired enough and they haven't learned their lesson that I don't think they are going to learn it anytime soon.  Every single patch since release for BF4 alone, and for the good part of 3 months after BF3 launch all made things way worse.  I don't see it changing now even with direct hardware access via mantle.

Well I am not going to slip you some sob story, I don't want any key.  I am looking for that SPECIAL key.

What I am hoping for:

If you have an extra key, and want someone who plays games as many hours a day as you do then pass it on my way.  If you have an extra key and you just want to hand it out and never talk to that person, give it to someone else.  I will just get bored and quit in a day anyway.  I am looking for that mmo partner in crime, if you are part of a trio/small guild who takes on all the same content as everyone else but does it with less numbers even better.

I like pvp'ing, raiding, but I don't mind just grinding quests or mats with a buddy either.  I just don't want to experience the game alone, and I don't take many breaks.  I am 37 and have two kids in school but they are gamers also.  So again, if you have a key and are yearning for a partner to play with I'm your dude.  If not, pass it on to someone else in the thread =)

I thought it was really funny when Brad McQuaid came on the forums before the Vanguard Release and was pretty much making drunken posts.

The faults of Vanguard were simple. Brad McQuaid lacked the managerial skills necessary in creating a well-developed MMO. Entire game was scrapped and redeveloped in two years. When it came time to reduce the company, they took an approach similar to other San Diego MMO development companies. Kept all the friends, dropped everyone else. Even if the friends category lacked the actual talent.

good thing you have no clue what the fuck you are talking about.

Source?  10 year career at SCE.  People ask why I never post here, because its a fucking cess pool of misinformation and people like this fella here... have no clue what he is talking about, never worked for or designed a game in his life but all the sudden knows everything that goes into it.

Just curious, how many games have you produced?

this.

I would wager a bet that some of you just need to be upset about "something" and this is your "something" for this month.

wanna list this 2k gaming card because I can sli a couple Titan's for 2k

If your talking video cards for CAD systems, 2k is pretty cheap.

As far as gaming goes it really depends what your into. Yes you get a pretty big bang for the buck when it comes to a console system, but they get you when it comes to the price of the games.

selection of games means nothing when 90% of the selection is crap to begin with.

Yep sli is what i meant.  I dont play on console so I wouldnt know about what games they have to be honest.

well i donno why u would sli especialy 2 titans, there is no game out there that will ever run sli to the max EVER. and if were talking mmo's such as diablo sli isnt even compatible with the mmorpg genre.... also i have a decent pc and by decent i mean its not a 700$ piece of shit which even so will run diablo 10 times better then mine cause all my parts are OVERKILL for diablo 3. the reason diablo stutters/skipps/laggs is because blizzard hasnt optimized it for current hardware cause they fail at doing so. i had to downgrade my spec from softwares and especialy from the cores used off of my cpu, my gpu runs from 1100 mhz at 700 now just so i stop getting stutters, and this is all on max grahpics.

u can shuv ur titans up ur butt cause they aint gonna do shit for any future mmo coming within the next 10 years. and thats a fact.

edit: also u say a 660 ti will be outdated in a year? huh?u must be smoking some bad shit son cause hardware wise yes its already outdated... performance wise for current games out and in production it will still play anything on high or even ultra... depending on the game of course... my wife has a 550 ti and she is running all her games at ultra with 60 fps flat. gg?

You should have stayed out of the conversation because you are about as ignorant as the guy you are talking smack too.  Sli doesn't work in the MMO genre?  /laugh.  SLi doesn't rely on genre wide classifications it only cares if your game has a built in sli profile or not, even if it doesn't you can use Nvidia bits to change it to one that will work well enough until they do put one out for that specific game.

Second, Sli titan's aren't for "gaming" on a single display.  They are built for using 3 monitors in sync.  It's why they have such a large memory configuration.

Third I find it even more hilarious you keep referring to your wife's 550ti being able to run all her games at ultra, then decide to not list what her cpu is, how much RAM she has in her system, or what "games" she plays.

The technology for the voxel destruction is shown to work tech demo or not, which goes beyond being just an idea. The implementation is a design decision just like the movement aspects and final graphics/graphical options for that matter lol.

It's all still too much in the air but more has been shown to work than graphics and movement which was my point. If we want to compare the tech demo to what may be in EQN I'd say nothing is exactly final.

I am guessing you already know this but you just want to feed the trolls, so I'll bite as a non troll responding to you with real world development experience in the industry.  What you got to see was not "working" how you are trying to make it sound.  What we saw was a SMALL zone, with CONTROLLED VARIABLES, and no AI.

What changes is when you add all the NPC's in with their AI, players, all the data and everything else that goes with making a large scale mmo.  Once that happens, that's when you really see what works and what doesn't.  That is why most idea's get scrapped after announcing them.  So while the guy you are responding to is obviously a hater of the game, you are not being exactly honest either.

OP asks "Has what we've seen so far lived up to the Ten Ton Hammer and Massively pre-reveal hype?"

No.  As a hardcore fan up and until the reveal, not in my opinion.  If this had been 5-6 years ago when marketing speak and big ideas before actually having them working wasn't overdone and abused to hell and back in this genre, maybe.  I know the fanboys and girls, and the trolls are going to eat this up as a "hater" post but honestly you have no idea what you are talking about as I am not a hater, I actually want EQN to succeed but I have history to show me that promises never get delivered on launch the way they are promised in marketing hype.

So until I actually see REAL gameplay with REAL AI improvements, until I have it in my hands and no, I don't mean landmark, I refuse to get hyped up because the things they are saying now all sound like rehashed marketing idea's from other games that never panned out how the original group planned it.  Do I have faith that it can be done?  Sure.  Do I think the penny penchers will allow the real genre changing ideas to go on, or new fresh ideas that haven't been tested?  No.

It's the nature of business.  Profits stifle innovation in gaming because the lowest common denominator then becomes how can we get the lowest budget possible with the highest return in profits.  Not, how can we change this genre and blow minds.  It sucks, but I've seen it happen in multiple studios I worked at which is eventually why I left the industry.

Let me start by saying that I do pvp, when it is organized or structured. In numerous games I have logged in and pvp'd til I logged off. Structured pvp, at least for me, can be fun and your working towards and a common goal that could result in unique gear, buffs for you faction, titles and achievements. What is perplexing is the need for open ffa pvp. I mean what's the point?

I play games to escape reality, immerse myself in a fantasy world where RL problems can be forgotten, if even just for a moment. Why does the pvp crowd insist on having OWPVP in games. As far as I have seen what is the reward? In structured pvp at least your working towards the titles, gear, achievements whatever whereas in OWPVP what is the ultimate goal? As I have seen there isn't any ultimate goal... unless you count the ability to grief other players a goal.

In all the games I have ever played I have VERY RARELY seen OWPVP be beneficial. Its always some high level player exacting punishment on a low level player or under skilled player. Its seems to me that OWPVP is just a measuring stick for epeens.

Why cant we have a ffa OWPVP server and a structured pvp PVE server, like most games do it? This way you hardcore pvp'rs can gank each other til your heats content while never forcing your gameplay on us who care not to OWPVP. Please tell me what you proponents of OWPVP really need with ffa PVP on every server? Cant you guys just get on your own server and duke it out? I am asking because I really do not see why you feel the need to include us players who prefer spvp and pve content in your gameplay style. help me understand. Take care and Happy Hunting.

all problems listed here have nothing to do with pvp being a bad decision, but bad design decisions leading to bad pvp environments.  PVP isn't the problem, Devs who don't want to embrace it, make a worthwhile OWPVP system with checks and balances is the real issue, not the players.

I couldn't sign up.  So I believe this beta is for current paying customers only.  Anyone else with a "free" account able to sign up?  It's been too long since I created my AO info I had to use my AoC/TSW account.

And now we have FFXIV A realm reborn.

Why do we have to choose between having good gameplay with unimaginative graphic and crappy game with aesthetically pleasing graphic?

Oh really?  FF XiV has complete destruction in its world?  WoW I never knew!

ARR runs on anything now pretty much, I have an old computer sitting around that is almost 6 or more years old and it runs it on standard graphics with 30FPS.

It's graphic style and art direction are far more appealing TO ME, than EQ's.

Which I think is what Jason1989 was trying to say.

I like a lot of the concepts EQnext is presenting, some of them sound iffy and I hope they are done right, but honestly the art style and direction are unappealing to me, and from the looks of it, I'm not alone.

So couldn't they have gone another way with it and maybe still had it run on anything and have all the options this game presents?

I think that is probably possible.

the point being is you can't compare the two engines because they aren't the same engine, they aren't even close because the options available in one isn't even close to the options available in the other.

But we were talking about the art style and the aesthetic of the game, not the engine.

anyway i understand the reason why they chose the cartoonish style but i think it is short sighted and being unimaginative at all.

not if you are talking about how well it runs on machines.  You need to either focus your argument/debate on one subject or learn what each subject means.  Engine will be what determines system resources, not the art style.

I'm sure they could have gone with a different art style or direction.

It's about scalability.

FFXIV ARR look's pretty meh on it's lowest settings.

It looks really nice on its ultra settings.

I'm sure that you can compare the two GRAPHIC styles, and the two choices of ART DIRECTION.  No one is comparing the graphics engines.

Why can't this game have scalability and art direction / art style that is more realistic and less pixar.

I'm sure it could.

Graphics doesn't equal ENGINE.   You are so sure, how many years have you spent developing engines for gameplay on large scale platforms?  Art style does however matter when dealing with poly counts.. and FF XiV isn't photorealistic, its just as cartoony have you even played it?

I was looking for a more mature game like the original EQ was. This console style game design needs to be rethought imho. They should have put time into building Vanguard from the ground up, instead of ruining the EQ franchise with Disney art style and Wildstar gameplay. I will reform my opinion as more details come out, but this just is the same old thing as it stands.

wildstar gameplay?  Seriously?  LOL.

Agreed!, as for OP if you won't play a game even if its the game changing game of the genre because of the graphics style, /wave!  See ya later =)
