Indeed ...... the whole gaming situation seems to be one of those feast or famine things.

I hope TSW is one of those games that moves the MMO genera forward.  Anymore, the games seem to be one step forward and two steps back.

Come and see how Diablo 3 should have been .....  ; )

Path of Exile Public Stress Test Weekend

If nothing else a well done ARPG to get you in the mood for the Diablo 3 release on the 15th.

Guild Wars 2 is ..........

Very much like every other MMO I have played.  If you have been playing MMOs for any amount of time, you know exactly what I am talking about.  Nothing revolutionary, nothing evolutionary ...... the same ol' stuff in a different wrapper.

That being said, it's a decent game. I had no problems other than lag, based on prior experiences, seemed like that of an overloaded server.  Did not make it unplayable by any means and I'm fairly certain it was associated with server testing. (For myself, at least)

Things I liked .......

~Always in the back of my head is .... "There is no sub fee ...."  ( Perhaps I'm just a cheap ass, but that alone weighs heavy )

~Graphics are acceptable (A little cartoony for characters, but, I can live with it)

~It didn't seem like easy mode ( I died a lot ...... I only played squishy casters so that might have had something to do with it, or maybe I just suck.  Regardless, I liked that. )

~Did I mention there is no sub fee .......

Things I didn't like .........

~I couldn't scroll the view into first person mode with the mouse wheel.  There could be a key to do this, I just never felt like tracking it down.

~I hated my turning radius/speed.  This was actually pretty damn annoying.  I couldn't run up several flights of stairs without stopping, to turn.  The turning speed wasn't proportional to the run speed.  (Strange...... )

~It felt like every other MMO I've played in recent years.

Like I said ..... It's a decent game.  Just don't jump on the hype train prior to playing and you'll enjoy your time a lot more.

I'm just curious, which mmos plays like gw2 you keep talking about? Give examples in game mechanics. Thanks. I would very much try them if they have the same mechanics.

I carefully crafted this list of games that I feel are pretty similar to Guild Wars 2 in response to your question.

~LINK~

In all seriousness however, the mechanics remain the same.  Tab ..... 1 ........2 ......3 .......1 ......Tab .......1 ......2 ........3 .........1 .......Tab..... etc....

I know the arguments "Your playing it wrong!",  "No, you switch weapons and get new skills!", "You have to move around!", "You wern't dodging!" ........  To be fair I only played a few hours each day and only played casters.  Maybe melee/ranged weapons classes are something new and exciting.  I also didn't delve into the PvP game.

Regardless, it's seemed the same ol' shit.  The argument may be that of semantics.  Certainly of the same caliber.  Nothing worthy of the words "Revolutionary" or "Evolutionary."  Not even close.....

A person that plays WoW, Rift, SWTOR, Aion, GW, EQ2, AoC ... etc, etc, would be able to be dropped into Guild Wars 2 blind and play the game just fine.  Perhaps for many thats a good thing.  For myself however it is not.  I feel  they are worn out and tired mechanics from 56k days that should be replaced with something truely "Revolutionary" or "Evolutionary."

Like I said ..... it's a decent game based on my experience.  I am content with my pre-purchase and will play Guild Wars 2, I'm certain of that.  It has differences just like every MMO has, but, the overall feel is the same ol' thing.  The new and shiny won't last long ..... but hey, there's no sub fee.

You don't really understand how reviewers work at the most basic level do you?

I draw my opinions from reviews, others opinions, previous games, simliar games and beta time.

Factoring all of those in the game does not live up to what it should be imo.

Thats all i wanted to hear, its ok if you dont like the game but dont go arround saying its bad because it isnt.

I'm thinking this up coming week the interwebz will be filled with impressions/reviews/opinions and it's not going to be pretty.

Meh ..... quite simply, it is what it is.  Not quite what I was expecting but  I'm thankful I was able to play prior to making a purchase.

Signed up, downloaded it, played it for a bit .......

The realization soon hit me that this wasn't Diablo 3.  It was Diablo 2 and WoW mashed together into a new game trying to be something called Diablo 3.  It, for what ever reason, feels really Wow-y .....

If you want to play Diablo 3 check out "Path of Exile."  Simply put, it is the sucessor to Diable 2 ..... in my opinion of course.

Yeah, would finite resource ever work in an MMO?

I don't think it is valid to ask if it *would* work, because it already has....

  • Every resource in SWG was randomly generated off of master types. We defined “iron,” and gave it statistical ranges. Different kinds of iron would spawn with different names, but they would all work as iron in any recipe that called for such. This meant that you might find a high-quality vein of iron, or a low quality one.
  • Even more, it might be high quality only for specific purposes.
  • Resource types were finite. You could literally mine out all the high quality iron there was. It would just be gone. A new iron might be spawned eventually (sometimes, very eventually!) but of course, it would be rolled up with different characteristics.
  • And in a different place. Resources were placed using freshly generated Perlin noise maps.
  • Crafters gambled with their resources, generating items of varying quality that were partially dependent on the resources and the recipe.
  • Crafters could lock in specific results as blueprints, but that forced a dependency on the specific finite resource that was used, meaning that blueprints naturally obsolesced.

All of this meant that a merchant could never rely having the best item, or the most desirable item (indeed, “most desirable” could exist on several axes, meaning that there were varying customer preferences in terms of what they liked in a blaster). Word spread through informal means as to the locations of rare ore deposits. People fought PvP battles over them. People hoarded minerals just to sell them on the market once they had become rare. And of course, they organized sites like the now defunct SWGCraft.com, which monitored all of this fluctuating data and fed it back out in tidy feeds for other sites and even apps to consume, such as this one, which was widely used by hardcore business players much like a Bloomberg terminal is by someone who plays the market.

~ From Raph Koster's most recent blog post about SWG's economy: "Do auction houses suck?"

Agreed ...... the system used by SWG was truly a thing of beauty.  Resource gathering and crafting both ...

I have yet to find something even close to the complexity and still have a decent fighting side to the game.  For years I lived in the game by moving/buying/selling resources.  Many alts each with 10 spots for extractors and just relocate when the resource was out.  Sigh, the good ol' days.

That was fast ......

On another note "Toms Hardware" put up their rundown of the card.

Similar situation a week ago for myself.  Continued to get worse with strange things going on .... artifacting in movies at full screen, strange freezes ..... etc.  Computer reached a point where one of my monitors was un-usable, windows wouldn't see it.

Popped video card in another computer and it worked fine.  Ultimately did a low level format on a spare drive, re-installed windows 7 x64 and havn't looked back.  Everything seems to be working fine now.

That's immediate expulsion from the community .......

Really?

One among many peculiar acts for a country.  This however raised my eyebrow this morning ....

Western developers should feel embarrassed by the level of detail and effort that is going into this game.  Seems to be the first of the so-called "Sand Park" or "Theme Box" games.  Hopefully it will take off and some western developers will finally open their eyes.

No, you should return them.  I was watching eBay the week before release and sure they were selling in upwards of $400, but that was more or less for late comers crowd of, "OMG I forgot to pre-order and I want in the early access, I'll pay anything..."

Then about a day or two before launch they dropped under $200 and most now are barely selling for $175.  And if one were to look around, you can still get them for $150.   Or find a copy that was returned or never picked up, like the two you bought...

So yeah, just return them if you don't plan to use the codes as they're not worth anything anymore...

I have been watching the prices as well.  It seems you can readily get them on Amazon as well as Ebay.  The potential is in the long term as SPOTTYGECKO suggested.

It depends on how many other people do the same thing, essentially. If there's a large amount of CE's on offer on ebay, the price will not rise much. It's also the most expensive CE in MMO history afaik, so it's already starting from a high base price.

Another thing to consider is how many CE boxes were made. If there was only ever 1 production run, then the chances of scarcity will be much greater. However, if EA decide to make another 50K because the first run mostly sold out, then it rapidly drops the potential "investment value" of individual units.

The further you get from launch day, the lower the demand for CE's will become. The retail price of boxes usually start dropping 3-4 months after launch, because the hype wears off. That means the CE (at original price) represents less and less value compared to the standard box.

If SWTOR remains a solid success for the next 5 years, and EA don't keep on making CE boxes (even in relatively small amounts), then an original CE box in shrinkwrap will fetch a handsome price in 5 years' time.

Speculation is always a risky business :)

I am thinking the benefit of the collectors edition is the in game vendor only for collectors edition subscribers.  I have no idea what is in the vendor as I have not seen one.  I agree that historicaly the price keeps going down until they reach the F2P model.  It is a matter of whether SWTOR will remain popular enough to stay a subscriber game.

~Hairysun

When I signed up it was with my regular IP.  Now everytime I go through my VPN (which changes my IP address) they ask me a security question.

~Hairysun

So, I am at Best Buy yesterday picking up crap I ordered online.  The whole in store process was problematic so I was there for a while.  While I'm standing there I spot a few boxes of the collectors edition SWTOR behind the counter.  I ask the girl helping me if those are for sale.  She said as long as there isn't someones name on the box.  She checked and there was two of them without a name.  I impulsively bought them.

I already have a basic digital version of the game.  I have no need for the online gifts, in box stuff and access to the collectors edition vendor in game.  My question to the vast superior knoweledge base that is MMORPG.com is ......

Should I keep them in hopes of selling them for a profit down the road ?
