I picked this up a few days ago due to some of the posters who have been around this place for years, and whose opinions I actually respect, were giving it some praise.  To let you in a little on my mindset with MMOs in general, I've been playing SWG for the last few months as I don't believe there is much more out there worth my time.  Got into the ESO beta and determined it was the same old stuff in a different wrapper.  Prior to that Darkfall was my game of choice, plenty of issues but decent for what it is.  Have a key for EQ Landmark and can't get past those stylized graphics so it remains unused (no you can't have it)

Having said that, AA is a lot of the same old stuff in a different wrapper.  Tab target, big question marks over quest givers heads, go kill "X" of "Y" and bring me their "Z".  The difference is they combined the likable things from a lot of MMOs over the years, added a few new  ideas and made it their own.  It doesn't feel as linear as most MMOs out there in many areas of gameplay I experienced (not many areas to be honest).

The class system is nice as you can actually combine three of ten classes to make your character your own.  Each class has abilities that you can select or not to make it how you want it.  It feels like you have a lot of choice which direction you want to take your character.

I set up a small farm and determined it was a whole new can of worms.  The number of things you can grow or raise is truly impressive.  The mechanics are also impressive as it seems you actually have to water plants, feed live stock and care for your farm a bit.  The crafting also seem pretty robust compared to other systems due to number of skills and the variety of thing you can craft.  Again, feels like another can of worms I have not really opened yet.

I guess there seems like so many different things you can do in the game.  On the whole I have no idea what I'm doing and that's a good thing.  Most MMOs I have played copy the WoW formula in every respect and you know what to do prior to playing the game.  AA deviates from that in many areas.  Combine that with realistic type graphics, an open world, ships, flying and PvP and it's a pretty nice package thus far.

As always time will tell.  On the $150 entrance fee, it is my understanding that half of it you get back in store credit.  Don't know what the store sells but it lessened the pain of the initial cost in my mind.  Add that to a 3 month sub included and I could justify the cost.

I'm having a good time in AA and am certain I havn't really scratched the surface.  Looking forward to playing some when I get home.  I did just start so my opinion should really be taken lightly.

You came off a 150 bones to get into an alpha/beta game?

Old article from 2012....................

The article will be 2 years old in a few months.  It seems the author made an addendum to the article that points directly at the OP.  My off hand thought is that the OP has some sort of agenda related to Massively or the author her self.  The addendum can be seen at the bottom of the article and is as follows.

February 2014 addendum

Since fanboys keep necrospamming links to and fisking this article in some weird and incompetent attempt to show that it proves I have some deep bias against the Elder Scrolls franchise and therefore am intentionally tanking ESO on Massively because of some petty vendetta they imagine I have, I wanted to clarify for anyone with the intellect to actually read an article instead of just believing what the tinfoil hat crowd posts to Reddit. (Actually, I can’t even pick on Reddit because the first person to post this on Reddit was called a fool and downvoted. Score one for Reddit, what the heck.)

First, this blog post is almost two years old. Some of what it contains is outdated information. Gameinformer is actually Gamestop’s pet website, which actually makes sense in retrospect since Bethesda obviously has business dealings with a large console distributor like Gamestop. I didn’t know that at the time (and if I had, I would have mentioned it because it supports my hypothesis that ESO is first and foremost a console game for consolers, not an MMORPG for MMORPGers). As the current EIC of Massively, I am also responsible for overseeing all of our ESO coverage, and that includes the creation and staffing of our weekly Tamriel Infinium column, written by ESO fan Larry Everett. And since E3 2012 (when the above entry was written), Massively has been the beneficiary of many hands-on opportunities with ESO, most positive, which anyone who’s been following our site for the last couple of years already knows. Here are some of the bigger ones: the one about butts, the one about cabbages, a different one from that same E3, one from a special event right before E3, and this one and this one from PAX East last year.

If had some vendetta, I certainly wouldn’t have published any of those articles or that column, or for that matter, any of the neutral and positive articles from the last hands-on that accompanied our general preview by Eliot Lefebvre. I didn’t make Eliot write a negative preview any more than I make Larry write a positive column every single week. Our writers formulate their own opinions, and if I wanted to trash the game, I would have written something myself.

Second, this blog is completely public. “Exposing” it is no big feat since I have it linked prominently on my Massively profile, Twitter account, Steam account, etc. It is not a secret. This specific post was also referenced heavily in a much better article by my colleague on Massively itself. I have discussed the topic of ESO’s marketing campaign ad nauseam in dozens upon dozens of podcasts over the last few years as well as in several other articles on Massively since the business model announcement. My opinion of Bethesda’s marketing and its business model remains largely unchanged: I fully expect it to sell in the 3-4 million range by the time it hits consoles, and I fully expect it to lose subscriptions and go free-to-play, having learned nothing from SWTOR. I don’t believe Bethesda is really in tune with the MMO industry in terms of its marketing or gameplay. There is sadly nothing at all revolutionary in saying so, not when this blog came out or now. It is an opinion now shared broadly across the MMO industry.

Perhaps instead of fisking this ancient article, you ought to have read my more recent post on the TES franchise, the one encouraging people to play Morrowind in prep for the ESO launch and offering extensive mod advice to newbies. I wrote that because I am a hardcore Elder Scrolls franchise fanatic who’s been playing since Daggerfall. I have installs of Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim on my machines, and I have logged time in all three in the last month because I still love them. If anyone wants ESO to succeed, it’s me, because my job depends on this industry flourishing and because I don’t want ESO’s failure to herald the end of the franchise, but wanting something doesn’t make it so, and my job requires me to look past what I want to happen to chronicle what likely will and what does.

I realize this doesn’t suit the preconceptions of those folks who keep spamming me, who know so little about me and have such elite reasoning skills that they’re calling me a “faggot,” and who want to believe that anyone who says or publishes anything bad about a game must possess some nefarious hidden agenda. I don’t care. Just stop spamming your idiotic frothing fanboy posts.

Strange sequence of events going on here.  I don't regular Massively but there is more to this than we are aware of.

..... meh.

Op i will cut it short, there is NO game !.

it is nothing but promises and taking people's money for a product that is not yet fit for sale.Of course by going the new wave era of so called FREE to play, they can escape any legal issues about purposely trying to sell an unfit product, instead they call it donations of buying into the development process [this one is a big lol]your NEVER part of the dev process weather you think you are or not.

Now in saying this game COULD turn out great, who i am to say, after all i just finished saying there is no game yet to judge anything by.However as is right this moment there is nothing to go on that is worthy of a sale of any kind.THAT is why this type of new age profiting off of naive gamer's is very corrupt far i am concerned.Ya i know they are grown adults they can look after their own money, well same thing happened years ago when for example Canada did not want casinos. It is because many people do not use good judgement ,those are the type of people that get taken advantage of ,that is why there is consumer laws against businesses trying to sell people unfit products, well keyword "Knowingly" sell unfit products.

Thing about opinions and discussions is yes i listen to yours you listen to mine but i know the end result, you hand over money based on promises and what you perceive to be a future product.

A man and his mission.  To spread as much Kick Starter hate as possible.  Bah ...... some of your points however are quite correct about SC and in general.  Aside from a First/Third Person run around in your hanger, hop in your ship that doesn't fly, shoot some lame targets and watch your fish swim ...... there is no Star Citizen game to play.

I'm curious though, if and when one of these KS games, that was built on the backs of idiots, becomes the greatest thing since sliced bread would you purchase it then?  Will you thank the idiots for financing the change that is so desperately needed in the industry?  Or will you think to yourself "Hell No, that's one of those idiot Kick Starter games, I refuse to play."

On a side note .... don't forget to help support these greedy tools.  Another indi studio out to rip everyone off.  Only a couple days left throw your money away on it.

Seeing how open and interactive the development of Everquest Next landmark works... it is indeed sad to compare this to ESO. It really feels like the same old Dev crap all over again.

Not talking about the game itself here, but the stance they show. "We know everything better then the player. They don't know what they want, but we do!"... what a crap.

Lift that NDA and let us talk!

Why do people compare this with EQ:NL? Do they not understand that the only reason the NDA was lifted for EQ:NL is because they sold the Alpha access? Is it hard to comprehend it? Every game which has provided access to paid Alphas/Betas have lifted their NDAs. EQ:NL did nothing special. And before the Alpha, do tell me what open talks did you see from the developer? I would like to know this as i can't recall anything except for some videos which both sides have done so far.

They make the comparison to EQ:NL because SOE took the high route it seems.

I cannot stand SOE.

I really dislike Smedley.

I will never play that simple cartoon game.

But even I can admit when things are being handled impressively.  Which is exactly how SOE is handling EQ:NL:  NDA lifted, perhaps impulsively, but lifted none the less.  Combined with a no questions money back guarantee ....... damn.

Thats how you do it .....

They lifted the NDA on EQNL, which is a minecraft type game.

The NDA for the MMO version of EQN is still in place.

Right you are ....... you don't think they will act the same way with EQN as they did with EQ:NL?

The whole point of the beta tests are for players to give them feedback to fix things or to stress test, they aren't for you to try the game or chat about it.  They aren't demos, the fact the NDA is still there tells you that.

Very few games that you can buy allow you to play it without buying it before launch, if you want to talk about it wait until it launches.

I would easily agree if they hadn't lifted it for the press.  There are numerous videos and preview opinions floating around the webs and they cannot be discussed.

Perhaps this is all just poorly timed ....... I don't know, it seems silly.

No. Not that I have seen.

I didnt think so, seeing as its a ES game, one more question if you dont mind?

Can you move the compus from the top of your screen to another location?

I never was a fan of having parts of UI blocking the top part of my screen other then maybe the enemies health bar/

Not by default. Maybe mods?

To add, ESO probably has the most minimalist UI in an MMO I've ever seen. I don't think things being 'blocked' will be an issue.

Hmmmm...I see you have decided to man the guns this evening Mike.

My understanding it the UI is written in LUA which is an open scripting language.  Mods for the UI are going to be numerous once the modders get to work.

I now understand why there is an NDA.

No you dont. What is good must pass the fire of public critique. This isnt a year or two before release, this is 2 frigging months.

Yeah, I do. Installed the beta this time around.

Lol, I see. ^^;

I still think it can be helped. But they NEED to face some reality. God, I hate it when developers are that stubborn like "we know it all best". I have seen that SO MANY TIMES. *cough* SWTOR *cough*

I would be more inclined to think the developers have little to do with this.  It is all publisher/investor driven.

Agreed ..... it is time for the NDA to go away.

Alrighty then ..... I did learn that that thing was called an Ouroborus though.

Soooo ..... I thank you for that.

For the google impaired .... Someone over at reddit put together a list of previews

Not sure what to think at this point .... especially with the NDA still up.

[mod edit- previews :)]

High quality isn't necessary ..... being Elder Scrolls should however ensure it won't have BS Winnie the Poo stylized cartoon graphics though.

Smedley, Smedley, Smedley .......

/shakes head

It seems looking deeper into the screen shot he posted on twitter was a pretty accurate account of the situation.

I know ....... It would have ruined my sarcastic drama post though.

I am inclined to think you aren't looking deep enough into Smedleys photo.  Lets not forget ol' Smed is a pretty smart guy.   Notice the cork board behind the monitor.

So now what do you think it means ..........

So they said that what they did was definitely not shady, good enough for me.  Cause any time a company does something questionable they self police themselves and admit that they may have overstepped a bit.

Exactly what I was thinking .....

This just in:  All non CE copies of the game will come with a small packet of vaseline as you will never be able play the Imperial Race.  Perhaps never is too strong a word.  Once ESO goes F2P you will be able to pick up the Imperial Race for a nominal fee.

Additionally, check out our new Kick Starter Campaign to release the NDA.  Goal is $100K and we're accepting pledges as small as $1.  Bonuses for larger donations include ...... The Imperial Playable Race and Cool Horse Mounts.

Good time to be a gamer

You know I am actually a believer in Kick starters, especially those associated with gaming.  I always saw it as an indi game companys opportunity to skip the whole publisher BS game.  Lets face it, a lot of the time the publishers are the problems with these new releases.  "It's taking too long!", "It needs to play more like WoW!",  "No, No ...... the majority of gamers like stylized graphics!" ,  "More cartoony more cartoony! .... etc ...... etc.  Publishers screw up games .... plain and simple.

It is why we have 100 carbon copies of  a few popular games.  Introduce a publisher and the game dream suddenly has to compete with the flavor of the month.  Once a publisher has entered the picture the developer has some one to answer to besides the gamer.  If you aren't aware of this give it some thought ...... we'll wait.  Let me help a bit (Publisher=Investor) ... words can be interchanged in most instances.

Back to kick starters .......... Woo Hoo, Fuq the publishers!  We don't need them ..... Woo Hoo.  You've gotta love it, we are starting to get some unique and varied games running around.  Granted, not a one of them is complete, but they're playable and they have people talking.  Now if you were a publisher, what would you do about this?  Kick Starter is cutting them out of the profit.  Not trimming them back, completely cutting them out of everything.  Granted they still have their own studios generally ... but, pffft.  If I we're a publisher I'd be concerned.  I would rethink some things and act accordingly.  I would get some stooge to act as if he were an indi game company CEO and push him a bit to make a kick starter game.  All the while knowing if the kick starter succeeded gamers would be paying to make a game that I would eventually buy out cheaply and call my own.  Genius ...... the long established publisher gets to make a Kick Starter game.

Now enter Brad McQuaid and Mr. SOE, John Smedley.  For those of you that aren't aware, they are buds and have been for some time now.  SOE bought Sigil to pull Vanguard from the flames, bought all assets and gave Brad the limited role of "Creative Consultant", for obvious reasons.  HERE is some more info on where Brad has been for the last few years ..... working at SOE. (From Wikipedia).

May 15, 2007, Sony Online Entertainment officially announced that it had purchased the key assets of Sigil Games Online.

On June 16, 2010, Brad updated his Blog to announce that he is the co-founder of a new gaming company in San Diego, CA. Some months later, the blog was removed from the website, leaving the website as just a single page website.

On July 6, 2012, Sony Online Entertainment announced the re-hiring of Brad to continue work on Vanguard including its Free-to-Play transition.

On March 6, 2013, Brad announced that he has returned to working on EverQuest.

On September 9, 2013, Brad announced to the world that he left SOE but is still working closely with them, and that Smedley is even excited about this. This news coupled with the string of hints dropped throughout Twitter and various board leads the community to believe that Brad is now working on a true spiritual successor to EverQuest and Vanguard.

On January 13, 2014 the game was announced as Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen alongside a Kickstarter campaign.

I'm sorry but SOE is making this Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen game.  Not some new start up company that needs money.  Look at the stretch goals for the kick starter ..... are you kidding me.  Brad MaQuaid as CEO?  Are you kidding me?  I am making this thread for one reason and one reason only.  So I can bring it back to life when SOE takes over this game to finish it.  Why do you think they are cleaning out MMOs like Vanguard, FreeRealms and Wizardry .... to make room is why.

Perhaps the proper response will be "So what"  This is what publishers do, they make their investors money any way they can.  I just can't help but feel it will be taking advantage of what I see "Kick Starter" as.  It is supposed to be an opportunity for an indi company to get their feet in the door of the big boys arena.  Not an opportunity for the big boys to make even more money and control the direction of a game.  History does tend to repeat itself .......VG

So I will leave this now and bring it up in a couple years after Pantheons fourth kick starter fails them and SOE supposedly buys them out and takes control.  Feel free to add to the thread as it will make the discussion in 2016 that much more interesting.

Sofar the core mechanics of the game have been about exploration, mining, terraforming plantets, keeping business's running by supplying resources. I'm not sure what else there is I haven't done alot of research on the game.. I just hope this is what I thought SWTOR was going to be.

Well so far the core mechanics are walking round a buggy room looking at a ship you bought and firing a gun at a target.

I would think it will be 6-12 months before we can say what ends up in the game.

Fish tank ....... you forgot the fish tank mechanic.

What about the Voxel engines I see more and more of, are there any benefits related to those as far as viewing distance goes?  I have a basic understanding of a typical 3D engine, voxels not so much.  Actually I'm clueless as to how it works and differs from a more standard polygon engine.

A few years ago I remember this company called "Euclideon" came out with a video of their "Unlimited Detail" engine that was going to change everything.  As I recall Notch from Minecraft claimed it was voxel tech, the Euclideon guys said otherwise.

Looked into them again and it seems they have steered away from games and more into the Geospatial Industry.  Very cool stuff but problematic when it comes to collision detection I imagine.
